10 of my dogs have been trained at the OTSFD from my first Rottweiler puppy in 2000, 4 Belgian Malinois to my scared meat farm rescue, Katie who was raised for 6 months in a small cage with 2 other dogs in deplorable conditions to our shy, rescue Frankie a sharpei/lab mix and my tiny Pomeranian. From puppy school through basic obedience to advanced training for the big dogs, the training has been amazing and top notch. They also listen to my goals and hopes for my dogs and create a plan to get there. Even after school is over, they are a continuous support as the dogs exhibit new behaviors or issues. I would NEVER trust or take my dogs anywhere else. As for grooming, I've never been a little dog person until we adopted a 6 month old Pomeranian. She captured my heart and soul and as such, needed regular grooming, which was new to us since we always had wash and wear dogs :) OTSFD always did a beautiful job with and were so kind and thorough. She was always ready on time and was perfectly groomed. We had a few sever mishaps with her grooming when we were out of town on extended stays and went to a new place, which OTSFD always fixed. I always stop by for toys, treats and food when I'm in the neighborhood. They are my go-to shop for gifts for friend and clients with cats and dogs as their selection and service is great. Leighann is the BEST trainer ever! She trained our dog Rockie AKA 'Rock Star' and us, in obedience and then off leash training. Rockie is a rescue mutt, and very smart. Grooming: Took my Old English Bulldogge in to have her nails clipped which she HATES. She was fine with the staff. Not only did they clip but they filed the nails. The nail trim has lasted for a month and the nails are still so short, I won't need to take her back for a few more weeks. The best boot camp $1500+ bones can buy! Yes, I am a graduate of Alexandria's Olde Towne School For Dogs. How does one come by such an honor, you ask? At 20 weeks, I was evaluated for charm, aptitude, fluff-appeal, character, maturity, and physical fitness. (Okay, fine. It was age and vaccination records, but still they're very selective!) Once selected for a coveted slot in the school, I was assigned my instructor, Kenny Garvey, and began training the following Monday at 7:30am. For two weeks, from 7:30am until 7:00pm, I worked, I slaved, I sweat, and I excelled. I don't mean to brag, but I had the 'sit' thing down in minutes! Soon, 'down,' 'stay,' 'heel,' and 'okay' were old habits. Before the end of the week, I moved into combo's 'down-stay,' 'ready-heel,' and 'sit-okay' as if I was the trainer and he was the 'puppil.' Now here's where the brilliance of my actions came in... At home, I acted as if nothing had changed. As if the whole training thing didn't happen. And, I got away with murder. The first weekend after training, Kenny foiled my plans. He invited my parents to a parent-teacher conference. In front of them, he put me on leash and asked me to walk with him. Now what am I to do? Lose my prize student status? I think not! He says heel, I heel. I walk along next to him with my shoulders in line with his knees at all times. He stops, I stop. He turns, I pivot so as not to trip him. I look up at him as if his next words are gospel. My parents cheer wildly for me. They now know the truth and my leash-pulling days are over. Kenny lets me off leash and says, 'down-stay.' At this point, we're in the middle of Old Town Alexandria and people are whisking past me with yummy smelling things and friendly furry companions in tow (not nearly as well-behaved as I, I might add), and I sit and wait. Brad is a wonderful trainer and answers all of our questions in detail with reassurance that we can call him if we have any concerns later. Before reading "Marley & Me" I was certain I had the worst dog in the world. When Sulley was a mere 1 1/2 years old, he ate a sharp piece of a tennis ball that started to perforate his small intestine. After an emergency exploratory surgery to remove the "artifact" all was good...for another 10 weeks. That's when he cracked off the top of a raw lamb shank and swallowed the giant sucker. Once again, he pulled through surgery with a gleeful smile! But I had had enough! "You're going off to the Olde Towne School for Dogs!" Sulley was one of those bullheaded, but outrageously affectionate dogs that would only listen when there was a steak dripping with juices in front of his face. I was determined not to have to carry around my BBQ grill just to get him to heel and get in the car. So we enrolled him in the OTSD day-school program. Four days a week for three weeks, I dropped my pup off to get his butt kicked into shape by the owner and head trainer, Carlos Mejias. Carlos - AKA The Dog Whisperer of DC - is no joke. He designed the program so that each dog would get three private sessions per day and four private sessions with the owner. The benefit of its convenient location is that there is a never-ending supply of distractions. From the constant flow of other dogs in and out of the store, to the pedestrian, bus and car traffic in Old Town, the dogs learn to "ignore" like those street performers who stand still as a statue for four hours at a time. "Yeah, right!?" you say? Here's an example from day one: With Sulley a walk around the block could easily take 20+ minutes. If I was on my cell phone, everything was fair game because I was distracted. I even broke my finger once trying to hold onto his leash when he bolted to "greet" friends going into the dog park. Life was joyous! But I knew he could become the perfect dog...just as long as I wasn't in charge of his training. The first evening I picked Sulley up we were going for a short walk. From the get go he was heeling right by my side, without stopping to sniff every particle on the ground. Too good to be true? Perhaps. But then when I went to answer my cell, he immediately sat down at my side without even being given a command. It just got better from there. And I am no training genius. I am completely uncoordinated so learning how to hold and use the leash was a challenge that required a tremendous amount of patience on Carlos' behalf. He stuck with me though. The price tag is a little hefty at around $1500 for the three week day school program, but once I calculated it on an hourly basis taking into consideration all of the training time and "day-care" it looked like a bargain. I could have spent much more on multiple group training sessions and not have made a tenth of the progress we got at OTSD. My only complaint is that some of the products in the store are grossly over-priced. I bought an electric collar there and later found it for $45 less online. When I tried to return it the next day, they wouldn't let me. All students do get a 10 percent discount on products from the store though. To sign your dog up for training, you first need to schedule an interview/consultation for the trainer to be able to meet and assess the needs of your dog. They will help you select the appropriate training program. Give it a try and you will most likely feel like it is the best $1500 you've ever (or will ever, for that matter) spend on your best-friend! read more

