Food: 5 stars. I have 4 stars due to the slow service. It was a pretty busy Friday night but we were seated immediately. No one came to bring us water/silverware or anything for over 20 minutes. One of the guests who sat at a table nearby noticed and told their server to help us. If it weren't for that kind patron we may never have been helped! Once we were assigned a waiter the rest of service was fast. The meatballs were very delicious and the complimentary bread and butter was a really nice touch! We had dinner at Prinsen a last week when we were in Stockholm for a few days. We started with the Sillbricka (an appetizer platter of 5 types of herring, cheese, potatoes, and bread). I had a Swedish classic - Swedish meatballs in cream sauce, lingonberries, pickled cucumber, and potato puree, while my husband enjoyed a lamb dish. Their menu has classic Swedish dishes as well some French inspired plates. The restaurant is beautiful and comfortable, French bistro vibes. If you want one quintessential Swedish meal, this is the place to go. Be sure to get reservations, because trying to just walk in is very chancy. the place is buzzing and very popular. The decor and vibe is really fun, and definitely embodies its city and country, which as a tourist, is what I'm looking for. Even better, it was packed with locals. I had the salmon plate (basically like lox), which were fantastic. Hubs had the meatballs, which were also fantastic. Highly recommend. read more

Was looking for the best Swedish Meatballs and Prinsen was suggested. Was. Not. Wrong. First tip, make a reservation. Even if any app you have says it's "not busy". It most certainly was busy. We were at least told there would be space in about an hour, so just walked around a while and came back. It was worth the hour wait. 3 out of 4 of us had the aforementioned Meatballs and we all were so satisfied. The other non-meatball lover had a mushroom dumpling, which was also pretty tasty. Our waiter was fantastic and absolutely delightful. They certainly don't rush you at all here. If I am ever in Stockholm again, I will come back to Prinsen on the double! read more

My friend told me to go here if I wanted a traditional Swedish dinner in a nice environment. It ended up being exactly just that. I absolutely loved my meatballs, and really liked what my friend ordered as well (in my photos), as well as the wine pairings the servers recommended. I feel like it was a bit pricey in my opinion, but it's also Scandinavia so it's sort of expected. The servers themselves weren't the most friendly or outgoing, but they still took good care of us. I left the place still feeling like I wanted maybe one more small appetizer or something, since I was still slightly hungry, but I didn't end up doing it. There are many traditional Swedish offerings like this around Stockholm but this is certainly a solid place to try. read more

We had a wonderful experience at Prinsen. It actually started with the reservation process when I reached out by e mail and received prompt, friendly responses. We were a group of 7 celebrating my Husband's 70th birthday. Our table was perfect. Service was excellent. The food was enjoyed by all. We started with shared plates of Toast Skagen and the pickled herring sampler. Everyone in our party selected either the arctic char or the venison, and were very pleased with their meals, as well as the wine selection. The meatballs were very tender and flavorful, the beef was perfectly cooked and paired well with the onions and potatoes, and the scallops were light and the perfect starter. A friend recommended I go for the best wallenbergare in town... and I did. I ordered the fixed lunch as below, toast skagen which was excellent, wallenbergare and a chocolate truffle which I never received lol. Also had a thimble size glass of champagne for 180k. I would skip any wine or bubbly here and stick to beer. I want to give the place 5 stars but the missed truffle and the outrageous bubbly will only allow 4 stars, but I would definitely recommend the quality classic food here. I experienced maybe racism or microaggression while having dinner at the Prinsen on December 28, 2024. I am still confused about this experience. I am a brown woman and noted that I am a tourist and requested to order in English or be given a few minutes to use google translate to order. The waiter (an older male) gave me a very dirty look, did not take my order and complained about having to speak English. Thankfully, the people that I was dining with could speak Swedish and ordered for me for the rest of the evening. As we were finishing up the first course the same waiter came to me again and said something in Swedish and picked up my plate while I was eating before I could even say anything. He also referred to others I was dining with as monsieur/madame but did not even address me. This was very unexpected and unpleasant and made me wonder if I would get the same treatment if I was not a woman of color. read more

