Gil Travel was completely unresponsive for 10 days leading up to my flight, so I tried to cancel the flight with the airline directly, which due to the war was only offering WhatsApp support through an automated system that required a booking number to get through. I of course couldn't get through because I had the wrong booking information. Gil remained unresponsive the entire time until well after my flight had already passed. The process to get the flight extension confirmed in the first place was also painful and required an extraordinary amount of follow up with Gil Travel. Many in my group shared the same stressful experience of not knowing whether we should take our original flights back because Gil Travel was not responding and did not end up confirming until the last minute. They'll try to blame this on the airlines -- but that doesn't really justify non-response to their customers experienced by several people. From start to finish, working with this agency caused unnecessary stress in an already tumultuous time.

We stopped in with friends from Asia who wanted to buy travel and touring in Miami, Florida (Can't blame them!). The elderly gentleman who greeted us moved with deliberate care, but was friendly and attempted to assist. From observation, this shop is not licensed as a travel agency, but acts to consolidate travelers for an offsite provider of direct services. All he had were brochures; not even a computer for bookings. The opposite wall had medicinal herbs for sale. There was another corner for watch repair. We didn't do business here, as it was obvious the owner had an indirect relationship with travel, and knew little about the business. Still, we accepted what information he had, thanked him, and continued on our way. In fact, there are several such "travel service" offices around the neighborhood, and most of them seem to be only looking for a commission for passing the customer down the line to the actual agency. No need to deal with any of them if you are internet savvy. All is available to those who know how to seek. An interesting cultural experience to watch, but not one to buy into.

Their website describes the day by day activities and hotels, so you can see the list there. I liked about half of the hotels, but some I would not stay in again like the Hilton in Central Munich, Germany. The breakfast was awful in my opinion and the one dinner wasn't that much better. Our room was alright, but the refrigerator didn't work. They brought an extra one that took up space on the floor. Since Gate 1 books your hotels you don't have control over their hotel choices. Our room at the Hyatt in Mainz smelled like mold, but the hotel kindly switched that room for us. I think my favorite hotel was the AC Marriott in Innsbruck. The food, rooms and location were great. Nadine Sandranowsky was our tour director for our small group of 24. She was great and always did a great job from start to beginning. I would recommend Gate 1 Travel as you do get more bang for your buck.

Safety should always come first, yet Gate1 Travel has refused to allow us to cancel our trip for a refund. We have asked for a travel credit, however, a credit is only valid if all travelers from the original booking travel together on a future trip. This policy is completely unreasonable and makes the credit far less useful. To make matters worse, some members of our party purchased travel insurance, only to learn that concerns about traveling to a region experiencing armed conflict or significant unrest are not covered. That defeats much of the purpose of purchasing the insurance in the first place. We are extremely disappointed by Gate 1 Travel's lack of flexibility and compassion. When travelers have legitimate safety concerns, companies should work with their customers rather than hide behind rigid policies. Based on this experience, I would think twice before booking with Gate 1 Travel again.
