Precision Camera has repaired two of my Cameras successfully - my Minolta Maxxum 7 Film SLR Camera and most recently my Sony HDR-XR520V Camcorder! Unfortunately I don't have the records in front of me now, but around the year 2005, something in the electronics of my Minolta Maxxum 7 Film SLR Camera malfunctioned and I was unable to use it. Unfortunately it was out of warranty, so I had to get it repaired at my own expense. I contacted Sony for repair advice, since Minolta was leaving the camera business around that time. Sony referred me to Precision Camera Repair. After I sent it out via UPS, I was very impressed with the ease of following up on the repair status of my Minolta Camera through their website! Their repair work turnaround was quick and I got my Camera back in about two weeks, in excellent repair! Although I have not used my Minolta Maxxum 7 Camera since I retired it last year after buying my Nikon D5100 digital SLR Camera, it has and it still works perfectly well at this time! Most recently on January 29, 2012, the moveable lens covers of my Sony HDR-XR520 Camcorder got damaged and stayed jammed shut when I turned it on, making it unusable. Thankfully I had purchased a three year extended Warranty from Sony when I purchased my Sony Camcorder in 2009! I contacted Sony and they made the arrangements for Precision Camera Repair to send me a shipping box, so that all the repair work and shipping is free of charge to me under the three year extended Warranty contract. I sent it out on February 8, 2012 via UPS to the El Paso, TX repair center after receiving the Precision Camera Repair shipping box from UPS. On February 24, 2012, I received my Sony HDR-XR520V Camcorder back in excellent repair, with the lens covers working perfectly again! Amazingly the hard disk drive internal video and picture files all remained safe and intact! I am so impressed and very grateful for the prompt repair, the safety of my internal hard disk drive video and picture files, and the quick turnaround! After my two positive camera and camcorder repair experiences with Precision Camera, I would highly recommend them to my family and friends for camera repair work! I had a scratched sensor on my Nikon d80. This is a catastrophic problem on a slr as this is typically the heart, and most expensive of repairs. Precision camera had the sensor fixed and returned in less than 2 weeks, and for a mere $160. Excellent service - I could track progress of the repair and all calls/emails were returned. Also the cheapest rate out there for such a repair. To be honest, I expected it to be horrible, and I was very pleasantly surprised. Apparently this company just canned a large portion of their staff in CT. While that definitely sucks for the former employees, I suspect many of the bad reviews (for the CT location especially) are probably trolls/disgruntled employees. I sent my malfunctioning Nikon LS-9000 scanner to this service location for Precision Camera on June 13, 2011. In the original Nikon Box, with all original packing, insured. I did not hear from them as to when or how they got it, despite two emails to the main office. Their website for tracking orders did NOT work. Finally, I called this morning [7/1/11], and was told "Sorry, we couldn't fix it, its coming back". AND COME BACK IT DID. The pack job was 1 Layer of large bubble wrap. AROUND A $2400 FRAGILE MACHINE, PEOPLE!!! It was wrapped in the most casual manner, in a crappy, bunged-in box, NOT THE GOOD NIKON BOX I SENT IT IN. This was packed like they were sending a coat to Grand-dad from eBay. The front panel of the scanner was pried off the chassis. No telling what other horrors await the REAL NIKON repair techs. THIS HAS TO BE THE MOST HALF-ASSED PACK JOB I have ever seen. I regret to my everlasting shame that I WAS TAKEN IN BY YOUR WEBSITE. I should have sent it to Nikon. This facility is clearly incompetent. Was the package insured? God only knows. But I know one thing now--Precision Camera is breathtakingly incompetent when it comes to customer service, notification, and packing and shipping. Furthermore, I would like Company President and CEO John H. Malinosky how would he feel if he dropped off his car, wife, or kids anywhere, and they came back looking as though they'd been worked over with a hammer? That's what I thought too. read more

