In a neighborhood as charming as Brooklyn Heights, this vet exceeds expectations. Let me tell you why. 1. The curb appeal of this vet is so cute. It adds to the charm of the neighborhood. They always decorate for holidays, and I especially love the giant skeleton they have at Halloween. Plus, we always have cute dogs hanging out at that corner. 2. I love that we have a privately owned, neighborhood vet in Brooklyn Heights. I was expecting the staff to be compassionate and helpful, and they were beyond nice. The inside is very cozy, but the patient rooms look modern and clean. 3. Brooklyn Heights is fancy, so I wasn't sure what to expect when it came to the bill. My dog Jeffrey had to renew all his annual vaccinations plus his three-year vaccinations. He had a full wellness check, including bloodwork and a fecal test. He had the works. It was expensive, but not unreasonable. Across all 5 vaccines and testing, it was maybe $100 more compared to prices at our last VCA vet in Boerum Hill. I was expecting more TBH. They also swabbed Jeffrey's ear to check for bacteria, and I did not see this on our bill. Thank you for that, Dr Chan! 4. I had read some reviews of people complaining about how the staff was difficult when asked for price breakdowns. I DID ask, and they were so kind. They really went out of their way to explain everything to me before I was charged or any procedures/testing had been done. If you had any questions or concerns with pricing, I would not hesitate to ask their staff, as they could not have been more accommodating. 5. Dr. Chan and her assistant (I'm looking for her name!) really went out of their way to adore Jeffrey. They were so sweet with him, and kept mentioning how cute and perfect he was (WHICH HE IS) and no parent gets tired of hearing how wonderful their child is. read more

She's helped us assess his age, breed mix, keep up to date on his vaccinations and ongoing health advice for bumps, bruises and cuts as well as heart worms and tick prevention. She's the best of the best and helped many of my friends cats and dogs with a variety of issues including surgeries. The facilities are state of the art and staff are friendly and professional. They are awful when it comes to returning phone calls which is frustrating. It's also the most expensive vet I have ever been to.

We could not be happier with the care that our mini bernedoodle puppy has received at BHVH. We have seen Dr Chan for most of our primary care visits, Dr Thompson to get her spayed, and Dr Venezia for a sick visit. They have all been very knowledgeable, approachable, and professional. The techs are equally helpful and welcoming. Same with the supportive staff. My two previous dogs were cared for at Vinegar Hill Vet, and the difference in care is noticeable. The staff at BHVH actually cares about my puppy and seem genuinely happy to see her for each visit. They are quick to answer any e-mails. I highly recommend this practice!! read more

