Went to the castle haunt with my 9 year old and we had a blast. They chased my kid all through the castle. He had the greatest time. He left with a smile on his face and sweating from all the excitement. We will definitely go back next year! read more

What a cool place! I had driven by this castle a hundred times before always wondering if the public was allowed to tour this cool looking place. I had seen a segment on Eye On The Bay so I did a quick Google search and saw that they do tours and are open to the public. I met a friend there and we did the tour together. Their credit card machine was down that day so be sure to bring cash. It was $10.00 for the tour which lasted a little bit over 1 hour. The tour guides were knowledgeable about the history of the castle but there was a lot of the castle that you weren't allowed to enter because it was unsafe. I was there to take photos mostly and I felt very rushed. We were told that we would return to this one section of the floor but we never did. We would all go into a room and about 2 minutes later we would be on to another room. I think I'm going to return and take advantage of one of the other options to stay and tour the castle for a longer period. It's a neat place, and worth a visit, in my opinion. read more

Preston castle haunt What a joke? Poorly organized. Waited 2 hours in line and watched people get turned away because they were sold out. Amazing how many people stood in the rain. All 3 of my uncles were there on my Dad's side. My Dad was the only one not to go out of the boys in his family. I haven't visited but since everyone of my uncles went on to bigger and worse institutions, I cannot give it a 5 star rating. read more

I really hope this place finds funding because it's a great landmark. The tour was fun and informative and it's nice to be able to take pictures in the hopes you catch something spooky. A truly fantastic sight, and the best attraction in Amador County, it's very popular with ghost hunters and photographers and not to be missed if you come to Amador County at a time when there are tours of the castle (first and third weekends through the summer). My parents worked there in the late 40's and early 50's and there is some amazing history there, including an unsolved murder that occurred while we lived there, and some famous inmates who were incarcerated there. My mother had a theory about who killed Anna Corbin, I think it was. The state was allowing this local treasure to become a ruin but local citizens have now taken it over and are trying mightily to preserve and restore it, piece by piece. Right next door is the gulag style Preston Prison which closed recently. I find the juxtaposition of these two institutions highly dramatic and instructive. Admittedly, it's kinda creepy there at times, but it's an experience. Don't miss it if you pass this way, or live nearby. You'd be surprised how many do. read more

My friend and I recently visited Preston Castle for their Halloween night. It was our first time ever, and we absolutely LOVED it! It was scary and fun, the walk-through was about 15-20 min, Totally worth it. I am one of those types of people who don't get spooked easily, but this house got me scared at times, the actors were amazing! I would highly recommend this tour! We went to check out the haunted house this past weekend. It was awesome! great costumes. While standing in the (very long) line, several costumed characters mingle with the crowd. Its great watching a zombie or werewolf sneak up behind an unsuspecting guest who isn't expecting a scare until they get inside. The only con i can think of is the line coordination and parking. There is a shuttle that takes you from the lower lot to the castle, but its a bit confusing where to catch it. We ended up walking, and is wasn't so bad. The line situation was very unorganized and confusing. I think there needs to be a more clearly defined line. For awhile we all just kinda stood around and didn't know where to go or who to ask ( most of the haunted house staff are in costume, but so were some of the patrons). Make sure to purchase tickets in advance!!!!! This place is very popular, so get there early, or expect to stand inline for awhile.. We had tickets, but we still stood in line for almost an hour before we got to go in. The wait wasn't bad though. Lots of people watching to do. The Jamba Juice booth outside the castle did kind of ruin the spooky ambiance, however... Overall, this was a fun experience. Ill definitely check it out again next year. read more

This building has so much history to offer. The history is rich, the docents are knowledgeable and the architecture stunning. Tours don't cost much and the money goes back into the restoration of the building. The inside is rough as the building saw years without a roof, but the foundation has gone beast mode on restoration and years of hard work have paid off to yield a fantastic walking tour that covers two floors, plus a basement. It is recommended to come earlier in the day as the 50,000 square foot fixer-upper doesn't have air condition. Nevertheless, the whole experience will enrich you with a sense of history and the ideals of another age. read more

