People wielding chainsaws should never begin a job until the owner gives final approval on what is being cut. I requested to be home before the work began, was given a time window, and returned home before that window. But the job, and damage, had been done. I had spoken with the arborist two months prior, and had changed my mind on a cut, and had specific instructions for another. I emailed the business to this effect, and left a voice message. Yet they went ahead without me being home. I will never understand why irreparable change should not have a final confirmation and sign off?? Consequently, three trees on our property were cut the way that the company wanted to do it, based on a conversation months before though our desires had changed. The arborist spoke with me on the phone that day, did his best to apologize and try to make it right by not charging us. He said he would come to the site and talk to me, which did not happen. My advice to tree services: get a final signature before carving up precious trees. You can not put them back together. read more

We have a 3/4 acre garden of mostly trees (conifers & deciduous, a lot of Japanese maples, etc.) and shrubs, some perennials, almost no annuals. Over the years we've used several of the big name tree services. Some have been okay, but responsiveness has generally been only so-so. The one we had at the end of the previous year just sort of petered out. (The rep ended up leaving the company.) We checked online reviews for a new firm and found one that seemed worth giving a try, Progressive Tree Service based in Evanston. From the first visit of their rep (David Conrad) we were pretty sure we'd found the right company. After quickly getting us a very reasonably priced proposal for insect care and fertilization and another for some pruning, we signed up. A few days later a technician knocked on the door to let us know he was there to start insect care. A few days after that two showed up to do fertilization work. Then I started wondering when they planned to start the pruning. The day I thought to call them about it, they called me! That was a first. Usually I have had to call a company once (or twice or three times). We scheduled a mutually convenient time for them to come a few days later. Once again first there was a knock at the door (at the agreed upon time). It's been our experience that so many landscape related workers just show up and go to work without letting us know they've arrived. David was there with a crew and the first thing he asked was whether I cared to walk the property with him and his crew to make sure they were clear about what needed to be done. I even had a chance to ask for a few more small tasks to be handled. It was clear the crew chief and his men knew what they were doing. To top it off they were all pleasant to deal with. When they finished, did they just take off? No! They knocked on the door and asked us to walk around with them to be sure the work was satisfactory. (It certainly was!) Even though I always seek 3 quotes before confirming a project, Progressive always provides a great deal. Their work is top-notch. I can't believe how fast they work and how clean they leave the job. The 3 services I had them do were: 2021: Removal of dying crabapple tree 2023: Removal of all shrubs in the front and sides of our property 2024: Removal of all shrubs in the sides of our property in preparation for a fence. Our Highland Park home experienced tornado winds that unfortunately brought our 100 year old 90ft tall Spruce tree down. Devastating to say the least. The uproot was almost as tall as our house. Consulted with multiple major tree service companies. Due to the of the root/tree being so close to our home the concern was once cut, the root could sit, smack and destroy our home. 3 major companies declined the job due to the possible liabilities. Some mentioned they have never seen anything like this in the careers. I appreciate their honesty, time and inputs, however still had this massive root, tree in neighboring driveway and yard. I met with Diego Martinez with Progressive Tree Services. Him and his team had a totally different approach and analysis of how to tackle this massive job. They worked non stop for 6 hours slowly and carefully dissecting this behemoth. Prior to starting they even consoled with local police to assist with traffic while setting up their crane, chipper and heavy duty equipment. Being turned down by bigger companies I was honestly a-little nervous. Diego walked us thru it step by step and after watching the work being performed I was at ease almost instantly. This crew is just amazing. I cannot recommend the company enough. They made a giant tree magically disappear, including grinding down any sign of it in my yard while at the same time protecting my cute little flowers that were near the tree. Well the first time I used they were very good. reasonably priced, arrived on on time, cleaned up. they gave me a quote for different tree in July ? which I accepted. despite calls, emails etc with their patient and friendly I have heard nothing. I accepted the contract so am stuck. but no word since then.. I even asked if they had just changed their minds. not a peep. so despite having praised them on Facebook gardening groups I am going to have to withdraw my praise. read more

