My partner and I used Heights Chateau to purchase wine and liquor for our wedding. Their approach to wedding alcohol can't be beat. They place an order for about 3x as much alcohol as you will likely need, then you are charged afterward only for what is consumed/opened at the event. Going into our wedding knowing we had extra of everything was huge. We had a wine tasting with the owner, who helped us make some great selections - he kept our budget in mind, even steering us toward a less-expensive white because he felt it went better with our menu. However, once it came to actually ordering and arranging delivery, we found Heights Chateau a bit difficult to communicate with. When we returned our extra booze two days after our wedding, the staff at the store accused us of chilling/submerging an entire case of white wine (this was an unopened box and we didn't even have the ability to keep that much wine in ice at our venue). While the manager we were working with did not charge us for this wine, it was an unfortunate situation with the store staff. Ultimately, working with Heights Chateau was a positive experience. Their expertise in finding unique wines, mindfulness of our budget, and flexible ordering policy certainly outweighs a few small negative customer service experiences. read more

Admittedly, I've only been in Heights Chateau twice so far, but it is abundantly clear that they are head and shoulders above all the other liquor stores I've visited in the area with regard to all the important criteria: Service: I think four different employees checked to see if I needed help as I browsed. I responded to the last guy, "Nah, this is just my first time here so I'm looking around." He responded, "Oh! Has no one shown you how everything is organized?" And then he proceeded to walk me around the store, and show me how all the wine is organized by region/country, and even color-coded to denote which bottles are organic, local, etc. Selection: Nearly every bottle of tequila, bourbon and gin that I looked for was on the shelves. Plus, they have the aforementioned world of wine at your fingertips. Prices: I don't know much about wine, but I tend to buy a lot of liquor. Their bottles seem to be at least a few dollars cheaper than nearly every other store I've been in within 20 blocks or so. And most importantly, free booze: According to one of the staff, they not only hold tastings on all Fridays and Saturdays, but occasionally at other times as well. Their wine selection is great, I especially love that they have their Oregon wines separated for easy access! But having a hand thrown at me as a gesture of acknowledgment is so rude and after the third instance, I've realized it's not a one off incident. There is never a "hello", "thank you" or "did you find everything?". Legit just get asked for ID. I want to support local and really gave this place the benefit of the doubt. This is my new favorite liquor store. They have a terrific selection of spirits, including some difficult-to-find items, and the prices are very reasonable for Brooklyn. There was a good selections of wines at Heights Chateau. I stopped by on a whim when I was in the area to get a cheap wine and some Cognac minis so I could make mulled wine. They did have a large selection of inexpensive wine which I appreciated considering my goal here. They also had some mid range wines that seemed like decent options if you were buying a bottle to drink. We were tempted by the huge range of wines from Greece and Lebanon and found them interesting enough to pick up an additional bottle. The staff was very honest. They gave their frank and honest opinion when you asked for them about wines. Terrible. Absolutely terrible. I called to order some liquor to be delivered for my boyfriends birthday tonight. The guy who answered the phone said they could maybe deliver around 630pm. Then he said maybe 4/430 but when I wasn't sure what I wanted and I asked for sizes and prices and chose two small reasonably priced bottles, he said they weren't going to take the time to deliver two small bottles. Excuse me?! I'm giving you MY money. You take forever to take my order and after it all you can't / wont deliver?! You should be much more accommodating. I didn't even say good bye. I just hung up. What I've noticed in wine stores around these parts (Brooklyn Downtown area) is that there is great service but few options. Consider the alternatives to Heights Chateau: Smith & Vine, Brooklyn Wine Exchange and the random smatterings of Liqour stores. They all have different varieties but the stores are on the smaller side and thus can only hold five or so types of different wines, usually only one in the price range you're looking to spend. Heights Chateau, on the other hand... 1. Great Service: You walk in the door and whoever is behind the register welcomes you and if they're free, asks if they can help. Say why you need it, perhaps a dish you are making that you need it for (Coq Au Vin or Red Wine Chocolate Cake) or one you're pairing it with and BAM! you're following the sales person through the aisles right to the perfect bottle that you didn't even know you were looking for. They are always friendly, polite, and never look down at you if you ask for the cheapest option. And if you want to simply peruse, you can spend an hour going up and down the aisles at your pleasure. 2. Amazing Selection: There are at least ten varieties from various countries and price points of every type of wine or liquor you could look for. The wines/liquors are selected carefully as you can tell by never opening a bad bottle of wine from this store (seriously, I have never regretted a purchase!). 3. Free Tastings: At least half of the times I have gone into Heights for a bottle, I have been offered free tastings of vodka, whiskey, wine, you name it! They never pressure you to buy but, every time I have walked away with a second bottle in my bag. Finally, 4. Free Delivery. (no description necessary). A better wine store, a Vino-phile could not ask for! And in this area, that's saying something. read more

My wife and I used Heights Chateau to supply the alcohol (all but beer) for our wedding, and we had a tremendous experience working with them. The highlights: (1) They welcome you to a long wine tasting to make sure can get what you like, offer very helpful suggestions, and walk through a number of questions to determine what to get and help estimate how much of each thing to purchase. (2) They deliver direct to the venue (ours was in Greenpoint). And (3) they allow returns of unopened and undamaged bottles, which means that we didn't have to fret about either not ordering enough to satisfy our guests or ordering way to much and being stuck with a ton of excess inventory. LOVE this wine store. There are lots of wine stores in this neighborhood, but Heights Chateau is simply the best of them all. They have a very thoughtful selection of good wines at reasonable prices. The staff is not just knowledgeable but also passionate on the topic of wine. In fact, they will talk your ear off if you get them started. Let them--you'll learn a lot. I needed help bringing the wine to a dinner my friend was making--halibut & prosciutto, not an easy match. After lots of talk about the food, they came up with the idea of a gewurztraminer. I sure wouldn't have come up with that on my own. The guy insisted I tell him how it worked out. At dinner, I found out my friend had substituted tilapia for halibut. When I came back to the store, the guy seemed really disappointed--tilapia really isn't much like halibut in flavor, so all that calculating had been for nothing. I tried to cheer him up by letting him know we liked the wine on its own and the main thing was we'd had a good time, but he still seemed sad. They take this stuff seriously! read more

As a customer who knows just enough about wine to be both annoying and exhausting, I am particularly appreciative when I receive knowledgeable and patient assistance. Chris listened to my preference of grape, region and price and he not only gave me suggestions that spoke to my preferences but also added suggestions of similar profiles that I appreciated and in a way that wasn't pushy. I am so used to being steered towards the preference of the staff of a wine shop or to a bottle at least $10-15 more than what I specified - it was a treat to have someone listen to me and guide me accordingly! I have never been to the shop. They have had some rarities show up on their stock list that interested me. Service was great. One phone call and they pulled out the only two bottles they had, and delivered it to mid town free of charge. (Magnums of Chateau Vignelaure 2005 cab syrah blend) They have a lot of interesting wines in stock and are helpful in placing special orders. I stopped by the store, he knew what we generally like, but said "give me a few days to think about this and I'll call you". Two days later my phone rang. We were also in Downtown Brooklyn for a meeting, far away from any of my normal wine buying spots. I walked through the door at Heights Chateau and explained what I needed.
