We were warmly greeted by Bell, who was our server for the evening. At first, I wondered if there might be a language barrier, but she quickly warmed up to us, and any concern I had disappeared. She was incredibly kind, attentive, and more than willing to answer my questions about the menu and specific ingredients. Since I have dietary restrictions, being able to ask questions and get clear answers is extremely important to me, and Bell was very accommodating. When we first walked in, there were only a couple of customers dining at separate tables, so naturally, we wondered if this was going to be a hit-or-miss experience. But about 20 minutes into our visit, people started pouring in! That's always a good sign to me. If you want to know whether a restaurant is good, watch the traffic--people either start filling the dining room or the takeout orders start rolling in. Sunset Thai definitely started getting busy! Looking over the menu, I thought the entrée prices were pretty reasonable. I did feel that some of the appetizers were a little pricey for the portions, though. For example, I couldn't see myself paying $11.95 for five wings or $9.95 for cheese wontons, so we decided to skip the appetizers. That said, I completely understand that every restaurant has its own pricing. I did order 2 Thai tea, which was around $6, and it was really good! It paired perfectly with my meal. For dinner, we ordered two chicken Pad See Ew entrées, one chicken Drunken Noodle, and one beef Drunken Noodle our total for the entrees and two tea totaled about $ 82 and some change. Our food came out in about 15-20 minutes, and when I tell you it was piping hot, it was HOT! I'll be honest--I was nervous about the noodles because our last few Thai restaurant experiences haven't been great. But Sunset Thai completely surprised me. The vegetables were perfectly cooked with just the right amount of bite, the noodles were cooked to perfection, and the chicken was juicy and flavorful. Everything was fresh, hot, and delicious. We ordered everything at a level 2 spice, which gave us a nice amount of flavor without being overwhelming. They also brought spicy chili oil to the table, which I absolutely loved because I could adjust the heat to my own preference. The combination of my entrée and Thai tea was fantastic! One thing I really appreciated was how fresh everything tasted. You could tell the food was made to order. It came out so hot that even after we finished eating and our plates were removed, the table was still warm from the food being placed there. That's how you know your meal came out fresh! Bell continued checking on us throughout our visit, asking if we needed anything. I only had to call her over once for a refill for my son's drink, and she was right there to take care of it--even as more customers started coming through the door. The rest of the staff working alongside Bell were also friendly and welcoming. They checked in to see how we were enjoying our meal, and I always appreciate that. It speaks volumes when the entire team seems genuinely interested in the customer's experience. I also really enjoyed the atmosphere. The interior has a beautiful Asian-inspired aesthetic with what reminded me of Japanese cherry blossom décor. Everything was well-lit, organized, and thoughtfully put together. There's also patio seating and plenty of tables, making this a place that could comfortably accommodate couples, small groups, medium-sized parties, and even larger groups if tables were pushed together. And the outside décor deserves some love too! In the evening, the soft string lighting creates a really nice atmosphere that could make this a cute spot for a more intimate date night. I noticed the restaurant mentions new management, so I can't speak to what the experience was like before. But based on my experience, I can definitely say that Sunset Thai is a keeper in my book! My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal, and I would absolutely come back. If you're ever in Ocean Beach and looking for Thai food, give Sunset Thai a try! I don't hand out five stars easily. For me, the food, service, cleanliness, atmosphere, and overall experience all have to come together--and this place checked the boxes across the board So you can thank me later when you see exactly what I mean. Founded by chef/owner Khwanta Osanai who learned how to cook at age seven, she previously owned a Thai eatery in Chula Vista. With a purposefully-crafted menu made up of authentic dishes and street food from her native Northern Thailand, everything is made from scratch and fresh ingredients. Rather than a numbered scale for spiciness as many Thai eateries, each dish is spiced as it would be traditionally. I loved Thai food, so would this place on Soi 30th hit the spot and bring me back for more!? PURCHASE(S) Thai Iced Tea 16floz Cup ($5.95): Sadly, no boba, but this was a refreshing drink (not too sweet) while I waited for my food to be ready. Crispy Tofu ($9.95): Although these always reminded me of that facial sponge women use to apply makeup on their face and around the eyes, these crispy fat spongy triangle pieces were tasty and were made even better with the crushed nuts and spicy sweet dipping sauce. Hot Spicy Basil Extra Spicy + Fish ($14.95 + $4.00): Sauteed with holy basil, Thai chilis, onions, green peppers, garlic, and purportedly served over rice and a fried egg (these items didn't come with it), this was a decent portion size with an insane spice level ( wasn't right for a couple of days, if you knew what I meant!), big tender fish pieces, and the various fresh crispy vegetables. Plenty of natural lighting entered through the front wall windows and doors while a mix of recessed and various hung electric ceiling lights covered the rest. I believed there was at least one TV behind the order counter while classic rock & roll music played in the background. ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL I really enjoyed my first Thai food experience in the North Park neighborhood at Soi 30th. Yes, the spices tore me up, but the food was still very tasty, the prices were comparable, the portion sizes were generally very good, the atmosphere was more clean and modern than I would've liked, and the service was straightforward and efficient. I felt the only drawback was the limited menu (I was so used to pages of options at other places). And, I always loved to support local small mom & pop businesses.