Progressive Tree Service took down a huge silver maple in our yard and also trimmed a large mulberry tree for us. The maple had to be done by hand because of the location and it was massive. It took quite a while to schedule, and was complicated by needing to turn off power to neighbors, etc., but wow - they did an incredible job! They worked so well with ComEd, were friendly, and worked hard. Our neighbors could not believe how perfect the space was when they left - cleaned everything and did it all in a short period of time. "I think that I shall never see, a poem lovely as a tree" is what Joyce Kilmer wrote in her poem Trees. I don't disagree, but what Kilmer leaves out is how expensive it is to own trees. We learned early on to budget for annual tree maintenance. In the past we've used The Care of Trees and overall were quite happy until last year when getting a quote and getting on the schedule was a major headache. This year, I got quotes from a few places, hoping to avoid the hassle. Progressive started out strong, they reached out right away and came out for a quote. We choose Progressive because they were a little cheaper than the other place we quoted. The man who came out said he'd follow up with a proposal and I could choose the services I wanted. Sounded great. After waiting several days for the proposal, I emailed and heard nothing. A few days later, same thing. I called and left a message and finally got my proposal. I accepted the proposal and waited. Almost a week later, I emailed to inquire about getting on the schedule and heard nothing, so I called this past Monday getting through to an actual person (this seems to work the best versus emails and messages). They put us on the schedule for Thursday at 8am; I was off work, but was happy to skip sleeping in to get the trees taken care of, especially the one blocking part of our walkway. I was ready for them at 8, but they were nowhere to be seen, strange since we were probably the first job of the day. At 9:30 I called the office who said they'd look into it. Around 10:15 they showed up and got to work. The trees look great, but I'm not sure we'll be repeat customers. From the time they came out to quote until the work actually got done was close to a month with lots of nagging to move the process along. I would be happy to pay a few more bucks for less hassle. read more

Updating my review: Diego called me and apologized for the mess/damage they caused. He was extremely apologetic and explained that they had every intention of cleaning up the deck before they left but in the midst of everything going on (there was a moving crew here for a tenant in the building) it got forgotten. He sounded sincere and offered to pick up new plants for me. I was reimbursed by my neighbor. Again, he was extremely apologetic and appreciated the phone call/offer. They have given me a head's up on their next work day so I can be prepared which was much appreciated. I am bumping this rating up b/c despite my frustration initially - the followed up with good customer service. My neighbors had this company come out to remove a tree and it required them to be on our condo property. The men knocked over the plants on my deck, broke a pot, ruined two of my plants and made a huge mess. They also came into my deck and moved all my stuff around. The kicker of this is that I was home and would have been happy to remove my plants if they had only asked me versus coming on to my private property and doing what they pleased. To add insult to injury, they took the plant from the pot they broke and threw it into an empty pot I had on my deck as if I would not notice. I am livid. This is NOT ok. They may be good at tree removal but the blatant disregard for people's property and belongings is trash. read more

We just had them take down a spruce tree that was dying and prune a silver maple that really needed it. When they said "11 to 2" I thought that was the projected arrival time, but I was wrong. They started at 11 and by 2 pm, both jobs were done and the whole yard was cleaned up. Buyer beware - Dishonest business. I purchased a face cord of firewood, which as any reputable dealer (or a google search) will tell you is a stacked pile of wood that measures 4 ft x 8 ft x 1.5 ft . It's a standard measurement. What was delivered was approximately 2 ft x 8 ft x 1.5 ft - A FULL 50% SHORT OF ADVERTISED. I talked to the owner and he said that they "call it" a face cord, but since they also say that it's about 200 pieces, that's what they go by - the piece count. Now, of course a face cord could very easily only contain about 200 pieces if they are large enough. And that's what I was expecting: around 200 pieces of wood that are large enough to make up a face cord. But since the pieces that they delivered were very small, 200 of them was nowhere close. Again, I explained all of this to the owner when I spoke to him, and he stood by their practice of calling it a face cord even though that's not what they actually deliver. If you ask me, that's an astounding level of dishonesty coming directly from the owner of the business. I won't be buying from them again, and I suggest that you don't either. read more

