Butchered my long hair outdoor cat. Rather than comb out matted areas and sparingly shave areas as needed to remove mats, Shelly shaved her entirely - body, legs, and around her face. My cat is 8, she has an annual grooming and she has never once been butchered like this. If the groomer was not skilled enough to remove matted areas with a brush rather than without wholly shave her, they should have called to ask me what I'd like to do. My outdoor cat now has no protection from the elements until her fur regrows in 4+ months. I am devastated every time I look at her. read more

I took my little boy today for the whole grooming process. We are new to the area and I was a bit nervous to leave him. Upon walking in? It was clean and well maintained. After I handled the proper paperwork (shot records etc) the groomer came out and sat down to get to know my little guy. He is always a little standoff-ish with new people. Never aggressive just nervous. But she was calm and sweet. I told her that he HATES HATES HATES his nails clipped and I had given him some puppy CBD before coming in. She assured me that they would take him back for his nails promptly so it didn't wear off. Anyway... I came back a couple hours later (they call you when your doggo is done) and he was in wonderful happy shape. The price was very em reasonable and I highly recommend them!!!! Caveat Emptor - We used this business before the current owner took, we gave them a 5 star review. We have sent five different dogs, even rescued dogs that we fostered before they went to their forever homes. In fact, we had such a good relationship with the previous owner, they wanted to use our dogs for a grooming competition. When the new current owner took over, during the first visit they hurt one of our dogs. They did not mention it to us when we picked him up, it was noticed when we got home. We took pictures and took him to his Vet. Thankfully, everything turned out fine. We quit using them, until we got a Groupon. As a strong believer in using local businesses, we thought we would do our research and give them another try. The first visit went fine, hence a second visit. When we went to pick him up, things went bad. Not wanting to get into the assorted details of what happened, we will not go back. This is what we all should expect at a minimum from a groomer or anyone we entrust our puppies to: 1) They will not hurt the dog and if an accident does happen, they report it to you when it happens. 2) They will cut the dogs hair according to the breeds standards, and if they are not able to do this, they will let you know in advance. 3) They will not be rude to you, their customers, and if it does happen they apologize. 4) They listen to you, their customers, and not yell at you when they report any of these issues. read more

So I came across this business on Groupon when I was looking for a groomer for my miniature poodle. I've gone to a couple places before and they can never cut Thomas's hair the way I'd like. THAT HAS ALL CHANGED!!!! The staff here was just amazing! Customer service was great. It's a small business but that's one of the reasons I stopped by. I like how you're able to have that one on one communication which made me feel very comfortable. I called and was able to get an appointment the very next day! The staff is very welcoming and they're so polite. I was able to drop my guy off, run a few errands and had time to relax. His haircut is soooooooooo nice I love it and he looks so cute! 4.5 stars for a solid dog grooming spot. One of the realizations my wife and I discovered when moving up to DC is it can be hard to find service providers who are both good and well-priced. This can especially be the case when it comes to dog grooming. Fortunately, as I was looking for a dog groomer recently, a Groupon add popped up on Yelp for Pretty Pets. While it was located pretty far from me on Richmond Highway over in Alexandria, the reviews were pretty solid and the $50 price tag was pretty good, so I decided to give them a try. I called to book an appointment and they were able to squeeze me in that week. The way it works is you drop off your dog in a certain time window (mine was 8-10am) and they call you to pick up the dog between when they finish to 5pm. I drove over to Alexandria and actually missed the venue since its sign was a little small and completely covered by a tree when driving north. After turning around, I entered the property, which is quite large and includes tons of parking. I'm not sure if Pretty Pets does boarding, but they sure do have plenty of space (although it would require tons of mowing) if they wanted to offer those services. I went inside, said hello to the receptionist and filled out the standard introduction form. I handed off my pup and was told he would probably be ready sometime between 2-3pm. However, to my pleasant surprise, he was done a little after noon. I drove back over to the venue to find my dog looking cute as a button with a great new haircut and smelling fantastic. As I was checking-him out, I was told that he was generally well-behaved, but that he didn't like being crated. Unlike other dog groomers, rather than leave him in the crate, they let him out and allowed him to relax on a pillow. While not a big deal, having this flexibility to go along with providing excellent service was something that I appreciated. Overall, Pretty Pets is a solid dog grooming service. While a little out of the way for us Washingtonians, the solid price and excellent work make this a great place to consider for anyone looking for dog grooming in the DMV area. read more

I will definitely be coming back with my dog Reign. The groomers were all so sweet and helpful. They accommodated to my dog which took a huge stress off my shoulders. My dog is not the easiest and can be quite wiggly so I appreciated their kindness and patience. The location is also ideal right off Richmond Hwy. Quaint little shop off Richmond Highway. They were very nice and definitely knew how to handle all the dogs/pups. I wanted his hair to be a bit longer, as the breed is supposed to have, but he turned out like a nicely cut poodle. My puppy was very calm though and was not traumatized or anything like that. We found Pretty Pets on Groupon and took our boy to his appointment today. He's a golden lab, 2YO, 65 pounds, and this was his first time at a groomers. I liked that I could arrange the appt by email and that they were very strict about seeing all his vaccines/records. I also liked that when I got there to collect him he was out among the workers and not crated. THey said he was a good boy and didn't need the crate. He smells great and feels very clean. They did a fine job with the cut but TBH compared to most breeds there isn't much to cut. They were careful to trim his toe hair, as requested. I picked him up and asked how much the same service would be without the Groupon and they said $80. I have no idea if that's a good deal since I've never taken a dog to a groomer before today but overall I would definitely consider returning. read more

