I had some transportation issues and I needed to find a wine shop that was next to a subway station. I found Prospect Wine Shop by taking the F train to the 7th avenue stop. I walked in and found exactly what I wanted at the price that I wanted to pay. I found four bottles of De Forville Barbera D' Asti at $17.99 each. I hopped back on the train and returned home. De Forville Barbera is a very nice inexpensive bottle of wine. I plan to return and purchase some more. read more

I've been coming to Prospect Wine Shop for many years, and although there's many shops in Park Slope, I keep coming back to Prospect. The service is excellent, and staff are always friendly, helpful, and very knowledgeable, thanks Alex and Amy, always giving recommendations when I'm not sure what I want for an occasion. The shop has a large selection of wine, spirits, etc.. They have wine tastings on the weekend I stopped by today for Prosecco ( I cant believe I havent tried it yet), I explained my taste in wine, and champagne, was handed a perfect bottle of prosecco that was tasty, and refreshing..I highly recommend Prospect Wine Shop! read more

He's happy to suggest other wines based on what you're looking for and price point. During the warmer months, the tastings are outside in the back. I generally have had a very positive experience with Prospect Wine Shop. They have a big selection of wines at all price points, and a good selection of liquor at prices that tend to be a little less than some of the other local shops. Amy is very knowledgeable about wine and gives good recommendations, but I see how people might think she is talking down to them a bit. Honestly I think it is more a matter of her wanting to share her knowledge and it comes down to tone. On several occasions, they have ordered in cases of wine for me that they don't normally stock, and they will also order in trial bottles. They also will give a case discount even if you mix and match wines. read more

I usually try not to buy from random corner wine stores because selection is usually limited and prices are silly. Had to buy a bottle at the last moment so popped in here . These people have just exorbitant prices. Forked over a 18.99 for a bottle of Spanish garnacha that usually goes for 13-14 bux. If you look hard you can find it at 12 bux. So these people are getting away with 30-60% mark up vs competition. Good for them, I guess . But I wouldn't support that kind of business model read more

Personally, I rank my wine shops not on their prices alone, but other important factors: Friendliness/knowledge of the staff, wine selection, vicinity to my home, etc. This place gets an A on all factors. Plus, they have tastings every Saturday. But wait, I've been during the week and they've also had tastings. They also have a decent organic wine selection. My new year resolution. Drink more grappa. So today I venture to 7th avenue to look for a bottle of Jacopo Poli, the best grappa around, second only to his brother, Giorgio Poli, who by virtue of smaller productions and more traditional methods gets a better product. But...unless you are in the bassano area in north east Italy forget about ever finding a bottle of Giorgio Poli. I go in and ask for a bottle of grappa. Not many customers do, apparently. I am welcomed with a thank you! Thank you for...? I am thinking... Well "thank you" for reminding him how wonderful Poli grappa is, and to remind him to order more. Exactly two of each kind he would like to stock. He thinks that this Poli bottle, Sarpa is just incredible, you can see that he is tasting it with his eyes, he is clearly excited. I am too. He also think that i have a pretty cool, yet unusual new year resolution, and saluts me with saying that he'll see me in a couple of months for the next bottle. This is a great shop with a wonderful and diverse selection of wines and spirits. The staff is probably the best thing about the store, but the tastings are definitely in for a close second. The thing about wine and liquor stores is the sheer mass of labels and bottles and red and white can be daunting and confusing. Fortunately, the folks at Prospect Wine really know about every single wine they carry, their characteristics, and the kinds of situations and dishes that they can match, all without so much as a stutter! If you're ever in a mood to visit Brooklyn, or if you're interested in a good bottle of wine, make this place one of your first stops. You won't be disappointed (I hope...)! read more

I've only stopped in here once so far but will very likely be returning when I need a bottle of wine. The people who work in the shop were very friendly and helpful. I usually try a lot of different wines and am always open to suggestions, they pointed me towards some very tasty bottles. I wouldn't actually claim to know much about wine beyond the basics, and that I enjoy it; this shop seems to know their stuff and while they aren't as cheap as a sprawling store like Astor Wine I'd definitely prefer to head here. read more