Five stars does not do justice to this really excellent company and crew. We've had two experiences with Progressive in the past month, both dealing with two old, side-by-side, enormous cottonwoods on our property. The first experience dealt with a huge branch being blown down into our neighbor's front yard, blocking their front door and cracking their front window. I called Progressive's emergency number and Diego was at our house in an hour. The branch, 20" in diameter and 40' long was gone and cleaned up that day as Progressive elevated the job to emergency status. A month later a lightning strike hit both trees, sending cracks down their 130' high trunks. We got numerous bids. Progressive's bid was low to mid-range, and they had done such great work the first time we contracted with them again. Progressive said they had never seen a tree get hit like that and we all agreed these majestic trees had to come down. It was a sad, but safe decision. The crew of about ten men arrived at 7:30am on a Saturday on a 90+ degree day. They brought with them one crane, one cherry-picker lift, one chipper, a ditch witch and huge chainsaws. Throughout the day they filled at least three trucks with mulch and another three truck loads filled with 12 foot logs ranging in diameter from 24-48". The crew's work was skillful, careful, exact and a thing of art to witness. Added to that was how friendly, pleasant and happy the crew was. To top it off, this whole crew really respected the age and beauty of the trees they were taking down. Owner Juan is a certified Arborist and knows what he is talking about. Even the crane operator recognized how special these trees were and told us at the end of the day that he talked to the trees before they came down, saying he was sorry but their time had come. For some people, comments like that may seem silly and overly sentimental, but for us, having lived with these trees for the past 22 years (they were probably 100 years old), having enjoyed their shimmering canopies, their leaves sounding like an ocean in the sky, the heartfelt comments of the crane operator rang true and honest and brought a rich circle-of-life meaning to our whole experience. The crew had both trees down and all debris removed by 5:00pm, as promised, cleaned up and departed thanking for the opportunity to work for us. An expensive project, yes, but a good competitive bid. A memorable, life affirming experience? Absolutely. I give 100 stars to Progressive Tree Service of Evanston. read more

We had a large tree limb fall from a storm and Progressive Tree Service came out to provide a quote for removal in under 48 hours, and between the 5 companies. They were the cheapest by far. It was a large chunk of tree and they had a two man crew come out and had the debris gone within an hour. What would have easily been a full day job for myself, they powered through and had it gone in what seemed like an instant. These are good guys. Good people and good at what they do. My experience went like this: I emailed for a quote on pruning, got an email back asking when they could come look at the tree. We set up a day/time to meet. The day/time came and Juan was there on time to look at the tree. He was very nice and it's clear he actually cares about the trees and not just selling his service. He sent an estimate soon after-- maybe the same day-- I missed it because it went into my spam folder. He called to confirm I got the email and offered to resend it if I didn't see it. Estimate looked good, he seemed like a good guy who really knows and likes trees, so we set a date for the work. He said he'd contact me the day before to confirm everything and he did exactly that. Day of the job, they showed up as promised, did the work and cleaned up after themselves. The guys were all really nice. If this is the most boring review ever, it should be. Getting a great big tree pruned should be boring. Getting a big tree pruned that overhangs multiple houses and having it be boring is actually kind of refreshing and wonderful these days. Not a hassle, not an ordeal, not tense, not a horror show. From the first phone call to the last twig cleared from the ground, utterly according to plan, boring and delightful. We had a great experience working with Progressive Tree Service on removing a dead tree in our yard. From start to finish, Juan Carlos Martinez and team were extremely professional and easy to work with. When I asked Juan to assess the condition of our tree as a certified arborist, he was able to drop by the same morning, since he was working in the area. He made a reasonable case that the tree was dead and would need to be removed. He answered all my questions and sent a proposal the same day, which also ended up being the exact end price. The team removed the tree within a week on a single morning and was very careful not to damage our property or our neighbors'. They worked very efficiently in taking the tree down and took care of all hauling, clean-up and grinding down the tree stump. Our yard now has much more space and it is hard to tell there was ever a tree in that spot. Simply outstanding! These guys worked two days to clear out the jungle we had both in the front and back yard. They have done a fantastic job and cleaned up nicely. Our space looks so much bigger now, cleaner and the remaining trees look much younger after a trim. They paid attention to our neighbors' yard to minimize any damage and cleaned everything on their side. It's the first year in our first home and this is just something that had to be done for a number of reasons but primarily for safety. Juan carefully assessed the situation and worked with us to find the best solution. He took care of everything from requesting the permit to supervising his team and reviewing the progress. We were positively impressed how they handle business and how understanding they can be even with the financial aspect. The price was quite reasonable for the amount of removal and trimming. I needed a 75 foot Ash tree removed from my side lawn in prime storm season. I was worried this dead Ash tree was going to come trough my house on the next thunderstorm. I spoke to Juan and he met with me on my schedule to quote the tree removal. I had received quotes from 2 other companies and Progressive was extremely competitive and fair. My priority was to have the tree removed as soon as possible, Progressive had a team out to remove the tree the next day. They were able to move there schedule around to fit my needs. My neighbor had the same issue with 2 dead Ash trees in there lawn as well. They removed all the trees and logs from the yards within 5 and a half hours! Progressive removed two trees. They emailed a bill to me instead of dropping one in the mailbox. The only way to pay the bill is online. When I did this, they charged over $25.00 more for using a credit card and paying online, yet there wasn't another option. I called the company multiple times with no call back or resolution. If you use this company, make sure they leave a bill at your house instead of paying them online. It feels like the company is not being straight forward in their costs. read more