The receptionist refused to let my girl come in because I wasn't interested in having her vaccines updated, nails clipped, etc., and a million other up charges. I haven't written a review on Yelp in years - but I am doing so today, because I don't want people to be subjected to what I have been dealing with for over a year. I have been seeing Dr. Thomson for all my pet care needs since 2005 - and have followed her to every clinic she has ever worked at, until she opened this clinic as her own. I used to think that she was very caring and genuinely concerned about her patients - but that is no longer the case. She's rarely available to take phone calls and when you leave a message for her to call you back, you're lucky if she gets the message at all. If you send her an email, your chances might be a bit better but, not by much. Since the pandemic, she is even less available to her clients and when she does speak w/you (over the phone), she is rushed and speaks to you as if you know all the in/outs of the medical condition(s) your pet may have, as well as not explaining things thoroughly or to your understanding. This poses a problem, because I'm never really sure "what" it is my pet has, or "what" my options are regarding any particular medical situation. Her staff, as other posters have already mentioned here, aren't any better. They are rude, entitled, disrespectful and unprofessional. I'm not sure "why" there are always so many new reception/front desk staff there but, perhaps if they hired 2-3 full time, experienced, employees (instead of young "kids") they might have a more organized and professional staff taking care of their clients - but it seems they are not interested in that. They hired an "office manager" a year or so ago and he's THE WORST person I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with! He's disrespectful, condescending, combative and unapologetic. Frankly, they were better off without him - as all he has done is made me realize that I can find a better environment for me and my pets elsewhere! The final straw was today, when he called me to tell me that I am not "allowed" to call their hospital, and that ALL communications with them, had to go through HIM - as if I had ever been anything but respectful with ALL of them! And, I am only allowed to call the hospital directly *IF* (and I quote) it is a "bona fide" emergency, or to return Dr. Thomson's phone calls (when you're lucky enough to actually receive a phone call from her)! Do yourself a favor - go somewhere else. There are so many other veterinary clinics out there, where you don't have to put up with disrespectful employees and having to call or email *SEVERAL* times, in order to get some sort of follow-up! I had to call them several times, as well as follow-up w/several emails, in order to FINALLY be told by their office manager that my cat's paw print was something they did as a "courtesy," and that I should be grateful that I got one at all, as they do this service from "the goodness of their heart." They don't charge for the paw prints - but they also don't take prints of BOTH their paws or tell you "which" paw they took a print of, if they only take one paw!! This place is a shit-show - and it all starts with the people at the front desk, and ends with a doctor that doesn't care about how her patients are treated. Have taken my pup here for a couple of years, and I think the vets are friendly and incredibly knowledgable, but just a few quirks of the practice that I'll mention here: - they always look so confused when I ask for an invoice before they perform any treatments. I know the BK Heights is a very posh neighborhood, but I live here too and I'm not "posh" so I want to see the bill before it's all said and done. This is such a reasonable request. - they still don't allow you inside the practice with your pet, which at this point in the pandemic, seems like overkill. - my dog is never excited to go inside? I don't know, but he claws at the door to get into other vet practices. It seems like he is freaked out in there. But otherwise, I think you can't go wrong here. It took about 5 email chains going back and forth for them to give me the $500 worth of test results I ordered. We love Brooklyn Heights Veterinary Hospital, especially Dr. Heather Thomson! We've been taking our two cats to this clinic for several years and have been extremely happy with the level of care, compassion, and professionalism shown by Dr. Thomson, other doctors, vet techs, and the front desk staff. Vet visits can be stressful, especially when pet owners are worried about their fur babies, but the staff always makes us feel at ease and well informed. We have an older cat who has health needs, and the staff has been so flexible and supportive in getting us in for time sensitive appointments, talking with us about possible treatment plans and helping us decide on the best route for our situation, helping us try to figure out all of the ways to get our old gal to eat more calories each day, answering questions, and even reaching out to check on our pets. We were especially impressed with how the clinic pivoted during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic to support so many people and pets despite the need for social distancing and increased health protocols. They made a welcoming outdoor seating space and the doctor always came out to talk with me in person at the end of a visit. I learned about this clinic and Dr. Thomson after being unhappy with our previous vet because they were not able to work with our older cat (she's feisty and escaped the exam room) and seemed exasperated in us because of our feisty cat. This has never been at issue at Brooklyn Heights Vet Clinic. The staff has always treated me and my partner, and most importantly, our pets with gentle and thorough medical care. Doctor Balsam was the only person worth seeing at this practice. She took care of our boxer Max for close to 7 years, and when it was time to say goodbye she gave us tons of support and made the situation as comfortable as possible for us. The office offered to have his paw print made and we thought it was a beautiful touch. We asked that the inscription on the paw be to our son. A few weeks after our dog passed we were finally ready to go in and pick up his ceramic paw print. The staff was searching the office and told us they couldn't find it. They saw we were upset and said they would look into it and give us a call. They never did. We called back again a week later and still no answers about what happened, and again no follow up from them. This has obviously really upset our entire family, and I find it incredibly inconsiderate and negligent on their part. Besides this situation, a few years ago when Doctor Balsam was out of town, our only option was to see Dr Thomson. Our dog had developed an eye ulcer and she told us that he had to immediately be scheduled for eye surgery the following day. We were in a complete panic as we were meant to be leaving town that weekend. I called around and spoke to my friend from the rescue where we adopted Max. She told us that the doctor was completely wrong and that we simply needed eye drops for him. She put us in touch with a veterinary ophthalmologist who confirmed that Dr Thomson gave us "grossly incompetent" information. We contacted Dr Thomson and shared with her all of the information we had gathered, as well as the names of the eye drops. She said she would speak to a specialist in the field and get back to us. She called later that day and said her specialist suggested the eye drops as well. If we hadn't called around we would have naively gone through with an incredibly painful eye surgery for our dog and dropped thousands of dollars. Instead, the eye drops healed him completely in a matter of weeks. According to some of the other reviews, it seems it's common practice for Dr Thomson to suggest tests, procedures and/or treatments that are simply not necessary. I wouldn't trust Dr Thomson with any pets. I'm not sure where Doctor Balsam went, but I would follow her anywhere. Stay away from this practice. read more