This is the second time we've been to Pretty Pets and I'm extremely happy about it! I first brought Nacho when he was a puppy and we were in town. I remember it was such a great experience and he seemed comfortable with whoever was handling him. It's been seven months since then and we went back today and I'm so glad about it! The customer service is awesome! Extremely kind and you can tell they all have a passion for what they do. At first Nacho was a little afraid to go back with them, which he usually is, but didn't seem too upset about it later. When he was brought out to me, he was happy and didn't seem scared like when I took him to PetSmart. My dog struggles with being uncomfortable and sometimes aggressive with strangers. I don't know how they manage to deal with him but I truly appreciate their service and patience with him. At the beginning we were paying extra due do his behavior but overtime he's gotten comfortable with the staff and the price was reduced once he started to behave better. I also absolutely adore when holidays come because that's when they give each pet a little bandana and it's just so cute! I phoned this place after reading the previous reviews. I went this morning to drop off my dog, Boston, a cocker spaniel. I showed the owner a picture of what I wanted Boston to look like on my phone. I explained he was a FL dog and we typically shaved him short and that I liked the top of his head to keep the hair spike look. As well, she asked about what to do with the ears and I told her whatever looks good, but yes take some off. I told her he was a bit long since we had procrastinated getting him groomed since losing his last groomer. She rushed him off to a crate and asked me to call her around 1pm or 1:30pm to see where they were. I phoned at 1:10pm and she said they were working on him now and he would be ready at 1:30pm. I picked him up at 1:30pm and noticed a sign on the counter that said if paying by credit card leave the tip BEFORE they ring it up because after that they couldn't add on a tip. I tipped 10 dollars on the 70 dollar total. Then she went and got Boston, handed me his leash and went back to clipping the dog she had on the table. So here is what is wrong. They don't have a receptionist making it hard to truly discuss with the groomer what you are looking for because she has to leave her table with a dog on it to talk to you. This is probably why she was so rushed when I dropped Boston off and when I picked him up. I should have made sure she truly understood shave him SHORT not shave him OFF. My dog is shaved totally down. My bad??? You have to pay before seeing your dog. NEVER AGAIN! My dog, other than being shaved and having the ears left long had a few things that just are POOR QUALITY. His head is short on the very top, like right down the middle; yet long on the side of the head. Looks like dagwood bumstead! His ears weren't cut. They cut off his long white eyelashes. There is a ton of hair sloppily left behind between the pads on his feet. If they bathed him I am surprised because the outside of his ears still smelled dirty and his neck was dirty! It looks like a 20 minute haircut. I am very disappointed and will never go back! read more

I just picked-up our Australian Shepherd from Pretty Pets and he looks awesome! When I dropped-off our Aussie, I spoke with Judy about how I'd like his cut to look. With the warm weather approaching I wanted a short cut. But at the same time I didn't want his coat to lose the signature Aussie appearance. The cut turned out perfect. His chest, head, and shoulders all have the right shape, and they did a great job leveling the hair along his back, to his hind quarters, and down to his stomach. My dog is still young (11 months) and can become quite anxious in new environments. He can also go into super-hyper-active mode when he's not comfortable with the people he's with. I could tell when I picked him up that he was treated well and looked very happy to be around the staff. He was calm, relaxed, and looking great. We will definitely come back to Pretty Pets and would not hesitate to recommend their services to any of our friends. read more

We were about to go to visit my folks for the holidays and we really wanted the dogs to have a good proper cleaning. When called them and they were very nice on the phone and they give us the time window to drop off the dogs and they could pretty much keep them all day- it didn't really matter to us since we work from home, but it was nice that they at least offered versus other places where I only had a couple hour window when I had to pick them up at a certain time. When we brought our dogs they were very careful and had a good meet and greet phase and the current shop owner at her coworker that day were absolutely wonderful just wanting the dogs to be comfortable before they even started giving him a bath. When we pick the dogs back up we immediately noticed that there fur was a lot softer and they always had a shiny coat look on them, which was really hard b/c our dogs are rescues and they are mixed with so much-- they wore the cutest bandannas ever. I don't think I've ever seen them this clean before. The lady that took care of us went into detail on the history of her businesses, and the doggie day care place they have up the road on Richmond Highway. I could tell there was hard work put into both businesses and she was proud of them. I really like supporting small businesses and I will definitely be back to this one. read more

