I'm grateful for the doctors Silverman. Prospect Park Animal Clinic has handled my pets' needs for almost 20 years now. In that time, I've had five dogs and two cats.... This office is remarkably busy, which is not surprising...PPAC is a reputable veterinary office located on a beautiful brownstone block adjacent to Prospect park. Despite always being booked so far in advance, they always manage to somehow finagle us in, whenever my dogs need time sensitive care, versus some maintenance visit. These days, the office typically keep two competent receptionists on staff each day to manage the flow of appointments, both virtually and in person. I appreciate how Dr. Nick is willing to communicate with me after my visits and, sometimes when there is urgency, even before my visits. Times of illness, injury, and especially the passing of loved ones can be emotional Our pets all deserve responsive veterinarians who offer sound advice to their owners and communicate well about choices. Sadly however, this is not always the case. Whereas I might go somewhere else for a quicky vaxx visit, I would never go anywhere other than PPAC for my dogs' real care. Doctors Silverman always try their best. Also, the vet techs are fabulous and some seem to work there for years, thus creating a familiar family-doctors-office vibe. We got Apollo, dachshund in 2013 and Valentino, American Stafford in 2016. I have taken them to vets from Connecticut, Westchester NY, other local Brooklyn vets, to the VERG Hospital where Apollo was in ICU for 5 days, and I can say hands down our best experiences have been at Prospect Park Animal Clinic with Dr. Leonard Silverman and Dr. Nicholas Silverman. I have *never been treated rudely by any of the staff, they have always been professional and upfront and honest when we have medical questions. They call to check up on our pets post procedures, and if they are busy, I have found they always respond to emails. This is a mom and pop run vet clinic, I will always support the little family shop over a Banfield, Blue Peral, etc., but I would prefer and will always look for the smaller shop. And to the reviewer who called their clinic dingy, I dont know what he was expecting, they are pet Clinics not day spas. read more

First time visiting this clinic and was not disappointed! Made an appointment online and received a call from the clinic to make some adjustments. The actual appointment went smoothly, staff was friendly & the vet came to the lobby to get my dog and ask what exactly I needed. Since we're still in a pandemic I couldn't go in the back with my dog but I was able to wait in the lobby. At the end the doc brought my dog back to me & explained what was needed. I am so happy I found this veterinary clinic. The staff and veterinarians couldn't be more supportive and helpful. They really care about their clients and their pets. My dog had had a bad experience with another veterinarian and was very aggressive when we walked into the exam room. Dr. Silverman and his assistant took all the time needed to make my dog feel comfortable in the exam room and during her examination. It was obvious they cared about my dog and her needs. I highly recommend this clinic. They are more interested in providing good care then overcharging and just moving pets in and out of the exam room without really caring about the experience their clients need. read more

