Dehydrated mashed potatoes belong on no one's menu ever, and lemon juice packets instead of a fresh wedged lemon? Wth? Is everything except breakfast pre-prepared packaged foods?) Rooms are private, TVs have endless options if you're into that, and the quality of rest, sleep and care are excellent. I sort of feel like I'm being pampered at a Four Seasons hotel. I'd like to thank the nurses and doctors at the Prebys Cardiovascular institute. Yesterday my father went in complaining of chest pain. He was having a heart attack and because the nurses and doctors acted so swiftly he would most likely not be here. They were able to stabilize his issues and operate in under 3 hours. I then spoke to my father who said he felt so much better and was so complimentary of the nurses and doctors. Thank you for all you do, I'm will forever be grateful. read more

Another one for the ICU. This time, a doctor who was supposed to be at least sympathetic about our situation. CARL FRICKS. My dad was unconscious but would still respond using the movement of his feet. It was a thursday when I last visited and there were still three medications used for my dad. My mom and brother came back the next day while I was on video call. We noticed that there was only one medication left. So, for a family member who does not have a broad knowledge of what any medical decisions. We've raised some questions to the nurse. All of the sudden, this doctor came in the room and UNPOLITELY talked to my family members. My brother then called me through video call so I can ask the questions since the doctor was present. He was very offensive saying that he wasnt aware that he had to ask permission from a family member before he does his job. I explained to him that it was not our intention and we were just curious why. He then said that if he did that and had to ask the family members before taking medicine out, he wouldnt have time to take care of patients that are more ill than my dad. He also said that theres nothing left to be done with my dad because he is unresponsive and basically just dying. In addition, he also said "Im doing doctor stuff here. Nobody is going behind any family's back" and i get it, I was not questioning his job but we just wanted to know of the change. Im also doing family member stuff here and i believe it is his responsibility to answer questions and provide information for my dads care. Multpile things have happened in this situation: First of all, I did not ask for his time to barge in and speak to me about my concerns. It was nice of the nurse to catch him and have him explain the situation. But he didnt have to make me feel that my dad is less important than the other patients because my dad is almost passing in a matter of days, then. Second, I believe we have the right to ask questions. I am also my dads authorized representative so I do have the right to do so. Third, my family is already grieving and for him to be sarcastic the way he was and having no sympathy explaining to the family. He added stress and anger instead of us just focusing our energy on spending time with my dad. Fourth, this was the same doctor who came in the room a couple days before that incident who first asked my brother when he came in "I assume you guys speak english right?" #racismcomment It was a simple question about the medication. My sister Hasmig walked into this Hospital and within hours was put on life support. The Doctors and Nurses here damaged her kidneys, ruptured her spleen (causing internal bleeding, almost killing her), overmedicated her to a vegetative state, making her a zombie; and, after one month transported and dumped her into Kindred Hospital, where she died of negligence originally created by Prebys medical staff. read more

I'm a long time caregiver to my Father who had a Left Ventricle Device implanted in 2013 when this was Scripps Memorial, I can't say enough good about this hospital and their staff. The new facility is even better (if possible) the only reason it is is because it's so new. The surgeon who implanted my Dad Dr. Baradarian, there isn't any better surgeon on the planet! His Cardeologist, Dr. James Heywood is one of the most caring and educated cardiologists I've ever had the pleasure to know. This man is not only good at what he does he's patient! I've put him through so many trials! I'm sure I'm referred to over there as "The Daughter" HA HA All in all, I feel so blessed to have this team on my Dad's side and when he leaves this world I will know that he's leaving many years later than he would have because of their skill. It's been two months since my mom had open heart surgery to replace her mitral valve at Prebys Cardiovascular Institute. I had no idea how great Scripps was until this unexpected surgery was going to happen. From the beginning everyone at Scripps were super friendly and extremely professional in taking care of my mom and our family. Surgery went without any hitches, and her level of care was top notch! The ICU nurses were all so great! I was particularly impressed with Dr. Brewster and his team which included his PA, Bruce. They were very transparent in my mom's care. I definitely had the sense that everyone knew what they were doing and paid attention to my mom's needs and also when she did not want to do what the respiratory therapist wanted her to do! My mom was a nurse for over 30 years and spent time as an ICU nurse. She was very very pleased and that says a lot! On another note, their facilities are great. They have a little coffee/food shop downstairs that does soups and sandwiches, along with other things you can buy when you are hungry and don't want to go anywhere. Parking can eat up your money, so make sure you pay for your parking ticket before you head down to leave (you can't pay from your car). Our family is very lucky to have my mom come here. She has SCAN, and it worked out perfectly. Thanks to Scripps, my mom's quality of life has improved significantly! read more