The plastic door on the battery compartment was broken on my camera, so the camera wouldn't work. I sent it to the Texas location about 5 weeks before we were leaving on a trip abroad. After about 9 days, I couldn't see in their tracking system that PC&V had received the camera. I called to find that it had been received, but had not been entered into their system. (THat left me wondering for how many days had it been sitting there.) They assured me that the following day, I would be able to see it on the tracking system. IT did not get entered the following day, leaving me to know that it had been sitting for days without being entered into the system. I complained, and was fortunate to have Charlene listen to me. She assured me that she would make my camera a priority in her life. SHe worked hard to keep an eye on the progress, and emailed, and called me several times to let me know what was happening. (They needed to order a new part.) The camera arrived just 3 days before we left on our trip. Charlene was kind enough to call me to be sure that it arrived and to wish me a good trip. You need to get Charlene working for you to be sure that your repair is being done in a timely maner. Without her, I have little doubt that my camera would have sat in a queue for more than the 5 weeks that it took to get that door replaced. read more

I recently took my SLR camera lens (a $1900 item) into Best Buy to tender the extended warranty due to some dust within the lens itself (which I believe was a manufacturer defect). Best Buy sent it out for repair and Precision Camera is where it ended up. Just 1 day short of 2 weeks later I received a call that my lens was back at Best Buy, repaired and ready to be picked up. What I received was my lens returned in an absolutely unusable state. Upon "Precision" Camera taking the lens apart and reassembling it at , the lens was packed with even more dust particles and a dirty, dusty ring around the edge of the inside my rear glass, a scratch/rub mark about the width of a fingertip, AND 3 scratches into the outside of that glass. I didn't even bother to look at the front glass as I was truly infuriated at what I saw, looking at the area that had prompted me to send it out in the first place. The fact that the lens was sent to a Best Buy inspection center and still sent back in that condition is unfathomable as well, but I'll save that for their review. When I had BB send the lens BACK out for a second time I made sure that my complaints were heard, and the next day I received a phone call from Precision Camera. It was what sounded like a receptionist, someone who had little knowledge of the item that I was talking about. She first asked if I was happy with the work done, as if she was never briefed on the issue I had at all. I tried explaining to her why the lens was sent in and the condition it was in when it was returned back, but she really didn't seem too interested to hear what I was saying. She then informed me that they had my lens and would repair it properly and send it back as soon as possible. She may or may not have apologized-- I forget. Based on my sole experience with this company, I would NOT recommend their services to anyone-- friend or enemy. I will, however write another post when I receive my lens back this second time-- to either vindicate, or put in the final nail. read more

I had a broken LCD on my Canon G10 digital camera. After reading numerous positive reports on the Precision Camera web site I thought I'd give them a try. But first, I tried to get in writing that not only would my LCD be fixed but my camera would receive a COMPLETE cleaning as there was a lot of dust inside the camera lens assembly, the viewfinder and the auto focus lens. A service rep assured me that the repairs of the camera included a thorough cleaning and return to "factory specifications." But that they would not supply me with anything in writing. (But nor would Canon so I was stuck. Again, I went with Precision.) I clearly wrote on the paper work order "Clean ALL optics. There is dust in the lenses!" This was around April 4, 2011. I got the camera back but not in the nine days they stated. I did not get the unit back until sometime during the first week of May. The LCD was replaced. But the lenses were as dusty as ever. I called and complained. They sent a pre-paid label and again, the camera went back. There it languished for the rest of May to the third week of June! When I checked for it online, the status was "waiting on parts backorder." Once the camera came back the second time I saw that at least the camera lens assembly was clean though the optical viewfinder was still cloudy with dust and the auto focus lens was still dirty inside. I eagerly took the camera on a wild horse count I was involved with in our local national forest. Shooting in broad daylight it is sometimes difficult to see exactly what you are getting on screen but to me it seemed as if the screen preview was soft. When I got home, sure enough, every shot was out of focus. I experimented on and off for a week with all of the settings I could think of with the camera thinking that something in the settings must have been set wrong. But could not find anything amiss. I called Precision Camera again Thursday, July 13, 2011. The operators were all busy but I was assured that I would be called back immediately. After 24 hours, no call. So I called again. This time I was passed to technical support. Again, a voice message left, again no call back. Now, four days later, when I call I keep getting passed to an "operator" whose mailbox is full and am asked to call again later. Calling the Texas repair center number listed on the web gets you a fax machine. Argh! My experience with this company has been one of frustration from the very beginning. Not only could I not get anything in writing, but the lackluster care that they gave my repairs denotes either an overworked staff (or worse, an untrained staff), lack of quality control, and a like of pride in workmanship. I have not been able to use my camera since April and it is now mid-July!!! I saw a news report that they laid off a whole bunch of staff in April. It would seem that Precision Camera is a ship floundering and about to sink. Stay away! read more