I have always found them to be honest and forthright, looking to perform the correct job for my dogs rather then try and build a huge bill. I have found their office staff pleasant and patient and their practice seems to constantly be busy, always a good sign in my book. I can honestly say that I wouldn't bring my dogs anywhere else, their focus on compassionate and quality care is truly unique. I never leave reviews but it wouldn't feel right to not warn others about my experience here. The pain and discomfort that my perfect Noah experienced in his final months were largely if not completely due to the neglect of the vets at this clinic. While the employees here are all extremely kind, and while Noah enjoyed his time at this clinic in boarding, I absolutely do not recommend Prospect Park Animal Clinic for veterinary care. I had been bringing my cat Noah, who recently died at around 12 years old, to Prospect Park Animal Clinic for about two years when he developed pancreatitis, which made him too nauseas to eat. It seemed there was no way to address the cause of his pancreatitis, as antibiotics were ineffective. I was unable to successfully give him anti-nausea medications orally and asked if there was any alternative. The youngest male vet (whose name escapes me) recommended that I give Noah regular injections of Cerenia until his nausea improved, although Cerenia is not labeled for long-term use. I asked if there were other, less invasive anti-nausea treatments. He said there weren't. I asked about potential side effects. He told me he had never seen any. Then the vet tech patiently taught me to give injections in one specific location in Noah's upper back. The Cerenia injections were so painful for Noah that he began to hide from me regularly. However, I believed that they were necessary to get him to eat, and I could space them out to once every few days, so I powered through, hoping his nausea would resolve itself. When Noah developed painful tremors that seemed to originate from the injection site, I looked up Cerenia's side effects and found that for even short-term use, Cerenia can cause neurological problems and muscle spasms. Still, I trusted the vet and figured Noah might just be getting old. Then Noah's tremors became so painful that he would cry and urinate uncontrollably when they occurred. They ultimately became almost constant. I brought Noah back to Prospect Park Animal Clinic. Dr. Silverman, who had not seen Noah previously, recommended simply changing Noah's diet. He also thought the tremors were a symptom of old age, but seemed perplexed as to why I was injecting the Cerenia in the same place each time, which he recommended I stop doing. Finally I brought up that I had read about Cerenia's side effects on Google, and asked if they might be a concern. The Dr. assured me that he had never heard of the side effects I'd mentioned, but proceeded to look them up himself. Then he recommended I stop injecting the Cerenia. I proceeded to ask what I could do to address Noah's continued nausea in the absence of using Cerenia. To my astonishment he recommended an inexpensive Pepsid cream that could be rubbed into Noah's ears. Apparently the highly expensive, extremely painful, and potentially dangerous Cerenia injections that I had at that point been giving Noah for months had been completely unnecessary all along. Noah did not mind the cream at all and it worked perfectly to resolve his nausea. Frustrated and upset, I decided to seek care elsewhere (at the All Creatures Vet Hospital, which I highly recommend). Within literally 5 seconds of Noah's physical exam, the vet there identified that he had a truly horrible case of fleas. The fleas were very likely the cause of his tremors. I was so happy that Noah had fleas! I had thought he might have irreversible damage from the Cerenia! I began to pick off his fleas with a free flea comb that the new vet provided me. Noah improved immediately and dramatically, and all seemed well. Unfortunately, two days later Noah was very noticeably lethargic. He could not get off of my bed to pee and was breathing heavily, so I brought him to the ER where they diagnosed severe anemia. Too much blood was lost for Noah's anemia to be due to the fleas. When Noah's blood count continued to drop after an initial blood transfusion, it was determined to be either cancer or a blood cell -destroying infection, perhaps caused by the fleas. The latter was ruled out. I will never know exactly what happened to Noah; diagnostic tests would have been very uncomfortable for him and the new vets agreed that his prognosis was poor regardless. On November 17th, I put my best friend to sleep after months of unnecessary pain and discomfort due to not just Cerenia injections; and not just a horrible, undiagnosed case of fleas; but also, in all likelihood, bone cancer. Please save your own pets from over-medication and medical neglect by choosing a different clinic. read more