There is no better dog obedience school than Olde Towne School for Dogs. It's truly the Cadillac of dog training. We enrolled our miniature dachshund in the 3 week program. Beforehand, our dog would jump on people, refuse to walk on a leash, and have a very short attention. Throughout the three weeks we saw our puppy improve greatly. Upon graduation, she would walk on the leash, sit when we stop walking, handle a 15 foot leash, come when called, and go to her bed and stay. All while being on the busy Old Town streets. We recommend highly Ann as a trainer. Yes, it's very expensive. But, we took her to another obedience school and got no results. It was worth it to just pay the money and get the results. The store is also great and has a wide variety of dog things. We also take our dog there to get her nails cut. They do it in 3 minutes, it's a great deal. read more

We recently had to say good bye to our amazing 16 year old Cairn Terrier. OTSFD provided professional and beautiful grooming services for him the last 7 years of his life upon our moving to Alexandria. Sandy always greeted not only me, but Gus by name even if she was coming from the back of the store. The front staff are organized and kind, and work hard to make sure that customers are attended to promptly. As his aging progressed and his vision became compromised the staff always worked the schedule to accommodate him so that he would have a expedited visit. This despite the fact that we started coming later and later in the morning because he slept in late. Once he could no longer take the stairs due to his vision they had me take the leash home to ensure that no one accidentally tried to have him walk down. Its a subtle, but thoughtful and effective way to communicate the dog's needs. After Gus died I called to cancel future appointments. The following morning I received a phone call of condolences and a sincere reflection on what a great dog he was from the owner, Sandy Mejia. She also said that she would be available to help me with finding a breeder or making a decision about what breed would be a best fit for my young family. I know that a past reviewer had a different experience, and I am sorry that they did but it is not the norm for this business. Sandy and Carlos have an excellent team and truly care for the well being of all dogs (and cats) that come through their doors. Their dog food lines are premium and their prices are in-line with other vendors in the area. While some of the accessories might be priced a little on the higher end, that is to be expected for a small boutique business with a smaller buying power compared to a box store. I prefer to support local and small businesses whenever possible to prevent my options being limited to chain stores. read more