I feel like all all I do is review dog groomers. It's been 3 years since I've had my dog and I'm still looking for a place to call our own. I've been to other groomers as you can see and I've always defaulted back to Fermin at Petco in Baily's Crossroads. I've seen him with my dog so I know he takes care of him but I can't say that for the rest of the staff. Usually when he gets a cut, I'm not going to lie he looks kind of ugly for a week or so until it grows out a little (maybe because I don't know what I want). Anyway, I visited Pretty Pets a week ago and he saw John T. He asked me how I'd like the cut and I had no idea how to answer him but he showed me examples and I was able to tell him what I liked and what I didn't like. After he was done..my dog came out looking clean, soft, and super cute! I didn't even have to wait for his hair to grow out he already looked and smelled amazing! John did such an excellent job, he is going to be Tyler's personal groomer from now on! He's got like 8+ experience and he's really gentle with the dogs. My dog doesn't require much grooming, but his nails grow really fast and he HATES having them clipped. He doesn't just hate it he bites and puts up a big fight, so I took him into Pretty Pets to have them do it, and have been taking him there ever since. Although it requires two people and a muzzle to get the job done, Judy and her staff are always kind, gentle and quick which reduces the amount of stress both of us (me and my dog) experience during this process. A few months ago I rescued a Shih Tzu mix who does require regular grooming. Judy and Alicia do a fantastic job with him. I highly recommend pretty pets! read more

For the past few summers we went to PetsMart, but I wanted to support a local business and found Pretty Pets on Google (and come to find out, my in-laws use them for their dog, too). Pretty Pets did an amazing job grooming my two dogs. Both dogs are fluffy, furry 40-something muts, and both were in desperate need of some scrubbing, trimming, and picking. Pretty Pets did an excellent and attentive job. It was easy to set up the appointment and they did a great job communitcating through the process. Prices were reasonable, comparable to other groomers, but the quality is much better. My dogs look great and not only will they feel better in this 90-degree heat, my home will have way fewer furballs! read more

They are the best in town! I think the Vidal Sassoon of dog groomers! We've been taking our dog to Petty Pets since 2010. As a military family we've move a lot and finding a new groomer we had confidence in was a top priority. I initially selected them because I wanted a place that would take extra care in how they handled our Labradoodle. After speaking to the owner on the phone and then going to the shop to meet them in person, I was thrilled. Even more so after they groomed him the first time. The quality of the grooming is exceptional and consistent! We've never looked back, he always comes out looking amazing and happy. The staff obviously loves him and he loves them. Bought a Groupon and Living social voucher for grooming for both of our dogs. First thing what they told us was that we only can use either because it is one per household. But we could return the other one to Groupon. Since we were already there we went ahead with it. Our husky was in need for intensive brush out which we get done every 2-3 months. It is a labour intensive task. We talked to them and they seem to up to the job. After awhile we got a call that they would like shave the husky. I told them that we sometimes get her belly shaved and I am fine if they shave her belly. I did get a surprise when I picked her up. She was completely shaved and this in the winter and not recommended for huskies. She has now patches where the hair sites not grow anymore which could be due to the shave. I cannot recommend them at all. read more

I take my golden retriever mix here for a grooming every few months and each time he looks amazing when I pick him up. They do a fantastic job trimming his coat and he is always super soft and smells wonderful. You can tell they really know what they are doing and love animals. I have been coming here for years with great service and overall great groomer, but the past few times we haven't had great encounters with Pretty Pets. Sometimes you can tell they don't always take their time with grooming or cleaning up my yorkie's eye boogers which is a very sensitive spot and can tell when it is irritated. Today they called us early to bring her in a day early because of suspected snow tomorrow. We brought her in and there was only 1 other dog there. Usually she is seen right away. Hours later she was still not ready, despite being one of the first there. What was the point of them waking us up early to bring her in if they were going to have us on standby either way? Unacceptable. Also, they are not that friendly, from my experience at least. read more

We went to pretty pets about a year ago and I'm not sure why I waited so long to write this reivew.... Terrible! Honestly the worst experience! We picked our dog up and everything looked fine until my wife noticed that her inner ear was bloody and irritated. We watched her ear for a few days and after it failed to heal, we went to the vet. She needed antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. Of course this trip to the vet cost us about $150. We took pictures and got a letter from the vet basically confirming that Pretty Pets was negligent. We then called Pretty Pets and asked if we could get a refund and if they could cover our vet bill. Not only did Pretty Pets refuse to refund our money, they accused us of being bad owners and blamed us for her bloody and infected ear. Apparently we are bad owners because we had not had her ears plucked yet (she was about 8-9 months old, still a puppy). The daughter of the owner told me that under no circumstances were we to get a full refund. She told me that she was "very smart" and dared me to write a bad review, because she was "good at computers" and will have my review taken down. It literally took the threat of a lawsuit to get Pretty Pets to do the responsible thing and refund our money. Unbelievable! I can't understand how a business can operate like this! Why would a company blame a customer for their mistake. It would be analogous to a restaurant blaming a customer for getting food poisoning. After this terrible experience we went to Petsmart and bought some $200 clippers. Now, I'm grooming my own dog and you know what, I haven't injured her, cut her, infected her ears and I bet she is a lot happier then being sent to a groomer that is doing only 'god knows what' to their dogs. read more