This is the most literally named wine shop. It's in Prospect park. It's a shop that sells strictly wine (and port, and other offshoots of the wine genus). And it is THE shop to hit up when you are feeling particular, yet casual. When I dropped inot the shop, I was preparing for a road trip to see a friend in Ontario. Recalling her amazement at the array and value point of wines in the U.S. when she visited me a few years ago in San Diego, I knew that wine was one of the things I'd be carrying over the border when I went to see her. And I didn't want to just get her some random California cab, either. I decided I was going to get a little bit of something from all over the world, each at less than $15 to insure that special quality of darn good wines that are cheap enough so that you can actually drink them right away, rather than merely display them in a corner until the perfect pairing or occasion. Now, I'm not a total idiot in wines; I've read The Wine Bible and been on my share of tours and all, but in here, I was happy to ask for help. There were fewer specimens of wine standards (I.e. Pinot Noir, cabs) than I'd expected, which challenged me to venture into the relatively uncharted territory of Spanish tempranillos and South African Pinotages. I need not tire you with the details of my questions, which ranged from ignorant to downright philosophical (or so I'd like to think). Let's just say that after the help of two staff members, Internet use (to make absolute sure of the Canadian limit for customs free alcohol...the 3 liter limit ruled out my idea to get a huge jug of Carlo Rossi as a gag), and a whole lot of hemming and hawing finally led to a confident purchase of five wines of five varieties hailing from five different countries...for no more than 60-something dollars. It was the kind of purchase when I was able to walk away regretting and doubting nothing. This feeling of joyful assurance, I think, is essential when gifting spirits to a loved one. A woman named Amy rang me up after leading me through my final round of considerations. I especially admired that she stood her ground over a blend that she felt was truly representative of American red. When I mumbled something about pinot noir and a "pure" Cabernet, she gently but firmly schooled me by informing me that most wines are blends, but can still be classified under the name of the grape if they're at least 89% of the content. I realized she had to be so adamant about advocating the blend for a reason (because what's it to her what I buy, if it's not the truth about taste?) and quickly took her advice. At the register, she placed my picks into an electronic account so that I'll be able to access my little wine diary whenever I return to the store. She also handed me a flier showing me both what I'd missed and what I could look forward to in the way of tastings and events. I doubt my Canadian friend has popped the cork yet on even one of her gifts, probably determined to make the liquid gold last until the next time she knows an American is venturing North. But I don't have to wait for her reviews to know that I'm going to come here the next time I'm on the hunt for a wine matched to my mental states and desires at any given moment. read more

This is what I want from a wine shop, and Prospect Wines delivers it all: Convenient location (right by 7th Ave F train and across street from B67 bus stop), wide selection of reds and whites and a few liquors, and staff with a welcoming attitude and individual, thoughtful, deep knowledge of wines. Extras: organic and biodynamic wines. Excellent and inexpensive Austrian wines, both white and red. Best feature: Amy Louise Pommier. This woman can pair wine with food like nobody I've ever met. I do not know a heck of a lot about wine; my energies go into cooking, and I know that my meal will always be beautifully paired with a wine recommended by Prospect. If I'm having a tasting-style dinner, I go there in advance and describe the menu and get recommendations for all courses; then I let my guests know which wines to pick up! The Manhattanites and New Jerseyites are thrilled to not lug a bottle with them all the way. read more

I'm from New York but I live in Oregon now, and I recently had a friend in New York lose her job. Since I wasn't there to help her drown her sorrows personally, I wanted to have a few bottles of wine delivered to her in Park Slope. After semi-frantically calling a several different liquor stores to see if anyone could deliver within the next two hours (and was willing to deliver less than a case of wine per order!), I got to Prospect Wine Shop - they were super, super helpful and made it happen. I didn't really know what I wanted, so they picked out a few bottles for me - and added gift bags and a note. They even called my friend to make sure she was home before delivering (I didn't want to ask her myself, and run the surprise). Called them on the basis of Yelp reviews. I asked for a case of wine to be delivered to an apartment in Park Slope. The fellow on the phone said there were no deliveries for two or three days. What? So I asked him about wine. All he kept saying was, I need your credit card number. I asked again about what was available. He knew nothing. Unpleasant experience. I called Slope Cellars (also on the basis of Yelp) They were terrific. read more

Almost every time I go into Prospect Wine Shop, one employee or another is incredibly rude. I've never been to a liquor store in which the employees seem to judge the choice of a customer. I'm not talking about a simple recommendation. I'm speaking of blatant judgement of the customer's choices. The staff are just not friendly at all. I really wish this place would open under new management. This place is seriously in need of an attitude adjustment. One time I was there they couldn't accept credit cards because the system was down. You'd think that the staff would make an announcement and/or put up a sign at the door, but that didn't happen. After 10-15 minutes of making my selection, I proceed to the register and I try to pay with my credit card and I'm told that they can't accept them at that time due to the credit card machine being out of order. An awesome selection for a store this size. It's my preferred neighborhood wine shop and there are many in the Slope, I count at least 2 other (mostly) wine only retail establishment within a 6 block radius (Slope Cellars and Big Nose Full Body). I like that they have an organic/biodynamic section and the staff are very helpful. I've found the prices to be the best for the bottles I like (Malbecs, Jumilla, Rioja, Riesling, etc.) and they also have fun tastings but I guess what wine shop doesn't these days? read more

