My wife and I have gone to Neil for years. The business used to be named Bay Wide Tax Service (Neil came around in 2020). Marla, the woman who did our taxes, retired (her husband wanted her to because he had retired the previous year), and Neil took over the business. I would have given 4 stars during the first year (2021). I just did okay, and I felt bad when a box that was on top of the arcade game fell down. Neil just shrugged it off, though (the box was probably empty). The arcade games might only be on some of the time, but the ambiance is pretty cool (The Little Mermaid, the 2023 version, was on when we went here this year). The hours aren't as limited as they seem. Neil works on Saturdays to some extent. The location changed in 2023 (the building is old, but easy to get to, and the office is right next to the main flight of stairs). The parking lot is somewhat small, but a big improvement (finding parking at the old location was usually an ordeal). Because of inflation, "starting with the 2022 tax season, we will be implementing a 10-20% fee adjustment - depending on the complexity of your tax accounting." We were charged $260 this time, but the amount will be a lot less for many people (my mom was charged $180). An Audit Protection service was added for free at the time the prices went up. The receptionist is new, and she's cute and friendly. 100% honest here. My wife went to Neil 3 years in a row since moving to Fremont. Each time we saw him we found him to be progressively less and less... friendly and welcoming? The first visit wasn't bad actually, and it's obvious that he knows his stuff, so based on that visit alone I would've given a solid 4 stars. But this last time (3rd time) seeing him we found him to be grouchy, cold, and dismissive - answering our questions like they were stupid, like, 'why on earth are you asking such a stupid question?' kind of a vibe. My wife and I are very young so we're still learning how to "adult", and maybe he was having a bad day -- but yeah it was an overall unpleasant experience and Neil is certainly not a warm and fuzzy person. Great find as this is somewhat in my hood. My previous tax guy from the past few years for some reason, did not respond to my email or text at the start of this year's tax season. He eventually did after a week's time (annoying as hell), but I actively looked for an alternative within that time. Glad I did cuz my experience here with Neil was exactly what I look for in this service, fast and easy. And it is only a 5 minute drive from home, so extra bonus. My filings are not complicated at all. I even collect tax documents in a folder as they arrive, so as I turn things in, there are no questions or having to retrieve info/documents. I know it sounds like something I can do myself with today's programs, but I just prefer someone who does it professionally to take care of it, as there is just more piece of mind, and they are more versed on current rules/laws/deductions. Kinda like getting my oil changed or getting fried chicken, I just prefer to get it done for me, otherwise an unnecessary mess can end up on my end. Loved how they responded to my original email within a few hours. Loved how setting up an appointment was super easy and loved it even more when they honored said appointment. (Tax guys are notorious for being behind schedule). Once seated I handed over my folder, Neil did his thing super efficiently, showed me everything on his large screen monitor and boom I was signing and dating. I wasn't even in there for 20 minutes. I do not like leaving bad reviews for small businesses and despite leaving Neil several messages giving him a chance to pay us back he does not return communication of any kind. So first he doesn't return messages. It took him three weeks to respond to our first phone call and then that was by email. That was our first red flag and we should have taken it like the red flag it was and went somewhere else. Let me clarify by saying he was referred to us by our previous CPA who moved out of state and could no longer do our taxes. She is aware of what kind of person she referred us to and we miss her very much. Second he is lazy doing taxes. He told us he doesn't itemize certain deductions therefore costing us more in taxes. We wound up owing $30k between federal and state. And I was supposed to pay that in four months. He is one step above H&R Block in taxes. He is awful. Third he actually FORGOT to file our state taxes and the only reason he remembered (9 months late) is because my husband called him to get copies of some documents. And whatdya know. The following Monday I get a multi thousand dollar late fee complete with daily compounding interest in the mail demanding immediate payment. Do you think he answered our calls?? Hardly. I had to file a complaint against his license to the California Board of accountancy as well as the California Department of Consumer Affairs. I have not decided if I'm going to take him to small claims court yet. This guy is a menace. Seriously. Go to him at your own risk. It's been horrible dealing with him. A bad tax person can ruin your life. It's been a nightmare dealing with Neil. I still cannot believe what he has done and he just doesn't care. Could not care less read more

Used to love having Neil do our taxes until this year. We moved out of state and it took him over one week to complete our taxes. It normal takes him an hour in the office but since I'm now out of state I guess that means you can take a week plus to complete my taxes. All good. What really bothers me is the amount he tells me I owe on CA was completely wrong and the refund from the IRS was over $7,000 off. That's a big mistake. His response was "I must have used a template when emailing you the amounts." This is the most unprofessional accountant I've come across and will not be trusting him to handle my taxes ever again. My brother and I went to Neil to do our taxes for the first time this year. He was a bit more affordable than who I was going to before, but I quickly found out why. I chose him based on his yelp reviews (not sure if he's bribing people to write these 5 star reviews) and he seemed nice when I initially met him. We have a slightly more complex tax situation than people who don't own real estate because of our mother's estate but not even complex compared to many people with several investments. He initially sent me an email about two weeks after I met with him stating I owed over 10k in taxes which I KNEW was wrong instantly. He then quickly blamed it on his "assistant" whom I have never once seen or spoken with over the phone or in his office. I don't believe he truly has one...isn't he the tax professional that should be crunching the numbers and making sure things look right? Fast forward to my brother's taxes. He now tells my brother he owes about 12k in taxes which I also knew was WRONG. When we questioned him, he said "let me look into it". A few days goes by and I hear nothing, so I take it upon myself to reach out to a family member for help since this is not my area of expertise, HENCE why I hired Neil. Also, this is in June after tax season had ended so I hardly believe Neil was swamped. After spending some time, we found that Neil depreciated the land on the ONE rental property we own instead of the property. He then blamed it on his assistant, again. The invisible assistant who doesn't even have a desk in the office from what I saw. I had to spend a couple hours figuring out a mistake that I paid a tax professional to do for me. I feel like he didn't even look everything over before he gave us the numbers, as he messed up twice. And the worse part is, when I explained this and asked him to lower our tax prep fees, he shaved off a lousy 20 dollars each. I wanted to laugh in his face but I played it cool. I will be going back to my previous tax accountant who is a bit more expensive, but also 100% reliable as my family has been going to him for 15 years. Long story short, don't try to cut cost on tax prep fees. It could end up costing you more money if you go to someone who is incompetent or just careless without paying attention to detail. PS: I ended up getting a refund instead of owing 10k. So at least that was my happy ending to a horrible experience that could have been avoided if I went to a competent tax guy. read more
