Where do I start?! The food is AMAZING--definitely a 5 out of 5! The portion sizes for dining in were more than enough, and you definitely get your money's worth. Our waitress, Bell, was incredibly helpful, friendly, and professional. She made the experience even better! The restaurant is located right across from the old Rite Aid, which means there's plenty of parking, and the Sunset Cliffs area makes for a great location. I stopped by Sunset Thai in Ocean Beach with my family on Sunday evening around 6:30 PM, and I have to say, we had a really great experience! We were warmly greeted by Bell, who was our server for the evening. At first, I wondered if there might be a language barrier, but she quickly warmed up to us, and any concern I had disappeared. She was incredibly kind, attentive, and more than willing to answer my questions about the menu and specific ingredients. Since I have dietary restrictions, being able to ask questions and get clear answers is extremely important to me, and Bell was very accommodating. When we first walked in, there were only a couple of customers dining at separate tables, so naturally, we wondered if this was going to be a hit-or-miss experience. But about 20 minutes into our visit, people started pouring in! That's always a good sign to me. If you want to know whether a restaurant is good, watch the traffic--people either start filling the dining room or the takeout orders start rolling in. Sunset Thai definitely started getting busy! Looking over the menu, I thought the entrée prices were pretty reasonable. I did feel that some of the appetizers were a little pricey for the portions, though. For example, I couldn't see myself paying $11.95 for five wings or $9.95 for cheese wontons, so we decided to skip the appetizers. That said, I completely understand that every restaurant has its own pricing. I did order 2 Thai tea, which was around $6, and it was really good! It paired perfectly with my meal. For dinner, we ordered two chicken Pad See Ew entrées, one chicken Drunken Noodle, and one beef Drunken Noodle our total for the entrees and two tea totaled about $ 82 and some change. Our food came out in about 15-20 minutes, and when I tell you it was piping hot, it was HOT! I'll be honest--I was nervous about the noodles because our last few Thai restaurant experiences haven't been great. But Sunset Thai completely surprised me. The vegetables were perfectly cooked with just the right amount of bite, the noodles were cooked to perfection, and the chicken was juicy and flavorful. Everything was fresh, hot, and delicious. We ordered everything at a level 2 spice, which gave us a nice amount of flavor without being overwhelming. They also brought spicy chili oil to the table, which I absolutely loved because I could adjust the heat to my own preference. The combination of my entrée and Thai tea was fantastic! One thing I really appreciated was how fresh everything tasted. You could tell the food was made to order. It came out so hot that even after we finished eating and our plates were removed, the table was still warm from the food being placed there. That's how you know your meal came out fresh! Bell continued checking on us throughout our visit, asking if we needed anything. I only had to call her over once for a refill for my son's drink, and she was right there to take care of it--even as more customers started coming through the door. The rest of the staff working alongside Bell were also friendly and welcoming. They checked in to see how we were enjoying our meal, and I always appreciate that. It speaks volumes when the entire team seems genuinely interested in the customer's experience. I also really enjoyed the atmosphere. The interior has a beautiful Asian-inspired aesthetic with what reminded me of Japanese cherry blossom décor. Everything was well-lit, organized, and thoughtfully put together. There's also patio seating and plenty of tables, making this a place that could comfortably accommodate couples, small groups, medium-sized parties, and even larger groups if tables were pushed together. And the outside décor deserves some love too! In the evening, the soft string lighting creates a really nice atmosphere that could make this a cute spot for a more intimate date night. I noticed the restaurant mentions new management, so I can't speak to what the experience was like before. But based on my experience, I can definitely say that Sunset Thai is a keeper in my book! My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal, and I would absolutely come back. If you're ever in Ocean Beach and looking for Thai food, give Sunset Thai a try! I don't hand out five stars easily. For me, the food, service, cleanliness, atmosphere, and overall experience all have to come together--and this place checked the boxes across the board So you can thank me later when you see exactly what I mean. New ownership has taken over this OB space and rebranded the restaurant's name to Sunset Thai. It's tough to find open curbside spots in this beach community so what I really liked was the dedicated parking lot behind the building serving all of those businesses. Some minor modifications were made to the interior decor, but the layout remained the same. There was booth seating to the left, a few small tables in the middle, and countertop seating with more tables along the windows to the right in the dining room. I sat at a countertop seat, and the place got quite busy during my visit with almost a full house on a weeknight. Authentic Thai street food was the tagline on the sign above the main entrance. Well over 50 items were available on the two-sided menu including some Vietnamese fare like pho. A weekday lunch special section was on the bottom of one page. I started my meal with a small cup of Seafood Soup. The item had a hot and sour base (Tom Yum) made up of lemongrass broth, mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, cilantro, chili, and lime juice. Pieces of shrimp, calamari, whitefish, and mussel were included although the amount was minimal for the price. The sour flavor was prominent so much so that I couldn't finish drinking all of the liquid. I also ordered the Crab Fried Rice as a main dish. Fresh crab meat was stir fried with egg, onions, peas, carrots, and a special house sauce. Three cucumber slices were served on the edge of the plate. The rice was light and fluffy while the crab meat was generously applied. This entree was executed much better than the soup. I gave a four star rating for my dining experience at Sunset Thai. read more

This location was Social Thai previously but now Sunset Thai has replaced them and the vibe is raised! This week until June 25th for their soft opening all entrees are only $9.99!! It's so generous of them to do this! The menu is two sided with appetizers, entrees and sides! Tonight I had the seafood combo stir fry with shrimp, mussels, fish and calamari with eggplant and vegetables with house sauce. The portion was generous and perfectly executed. So much flavor and I could not finish it all. Jasmine rice was the perfect side with three Thai chili sauces! They offer sake and beer which is extra and the best beverages for the meals. Free parking on the street and behind the building. After dinner take a stroll to the beach nearby and catch the sunset! Overall, I enjoyed the food. The tom kha chicken was particularly good. The pad Thai with tofu was solid, but not a stand out per se. They seem a bit short staffed so it was hard for them to keep up on a Friday night. Staff was friendly and doing their best though for sure. If I was in the area again, I might return. I wouldn't go out of my way for it largely because there is Thai food closer to me. Worth a try if in the neighborhood. Food quality is noteworthy. Oh man we have a real winner here. Excellent in every way. Overdue to write a good review lol, and couldn't be happier that this excellent new Thai place has opened. Still in its soft opening week, serving a full and comprehensive menu. Four of us had an excellent meal last night! Prices are reasonable, meats and veggies fresh and they know how to get the spice level correct. We ordered the Hawaiian Fried Rice (great for sharing!) One of the best we've ever had. The Cashew Nut Chicken is also excellent, my go-to, slightly lighter sauce than I've experienced but after a few bites realized it's much better and less syrupy than I'm used to. The vegetables.. wow, so fresh, sligjhtly al dente, really wonderful. The chicken itself doesn't melt in your mouth and this is a good thing, many Asian restaurants "velvet" their chicken by coating it in baking soda, etc, makes it softer and mushier. Not here, delicious, flavorful real chicken! Spouse loved the Hot Basil with pork belly, tender meat and great basil flavor. Spice level here is 1-10, get this one at lease 4-5! Niece had the Orange Chicken, light batter, not oily and very satisfying. Wonderful service here, too, all smiles!
