I will always recommend Proper to people visiting Nashville. Located by the historic Belmont campus, this shop has fresh made bagels and cream cheese daily. There are a lot of bagel places in Nashville and Proper Bagel is high on the list. The two places I went both had huge mounds of flavored cream cheeses. I got here right at 8am on a Sunday morning on my way out of town but it took me a few minutes to find parking. This is basically on the perimeter of the Belmont University campus and the parking was horrible. Pretty area though! When I got there I walked right up to the cashier and asked if I could order a lunch sandwich at breakfast. She said yes but wanted to let me know they are running 30 minutes for an order at the moment. Ugh. I said OK, I will take one salt bagel, 1 black & white cookie, and 1 rainbow marzipan bar. I started eating the bagel in the car after I got out of town. It was way too big and didn't have the crisp exterior or the dense chewy interior I want from a bagel. Later in the day I tasted the pastries. The black & white cookie was very thick and dry. Rainbow cookies are my jam and I had high hopes for the rainbow marzipan bar but it was dry and didn't have much flavor. Obviously I'm in the minority and this place is very busy. read more

We parked on 18th Ave. and were able to use the back entrance, which seemed like an insider hack. - Order ahead if you can. My husband and I braved the regular ordering line on a Sunday morning around 9 am - and managed to walk away with our bagels after about 30 minutes. I know there are specific windows in which you can place an online order ... so plan ahead and do what you can to avoid the line! - If you can't order ahead ... decide what you want to order before hopping into line. The space is small and there are lots of delicious looking schmears and sauces and salads on the line ... and it can be overwhelming to make a decision amid all the hustle and bustle. Bottom line ... you're probably going to wait in line, and there's probably going to be a crowd, but these bagels are worth every second you spend waiting! We ordered two Everything bagels with Pumpkin Pie Cream Cheese (I'm all about sweet and salty) and have nothing but praise for this delicious bagelry. Cute but consistently crowded bagel shop with undoubtedly amazing bagels. Perfect UN toasted, the way they should be. Their cream cheeses are so innovative and visually appealing. Ultimately I got a classic combo of everything with lox cream cheese (that also has onions and capers mixed in). I got a "light" spreading of cream cheese which is a lot by anyone else's standards. Not sure I could tolerate the calorie bomb of a regular spread of cream cheese. The bagel had a great texture and a perfect chew. Will definitely be back. Hopefully on a less crowded day. read more

I was on a work trip to Nashville and wanted to treat the office that I was visiting to some good local food. They recommended Proper Bagel, and they were so correct to. Not only was the food delicious (ordered a bunch of bagel sandwiches, yogurt, and coffee carafe to go), their service was above and beyond. They learned that I was the only person who will be carrying enough food and drinks for a whole team and needed to take it out to my Lyft when it arrives, so they insisted -- several times! -- on waiting outside with me to help me carrying it all. I kept telling them that it's fine, I'll figure it out, but they said that it wasn't a big deal, and I am so glad that they did because I severely overestimated the amount of hands I have. Not only did they carry out everything, but they even went across the street with me because that's where my Lyft driver parked. And the food! The bagel sandwiches were cut in half, so we got to sample different types. Our gluten-free staff members also loved the yogurt with granola and were thankful that Proper Bagel was inclusive with their menu. I got an egg and avocado on a rosemary thyme bagel and it was amazing. the selection was immense and all looked so tasty. Not only do they have bagels, but also pastries that looked delectable. It was hard to choose what to get because everything looked so good. The thing that stuck out the most and made me write this review was the service. As I mentioned, they were slammed with a line out the door. We had our order taken by the owner and they were so nice. My friend and I came here for breakfast on a Saturday morning when visiting town. We got there around 9am and the line wasn't too bad. The line moved pretty quickly. The staff was very friendly and helped with recommendations. We both got the Rosemary Garlic and Egg bagels and a Proper Dark and Dirty. The ingredients that they use to fill the bagels are EXTREMELY FRESH and you are well aware of it. From the eggs, to the homemade ketchup, to the cream cheese, everything is as fresh as can be. There is also a huge variety of bagels, combinations of ingredients, and modifications you can make to your order. From the quality of the food to the way it is packaged, this place gives you an authentic deli feel without even seeing the inside. Now that you are inspired to stop by, I would recommend either ordering right at 8:00am when they open ordering. If that is not possible, you may want to give it a good while. Right now they are only open for to-go but their website says they will reopen for dine-in again in June. I recommend ordering online ahead of time but you can order at the door and wait at one of the benches outside. There are only four picnic benches though so if you go at a popular time then there might not be a spot. There is limited street out front but I've never had any issues finding a spot. I was really disappointed by the whole experience at this place. I didn't have high expectations, but even those were not met. The place does not have an indoor area where you can wait. It's best to place an order online ahead of time and arrive half an hour later to pick it up. I did not know that the wait time would be so long. I placed an order with a lady who came out to greet me. I was not told the total and just handed over my credit card. I ordered a salmon avocado toast with an egg on top. The total came out to almost $20. After waiting for 25 minutes on Wednesday morning, I got a sandwich in a large plastic box. When I arrived at my hotel room 10 minutes later, that toast was completely soaked and was not even toasted. It was basically a piece of bread under a mountain top of mashed avocado that was already getting dark, thin layer of salmon and a cold egg. Really disappointing, especially the state of bread. The wait time on top of that made the experience less than positive. I would consider coming back here for a bagel, but a salmon avocado toast is not going to be something that I will order again. read more

We ordered an Everything bagel with jalapeno bacon cream cheese & a Cinnamon Crunch bagel with cookie dough cream cheese. It took 40 minutes to get our food which was disappointing, but we learned our lesson that we needed to order on our way there. The bagels themselves were the best bagels I've tried in Nashville. Moving somewhere like Green Hills or somewhere with a better parking situation is going to be the way forward. Not worth the wait or the money. My husband and I stopped here over the weekend to grab some bagel sandwiches for breakfast. We waited over 45 minutes to get our bagel sandwiches... And well apparently if you don't get egg in your sandwich, then you get a cold sandwich because apparently the only part that gets warm up is the egg... Which seems a little odd.