DON'T COME HERE. I brought my happy, healthy 15-year-old cat in for a routine checkup, and left in critical condition rushing him to the ICU at VERG, where he spent 3 days and they mercifully managed to save his life. This entire near-death trauma was the direct result of Dr. Leo Silverman's poor judgement. I liked him when we first met; he was a sweet guy and seemed kind and caring. HOWEVER. Once the appointment was underway, he came out to tell me that my apparently healthy cat had a large mass on his liver, and he really went out of his way to paint a bleak picture of imminent demise (this was in stark contrast to the vets at VERG , who later said that benign liver masses are not uncommon in older cats, and this could easily be "something he dies with, rather than dies FROM." After whipping me into a terror and telling me "your cat has a very bad disease," he asked me, "do you want us to do a needle aspiration?" (That's to pursue a diagnosis of the mass). He failed to tell me ANY of the risks, OR the options; he made it seem like a simple black and white question, like "do you want to pursue a diagnosis or not." So of course I said yes. He then proceeded to attempt this procedure of sticking a large needle into my cat's liver with NO SEDATION-- he even came out after a while to say my cat was putting up an unusually strong fight; but even then all he said was "we'll keep trying." Not ONE WORD about potential risks, still-- as far as I knew, there weren't any. Also not one word about any other options for where and how this procedure could be done that might be safer. I'm still trusting this vet that he's doing the best thing for my cat-- who came in here perfectly happy and healthy, with no symptoms of any kind. Finally he gets the needle aspiration done, and then comes out to tell me my kitty has collapsed and is now on oxygen to "help him come around." It took them a while to figure out he was actually bleeding internally and in hypovolemic shock, due to tearing a blood vessel while thrashing around during this needle-in-the-liver procedure. They gave him *one* medication that was supposed to help stop the bleeding; and when that didn't work, Dr. Silverman acted like there was nothing else to be done, and at that point he let me come back to the room to be with my kitty because he was probably dying right there and then. It took ME sobbing "isn't there anything else you can do?!" For him to bring up the fact that there was an emergency animal hospital nearby (VERG), where he could receive a blood transfusion and critical care. WHY would a vet not advise going to the hospital for life-threatening internal bleeding until the owner brings it up? WHY wouldn't he use a freaking sedative? WHY wouldn't he tell me that there is *always* a risk of internal bleeding with this procedure, and that it could be done at the hospital under more controlled conditions? Everything the vets at VERG told me (who I cannot recommend more) was very different from what Dr. Leo Silverman told me. They gave me a well-rounded picture of all the different possibilities for what the liver mass could indicate, many of which were not very scary at all; Dr. Silverman whipped me into a terror and told me unequivocally that my cat had a "very bad disease." VERG told me internal bleeding is always a risk with these kinds of liver pokes, which is why THEY always keep pets overnight for observation after doing one (and sedation is a given); Dr. Silverman did not sedate, did not tell me that there were any risks, and definitely did not plan to keep my kitty overnight, as he repeatedly stated "before I send you home...yatta yatta." I'm sure he didn't intend for this to happen, and he was a nice guy like I said at the start. But he almost killed my cat, for absolutely no reason. This was a clear case of malpractice, and I will definitely be reporting him to whatever supervisory board oversees vet licensing in NY. read more

Former clients for 10+ years, we are sad to see what the animal clinic has become. Our dog was sent home post sedation without any pain meds and has been suffering since. The emergency, after hours number is actually the phone number of a non-affiliated animal hospital (who apparently has no idea that they are listed as the emergency number for the vet and no knowledge of your pet's medical history). The staff is aggressive and completely apathetic. It's a father/ son practice and while the father is a sweetie, the son is not at all. They don't have capacity to treat the families they have - last time I was there a dog was suffering chocolate poisoning, laying in the waiting room and vomiting on the floor - and was not receiving medical attention because they were busy with regular appointments. The last time my dog was sick and needed meds for vomiting and dehydration, they said they didn't have time to see her for months. All the vets in our neighborhood are super busy but any of them would be a better choice than this one. read more

I don't recommend Dr. Ray if you have a large dog (we have a golden retriever). I've never seen a vet who seemed more uncomfortable and perplexed by giving basic care to a larger breed dog. My husband and I both walked away saying - what was that? We and our dog had a bad experience here - and our dog doesn't even mind going to the vet and we were just there for routine updates vaccinations. It's possible Dr. Ray is better with other types of animals (and humans...we didn't find his manner with us very enjoyable), but he's not the right fit for us. In addition to this, the front desk staff was rude and gave us the wrong info over the phone. They charged us more for just the visit fee than was quoted over the phone - they said $50 for the visit alone and charged $75. We also went there partly because they said they carried the medication we needed to pick up in-house. When we got there they said (rudely) that they do not. So much for the "full service pharmacy" listed on their website...it was a very basic med. The exam room was also cramped and the whole place feels a little dingy. It says a lot that even though this place is less than half-a-block from my house, we are choosing to go somewhere 8 blocks away today to see if we can find a better fit. read more