After a totally unexpected need for a Mitral Valve repair I was checked into the ER and then Prebys Cardiovascular Institute of Scripps. In the 11 days I was there preparing for surgery and post surgery my care was outstanding. Every member of the staff was caring, knowledgeable and attentive. At least for myself the staff almost always made me feel as if I was their only patient. I'm going to review parking and amenities separate from the hospital. Had to edit to add our Hospital experience; All the wonderful, caring staff, from the ER, OR and 5th floor medical staff was negated by the way the case managers (many excuses given, short staffed, a doctor blamed, etc) treated us with terrible communication. After a 16 day stay, my extremely frail 96 year old mother was transported via ambulance to a skilled nursing home. My sister and I had been there for 3 hours that same day and it was not mentioned to us once. We had been told continually over the 16 days that they had no idea when that would happen. Instead we left her sleeping peacefully and left hoping to avoid traffic. It's a quite a commute for us, not that they care. The next family shift was coming at 5:00 pm, as we like family to be with her. Less than 2 hours after we left mom sleeping, a different family member received a phone call that mom was in transport. Good thing as she (the family member) was about to head to the hospital in the opposite direction. My mom was transported in rush hour traffic from La Jolla to the facility in Kearney Mesa, with out any family involvement. Also without socks or slippers, when she is always freezing cold (and they knew that). Although we were told this new facility could handle her needs, that's not completely true. Nor were they completely forewarned. That's another story for another time. If only we had known (a little common courtesy and compassion) we would have acted differently. Our entire large family finds this absolutely shameful. Regarding parking; I had problems that stretched out for over a week with the payment machine that takes cash and cards for parking structure A. Located right outside the main doors of the hospital, by the elevators. I called and reported the problems twice. I was treated very politely (thank you for that) and it was obvious that the machine was worked on, however it was never completely fixed in the course of that 1 week. At that point it could only take exact cash. So it went at least 2 days completely broken, several days taking cards only and by my last day there card or exact change only. I can't believe I'm the only one this bothered as I wanted to pay cash, but apparently me calling twice was the only notice of a problem. The next complaint is that the only change it can give when it does work is 1 dollar coins. Yet you can't pay with them. So inconvenient. I was told the machine breakdown was probably because it was out of coin change. It's also a shame to me that unlike Sharp Hospital in Kearney Mesa, you can't get your parking validated when you come to visit a patient. I spent a lot of $ in the duration of my relatives stay. Also at Sharp unlike Scripps, they take good care of visitors, such as complimentary hot coffee etc in the lounge's on each floor. Yes, I have spent way to much time in hospitals lately. Great Neuroradiologist - Chris Neil! If this review were for him and his miracle blood clot removing procedure, it would be a 5-star review. The stuff that came after Dr Neil is prompting the low review. The nurses themselves all have great attitudes (thus 2 stars instead of 1) but I am very unimpressed with the level of care at this hospital overall. They have what appears to be a 3-ring circus act of doctors and therapy specialists that continually rotate and come and go. They leave orders that don't get followed by anybody and then nobody is accountable. When you ask why the therapies that were ordered never happened - the answer is "I don't know, I'll check into it" and then still nothing. When you ask why nobody has given the patient a shower in 6 days (even though one was ordered days ago) the answer is "hmmmm good question" To make matters worse, this rotation of doctors and specialists do physical "tests" that last 30 seconds and have a conversation that lasts another 30 (or usually they do them at the same time) and then write reports that jeopardize any chance of the patient getting the care they actually need because other care facilities and insurance companies believe a report by someone that didn't bother to do a thorough evaluation - especially over time since the symptoms are not consistent (kind of like your car making a horrible noise all the time except for the 3 minutes your mechanic is looking at it) We are pretty early into this, but I will definitely be looking into reporting negligence to higher boards and governing bodies if this turns into our family member not recovering to the degree he could have if they were really doing their jobs or writing reports that let other people do it. read more

This hospital is incredible. Gorgeous. Top notch. They have an excellent meeting center that is large and comfortable just as you walk in on the left. There is valet in front of Scripps next door. The place is clean and beautiful. The staff is helpful. The acute floor is where i have spent most of my time there. It is easy to get lost up there but there is always some nice nurse to help guide you to the room you want or back to the elevators. The rooms are large and private and it is kept pretty quiet up there. I can't say enough for this place, other than I am a big fan. read more