A couple of my neighbors and I had been plagued with over $50k of property damage from falling limbs of two ginormous cottonwood trees that stood no less than 100' tall, had trunks no less than 5-6 feet in diameter and stood in an alley up close a personally with a ComEd pole behind our homes over the past couple of year. Of course when I went to ComEd AND the City of Chicago they could 'do nothing'. I took matters into my own hands and called no less than eight tree services. I got quotes from them all ranging from just over $4K to no less than $23K. While we we settled on one highly rated company on the day they were to come and take the tree down I received a call from the owner who cancelled the job right then and there! Seriously? Yes, seriously! (That's another review I will be making.) Not more than a week prior to this cancellation I had received an email from Juan at Progressive touching base and offering me a 10% discount if I still wanted/needed the tree taken down. I called him and explained the situation. He came by in no time and on November 8th he and his competent crew came to take the trees down. My two neighbors and I are SO HAPPY we hired Progressive. They showed up on time, were extremely careful, worked diligently and safely. They had coordinated everything with ComEd who had to shut the power off the some 100+ homes in order to get those HUGE trees down. They were one of the most efficient group of workers I ever witnessed. And in the end, you could hardly tell the tree had been cut down if it weren't for the stump we left in the ground. If your trees need attention I wouldn't give hiring Progressive Tree Service a second thought. I'd hire them pronto! read more

Someone was supposed to come out and look at my trees to give me an estimate. No one was going to be home so I left my back gate open for them to come in and Survey the trees. After not hearing from anyone for 2 days I contacted the company and which I was told someone would get back to me. After waiting another three days and still not hearing anything I contacted the company again just to be told that once again someone would get back with me. To this day I still don't know if anyone came out into my yard to survey my trees to give me an estimate. As of now I still haven't heard back from the company and it's been over a week. read more

I called Progressive Tree Service in 2020 based on the wonderful reviews on Yelp. It's a long story, but suffice to say that our neighbors are putting in a wood fence, and asked us to contribute to this project by taking out two small trees on our side, grinding a stump, and paying to take out the chain link fence. We're nice neighbors so we agreed to all of this. I called two companies, and Juan's company came in a good $200 under the other company's estimate, but he couldn't come until the following week. Then our neighbors sprung on us that the fence was going sooner than we expected and so the trees and stump needed to be out immediately. I called Juan and he came out a day after his estimate to do all the work! I have never worked with a company that works with the customer in such a way. A huge branch fell off a big tree in my yard and destroyed my roof riser. To avoid this happening again, I contacted a few tree companies. Juan, the owner, had the best quotes and unlike the other companies, he gave the best & honest advice. Either chop the tree down entirely or since the tree is still healthy, have large branches removed and tree balanced, which also maintains healthy climate & energy in my home. I chose the latter. The only issue was because of their busy schedule, my appointment was a few weeks away, but I decided to wait. Thankfully, there was a cancellation, and I was scheduled sooner. The entire team - from the office staff to the arborists - are very cordial & professional. When I saw them chopping down my next-door neighbors' tree on their front lawn, I ran outside thinking at first, they had messed up. Quick update - about a year after they took the tree out we finally went to plant some grass where it had been. We found out that there was still some stump in one area, and I contacted them to see if they could come back and get the part that was still there. It had been a year, so I wasn't sure what response I would get, but they said no problem and came back within a week or so to grind out the last little bit that was left. (It was a huge tree, so really easy to see how they could have missed a little bit that was still there.) No cost - just came out, ground the rest, and left. read more