If you have a really good lens or camera - look elsewhere! I submitted my Carl Zeiss, ,Sony T* f2,8 24-70mm zoom lens (weighs a lot due to the many glass elements) for repair 3 times for the same issue. The issue was it would not focus beyond about 10 feet - a drop was the cause. Each time they pronounced it was fine - really? They never placed the lens on a camera body to test it or just lied. In manual mode or auto it would not focus past 10 feet. The camera body in use by me was the Sony Alpha 77 and 55. They both used the lens prior to the fall and it focused normally. After reading on the website about fast turn around and excellent service I decided to go with precision camera... Big mistake! Not only had my camera not been logged in but seemed to have been lost by them. To top it off I was lied to by customer service as to the time they received my camera and would not let you talk to the manager. It's been well over 3 weeks and still no camera. If you value your equipment be forewarned. I'll never do business with precision camera again. Ever!!! read more

7/4/13. I am not one to write an review but I must warn you, if you have a fairly new Sony Camera, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT use this company!!!! If I could, I would give them half a star for sending out their package nicely. Other than that they are not worth a dime! I have a Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX100V and the jog dial no longer works. It moves but barely moves any of the EV, ISO, values. Basically, the value on the screen changes only from EV 0 to -0.3. or the ISO from 100 to 125 and not more. This is the company that Sony Extended Warranty uses in my area. I sent the camera in 3 times, each time it was sent back with a polite note that says "unable to duplicate the malfunction in your unit." I confirmed it with everyone I know to see when the jog dial is pressed and turned, if the values (numbers) on the screen changed... everyone confirms that it is not working. To be on the safe side, on the second attempt, I took a picture of the camera and indicated what the problem was in case if the technician did not know what a jog dial was and the connection between the jog dial and the values on the screen... Ssame result, unable to duplicate the problem. So I called the Extended Warranty and they wanted to give this "great company" one more try... Ok. This time I wrote a letter indicating their previous two tries and included a more detailed picture of the camera and the problem. I just got it back today 7/4/13. Same comment and camera was NOT fixed!!!!! My e mail address and phone number was on the return slip, not once did anyone curious enough to call or e-mail me and find out why a camera was sent back to them 3 times and they could not "find the problem..." It appear to be a receive-and-send-back game to them. Please save yourselves the aggrevation of even try to use this company. At least not with the latest Sony camera. And double check their work, who knows if they actually did anything with your camera. Think twice before you even consider this company. Perhaps for older camera they may be good at but certainly not with anything that's new. read more

Mixed feelings about this one. I called and they told me my lens would be ready in 10 days after they received it and I finally got my lens today, 14 days later. However, this only happened because I made a fuss because they never e-mailed me after receiving it. I had to call them. So they put a rush order and I got it 4 days after they said I would. They are fairly inexpensive so they have a large volume so don't be surprised if they take inventory of your lens a few days after they actually receive it. The work itself was no great either. They did clean my lens but the barrel still turns with some problems. Ideally they should have called me and asked to replace something to fix that. They didn't and whoever cleaned the lens didn't rotate the barrel enough to see that it's rough. So, not paying attention to detail I guess. Overall 2.5 stars not 3 and they only sorta made things right after I called several times and I'm not thrilled with the work! read more

I sent my camcorder in for a repair of loud motor noise when zooming in or out. I called them weeks later and found out they ordered an lcd screen. Nothing was wrong with mine! They never did tell me what was wrong with it . They did say there was no handling damage when they got the camera after I asked. I let them know that I wanted the camera back in the same condition as when I sent it in to them (not all busted up). I got it back (about 2 months later) and the product feature sticker was missing on the outside of the camera when I specifically asked them to include it when the camera came back. The zoom noise was still there even worse than ever. I called Precision Camera, then JVC, but I have a hunch nothing will be done about it. If this is as good as warranty repair gets, buy one of their competitors products that doesn't use this outfit for warranty repairs. Precision Camera's communication is horrible: when you call them, the message goes to the El Paso office from the Connecticut office. From what I hear the Connectcut office was ok for repairs. The El Paso office is living up to their reputation! read more
