Last fall I had Josh from the Preuss Pets Reptile Department build me 18x18x24 Vivarium that was initially being build for Red Eye Tree Fogs. I changed my mind after finding out that Red Eyes were nocturnal. I eventually put Poison Dart Frogs in my Vivarium and I LOVE the vivarium that Josh built me. In the spring I decided I wanted a larger vivarium and worked with Josh to pick the size and the design to have it built. I ended up having a 185 gallon vivarium custom built for me. Josh did a fabulous job with it and even came to my house to complete the setup. I now have 6 Poison Dart Frogs and 1 Mourning Ghecko in the vivarium and it is beautiful. This is a fantastic pet and pet supplies store, I will never shop at any of the chains as long as I live in Lansing and Preuss' is around! The staff are extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and Mr. Preuss himself takes the time to talk to customers and give advice. I'm primarily interested in freshwater fish and plants, but their selection in pretty much any category is second to none. Where else can you buy a mantis shrimp, an actual praying mantis, a moray eel, or axolotls in the area? Absolute treat to go, and a beautiful store layout. read more

Well all I can say is you better have a deep pocket if you go here me and my wife came in to buy a fish tank setup and the kid that was helping us seemed to want to sell me all of the most expensive things they have after about 20 minutes of trying to find the best deal on a set up we decided to go to petsmart and bought the exact same setup for way cheeper they wanted around $500-$600 for the same setup and I mean the same brand and model for $370 maybe ill come back for some fish maybe read more

We love going to Preuss! My husband and I own 2 guinea pigs and a hamster. I won't buy my animals anywhere but Pruess. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and have always been very helpful. My husband's friend bought a guinea pig from a chain store. It was obvious to us that the store sold them a guinea pig that was too young to be weaned. The poor animal passed away within a month of purchasing him. Their children were devastated, to say the least. They drove all the way from the Novi area to get a guinea pig from Preuss after asking us for help. We went with them and the staff there helped them pick out a guinea pig and gave them so much information that the other pet store never told them. That's why I always recommend Preuss for those that want to buy a small animal. read more

I've been a customer of Preuss for several years and have spent several thousand dollars there and as of late the service has gotten bad and the staff hasn't been very accomidating. I'm really disappointed with the pricing now that more and more things are able to be bought elsewhere for much cheaper. Some pet stores have fish, hamsters and MAYBE a bird. This pet store has everything your heart desires (except for dogs). There are kittens, huge birds, a million kinds of fish and tons of small, furry animals. The staff knows what they're doing and they all do it well. Also great for pet food and supplies. We are into African Cichlids. This is the best pet store for all of the supplies, fish, and advice/resources that these beautiful fish require. We have fun during each trip to this store. I was a long-time African Cichlid customer here before this business changed into a cheap, off-the-truck fish store. I did not introduce any new fish into my tank for over a year, but less than two weeks after introducing some new haps from this store, my entire show tank was dead! I WILL NEVER BUY HERE AGAIN. While they will deny that they sold me diseased fish, I know that this once-trusted store has changed. No quarantine tanks are visible anymore to ensure new stock is healthy; customer service has become a joke compared to the once-knowledgable Cichlid staff under Pat's management; and the average fish are all much larger than they used to be, which suggests that they are brought in off a truck. The new freshwater manager is the least compassionate man I've ever met. He might know his fish, but he should not be tasked with caring for the customers. He ignores and avoids customers to avoid helping them. I waited 25 minutes last time I went in before anyone even said "hello." That's not right. None of the staff I talked to could even identify the most basic cichlids. I overheard an associate telling another customer that a fish (an obvious Mbuna) was a Aulonocara. If associates don't know the facts, they should not be giving out advice. It's better to say nothing at all. In conclusion, be very careful if you buy fish from this place. I would suggest a four-week home quarantine away from all other fish at your home. It is not worth losing an entire expensive show tank like I did! These fish are no longer as strong or healthy as they used to be. This review is coming from a previous customer of several years, who used to trust and talk up this store all the time. I live in Flint, and work in Detroit, but whenever I happen to be in Lansing I will be stopping here. They have tank water faucets, and I fill a jug with their labeled betta water. Mr. Press himself helped me find a laundry list of items from indian tea leaves, to frozen blood worms, and plants not requiring substrate, for my spoiled betta. He was incredibly knowledgeable, and just because I was passionate about bettas, he showed me their fishery in the back where a vet who works with him manages fish breeding. Absolutely gorgeous betta stock! When I came back front I checked the bettas for sale, and again... Gorgeous hard to find coloring. They were in CLEAN larger glass vases, not dirty plastic cups. All looked healthy, which tells me they hold themselves to a high standard of care! All the fish looked happy and healthy! I've yet to find a pet-store equal in quality or care, most likely because you can tell as soon as you walk in that this store is Preuss's passion (my fiance, from lansing says Preuss donated to the Lansing dog park). I price compared many of the items I bought, and they are averaged priced too! In fact many items cheaper than in chain stores. I highly recommend you stop in, I wish there was a store like this closer to me! For now I'll stop in every time I'm in Lansing. read more