This review is for the Haunted Tour Only What started out as a super fun evening turned into a very upsetting one. We were laughing and joking around in line and loved getting scared by all the scary people. Right before we went in, one of the workers went over the rules. He specifically said "do not touch any cast members because they will not touch you". NOT TRUE! Not 5 minutes later, as soon as we entered the building, one of the cast members flicked my 11 year old in the forehead. He told her she couldn't touch him and her response was "oh yes I can". Not cool! But I let it go because I didn't want to make an issue out of it. We start the tour and get about half way thru. The cast members were great. They got some really good scares out of us. Then out of the blue, security shows up and starts screaming at my kids, accusing them of touching and breaking some of the props. I was shocked that they didn't approach me (the parent) or take us aside to question us. They literally screamed at my kids and threatened to kick them out. What made me the most angry was that it wasn't even my kids that touched anything. It was the adult male right in front of us that broke a skeleton and security just assumed it was children that did it. So now as the tour continues, my kids are paranoid and embarrassed, to the point that my son (the same one that got flicked in the forehead) is now in tears. All the while, the same adult male in front of us still won't stop messing with the props and is touching everything (which was announced multiple times that you would be thrown out if you did those things). Security never confront him. And they totally owe my children an apology. Spent $200 on tickets for this place. Not a happy mama!!! read more

This year's Halloween haunted house was fantastic! This was my grandsons first Haunted House... He was totally scared.. there was one part where we were going up the stairs and around a corner, a guy dressed in a scream costume scared the crap out of him.. The guy felt so bad, he took off his mask, put his arm around my grandson and told him that " its ok, Im just a guy with a mask and just remember everyone in here is just wearing makeup". I thought that was soo dang sweet! So I just wanted to say THANK YOU SCREAM GUY ON THE STAIRS! :) The food vendor KJ's old-fashioned dogs had excellent Polish dogs. I visited Preston castle on their yearly photographer's day, where they are generous enough to let us inside to have free reign of the castle (with some rules of course). The docents were great, and the castle and grounds were perhaps some of the most spectacular in regards to creepy semi-abandoned places I've been to. Highly recommended. read more

My sister and I just completed our overnight ghost hunting experience here. We had a wonderful time and I hope to return again some day. It started with everyone arriving outside the castle gate, waiting for it to be opened. We all parked directly in front of Preston Castle, which was decorated for Christmas. We all gathered in the meeting room-which is located in the rear of Preston Castle. Everyone turned in their signed form and their paypal receipt. The rules were explained and then everyone was shown the areas of the castle that would be investigated. We were then divided into groups. Many breaks were given throughout the night You are allowed to eat/drink any food or beverages you bring in the meeting room and there is a fridge provided where you can keep your drinks cold. The restrooms are located in this area as well. We did not "see" any ghosts or capture anything in our pictures, but we did get EVPs and have a great time! Our investigator was Karen and she was great! It is a pleasure to investigate with someone who is truly interested in the same thing, which is connecting with spirits in the castle. We got EVPs with a little boy's voice (Miguel) along with footsteps, running water sounds, a couple bangs, etc. We had such a fun time investigating Preston Castle, but it was very cold. If you go to investigate in cold weather like we did, be sure to dress in layers, wear a beanie/scarf on your head, wear gloves and bring hand warmers to keep your hands warm. Wearing boot type shoes will help keep your feet warm. Bring a flashlight and you can also bring your own ghost hunting equipment to use. Our investigator had a lot of her own equipment which was an added plus: a tape recorder, an ovulus, these cool lights that light up if presence is near and a K-2 meter. I never had to get my equipment out. Since it was a cold night out, the sky was clear so it was full of stars to view. There was only a few of us left at 4 am., but we ended the night was a closing prayer..asking the spirits to not follow us home and to stay put, etc. I hope to return here again some day for another hunt. If you want the truth about it though a reliable source would be the books written by Jaime Rubio, she has done extensive research, talked with the families to be as accurate as she can. These days the castle spends most of its time trying to get as much money as they can by sponsoring places like Ghost Adventures to come out & pretend there is paranormal stuff going on. Wish it would stick to the history. It's in bad shape also & I hope one day to see it getting some work it so desperately needs. read more