Jennifer at the Olde Towne School for Dogs has transformed our dog and our relationship with our dog. She is nothing short of amazing. We've had our dog Maggie since 2006, when we rescued her from a high-kill shelter in West Virginia. As long as we've had her, she's had issues with other dogs-- major aggression issues-- and has growled and nipped inexplicably at certain family members and friends. She's a mutt mixture of chihuahua, dachshund, beagle and terrier (or something like that). We finally decided that avoiding her triggers and accepting that she was just going to be a terror at times wasn't an acceptable solution and contacted Olde Towne School for Dogs after finding them on Yelp. We made an appointment with Jennifer, the trainer who answered the phone when we called to ask about the school, and so began our amazing experience. I could write pages and pages about how marvelous this place is, but here are the highlights: Jennifer met with us and Maggie for a full hour to determine if Maggie would be well served by doggie school. She impressed us from the very moment we met her. She asked about things we had never even thought to mention, and we really felt she got to know us and Maggie before she decided if dog school would be right for Mags. Jennifer calls us regularly to update us on Maggie's status. This was especially true the first week, and it gave me great peace of mind to hear from her how well Maggie was doing. After just two days of training, we noticed significant differences in Maggie's behavior, especially around other dogs. She now heels automatically, sits whenever I stop walking, sits at curbs before crossing the street, and will "stay" even when other dogs walk past her. This is an incredible transformation from where she was when she started-- her "episodes" when another dog got close to her were so violent and extreme that we feared for her and other dogs' safety to the extent that we would cross the street or end walks early if we saw another dog approaching. The best part is that Maggie still has a full week of training left. The investment was significant, but so far it's worth every penny. read more

I stopped by later that day, and was in and out in under 5 minutes. Had I not been on a tight schedule, would've definitely taken time to look around and probably score more goodies for my pups! What did make an impression was the $100/hr+ training fees for obedience classes- are you kidding me??? The trainers I watched while in the store were not $100/hr quality either. My hound Huckleberry did both Puppy Kindergarten and Day School at OTSFD. (PK with Shannon, now of Capital Heel, and DS with Kathleen.) He's a dachshund who will never, ever win any obedience trials for reasons much more significant than his silly, floppy way of sitting... but Shannon and Kathleen certainly did the best with what we gave them. The staff is crazy knowledgeable and passionate about dogs. They will always take the time to help you out, even when they're so busy it feels like the backstage area of Westminster. Puppy Kindergarten got Huckleberry to walk decently on a lease, sit when you asked him *and* he felt like it, and do an adequate job of coming when called. (Keep in mind he was 4mo old.) Two years later, we returned for Day School with Kathleen. At this point, he was trained to ... um, be cute and not much else. A good, well intentioned creature, Huck hadn't been exposed to hardcore training. Kathleen took care of that and taught us how to follow through at home. He didn't lose any 'personality' - as we had worried he might - but he was solid at the following commands on a 15' lead: - sit - sit, stay - sit, down, stay - come - go to place - heel He's calmer, yet still that sweet monster we love. I also want to point out how flexible and available Kathleen was. She accommodated our schedule around the holidays and was always proactive in communicating with us. Our doggie daycare, Reserved Barking, 'taxied' Huck a few days and OTSFD made things seamless on their end. We really appreciated that and, judging from what I've seen in the store, Kathleen's behavior is very much the norm amongst the trainers. This program is *not cheap* and we certainly procrastinated signing Huck up because of that cost. However, it was worth it. There is literally no other program like this in the area - at any price. If you're lucky, your dog will be with you for a decade. OTSFD will train your dog (and you!) so that decade is one you both enjoy. read more