I'm so glad we chose the little white house with a red door as our vet! We just moved to the area and simultaneously got a new rescue puppy so we were in need of a solid vet. We booked the appointment before we even got him. Dr. Balsam was so good with our little guy and calmed us as new pet parents, answering any and all questions, even helped us clip his nails properly! WOW even as I write this, there is a woman arguing with the doctor about adding charges and services that she didn't agree to. My dog fractured her leg down the street at Hillside Dog Park(don't let your dog on the benches there) and I immediately rushed her to the closed vet which was these guys. I am so glad that they were the closest, the second I walked in they took my dog Nola in and gave her excellent care. The doctor is extremely knowledgeable and after looking at X-rays of Nola, could tell me exactly what she needed. I am from Boston, so I took her home immediately there for surgery, but if I was from NYC I would trust this vet to take care of her. If you do a check online of the services your pet receives, and the cost of what this vet charges, it is not astronomical AT.ALL I brought my dog (who, is an English bulldog and is prone to problems) here because he was peeing blood. HARDCORE blood. Naturally, I freaked and called hoping and praying they could squeeze him in. NOT only were they able to take him within an hour, but they ran the necessary tests, they had NO PROBLEM giving me a price estimate. They gave me a step by step on what they were doing, what they thought, etc. EVERYONE here was beyond nice, beyond supportive. Yes, they are busy, but don't you want a vet that is busy? To me that shows that they are in high demand and they know what they are doing. I have ZERO problems bringing my pet here. Extraordinary professionalism and standards. Clean and modern facilities. Very kind staff. I have in my care an oddly sentient, possibly-supernatural cat surely sent to earth to protect us from the forces of darkness. But for all that, Harmony got sick. Listlessness, ulcers of the mouth, going off her food. Poor girl was miserable. While other practices would have deferred care until later in the week--or month!--the person I spoke to by phone at BHVH took the situation seriously. They offered me an appointment that very afternoon. This was a relief and I'm grateful for it--the indifference of other offices was so discouraging. Blood was taken and the cat examined. The next morning, Dr. Balsam called me back with results from the blood tests. The situation was serious; she recommended a course of treatment that began with immediate hospitalization. Not the best news, but the clear explanation of the problem and proposed treatment put my mind at ease. During hospitalization, I received regular updates on Harmony's progress and mood. The initial diagnosis was borne out by treatment, to which Harmony responded rapidly. At every step, I had a clear idea of how she was doing. Two weeks later, she's back in business. Lively, curious and friendly again. Harmony will require some ongoing care here at home, but I got a thorough walkthrough of all her needs from an excellent vet tech who clearly loves the animals. I really couldn't ask for a better experience. Even though they're a bit out of my way, I can endorse them heartily. Worth the travel. These folks really know their business. read more

However, the experience I had at Brooklyn Heights Veterinary Hospital put me totally at ease. The staff there genuinely cared about my Petunia as if she was their own. Dr. Shapiro talked me through what they were going to do and then the results of everything. I felt so relieved when I spoke with her and knew that my girl was in good hands. The follow up with members of the team have been amazing. Dr. Thomson and the entire staff at BHVH are fantastic. I've been taking my dog here ever since I moved back to Brooklyn and have had nothing but positive experiences. For routine care, they're very transparent about how urgent any recommended courses of action are and the costs -- and I particularly appreciate how much emphasis Dr. Thomson puts on preventive care, and always feel like the full range of options is presented. I also had an emergency visit with them when my dog ate something she shouldn't have and there was some concern about a blockage. Not only did they take great care of her at the hospital, but Dr. Thomson and her staff stayed in touch over the weekend to make sure she was recovering and that I had guidance if she took a turn for the worse and had to go to an emergency provider. The bottom line is that I've always felt like my pet's wellbeing has been their highest priority and have always been comfortable leaving her in their care. Brooklyn Heights Veterinary Hospital is wonderful. I am so happy they are in my neighborhood. I highly, highly recommend them. They are the nicest, most thorough and caring vets. They are also very good and professional. The staff here truly cares about the wellbeing and health of their animal patients. They effectively handled a tooth issue for our cat. Their space is really pleasant and clean. We brought our cat, Pnut, in for a checkup and dental cleaning about two months ago. Dr. Balsam saw Pnut for the checkup. She was super nice and gentle with Pnut, who can get very scared of being at the vet. She offered great advice and was very patient and thorough about explaining Pnut's test results and recommended teeth cleaning procedure. Dr. Balsam gave very helpful recommendations around food, and other questions/concerns we had. The vet technician (sorry I don't have her name on hand) was also super nice and great with Pnut, very helpful. The office team at Brooklyn Heights Vet was also extremely efficient, nice, and professional - getting Pnut's old records from her prior vet; and answering questions. Dr. Thomson treated Pnut's teeth. She was very patient about explaining the procedure (teeth cleaning and procedure that involved some sedation) and steps involved. We were very happy with the results and Pnut seemed to be pretty happy upon her return home. Pnut seemed to have more energy afterwards as well, so maybe her tooth was bothering her before. The doctors and staff also followed up with us after Pnut's visit and treatment to see how Pnut was doing. I was really happy with the care Pnut received. I've been to four different veterinarians over about 20 of owning pets and BHVH is by far the best. Dr. Thomson and Dr. Venezia are knowledgeable, empathetic, and meticulous. My dogs are treated well and their unique personalities respected. I have a rescue dog who experienced quite a bit of trauma before I adopted her and the staff at BHVH have been so accommodating and respectful of her needs. Both doctors are thorough and explain everything to you in detail up front, most notably with regards to what procedures entail and the cost. To state it more plainly, this office does a wonderful job communicating with pet owners regarding all areas of pet care. They will also help you with filing an insurance claim if you have pet insurance. BHVH is a wonderful, absolutely top-notch place. With regards to pricing, they are not cheap, but I find them to be competitively priced. read more

