It had such an awesome deserted, "Nighthawks" look to it, I had to stop in. High-ceilinged cavernous room with 1930's deco bar on the right, and a line of plain wooden booths on the left. No art on the walls, other than some 8x10 black and white photos of St. Paul landmark buildings. The whole place smelled a little like City Salvage - like everything in there had been left in place, untouched, for decades. The building is the oldest commercial building in Minnesota - erected in 1858, and used as an armory in the Civil War era. I was amazed that I hadn't heard of this place before. It has such a speakeasy vibe, and is the perfect spot for a quiet drink at the end of a raucous evening before you slip home and call it a night. I would move to downtown St. Paul just so I could call this my neighborhood bar. So you ask, "Then why only three stars?" and that is a valid question. The answer: If there's one thing I can't stand, it's a tease. This Shangri-freaking-La of watering holes is open for a grand total of seven days. Just for the RNC, and then it's shuttered again while the descendants of the Original Coney Island Proprietors try to make it financially feasible to open up again permanently. I await their success with bated breath, and will adjust my rating accordingly as soon as I know I can come here year-round to find a fantastic drink in a fantastic atmosphere.

We took a seat in the parlor and were checked in, given a few recommendations for dinner, then shown our room. I enjoyed the library and parlor rooms very much. We stayed in Margaret's room and slept peacefully. The attention to detail, antiques and such, were spot on. Coffee and tea were brought up to our room at 8:15 in the morning, and left outside our door. A music box was played so that we knew when our beverages were at our door. Fantastic! And we got these amazing little muffins in the cutest little tray/basket. Breakfast was at 9am in the formal dining room. I found the seat with my name next to it, and joined the other guests for a three course breakfast. During our third coarse, we were given a brief history about the house from the inn keeper. Very interesting, indeed. All in all, a wonderful experience.

I have been coming here for years now for the AYCE Friday Night Fish Fry. Think they used to have it during Lent only, but their website says they opened it up in January this year so maybe not just Lent anymore. Met the Fish Fry connoisseur, Brian R, here along with his wife and newborn. A good time was had by all. $14.95 for the AYCE buffet. Four types of fish tonight: baked cod, beer-battered cod, cajun fried walleye and cajun fried tilapia. The only one I didn't care for much was the baked cod. Kind of on the cold side, but I think I grabbed the last couple filets in the tray. The rest was supurb. Like the sides almost as much as the fish. The Mac N Cheese, the baked bean casserole and the wild rice are all standouts. They also have a soup and salad bar, of which I did not partake of this evening, and a dessert bar, of which I did partake. Can never say no to cheesecake - some fruit topping would have been nice, though. They get pretty crowded. Told it would be a 25 minute wait, but ended up being much quicker. If you can, see if you can get seated in the bar area rather than the main dining room. It is a much more relaxed vibe.

I've been to the RC several times over the years for various events. I recently attended a…read moregraduation here and it was a mess all around. The students were provided a limited number of tickets to ensure seating - they did scan tickets if you had them but it definitely wasn't enforced. The line to get in was chaotic. Despite there being multiple entrances to the center they only had 1 single line for hundreds of people - including the grads to enter. The security and staff did a poor job at managing the flow & logistically the security area was a waste. They were supposed to stop letting people in at 10:30 but didn't start moving the line until after 10:20. The gradation had a 11 start and started late (but that could have been more so the schools side, not sure). Most people were directed to sit upstairs. Very difficult to hear upstairs. Also when the graduation was over they locked us upstairs for over 20 min - preventing people from leaving. This was deeply concerning - for many safely reasons as it was already running over time and people had places to be. I will definitely avoid attending these types of events here.

Coffee, juice, hot water/tea, Coke products, flavored sparking water. Tap Water pitchers on the individual round tables, along with jolly ranchers. **Sour candies for a Dental seminar! Hmm!?!** Plenty of women's restroom stalls for all these people. Clean and stocked. Easy, close parking across Kellogg Blvd. Take the skyway across to avoid traffic and unpleasant weather. However, coworkers and I carpooled in a Tahoe and barely fit under ceiling clearance. Be mindful if you have a Super Duty Deluxe Extended Cab Truck! You won't make it in.