The haunted house itself, was awesome.. wouldn't change a thing. However, my experience over all last night totally SUCKED due to their very poor management. Paid $20 for admission. Waited in line 1 hour before entering the gate. Then after our tickets were scanned we had to wait another 2 hours before entering the haunted house. A 3 hour wait... RIDICULOUS. We got to the point of, "we already paid, and waited 1 hour.. we'll keep going". then "Dang, we've waited 2 hours, what's the hold up?". Everyone around us was complaining. My friend went to speak with employees who did not appear too concerned. We were regular admission. They upgrade tickets to VIP for $15. VIP means you get to cut everyone else in line AND go twice. So they were telling people outside the gate to upgrade their tickets and so they could cut everyone. Then all those people basically got to cut everyone TWICE! So all of us who passed the gate were getting repeatably cut. The Haunt opened at 7:00 and went to 11:00. We arrived at 7:00. Entered the castle at 10:00. At the time we entered the castle, the line was out to the street. when we exited the castle, the ENTIRE LINE WAS GONE. Which means, they were giving smaller, more personal tours for the first 3 hours. Then in the last hour rushed everyone through. I would understand if I showed up at 10:00, so I got rushed through. But no... we waited 3 and got pushed through. Many people around us were saying "they just did this so everyone would pay to upgrade" making the experience awful for everyone just to make an extra buck. You would have been better off charging everyone $25 rather than having VIPs. Complete bullshit. We wanted to leave at the 2 hour mark but they do not offer refunds. We had a group of 14 people, $280 spent ... so we stuck it out. HAUNTED HOUSE VOLUNTEERS: Keep up the good work. all the kids did such an impressive job. I'm sorry that whoever is in charge is ruining it for you guys! ... I hope you don't take any negative reviews personally. The haunted house was totally worth my $20. This review is specifically for "Photographers Day" which is offered a few times year. This is a wonderful opportunity for those shutterbugs who wish they had a little bit more time through out the guided tours to get some great shots without feeling rushed. The site has so much to offer and ample places to shoot. All of the Docents were very knowledgeable and seem to love working at the castle for one reason or another. Being so familiar with the castle, several offered up fantastic suggestions of things or views to shoot and were willing to hold a window open or move some rubble out of the way to help with getting the perfect photo. Their positive attitudes made the day so enjoyable. I was greatful for the opportunity to shoot this site and for a mere $30 for four hours, I'd call that an amazing deal. The only suggestion I would have for the castle is to consider having a photographers day specifically for individual photographers seperate from those bringing models, lighting equipment, and assistants. There were several rooms in the castle that were in essence unavailable to shoot in because they were dominated by the photographers directing their models and or leaving their equipment laying about. While they paid their money just as the rest of us, I can't necessarily fault anyone but I think it would benifit the individual photographers to have the opportunity to not be restricted by the larger productions and vice versa for the larger productions not having to be pestered by those just wanting to snap a few shots where they had left their equipment. But with event, pack your patience and smiles and you'll be fine. I would recommend this site to anyone interested in history, photography, ghost hunting, etc. A wonderful experience that I would do again in a heart beat. read more

This review is for the Preston Castle Haunt. If I had to choose one word to summarize my feelings towards this even it would be...YES. Just...SO MUCH YES. For the past few years, my boyfriend and I have made it a bit of a tradition to seek out local haunted houses in the area. We love this time of year and try to celebrate it as much as possible throughout the month of October. This was my first experience at Preston Castle (or even the rad, sleepy little town of Ione, actually). We brought my mom with us and as we were approaching the castle standing there on the top of hill in all of its' glory, we were literally screaming and yelling in awe and excitement. The sight of that monstrous building located in what seems like the middle nowhere was absolutely breathtaking. Possibly one of the coolest things I have ever laid my eyes on. Pictures don't do it justice. We had read some complaints of previous attendees being stuck in line for upwards of three hours so we decided to arrive an hour early (at 6pm), bring a picnic, and stake out a spot (the gates open at 6:45 but the line forms on the road near the parking lot). I highly recommend getting there early if you do not have a VIP ticket. We waited an hour outside of the gate, yes, but we were one of the first few groups who got to enter the castle! We had one person keep our spot in line while the other two explored the surrounding, creepy areas (which was so much fun..I felt like a child gleefully frolicking through an old, dilapidated, yet strangely beautiful wasteland..) The house itself was mind blowing. Like I said, we have been through almost all of the haunted houses in the El Dorado County and Sacramento regions and not one can even begin to compare to this. It took about 25 minutes to walk through. The atmosphere was beyond creepy (I mean..c'mon..you are walking through a truly haunted castle), the actors were GREAT (kudos to them for hanging out for hours in this scary-ass place and staying in character), and the decor was PERFECT (not too much or too little..just right). Also, it wasn't super gory at all which I appreciated. They didn't take anything too over-the-top and that subtle nature definitely added to the over all creep level. They did such an amazing job! I felt genuinely frightened a handful of times..to the point where I wasn't sure if I could keep walking..but this is the kind of feeling that I live for. I love being scared out of my mind! I pretty much did a combination of scream-laughing the entire 25 minutes. I was 100% soaked in sweat when I walked out. With all of these things in mind, I can confidently say they did their job scaring the hell outta me. The only slight complaint I have was that it can be difficult to fully enjoy an experience like this when you are having pacing issues with the groups in front of and behind you. We had a group of teens who were trailing us who wanted to run (and kept banging into us) and a lady in front of us who was absolutely terrified and kept freezing and stopping. This wasn't a huge deal, just a bit annoying. So...I cannot recommend this place enough. The entire car ride home I was trying to remember everything that had just gone down and it was difficult. There was so much to see and feel and smell. It was an absolute horror sensory overload. In the best way possible, of course! I am glad we didn't have to wait for hours to get in and I could see how this would take away from the experience. However, by planning ahead we were able to avoid this and had such a stellar experience! My body aches today from being tense, scared, and stressed. The Preston Castle Haunt did it job and it did its' job well! I am so glad we have a new yearly tradition..and I absolutely cannot wait to come back for a flashlight tour! I investigated Preston Castle on 4/12/14 with the group, the Bay Area Ghost Hunters. Based on my experiences and the EVPs collected, I believe the place is haunted! Our group had the whole Castle to ourselves from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. The docents were great guides. While the Castle is important historically, it is also an excellent place to investigate spirit activity. Others in my group reported seeing shadows and orbs; in the early evening we smelled a woman's perfume around us several times as we toured the Castle--and no one was wearing anything with a scent! I am excited to review my digital recording to see if I captured anything. This is a definite Must-Go! read more