I've been bringing my 7mo pup here since he was 2months. I've had an excellent experience here on each of my visits (with the exception of the complete and utter lack of parking in the area *sigh*). Dr. Quinn and Dr. Holloway have been great, professional, helpful and friendly. Full disclosure for this next bit: My sister is a vet in a different state, and so I hear a lot of behind the scenes information about the business of being a vet. Reading the other reviews here is depressing and fills me sympathy for vets in general. Pet owners can really be crazy sometimes as some of these reviews demonstrate. For example: I brought my 15yr old cat in here with vague symptoms of "something is wrong" and the vet couldn't figure out what the problem was" I guess the Dr. forgot his crystal ball that day. OR "They told me they were going to sedate my dog but I didn't know that meant using anesthesia" Maybe she expected them to use soothing music and message therapy? Other common examples are: "The results came back negative and you still expect me to PAY for these tests?" or "I don't know why he's fat, I only feed him when he's hungry" I'm not denying there can be problems. Technicians/receptions can have bad days, mistakes can be made, communication could be improved on all fronts. But try to be realistic about what you expect from a vet, and if you have questions about timing, cost, procedures, anything, then ASK and ASK AGAIN until you are satisfied that you understand what they're telling you. read more

Here is a little story of how awesome they are: a bunch of us at Mount Prospect Park found a abandoned pit bull tied to the fence during off-leash hours. After calling many rescue places to no avail. One of the kind regular park-goers decided to take the abandoned pit home until she gets a new home. He took her to Prospect Park Animal Clinic for a checkup, they examined her, gave her up-to-date shots, and fixed her, for free! They are not there to make money, to call for unnecessary tests for silly symptoms. They are just there for your animals. read more

I liked that this place felt like a neighborhood, family spot but would have preferred a bit more time and conversation about my puppy's needs. I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the medication and information. Also when I showed up for my second visit I was told I didn't have an appointment (although I was able to pull up the confirmation email). Right after I posted this my puppy had an emergency. Even though I'd never been there before, I called and was in with an appointment in half an hour. They were caring and thorough and patched her up. A week later she had her spaying. I've felt like calling some vets can be frustrating, but they were super helpful. She came out of course dopey but obviously well cared for. Her incision area is tiny and the stitches super neat (especially compared to those done by the ASPCA animal hospital on our other dog.) Also the cost was a good 50 bucks under the given estimate. Very happy to have found a friendly, caring, honest vet nearby! read more

Not only was it my cat's 1st time at the vet since his adoption, but it was my 1st time at a vet ever! We only had to wait about 10 minutes for the doctor to be ready for us, and everyone was very understanding that my cat was basically howling in his cat carrier in the waiting room. Dr. Quim was very gentle with my cat, and calmed him down, even though he was there to get some shots. My cat remained super calm, and I also felt very comfortable. I'm so pleased that this place is only 3 or 4 blocks from my apartment! I know my cat has a lovely vet to go to! read more

I want to start off with the fact that I was traveling internationally with my dog and needed a health certificate. Dr Quim is USDA certified (confirmed with USDA themselves). I knew I had followed all rules necessary to bring my dog but when I called some vets to get the certs, the vets kept saying I had missed some guidelines. Hence I went into panic mode as I already had my flight booked. Dr Quim was the ONLY vet that said I had everything I needed (which was true). He happen to have an open slot and the receptionist was great in blocking it for me as I raced over. The staff was amazing, the dr filled out my international health cert and definitely saved me from a lot of unnecessary stress. (Other vets were saying I had to give my dogs a plethora of shots which wasn't true and seemed like they wanted more money). Will definitely come back here for future visits. read more

