One of my primary concerns was that my $14,000 retainer check was deposited before I ever signed an engagement agreement or fee agreement. That immediately raised concerns for me. After ending the representation, I was charged over $1,000 for what I believe amounted to approximately one meeting and photocopying of my documents. I disputed the charges, requested that the invoice be revised, and attempted to resolve the matter directly. I was unable to reach a resolution, so I filed a complaint and fee dispute with the Oregon State Bar. My understanding is that the firm chose not to participate in the fee dispute process. I also became uncomfortable with the repeated discussions about the firm's use of AI in legal work and ultimately decided this firm was not the right fit for me. I cannot recommend this firm based on my experience. I encourage anyone considering hiring Rugged Law to carefully review the fee agreement before paying a retainer, ask detailed questions about billing practices, and make sure they are completely comfortable with the representation before proceeding.

From the beginning, she assured me that a change of venue was possible and charged me a substantial amount for what she described as research and preparation related to that issue. There were repeated delays, changes in direction and a lack of follow-through on key actions I hired her to perform. Without my knowledge or consent, she consulted with other attorneys I had prior relationships with and billed me thousands of dollars for those communications. I was also billed for work that did not advance my case in a meaningful way. Communication was inconsistent, and at times unprofessional. I experienced conduct that did not reflect the level of professionalism or focus I expected from legal counsel handling a serious matter. Overall, I paid a massive amount of money based on specific representations about what would be done, and those expectations were not met.
