I really appreciate the care she takes in assessing what needs to be done--she clearly knows her stuff. The crew that came out recently to trim shrubs, bushes, and trees, as well as remove a few, did outstanding work. They were efficient, respectful of the property, and left everything looking clean and well-maintained. Carlos, the site manager (I think that is his job title), was very receptive to listening to my requests and effectively communicating them to his team. "I recently took down a small tree in front of my house. Digging out the stump turned out to be a little too much for me, especially in 100° weather, so I decided to ask for quotes to have it ground out. I received three quotes ranging from $150 to $300; the $300 quote came from Manitoya Tree Service. I decided to hire them because timing was important to me, and they offered to perform the service within two days. They showed up on time, and ten minutes later, the small stump was gone. The person performing the service was very friendly, and up to this point, it was five-star service. The disappointment occurred when I learned that I would be charged a credit card fee, especially since I was already paying the highest quote. My daughter runs a tiny business compared to Manitoya Tree Service, and she never charges her customers credit card fees. For that reason, I am giving them three stars, and I will not recommend this company to my friends and family. I used Montoya Tree Service 2 1/2 months ago to cut down 3 dead blue spruce. Anthony came out gave me a fair written estimate the same day. Scheduling was easy and the work was done cleanly. I WAS extremely happy. I came back to Montoya 3 weeks ago to help us manage a Honey Locust whose roots are causing my driveway to buckle. Desta came out to give us an estimate and we have had an extremely frustrating and disappointing experience. She gave us a verbal quote while she was on our property. Then 4 days later she sent us a written estimate that was more than double what she originally quoted us. When I asked for an explanation, she came back to us 3 days later indicating she did not account for the clean up of debris. What?? We were clear when she was at our property, we were having the driveway completely redone due to the root damage. Why would you not include clean up for a job like that? What are we going to do with the tree debris? How is the asphalt company going to be able to complete their work with tree debris in the way? I sent a message to Desta and have called the office multiple times and no one has returned my call to provide an explanation. It truly is unfortunate that they treated a returning customer this way. We have quite a few tree projects around the house, which they will now no longer get the chance to bid on because of the horrendous service we have experienced. read more

I have a no soliciting sign on my door as we work from home and need quiet. When you hire this company they come and solicit all your neighbors. I told the employee who knocked, that his action of knocking despite the no soliciting sign is trespassing and he called me a "dumbass". Desta and her crew have been to our house twice in the past few years to trim and maintain the bushes and trees in our yard. She is professional, thoughtful, and detail-oriented, and she clearly knows what she is doing. It can be a little unnerving to give your whole yard a "haircut", but it's much easier to appreciate the results when you know the person who is in charge has everything under control. The crew, too, did a great job - they paid careful attention to her directions, worked efficiently, and cleaned everything up beautifully at the end. If there were 10 stars, I'd give them that. We had a large tree limb come down on power lines in the back yard on a Friday night. We called several tree companies. Francisco stopped by that night and explained the tree was in poor health overall and needed to come down, which we had kind of figured. He said he could maybe come on Saturday, if not early the following week. To our surprise, he did come out on Saturday.. relieving our stress so much! His team was efficient and extremely careful not to damage our property as the tree was up against the house too. DO NOT USE THEM. COMPLETELY UNRELIABLE AND UNPROFESSIONAL. We signed a contract with Montoya to do our snow plowing this year. The first big snow we had last week, they failed to to show up. My wife texted them, and they apologized and said we we were somehow left off their list, and couldn't come out until the next day, which they did. They didn't charge us for the plow, but I would rather have had it done timely, and pay for it. We had a lot of snow on late Friday the 18th, into Saturday morning the 19th, and my wife texted them at 10 am Saturday to make sure they would not again forget to plow us. We waited all day Saturday, and sent them another text, and left two voice messages, and they still failed to show up or return a call. By Sunday morning, it was obvious they weren't coming, so I cleared the driveway myself. I have no idea how a small business can treat its customers this way. I'd avoid them at all costs. read more

I have 11 different trees on my property and some of them needed pruning. There are also a few that I needed help identifying. I contacted Montoya and two other tree services. Montoya was the first to respond and first to come on site. The certified arborist patiently identified the trees on my property, explained what their preferred living conditions are, assessed their health, and recommended how to maintain them. The most important part was, he listened and used my opinions/requirements as input whereas the arborists from the two other tree servers were both just prescriptive without listening. It turns out that between the three quotes, Montoya's was the mid priced entry. But given the trust built by the arborist, I selected Montoya. On the day of the service, the crew arrived on time, was very courteous, efficient, and careful. They were very careful about protecting my patio furniture and even my neighbor's before and during the work. And after everything was done, they did a really job cleaning up. I could not tell they were here at all. I recommend Montoya to anyone who needs their trees taken care of! read more

I contracted with Montoya to trim several trees last summer after reading all of the positive reviews on Yelp. They trimmed a redbud, and did an OK job. Basically there was no thought put into it, just shorter branches - like a bad haircut. The real problem was with the honey locust. I purchased that tree specifically because it had a long, arching branch that went over a phone wire and covered the view of the alley and neighbor's garage. I nursed it and trimmed it myself for several years until it got too big for me to trim. I got a quote from Montoya, and made sure to verbally AND in writing on the contract that that arching branch was NOT to be touched. They came out as planned (yes very nice and prompt and decent pricing) and cut off that branch. When I came home I couldn't believe my eyes - the tree looks like a palm tree now, and all the planning, time, money, and care I put into that tree is ruined. I immediately called them, and they apologized profusely, took responsibility, and came out to talk about it. THey didn't charge me, but honestly, I would pay anything to reverse the damage they did. I've spent 20 years thoughtfully planning my garden, and now everytime I go in my backyard I cringe. If you don't care about the esthetic quality of your trees and just want them trimmed (again, cheap, bad haircut analogy), then call Montoya - they were nice and prompt. I woke up on Christmas Eve with a tree down in my front yard. First estimate was $300 with a possible extra $50 for the stump removal. The next estimate was $280 with an additional $60 for the stump....these were estimated based off my photos. Ralph came out from Montoya and said he can do it all for $185! I said "Great, when can we have this done?" He said he had a chainsaw in his truck and he'd do it right now. I called Ralph at 8 and by 10:30 the tree was in a neat pile on the parkway. He promised someone would be out Saturday to haul away the pile or for me to let him know. Well sure enough, in the rain on Saturday, a truck with a wood-chipper was there and when I asked to keep the trunk for firewood, the guy went into his truck and got his chainsaw and chopped it up for me! I cannot recommend these guys enough and I know we will have them back this summer to remove some Emerald Ash Trees. read more

Outstanding! We obtained four quotes for branch trimming and a tree removal. Montoya was the least expensive and also able to do the job in the shortest amount of time. I was particularly impressed with Ralph (the gentleman who provided the quote) with his extensive experience as a certified arborist. In fact, of all four companies, Ralph with Montoya was the only one able to identify what was wrong with our dying pine tree (a specific insect) and provide additional information about the problem. The day after the quote, a team of workers came to complete the job. They were extremely professional and efficient. At the end of the job, they cleaned up all of the branches, leaves and sawdust from cutting. They did a very good job removing a birch tree in front of my house. I found them on Yelp and checked the Yelp reviews and BBB. They were prompt responding to my inquiry via Yelp (you need to check the Yelp messages if you don't have Yelp notification on). Removing the stump means grinding it only (a couple days later). Removal of the chips is a separate charge. They were professional and courteous both the people that came to complete the job and also their office/ phone person.
