    lack of cream cheese :(
    Jacqueline O.

I always get proper bagel when I'm back in Nashville and oh my I was SO DISAPPOINTED this visit! I've always loved proper bagel's portions, especially when it comes to the schmear. They even used to have an option for extra cream cheese back in the day (long gone). Fine, I get it, costs are going up so no more free extra spread, totally reasonable. WELL. This time around they totally catfished the amount of cream cheese for a standard bagel. It was middle-loaded so it looked normal when splitting the bagel at the cross section, but there was barely any cream cheese around the edges. This is not the proper bagel and I know and love! So sad to see it go downhill.

This is one of my favorite places to get a bagel sandwich for breakfast or for lunch. You have lots of choices, and if you have a specific bagel you're craving, you'll want to order earlier because bagels do sell out. The staff is always wonderful when I visit. It has a modern vibe, and I love the black and white color scheme. It gets busy, so ordering online is my preference. You can dine in, but when it's busy, you may not be able to find a table. There's free parking on the street, but depending on the time of day, you may have to park further away and walk. Love: service (kind, attentive, helpful); bagel sandwiches (smoked turkey BLTA is a fav)

Seasonal bagel was really good and seasonal Latte was also very good!! I was pleased with the items that were featured for Christmas time and can't wait to go back and taste the regular menu items. They have a huge assortment of bagel options and toppings, plus lots of salads that look scrumptious! I could point my finger spontaneously on the food options and know I would love any choice made for breakfast and lunch. I wouldn't even have to give it much thought, I'd be anxious to try any "surprise." Belmont students & staff are fortunate to have this establishment next door to the university. If I attended there, it would probably be my daily go-to place. Oh, you may want to plan to park elsewhere and walk to Proper Bagel. They only have about 4 spots in front of the building, and they stay occupied.

Really great bagel. Super soft and chewy without being too chewy (more than a few places in LA come to mind...). Ton of flavor on the everything bagel and lots of selection for their usual bagel menu. They're closing up shop from 1/5/26 - 1/14/26, so they were out of a ton of stuff. They were all out of gluten free bagels, which was a huge bummer for my partner. No avocado, no meat except pastrami (which was fine by me!) and no cheese except muenster (also fine by me.) They did forget to add arugula and hashbrowns on the sandwich, but they refunded us at least. Apart from the missing items, the pastrami and egg + tomato on an everything bagel was pretty good! Inside was super busy, but the line still moved pretty fast, and we got lucky enough to snag a four top for our group. I'd definitely come back, and hopefully next time they won't be out of most of their menu! :)

I recommend this place with a caveat. The food is fantastic and it is a true "NY Style" bagel shop with a great atmosphere and a great menu. The service is not what one would expect. When you walk in there seems to be a substantial amount of employees on the scene. I've visited this location for years and the view is always the same with lots of employees standing around while lots of customers are standing around as well. The service is painfully slow for what is general a fast service type of establishment in most cities. To be clear the food is amazing but if all you order is a plain bagel with butter and not toasted - be prepared to be there for 15 minutes waiting on it. I've been a customer here since 2016 and will continue to be a customer but the service is slow and has not changed in years.

Was in the mood for a bagel while in the area and found this establishment through a quick google search. After seeing the photos I just had to give this place a go. Parking is tricky, especially on a rainy morning. Determined to fulfill my craving I found a parking up the road and took a brisk walk. To my delight it wasn't too busy and I was able to place my order and receive it quickly. Due to my parking situation I ordered my meal to go. I ended up ordering a Pesto Bagel sandwich minus the tomato, but added some turkey. Let me tell ya, the sandwich was huge in the best way possible. I only ate half and saved the rest for later. Every bite was delicious. I would love to come again and sit in the eye pleasing space. I was especially impressed by the vast amount of schmear's and assorted bagel flavors. Next time I'll meet to find better parking though.

Today we stopped at Proper Bagel on a whim. I have to say I was presently surprised. There were so many options to pick from. We decided on the Smoked Turkey and Brie and the Waldorf Chicken Salad. Both of these were super yummy. However, the Turkey and Brie definitely had more flavor in my opinion. As soon as you walked in, we were greeted with a smiling face to help us narrow down all the ama,ing choices they had to pick from. I had to really restrain myself from not ordering all the cream cheese choices they had. Haha. The seating was a little tight but not to horrible. There is outside sitting if that is what you prefer. All in all, I will be back next time in the Nashville area.

Overall: this place was SO yum! I got an iced dirty chai and the garlic rosemary & egg bagel. The bagel was super flavorful and filling -- a perfect breakfast. Service: Very kind staff and pretty quick to take our order despite the place being so busy! Ambience: Very cute "bagel deli" vibes. Smaller on the inside so finding preferable seating could be an issue, but it's also a nice area to walk around so not too big of a deal.