I can't believe I haven't written this yet! I've been taking my dog Bruno to PPAC almost the entire 8+ years of his life. I gave PPAC a shot when he was a wee puppy struggling with persistent giardia which was costing me a small fortune at another vet in the neighborhood. PPAC took great care of my little 2lb guy and recommended pragmatic, cost-effective care for him. They always recommend the least invasive methods and don't seem to over-medicate. A concrete example of this was with Bruno's neutering- the swanky vet in the neighborhood was going to charge me over $700 for a basic neutering of a healthy puppy because he would "need" extra fluid and to have his baby teeth pulled (?!?! he was only 14 weeks!) PPAC charged me a totally sane amount, didn't insist on any extra care unless they deemed it medically necessary and assured me that pulling his baby teeth wouldn't be necessary (it wasn't as they all fell out on their own!) When I decided to get our second dog, bringing her to PPAC was a no-brainer. She was a rescue and had some issues that I thought may be health related (ended up just being behavior related) and the doctors at PPAC were kind and understanding and, again, didn't recommend expensive tests for no reason. On top of all of this, the entire staff there is wonderful. I've seen 3 or 4 different vets and probably every member of the front desk and assistant staff and all of them are awesome. I went in for a consultation and they held my dog for ransom instead. I had a HORRIBLE experience with them today: after my dog was bitten by a pitbull, I brought him to see a vet for a consultation. My dog was happy and didn't seemed bothered, but I wanted to make sure he didn't need stitches, or at least could get his wounds cleaned up. The vet suggested that I leave my dog for an hour so they could lightly sedate him, then check out his wounds, and that he'd be ready to be taken home. I called and checked in when they told me to, and they told me he wasn't ready and to call back in 45 minutes. When I called back, the woman who answered the phone said my dog was just waking up (from what?) and that I can come pick him up at 5:30. (I brought him in at 10 a.m.!). I walked over to see what was going on, and no one knew. Finally, the vet came out and told me that my dog was just waking up . . . "from what?" I asked, and he said, "anesthesia." WTF? No one called to go over his diagnosis or check if my dog was okay to have anesthetics, OR if I wanted him to be put under and given stitches. We have a vet that we regularly go to, and I would've gone there if my dog needed stitches, because they're cheaper and better . . . but the vet at Prospect Park Animal Clinic disregarded any form of communication and went ahead and did his thing. The cost? $500.00. AND he tried to slap on antibiotics, which we already have at home, for an extra $100. NONE of this was done with my permission, and NEVER did they communicate or give me any kind of options. TOTAL rip off. I am glad my animal received care, but I have no idea what he was treated for, or what actually happened and why no one bothered to call and just say "I know we said we were just going to sedate him, but instead we're going to give him anesthesia and stitches and charge you $500 for it." Note to the vet: just because you're in Park Slope doesn't mean you can rip people off. Not everyone who lives here is rolling in dough. Ugh. read more

I think pissed off doesn't quite describe how I felt after dealing with this place. I called in advance and made an appointment for booster shots for my dog, I asked if I had to pay for a doctor's visit/checkup because my dog had had one less than 6 months ago (the answer was no, I didn't have to pay). I get there and not one, but two receptionists completely ignore me, when they decide to resume work they help the person who came after me first. Finally, we're ready to pay after getting the shots and get hit with an annual checkup fee. The dude behind the counter says that they have to charge that because it's the 2009 calendar year and my dog was in there in 2008 (sounds like a load of bull to me). Just thinking about this makes me want to hurt baby seals. I give this place a two because my vet options are limited and their prices are better than other places I've been to, but.. you pay for what you get. read more

I agree, this clinic is always accessible and the doctors are respectful. Yet after my dogs were misdiagnosed twice, I've decided to seek a new vet. Once, my dog got scratch on his cornia, the doctor assured me that it was not a big deal sent me away with an ointment and eyedrops-- no cone to ward away potential scratching-- again, he didn't think it was necessary. Yet after about a week they eye wasn't getting any better, I actually believe that it took a turn for the worse. When I brought him back, the doctor was shocked that the eye was in such bad condition and said that it didn't look normal. I asked why the eye took a turn for the worse, and he wasn't sure, but said the dog could have been scratching it. If scratching was something that could have made the eye worse, I feel that the vet should have sent me off with a cone the first time. In all fairness, i am not home to watch my dogs 24/7, but when i WAS home, i never saw him scratching it. Luckily, I was able to take him to a specialist and the eye is slowly healing-- but the specialist couldn't believe how misdiagnosed he was the first time. The other time, my dog blatantly had ring worm (i mean, there were circular patterns in her coat). The vet said it just looked like skin irritation, but still did his due diligence of taking a blood sample that they would monitor just in case it was ringworm-- which they said was highly unlikely, and sent me off with rimadil. BUT after three weeks, I got a call confirming that my dog actually had ring worm. Not really a big deal because it's easily curable with another pill, but I have two dogs and ringworm is highly contagious. My displeasure with this place could easily be a matter of not managing my expectations, as time and time again I was told not to worry.