I'm not a dog owner or a dog lover, and I LOVE Olde Towne School for Dogs. I'm one of those crazy cat people that didn't grow up spending a lot of time around dogs, and developed a wariness about dogs. Not "fear" per say, but caution and frequent, suspicious side eye. I live a few blocks away from these trainers, and constantly see them putting their expertise on a variety of dogs - they're instantly recognizable by their skill, and I feel absolutely no wariness walking by them. I don't know a lot about dogs or dog training, but the trainers seem to focus on exposing dogs to a variety of situations and teaching them to handle all kinds of strange people in the world - hence the hanging out on random sidewalks around town. The dogs are always extremely focused and very well behaved. It's kind of amazing. I'm so glad this place exists to help train unruly dogs (and often, unruly dog owners), and make living and walking in a dog-friendly city happy for everyone - even the wary people like myself. read more

We were having a really tough time with our dog, couldn't take him on walks because he would growl, bark, and charge at other dogs and people, plus barking constantly in the house at the drop of a hat. There were a few things we decided on adding a "Bow Wow" to our family: 1) We would love him lots and spoil him rotten BUT 2) We would also make sure he's the most well-behaved and best trained doggy possible In order to achieve number 2--we set our minds on enrolling Bow Wow at the Old Towne School for Dogs in Old Towne Alexandria. My biggest regret with my first doggy Bowser (whom I miss lots and think of often--he was like a child to me!) is that we didn't take him to Old Towne School for Dogs, thinking we'd find a trainer for less and do some private lessons that way. BIG BIG MISTAKE!! In the 1.5 years that we've had Bow Wow, our 7lb Miniature Pinscher baby, we've been told by neighbors (most being elderly and usually quick to let someone know if your TV is on too loud LOL) and random people we run into at the mall, etc-- that they didn't even know we had a dog since he's so quiet, that he's adorable and not aggressive, he's the most friendly and well socialized miniature pinscher they've ever met. Much of Bow Wow's amazing persona and behavior is attributed to our trainer Kevin Gilliam at OTSFD. We started Bow Wow RIGHT AWAY in Puppy Headstart (3-One Hour Private Lessons) and then we enrolled him for the Private Lessons (6-One Hour Private Lessons where we train with Kevin in the streets of Old Towne Alexandria and get Bow Wow used to listening/obeying commands with normal distractions of cars, baby strollers, etc...) read more

