4 Days till Xmas !! My husband "had to brave" the Chopper for the 1 Last Time before the Big HoHoHo comes!! And, while he was DREADING IT, HE RETURNED HOME, SMILING & Joyful, STILL "wearing the Xmas Spirit" on his handsome face!!! The good is the selection.The bad is poorly trained employees. Both my wife and I have been blown off when politely trying to point out an issue, she just this afternoon. Chicken was on sale for .99/lb, down from $1.69/lb. The price listed on the label reflected the $1.69/lb. price--$8+. The cashier confirmed the system said .99, but apparently wasn't good at math, insisting the higher price was correct. A manager backed up the cashier, admitting she didn't "get how these codes work" & told my wife the $8+ was the weight, so $8+ was correct. My wife was began to suggest using the scale right there on the belt & was rudely asked, "Do you want it or not?!" She said yes, came home & left a voicemail with corporate. Another time, I received a manufacturer's coupon for a free box of tacquitos. The cashier admitted the coupon was legit but refused to honor it, telling me the full price & saying, "Take it or leave it." I left it. read more

The pros: - The selection is much better than I was expecting, especially given the name. There are a lot of produce items we cannot find at other places, which is the one thing that prevents this from being a one-star review. The cons: - Much like our experience as a lesbian couple (one of whom is trans) at the Shaw's in Lancaster, New Hampshire, this was a very starey experience. The staff member standing in front of the checkouts (shiftleader? Loss prevention?) was rotating her head like an owl to look at us each time we walked by. The clientele were just as bad. It's as if there are no LGBT people in Saint Johnsbury at all and these people think they're looking at aliens. We're just a couple of tourists stocking up on food! We're cute and nice! Honest! As we were checking out the guy whose job it was to watch the self-checkout and make sure nobody is stealing anything was slouching over practically onto the corner of our checkout, staring at us with a really disturbing intensity. As we finished up, desperate to get out of this place with minimal further interaction, he muttered 'have a good one' at us under his breath. It was clear what he thought about us. Sometimes I think my hometown is conservative and menacing to LGBT people, and then I visit places like this. I can't imagine living in this town and having to buy my groceries here. When I lived up in St Jay, this was my favorite place to buy grocery's. The "Chop Shopper" is huge! In store bakery, meat shop, seafood, rocking produce. Pretty darn good store brands too. It was so nice to be out in the wilderness one minute and the next be surrounded with food from all around the world the next. I think the bakery is one of the best in a 30 mile radius. Prices are good but not overly overpriced. 8-17-07: I am pissed at the Price Chopper Company. They now charge you an extra fee if you want cash back. I thinkis is $1.50 They also will not give you the sale prices unless you have a PC Member card. That means all tourists and other non locals must pay high prices. Okay, this Choppy is SO MUCH BETTER than the one in Barre. The Barre Choppy may be a *bit* bigger and now it is all fancy after they remodeled, but the Barre Choppy lacks the personality and spunk of the St. J Choppy. I haven't lived near St. J for almost 3 years and I can still walk in this store and know where everything is. That's a good thing! I don't know where the previous reviews came from, but they couldn't be for this store! In the six years that I've lived here, I have been made angry every time I've walked into it...for whatever reason...ranging from exorbitant prices, old produce that doesn't get marked down (ever) for quick sale, oversized fruit and veggies that have no taste, terrible bakery items, payment for everything from cash-back to a roll of quarters. If you ask them to order something that has disappeared from the shelf, you never DO see it again (!) And at the age of 62, I've been carded more times for buying alcohol than I ever was in my 20's or 30's. In truth, I only buy at this store what I can't get elsewhere, which is minimal. Why oh why didn't St. J opt for a Hannafords?!?! This town continues to befuddle me... read more

Good pricing, decent fresh produce, seafood is well maintained considering you are land-locked. Meat dept is solid, ask them to cut you what you want, very accomodating and the meat is of good quality and flavorful. Deli has what you need as well. Recently updated their coolers and that was welcomed.... Also their coupons are actually good deals.....like $4 off $65.... read more