We went for a bit of a different experience, something we don't always go for. I really liked the style of the interior: black and white tile literally head to toe. Parking wasn't too bad unless you have mobility issues. Despite their whole thing being NY-style bagels, I actually selected a Reuben on Pumpernickel. I wasn't feeling like eating a whole bunch of whipped cream cheese or a chicken salad. Portion sizes were pretty good, actually. I think the main things for me would be to simplify the menu and offer size options. Something like half a bagel or like a "classics variety" (like a variety cheesecake). So you could pick and choose quarters or maybe thirds. I was happy to see they had savory cream cheese options because they are so underrated. I also got their honey lavender lemonade which was fire and not too sweet. The staff were all great and it is clearly a pretty popular spot. Overall no issues and I will probably go again.

Proper Bagel is a small quaint place in Belmont. I ran into the bagel shop one morning, while I was out for a jog. The store has a huge range of cream cheese for the bagels, and a wide variety of salmon to choose from. I had picked their garlic rosemary and egg breakfast bagel which also contained applewood bacon. I went for their everything bagel. The bagel was super filling, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The bagels here are slightly on the pricier side, but totally worth it. Servers are polite and give great recommendations.

Proper bagel is one of my first loves in Nashville. It's so consistently good that I find myself coming back time and time again. It's the top bagel place for a reason. I pretty routinely get the Leo because it's the perfect salty and savory breakfast and It's so filling I usually spilt it into two meals. The staff is super kind and helpful if you have questions. The place is great to sit and hang out in, even on hot summer days on the patio. Parking is rough so plan to do a little walk, especially if school is in session. There is also no WiFi available so if you want to work here, you'll need to hot spot or plan alternately.

If I could give 10 stars I would! Best bagel place I've ever been to. I will be back on my next visit to Nashville!! Very clean and inviting. Thank you to the friendly staff and amazing people running this establishment! Yum!

Some of the best bagels I've tried in Nashville! Cute but super busy breakfast spot. You order at the counter for either to go or eat there. There are large refrigerator cases with all the fixings, a surplus of bagel options and a bunch of workers cranking out everyone's orders! I am a sucker for an everything bagel, so of course I had to try the New Yorker on that. I chose scrambled eggs and bacon with a slather of ketchup and it was delicious. I also tried the cinnamon bagel with lavender honey cream cheese, which was phenomenal. I honestly couldn't tell you which bagel I liked better!

Ask the Community - Proper Bagel

2022: do they still have gluten free options? If so, what?

Do they have gluten free options?

Yes they do! They had a variety of GF, vegan, non-dairy options, including salads and (I believe) GF bagels.

What kind of gluten free options do they have? I saw on their website that they offer them, but couldn't find what they were.

They used to have Gluten Free Focaccia on the weekends with the Egg and Avocado sandwich but because of Covid, you cannot request gluten free bread on their online ordering system.

Would you recommend Proper Bagel as a good spot to sit and do work for a few hours at a table or booth?

Maybe in the afternoon. But honestly probably not even then. It's absolutely packed to the brim in the morning. That being said, my experience was on a weekend!

I ordered the Chicken Parmesan sub, and it was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The chicken was super tender, packed with flavor, and the sandwich was huge. I only made it through half and ended up eating the rest later that night. It was just as good the second time around. My wife had the Spicy Italian, and she loved it. The sweet pickles on it really made the sandwich stand out and gave it an awesome flavor. The atmosphere was really cool and felt very authentic. They also have a grocery section where you can buy authentic Italian sauces, pasta noodles, and other items, which was a nice touch. The only thing that surprised us was the fountain drinks being $5 each, but they do come in a souvenir cup. If you're looking for an amazing sub sandwich, I highly recommend Little Hats. The food was fantastic, the staff was friendly, and Germantown itself is a great area to walk around and explore. There are tons of cool places nearby. We got a number and had no problem finding an indoor table as it was hot out. The outdoor patio is very large though and this place can hold a lot of people. The food came out in 10 minutes or so and the fontina cheese went well with the spicy cherry peppers, which were unique to this sandwich. It also came with some potato salad. They aren't bad, but they don't wow me either. The deli certainly slices their meats and cheeses fresh on the spot. But even that doesn't take the sandwiches to the pinnacle of sandwichhood. And my goodness, those booths have the most uncomfortable wooden backing at the most atrocious angle! You'll notice if you sit in a booth, and you might need back surgery afterward. A few minutes later, Big Al shouts, "Does anyone want a cinnamon bun?" and I have never been closer to taking a walk from my keto diet. But I was good and only drooled a little watching the couple sitting next to us split theirs. It smelled so good. Brunch arrived and we've now been at Big Al's for 90 minutes. I had selected the day's special, the FOUR egg steak omelet which I had with peppers and onions *filled* the plate. Sloppy and tasty and loaded with probably half a pound of sliced steak. My friend had a concoction that I can only call The Coronary Plate: Fried eggs, fried potatoes, fried chicken. Half of a fried chicken that looked better than anything I've ever seen at KFC or Popeye's or my own beloved Bojangles. Crispy, slightly burned but a light batter and a juicy center. Yeah, get that.