Let's just say that yesterday I would have given this place 5 stars because I had a wonderful experience on photographers day. We had the whole place to ourselves we could go pretty much anywhere we wanted. It was great. However, I decided to return for the Halloween ball. This is when I became sadly disappointed with the staff. First off, we paid 20$ a ticket. That is twice the amount people pay for the haunted house mind you. So, I expected to be able to experience the haunted house portion along with an additional perk of a bar and a dance floor. Unfortunately, this was not the case. The entire castle was off limits to paying patrons. The "ball" was secluded and in the courtyard. They charged 2$ for a can of soda 6$ for an extreemly weak mixed drink. The dj played a mixture of the best of journey and the dougie. I was very disappointed and felt like I was back in high school. We were about 2 hours into the event when the dj announced that they had a surprise for everyone and that they would be doing tours for everyone! We all cheered as most everyone was having a pretty crappy time. Then he announced that they would be auctioning off the two tours and everyone all sighed and yelled awwwwwwnnn. Needless to say we didn't get a tour as the highest bidders paid 500$ for the tour. Talk about a rip off. I won't be returning for any of their overpriced events. Lastly, the majority of the volunteers were rude, unorganized, confused and, not even dressed in costume. They, by far were the worst part of my experience. read more

If you visit the Castle other than the designated tour times you won't be able to get very close to the Castle. It is completely fenced in! The fence is set back quite a ways at least 100 feet. We're definitely going back for a tour! The place is awesome! read more

We took the daytime tour of the Preston Castle ("Preston School of Industry" 1894-1960) yesterday and were all very impressed! It is a fascinating look at a historic moment in California history when rehabilitation was the norm for youthful offenders rather than incarceration. Numerous soon-to-be-famous individuals were wards at Preston in their youth - Merle Haggard (country music legend), Rory Calhoun (40's to 80's actor, Pancho Gonzales (one of the greatest professional tennis players), Eddie Anderson ("Rochester" on the Jack Benny show), Eddie Machen (heavyweight boxer) and many others. The wards helped make the school self-sustaining by working in industries on the premises such as tailoring and shoe/boot-making (from leather they got from cows on the premises), baking, agriculture, printing, band, electrical and many others. This is a highly recommended tour of the inside and outside of this amazing institution. It's a California - and Federal - landmark. You will not be disappointed! And it was only $10 per ticket. They also have an evening flashlight tour as well as a paranormal tour if that's your thing. There are a significant number of stairs. If you are disabled or challenged in climbing stairs, this is not for you. read more