I wish I lived closer to this store so that it could be my local wine shop. I have never had a bad experience in this store and have always found a great wine for a great price. The only time I ever had any problems here was the day before New Years Eve and it was just too crowded for anybody to get any special treatment. They have a great variety of wines, from the cheap to the expensive, and the woman who works there - an owner? - seems to know about all of them. I once spent 15 minutes with her just chatting about Italian reds and was treated with respect and didn't feel like she was trying to just sell me anything. This is one of those stores where you can go in and tell them what you're in the mood for and be as vague and uninformed as can be, or be a complete wine geek, and be treated in a polite, professional manner. Contrast that to some other wine shops where you'll be either ignored or condescended to. They seem proud of their selections and want you to leave with the right wine. read more

There is a middle age lady there who is very helpful and if you ask about different taste and equivalent of any wine, she has a vast knowledge to help you. they have wine tasting as well. they wine from old wold and new world. they have some long island wines as well. Amy of Prospect Wines recently sold my husband and me the wines for our wedding and did us proud. She was able to help us select some delicious wines and bubbly that fell well within our price range. The selections to which she directed us were all interesting and thoughtfully chosen--nothing done merely by default. After a consultation at the store, Amy prepared for us a case of seven different wines to sample and choose from. Each one was distinctive and flavorful, and our selections were all a big hit at the wedding reception. While we were evaluating our choices and preparing to place our final order, Amy was proactive and diligent about communicating with us regarding the availability of each wine and making sure to get our order from us in time to reserve desired number of cases. In addition to Amy's thoroughness, I especially appreciated her palpable enthusiasm for the craft and curation of wines. She had stories and background to tell us about each selection, and she noted with pride wines produced by women vintners (we were equally proud to support two of them with our final selection). It is a pleasure to work with someone who treats their work as an art and not just a business. Talk about awful, rude service. I asked for a bottle of my favorite Riesling and I was told in a very condescending way 'did you even look at the Riesling section.?' And when I paid with my credit card and I took an extra second to take it out because I was about to pick a bottle of wine to purchase, I was told-- again in a very condescending way--'to take the card and go to wherever I was going next.' I've only been once so far ... but I'm a little obsessed with this place. Me and 3 friends walked in on Saturday night. Turns out we stumbled upon a French liquor tasting. The nicest girl gave us four or five liquors to try (all amazing), one of which she mixed with tonic to make into a little cocktail. Absolutely no pressure to buy, but I had to get the creme de framboise - so tasty and reasonably priced ($12). We then sheepishly asked for wine advice - they have a huge selection of upscale wines here, but we wanted something cheap. I expected the guy we asked to make fun of us, but he was so nice about it, and encouraged us to try a box of wine which worked out to be half the price ($17 or 18 for 4 bottles worth) and probably better tasting than the jumbo bottles we were eyeing. So basically, they're friendly, super helpful, and they have tastings on the reg. I love this place. read more

I guess if you know your wines or quickly grabbing some random bottle off their shelf it's fine... I don't know my wines but I was getting something for a loved one who prefers sweeter red wines. I asked the short older lady for a recommendation because I knew nothing. She then recommended a popular RIESLING to me and--with some common sense--noticed the clearish bottle didn't seem like a red wine because... it wasn't dark. So then I asked her probably a good 3 times during our conversation if this was a RED wine and all those 3 times she said "yes". I grew skeptic, made my way to the register and right before I was about to purchase I asked the register lady if it was a red wine. This lady said "no it's white". I don't know if the other lady was losing her hearing or what, but even after asking her to make sure it was a red wine 3 times she still said yes?!?! Anyways, enough ranting, the place is also a bit overpriced. Look online or elsewhere for better priced wines/spirits and customer service unless you're running last minute. read more

this place predates all of the boutique wine shops that have cropped up around the slope (and, more generally, brownstone brooklyn), and its a solid standby. they have a wide selection, and really, really knowledgable staff. one guy has, i swear, the exact same palate as me, or else is super attuned to what people want-- i can go in and ask for a recommendation based on something as vague as "citrusy, dry, hot summer day" and come out with a great (under $15) selection. he also introduced me to my favorite sparkling wine. bottom line: prospect wine may not be as hip as its newer competitors, but i still like it best. read more

Large selection of cheap wine. I would never buy something special there, however, as the staff appears to have limited knowledge. When I was checking out today the owner left me for another customer in the middle of the transaction, then the guy who was finishing up for the owner went to answer the phone.