We had been trying to get our mini dachshund to lie down for weeks and Anne was able to get her to do it just during our consultation. It was definitely money well spent! They even will work on specific problems. Our dog was scared of our shopping cart and would not walk near it. After her class, she was much more relaxed around it. What a fantastic little shop! I strolled in on a whim with my dog, since he needed a new collar. The selection here is really incredible, and the prices fair. They've got it all: food, natural treats, toys, supplies, leashes, etc. The friendly staff members were super helpful, fitting my dog with the size of collar that was right for him. I haven't used their training or other services, so I can't comment on those. I will say, however, that I saw a trainer working with a dog while I was there. I was impressed by how patient and kind her demeanor was while working with the dog. It was clear that she knew what she was doing. I wouldn't hesitate to bring my dogs here for anything they need. My dog, a rescue who knew nothing, was a hot mess before I brought him to Old Towne School for Dogs. He was impossible to walk on a leash, either pulling hard or cowering between our legs. After a recommendation from a neighbor (also a OTSFD customer) we paid for the private lesson package -- Six one hour lessons, one-on-one with the trainer, the dog, and ourselves ($600 if I remember correctly). Our trainer was a true professional, not a high schooler or college student who owned a Labradoodle and did this part time. And the proof was in the pudding: After the first session it was if we had a new dog. Whereas before walking on leash used to be a chore and painful, it was now suddenly enjoyable. Two years later and after continuing our training on our own with what we learned at OTSFD, we can now walk our dog off leash in many places and we get consistent compliments on how well behaved and well disciplined he is. i've got my first Golden here trained several years ago and this is by far the best training program best facility. I can't find another training program that meets the quality and outstanding service that I've gotten in the past from this school. I have a third goldn and now she's only 11 weeks but I'm looking into sending her to the Oldtown school for dogs as their reliability very good from the results I've had with my last Golden. Now here's the thing I live here in South Florida before I used to live in Alexandria Virginia. I am returning to the Oldtown school for dogs to train my third golden the reason for this is because so Florida does not have a A school as good as this yet there are some schools I've checked into and looked around but nothing as nice as well done program as the Oldtown school for dogs. I have spent all morning and about the entire two weeks looking for a place here in South Florida that has a good reliable program and none of them I have been satisfied with in fact most of them have had horrible customer service and a horrible response. I much rather spend the money and go down to the Oldtown school for dogs as I am very comfortable and positive with the results that I'm going to be getting. so if anyone from the Oldtown school for dogs is reading this I'll be seeing you guys in the few months when I'll travel to northern Virginia stay with my mother and take my golden retriever to your day program. and the reason I've chosen Oldtown school for dogs is I'm looking for a good reliable place because my future goals are to train her into a therapy dog/emotional support/agility up to AKC standard and this I'm sure I will get results with this School as I seen from the past with my first Golden. read more

On a recommendation, I brought my recently adopted, hot-mess of a maniac, Aussie cattle dog, Rusty to see one of their trainers, Mark Schneeberger. Dealing with Rusty and his sometimes-flustered dad, was not an easy task, but one Mark was more than up to. He's a true professional with a fantastic attitude and a deep understanding of dogs and what they need, and how to provide the tools to the owner for working with that dog. Rusty is now off-leash with great voice recall. We still have work to do, but now have the perfect foundation to build on. Thanks as well, to the knowledgeable, friendly staff that helped make the process smooth going! read more

Haven't used the training service, but I do go there to get the dog food. It's the only place nearby to get premium dog food. The service is friendly, and it's definitely a community store. Kind of like "Cheers", where everybody knows your name. Well, they don't know my name, since I don't go in there enough. Why do you ask? Because, I'm not willing to spend $13 for a raw-hide bone when I can go down the street and get a similar one at Target for $1.50. read more

Olde Towne School for Dogs... for Cats? Well, if you're in the shop, it's true. I don't have dogs. Way too much work for me. I have two cats that I adore and spoil. I was pleasantly surprised to walk into the store and find a pretty sizable cat section. Lots of gourmet foods, toys, and the most amazing cat tree ever (http://www.esmartcat.com/shopping/Cat_Climber.htm). My only other choice in the immediate neighborhood for cat food and supplies is Giant on First St., and it really only has food and litter. Strangely, though Petsmart and Petco are bigger, I feel like not a lot of attention is paid to the cat sections of those stores. Though smaller than the big chains, I feel like a lot of thought went into what kind of cat products they carry at the Olde Towne School for Dogs. Update: I was in the store the other day and found out they have a couple of cats living there... which explains the careful attention paid to cats! read more

THIS REVIEW IS FOR GROOMING ONLY I cannot believe there is a one year waiting list for the grooming appointments here. I brought my two poms here for a grooming excited to see what they would offer based on the reviews. I came back 4 hours later to find clean dogs, which is the only reason they have 2 instead of 1 star in this review. Everything else was disappointing. They were left entirely too long all over but especially in their undercarriage, where a traditional pom cut would have it shorter and curved. Their tails were cut too short but around the butt left too long. Within one week they were a mess. I'm sorry, but take your dogs somewhere else. I'm going back to the place I trust which is close to home and does an amazing job for much less. read more