Excellent meal at Prinsen for myself and my family of five. I had the Biff Rydberg as did my younger son. My wife had the Prinsen Grona, which we knew from an aunt's Swedish cooking at home in Minnesota. Sort of a potato dumpling with meat (or in this case mushrooms) inside. My older son had the salmon cake, and my daughter had Swedish meatballs. The biff rydberg was excellent, but be sure ask the waiter for instructions on how to mix the food and the sauce they provide. Food: 4/5 STARTER: selection of herrings - if you like herring (like the Dutch), you will enjoy this. It came pickled and also with a salad. I personally do not like herring, but my Dutch counterpart found it to be very tasty. FYI - the starters are TINY MAIN: meatballs with lingon berries - this was very tasty and a significant upgrade from those IKEA meatballs. they were small and flavorful, the sauce was not overly salty and went very well with the meatballs. the mashed potatoes were perfectly smooth and creamy. DESSERT: creme brulee - this was a very good classically done creme brulee. nothing super special but done well Service: 2/5 The service in Sweden is terrible (and I've spent a fair amount of time in Europe already). The waitstaff is downright rude to you whenever you ask for anything or even order. On the contrast, the coat staff was very nice and even offered sight-seeing recommendations. Atmosphere: 5/5 You can feel the history in the building. It used to be a beer hall and it has a very rustic and cosy feeling to it. The clientele was dressed very nicely and it had a very nice buzz to it. Great place to take someone who needs to be impressed. Value: 3/5 It came out to about 300kr/person. We brought a toddler here for an early dinner to avoid the dinner rush on a Friday night. The restaurant was pretty empty at the time we came. From the start, we knew our waitress was not a fan of ours. Maybe it's cuz we were tourists? Maybe cuz we had a toddler? Whatever it was, the service was very tepid at best. One of the best experiences of our two week swing through Scandinavia. Our reservation was handled professionally, and we were well attended by a captain and our waiter, Tony. But for their efforts, I would not know to seek out Bjorn Borg underwear. We selected two bottles, a Gruner Veltliner and a Gigondas, and both hit the spot. I started with the Taste of Sweden appetizer. While delicious this may not be your best option if you've been enjoying hotel buffet breakfasts with similar fish offerings, The Vasterbottom cheese added something new for me, and the generous portion allowed tastes. Others in our group enjoyed the asparagus soup with quali egg. The loin of lamb was very tender, and even the fat was delicious. It was accompanied by a nice portion of potato gratin (which could have been crisper). The pan fried perch won good reviews, as did the meatballs. So. 12 hours aboard the Dreamliner is quite nice except Norwegian Air charges you for a every little thing and $4 for a cup of Lipton is a blasphemy. Upon arrival, I walked and walked and walked until I stumbled upon this great Swedish-French restaurant with fantastic old-school (attentive) waiters and delicious hearty food. Traditional shrimp toast was divine; I'm never ever having that horrendous Ikea version again... Main course consisted of three simple European staples: juicy beef, onions and fried potatoes (pictured). I managed to devour an extremely tasty desert (rhubarb + mascarpone n sorbet) and barely had any strength left to walk back to the hotel. Oh, don't stuff yourself on bread. Just had a very good lunch in Prinsen. I wanted a Swedish lunch, so my two Swedish guests suggested WALLENBERGARE ORIGINAL, it was very good, very moist veal, lovely flavor. My companions ordered the grilled Char and the pan fried Seabass. They both seemed very happy with their lunches. Nice coffee rounded off a fine lunch. Excellent service. Prinsen restaurant is centrally located, a couple of blocks from the main train station, in posh Ostermalm district (e.g. one block from a Louis Vuitton store). It has a nice traditional upscale bistro/brasserie decor, with old polished dark wood and white cloth (no red-and-white plastic checker here!). Nice relaxed quiet atmosphere indoor (at least on a Sunday evening). Service was truly excellent. They went out of their way to accommodate all our requests. Wine and bread were good (not excellent). We had the equivalent of the "shrimp cocktail" appetizer, which includes a small mountain of tiny shrimps that you have to un-shell yourself, with a really nice saffron aioli dip, and (overly) buttery toasts. Overall, very good if you don't mind the required handwork. And generous portion: this is great to share. Then we had the "seafood burger", which was more of a light breaded fish cake. As long as you don't care that it's not a burger, this was actually a nice dish. It was supposed to be served with spinach but they brought boiled potatoes instead (don't know why), which were good. Desperate for lunch at 3pm on a Sunday, our choices were limited, more so by the desire to keep to a Swedish theme. We debated about trying our luck here and went in with a sinking feeling. The tablecloths and faded waitstaff with faded white jackets further compounded our sense of foreboding. However, when it came, the food was much better than anticipated. My calves liver with bacon and mashed potatoes was one of the best I've eaten, and our grilled octopus starter was fantastic. We were specifically sent to try the Köttbullar (meatballs) so we didn't venture into the other delicious sounding menu options, but after this experience we certainly will return. The waitstaff was very welcoming to us and so friendly. I noticed that half of the diners were dressed up and the other half very casual, so come as you are. The stacked bread was quirky but good. The meatballs were really as good as people had suggested. Perfect portion, flavorful gravy, and wonderfully seasoned meatballs. Yum! read more

My wife and I shared two entrees. Swedish meatballs with mashed potatoes, pickled cucumbers, and lingenberry sauce. The second dish was seared arctic char with mushroom topping and cauliflower puree. Both entrees were prepared perfectly and were very delectable. For the first time in Sweden we had meals that were not overly salted. This chef got it right. The food portions were reasonable as were the prices. The ambience is old world with warm colors, dark paneling, and leather seats and benches which is not surprising since the restaurant is about 125 years old. Although service was slow to start it improved over time. This is a Saturday night and the restaurant is completely booked. It is always advisable to make a reservation in advance. Considering how crowded it is tonight, the noise level is not bad which is probably due to the fact that no music is playing in the background. This place is a real winner and worthy of a return visit. read more