Great tour! The castle is so imposing and great! Whether or not you are a fan of the ghost TV shows, you will enjoy the history of the place. Fun stories, famous people connections...just a great little piece of California history. Our tour lasted about one hour and it was worth every penny. My only complaint is that they need to work on cleaning up some of the mouse droppings. They are everywhere. But the place is in disrepaire so it may be hard for them to stay on top of it. As we drove onto the property, I got an eery feeling immediately, but was soon disappointed. We went on the tour tonight and expected more of a historical tour with some scares and some possible legit ghost encounters. When we got there, it was fun to see the people dressed up as part of the scare, but it wound up being too commercialized. If I wanted that, I would have gone to a regular old haunted house attraction like Del Osso. Scary but not a real paranormal experience. On the way out though, the car was sensing something in front of it...but nothing was there and it kept beeping. Once we got out onto the road though, it stopped. It could have been a real cool experience if they didn't try to make it like any other haunted house. read more

I bought $80 tickets (each) for my best friend & I to go to a 9/6/2013 " Mediumship and Ghost Hunting Preston Castle Fund Raiser". I figured it was a good cause even if it turned out to be a dud. To say the tour was disorganized is a gross understatement. The 3 or 4 people running the show seemed like they were trying to "take up time" with filler, and that they'd not discussed or planned ANYTHING in advance. It was drivel. It was like they thought the more time they wasted with words and blank space (while we were all standing up -- no chairs -- in a room) the more we'd feel like we got our $$$'s worth? Idiots. One of the time-wasting tour guides DID have a story I appreciated, about a statue of Mary that had been found on the premises which she restored -- although numerous remarks were made about how the broken hand which was "restored" was significantly larger than it should have been... I missed that. There were three valuable and very desirable prizes (an added "benefit", in my mind) to be given away on a scavenger's hunt, but there was no coordination about opening up the scavenger hunt. Therefore, some groups were told they could search, while others were told to wait, so two of the three prizes were found before our group was even told the searching had begun. We didn't get a chance to participate in finding a single item. The groups were beyond unorganized, the guides (with one exception) were boring as heck (to the point people started wandering off on their own). It's too bad, because the place is a COOL place. The night had incredible potential... but it was a *complete* waste of time and $160. Like I said, I'd've been happy to contribute the $160 I spent to the renovation, but was so disappointed and annoyed, I've changed my mind about even that. The night (including the bizarre mishmash of snacks served, which included HUGE HUGE platters of deviled eggs (we were still experiencing summer heat and the facility had minimal electricity and NO refrigerators... probably not the smartest choice to bring for snacks...) and lots of cookies, "Would you like a deviled egg with that cookie?") would have been worth, all told, perhaps a $5 donation. I feel horrible for rating them this way -- especially a relatively local non-profit. My friend and I were so excited... I was mortified she flew in from out of state and the focal point of her trip, which *I* had recommended, was a miserable flop. If they'd pulled off even a SEMBLANCE of a worthwhile event, I'd take every out of town guest there. As it was, it's a very cool building with the most boring, inept, and disorganized event guides or coordinators on the planet. For ME to get mad at an event like that, it has to be beyond bad. This certainly matched that descriptor. read more

By far my favorite place to visit in Amador County. I have been to Preston Castle four times (1. March 2011 - 2. September 2016 - 3&4. 2017) and it never stops making me want to come back. It fascinating and amazing to learn the history and how the wards were treated. There's really one word I can use to describe this place. EPIC. We had a great tour guide (Don) that made our tour. It was interesting. My teens liked it. We also went with a couple of other kids (4 & 5) and after 45 min they weren't that interested anymore. It was a little over an hour tour. You also need to be able to go down the stairs for the tour. Not a lot of steps but it would be hard for somebody with a walker. If you like ghosts take Don's tour. He has some interesting stories. I guess people also pay $150 to sleep in this place every year...no thanks! read more

My daughter in law & I went on the overnight ghost tour. It begins at 6pm and ends at 4am. I suggest you get to Ione, Ca earlier that day and get a room at The Ione Hotel. It's 5 min away and at 4am you will want to get to a bed quick. Our experience was awesome. Orbs floating by on video, laughing and unexplained voices / noises on EVP recorders. A lot of spirit box communication. But most exciting they pulled my hair so hard my glasses flew off my head. They punked me good. But I did give them permission to touch me. They messed with me a lot that night. 10/13/2012. I will never forget and I can't wait to return. I do wish the tour started a little later and ended later like 8pm to 6am. I felt 4am was the time the spirits were just warming up. The docents are awesome thank you for all your patience and guidance. read more

What an awesome tour! We visited for the Friday night tour and had a lovely experience. Kathleen and her husband were excellent guides who, along with having a wealth of knowledge about the history, made us feel really welcome and valued our presence, as well as our questions. It was equally eerie, interesting and educational, and is a great gift or experience for a history buff.
