I recently switched from my prior accountant due to a change in my tax situation. I was referred to Nam who was amazing for multiple reasons. I would highly recommend him without reservation to anyone who may have a more complex tax situation or who would like to receive quality financial planning advice. First, he is efficient, concise, and easy to understand to the layperson. Our meetings were always on time and he had a road map for each meeting. Any questions I had, he explained clearly and took extra time if I needed further clarification. Second, he is very knowledgeable. I am in medicine and he immediately knew of all the tax issues relevant to my profession that I brought up to him. He was able to guide me on what was the best option for things like retirement contributions and plans, rental properties, as well as what I should and should not be doing currently with my money. He noticed a mislabeled deduction in one of my tax forms that had gone unnoticed in the prior year. After a complimentary phone consultation where i explained what our tax situation was, we made an appointment with Brian. He said it would take 1 hour and sent me a list of all the things to bring. When we arrived, he said that our tax situation wasn't very complicated so he was going to have us meet with the accountant that works for him. We were still charged the rate that we were told we would pay to see Brian, the CPA. The appointment took an hour and 45 minutes. We asked about the situation that brought us in in the first place and he said he would have to do research because he didn't know. I give 2 stars instead of one because Brian did give us a partial refund after i contacted him. He was calm, collected, knowledgeable, and professional -- in contrast to the frenetic pace and indifference of other tax offices I visited during their busiest season. Extremely happy that I found Brian and U-Save Tax! I found U-Save Tax days before April 15th and they managed to process all of my documentation so that I could file my federal taxes on time. I had been filing my own taxes using TurboTax for years and started to think that perhaps the one-size-fits-all solution wasn't actually saving me money. The 2013 tax year was a bit more complicated than previous years for me--I bought a house, I got married to a foreigner, I bought and sold quite a bit of stocks, etc--and after going over all the steps in TurboTax three times, I felt it was time to compare my own results with a tax professional's. The amount that U-Save Tax ended up saving me on my tax bill was more than enough to pay for their services for the REST OF MY LIFE (and probably my future kids' lives). Just thinking about how much I would have overpaid if I went ahead and filed my taxes with TurboTax again makes me cringe. Details below: Lack of Timeliness, Responsiveness, Trustworthiness, Reliability: Said taxes would be done a in week Emailed him 1.5 weeks later, no reply (later said that he did not see the email) Called him, left a message and emailed him 2 weeks later -- finally got email from him that our taxes were done and to schedule an appointment with him After notifying us that our taxes were done, he later emailed us back saying that he was missing information from us... so our taxes were, in fact, not done Errors on tax returns: Did not check off correct dependents' box, which would have resulted in our paying extra $600 if we did not catch this mistake Did not report correct donations amount, which would have resulted in our paying extra $80 if we did not catch this mistake (he attributed this error to not seeing the emails) Did not list both children under dependent care form (minor error that may not have result in any net difference) In summary, for our relatively simple tax return, he made 2 relatively large mistakes . We were charged $450 for 2016 tax returns. Not to mention I had to spend a few hours going through his work and correcting him on 2 of his revised versions of our relatively simple tax return. He also charged us $450 for 1040x, to correct for incorrect reporting of mortgage and depreciation. He charged us 50% of what the IRS *may* refund and which eventually did not. So we paid him an extra $450 for nothing. Will be doing our taxes ourselves this year, for sure and save ourselves nearly $1000 along with a lot of frustration. If you choose to use Brian Chong, please double, triple check his work. P.S. We recently got notified by the IRS that Brian made an error on our 2016 returns. Now we have to pay back taxes plus interest / fine. It was an error that could have easily been detected by an experienced tax professional or tax prep software (childcare tax deduction). I hope that we were just really unlucky with Brian and that others don't have to deal with this level of incompetence. read more