I recently underwent my second heart heart valve replacement surgery at Prebys because my original replacement had lasted as long as it should have. While the technology and environment at Prebys is state of the art, it is the compassion and the care of the employees that will always stand out for me. From the initial reception, to the nurses in the prep area, to the entire surgical team, the nurses in the Cardiovascular ICU, to the nurses and nurses assistants, the treatment was exceptional. Every effort was made at all times to make me as comfortable as possible. I was visited frequently by doctors and my surgeons assistants to check on how I was progressing and to answer any questions I might have. The nurses and their assistants could not have been kinder and more sensitive to my needs. My experience at Prebys will always be well-remembered. I would definitely qive them many more stars than is allowable. read more

The experts at Prebys Cardiovascular Institute performed an angiogram with stents and kept me overnight for observation. 7:30am check-in, the procedure at 9am and up to my room on the 7th floor by 11:30am. Each person on staff that cared for me was professional, courteous and sincere in providing the best care possible. Dr. Kamyar Hagnani, an interventional cardiologist, and his team performed the angiogram and stent placements. Dr. Hagnani greeted us, went over the procedure and answered questions. The head OR nurse, Robin, explained what would happen and that she would stay with me throughout the procedure. I was wheeling into the operating room, mildly sedated and felt relaxed throughout the procedure. Afterwards I was taken to my room for observation overnight. The nursing staff was superb. RN Trang welcomed me to room 7125 and helped me get settled, a true pleasure working with her. A menu was provided and I phoned in my meal orders for dinner and breakfast. RN Trang brought me some cups of yogurt, pudding and jello that helped me through to the evening meal which arrived about 5pm. RN Tracey took over for the evening shift and saw me through the night with cheerful positive expert care. At first light RN Tracey turned me over to RN Zoe who provided my morning medication and prepared me for going home. A staff doctor from Dr. Hagnani's team visited and went over some final instructions. RN Gina did the final preps, helped me sign the final papers and ordered a wheel chair to take me downstairs. RN Pat visited just before I left giving me some information on the Scripps rehab programs available. I wish to offer my thanks to all these and the others that made me feel secure and confident that the best possible care was being provided. I'm a retired physician who has treated many, many patients in an ICU setting. I can confidently state that the Prebys Cardiovascular Institute is excellent in every respect. My cardiologist, Dr Martin Charlot is a superbly trained interventional cardiologist who completed an angiogram and placed two stents in the left anterior descending artery. The entire procedure went quickly, smoothly and professionally. In addition, one of the senior RN's, Darcy Armstrong, was reassuring and equally professional. While I'm only a couple weeks out of surgery, I feel great. Luckily, my issues were caught before an ER visit and I was able to research options and research surgeons. I believe my choice were spot on and if you have any say in the matter, I highly recommend Dr. Tyner (Cardiothoracic Surgery) and Prebys Cardiovascular Institute for the work. Dr. Tyner and his entire staff of nurses and PA-C's, etc have been absolutely top notch. Importantly, so is the staff at Preybs. I was super impressed with the nurses that took care of me and even more impressed with the 2 Navy Corpsmen who got out of the Navy and became nurses. They are serious, but also use appropriate humor; they have a great beside manner. When a doctor has your heart in his hands, literally, there is none better than Dr. Tyner and the entire group he leads and nowhere better than Prebys Cardiovascular Institute. read more

Great facility!! Nurses‍ are very nice and great at what they do. Great surgeons and have nice bedside manners. This a new facility is of course it's all state of the art. On the down side no free parking, no free coffee for those in surgery waiting room, and no available showers for out of town family waiting in rooms in ICU. read more

Visited family here and was glad to see it was a typical hospital environment... Clean, appropriately staffed etc. I really don't have much to say about it, we were in and out pretty quick. But apparently flowers are not allowed to be brought into the ICU - just a heads up for you visitors out there. read more

I debated between 3 and 4 stars but decided on 4 since the surgery done on my son went well - the most critical outcome. And the Surgeon and Physician's Assistant were excellent. What did not work so well was the fact I was first told I could not join my son (he's 16) in the post-surgery recovery room. I finally insisted and they let me in. Then it took four hours to get him to a room. During that time, he was given repeated doses of the narcotics for pain. However, when we finally got to a room (around 7:30 PM), there was a complete disconnect on what type of pain medication worked and it took a long, long time for the correct info/approvals to be processed. More work needs to be done, at least in our case, on facilitating a smooth handoff from post-surgery to recovery. Other thoughts: had some VERY terrific nurses! And the room in this new hospital building was beautiful. read more