This vet clinic is absolutely superb in caring, treatments, skill, knowledge, staff and communication. They LOVE animals and treat each one with amazing concern and comfort. Some dogs actually pull their leashes to get INTO the clinic! No kidding! I am impressed with how PERSONALIZED every sentence is, written or spoken! It is quite unsettling taking a 4.5 lb 10 year old dog in for teeth cleaning and extractions, which requires anesthesia, of course, but I feel confident that their team is so capable and their equipment so state of the art that the surgery will proceed flawlessly and it does! We always receive a thorough explanation of costs in advance and may choose treatments with no pressure. I chose this hospital because of yelp reviews. My dog is currently being treated by Dr. Balsam. She is very thorough and concern for my dog's well being. We are still in treatment...will update. This place is a scam and should be reported for fraud. I also made the mistake of only reading the good reviews and it has been one of the most painful experiences I have had with a healthcare provider. The vet and her technician blew my cat's condition way out of proportion and pushed numerous overpriced and superfluous procedures, treatments and tests that were only short term bandaid fixes. I was lucky enough to catch and reject many of them but not without undergoing serious stress for several days. After everything was done, I still found out that I overpaid for an antibiotic by three times the market value, plus a couple other procedures that they snuck in and didn't explain well. Worst part was the vet calling to defend her actions to me in a thirty minute uncomfortable phone call where she continuously yelled and accused me of being the problem. Not sure how anyone can entrust their pet to the care of someone as unstable as Dr. Balsam, whose chosen tactic is to defend her insecurities to patients rather than apologize or be open to constructive feedback. You would think that a practice that is so clearly concerned about money would want to attempt to keep as many new patients as possible by smoothing these situations over, rather than harass and insult their unhappy patients and push them away. It seems they cannot even be smart about the way they scam people. Also, don't expect a pleasant experience with their entitled and unprofessional staff. Even though you are paying for their service, any language or behavior that is in not overtly friendly or too straightforward, such as asking about why you have to wait so long, will be labeled as rude and give them the ammunition to treat you with uncalled for disrespect. read more

When I take my dog to Brooklyn Heights Vet I know that my dog is going to receive the same amount of love and compassion as if I were treating him myself. That is such a rare gift. Our cat was nearing the end of it's life a few years ago and we searched all over the city looking for the right vet. No one actually seemed to care. When we found Dr. Balsam we were finally at ease. She made the last year of his life as peaceful as we could have hoped for. Since then we've rescued a little pain in the butt Lhasa Apso who has brought with him all sorts of chronic issues. Both Dr. Balsam and Dr. Thomson have teamed up to get him to a healthy place. My confidence in both of them is more than I could hope for. I wish I had a primary care physician for myself that I liked this much! At this point, the whole staff at BHVH feels like family. I had never been to the office before, but took my cat in after noticing he wasn't feeling well. I feel that they took care to continually provide updates with thorough explanations to me and to ensure that my bb cat was comfortable at all times. Dr Thomson has been my vet for the 8 1/2 years I've had my dog, Ramsey. I've followed her from all of her previous clinics to now, her own. Although her clinic is inconveniently far away from my home and work I wouldn't even consider switching to a more conveniently located vet. And I can't say the same about my own doctor and other service providers. I just don't trust anyone else with my dog's care. Dr Thomson is attentive to Ramsey and listens very carefully to the information I give her. By doing this she's able, in a very grounded and reasonable way to put together symptoms and issues, figure out a course of action and, at least in all cases so far, a good diagnosis and treatment. And equally importantly, she's able to explain what's going on and what she thinks we should do about it in a way that is understandable and makes sense. I wouldn't say that Ramsey is unhealthy but he's definitely had his share of infections and random injuries and illnesses, all of which she's successfully treated with care and concern. In addition, she's gone out of her way when problems occur on weekends or evenings or when I'm away from home with Ramsey or at other equally inconvenient times. It was pretty clear when she first started treating Ramsey and it's super clear now, years later, that her first concern is always his health and well being. Like I said, I've change my own service providers but can't even dream of a situation where I would ever change vets. Can't possibly recommend more highly. read more
