First of all, I guess this is the way things are going these days (CAUTION: I am an old), but I didn't realize hospitals have these fancy mall-style food courts. I remember when your only options at a hospital were an institutional cafeteria that was open four hours a day and a bunch of vending machines, but Northwestern has a plethora of trendy dining choices. So, Protein Bar, which is a place and not a thing: I'm inherently distrustful of healthful fast food, and especially of stuff like smoothies and blends and anything made out of egg white. Damned, however, if this isn't a decent and nutritionally sound option for folks on the go; the smoothies were very satisfying and the egg white scrambles were unexpectedly filling. It's a bit pricey, and nothing that I'd make part of my regular routine, but it was a pleasant surprise. read more

Very, very healthy. I'll be straight up, it's so healthy that it occasionally borders on bland, which keeps it from being 5 stars. The restaurant is run well, although we're talking about a cafeteria type setting so don't expect too much. I'm a fan of their salads, and their super seven mix is quite good although the inclusion of iceberg lettuce is a bit lame. This place had a really good Greek salad. It's located in Northwestern Hospital. My mother had lung surgery so I was in the hospital for days and this was one of the places that I decided to eat at. The young ladies in the restaurant were so nice so pleasant & welcoming and suggested different salads that they liked, so I could get a feel of what I wanted. I've been itching to check out the Protein Bar from the moment I heard they were putting one in at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Protein Bar offers a healthy take on fast food which is a welcomed addition to the hospital food options. It seems like everyone else was as interested as me as the line when I came by at 10 to noon was out the door. Fortunately, it moved super fast and I think it was really helpful that they were handing out menus and moving people along. The wait for a raw juice was a little longer as they gotta prep those as you order and squeezing all the goodness outta those fruits and veggies takes awhile. As I wanted to try the juice I had to resign myself for the extra wait but was glad I did because the Hi-5 was a sweet mix of pineapple and kale-y goodness. The Vegan original bar-rito was somewhat disappointing. I'll admit a couple years in the Mission district of San Francisco spoiled me on burritos. At least the bar-rito doesn't really attempt to go toe-to-toe and changes things up with a quinoa filling and whole wheat tortilla. Still the beans are under seasoned and the rest of the fillings a little bland. I wish the protein bar came with an accompanying salsa bar. Still, the juice is awesome and their menu of other signature drinks looks appealing as well. I'd stop back by for a Bucktown Green Tea or Wrigley Peeled in their slower hours (if they have any) but not as eager to jump back into their other food offerings. read more

Very quick and friendly service, order at the counter and they call you by name. The superfood salad is absolutely divine and nourished my body in all the right ways without sacrificing taste. Not a huge fan. I've been to a few different locations. Service has always been wonderful, but the salads are always bland and boring. Basically a giant bowl of lettuce and a half a cup of other ingredients. The chicken is always dry and in the KALE CEASAR I got spring mix with about 6 kale leaves in it. When I am too lazy to prepare and pack my lunch, Protein Bar is one of my go-to places. I absolutely love their chicken chili with parmesan, it's super tasty and delicious. Pretty unhappy , I've been going to the one on lake and I've accumulated two frequent customer cards, well this one apparently doesn't take them for blended drinks even though it clearly states on the card they do and the other location wouldn't take them period! Why have frequent cards then! AND THE MANAGER is so rude! When The nice guy at register asked her to honor it she practically ripped his head off and mine! Although the food is fresh and good, customer service is the worst. Most employees are very rude. Sometimes they don't even wear gloves when making food and don't wash their hands before putting gloves.They make mistakes making the order most of the time. They don't talk, just throw the food on the counter. Employees would never place the food in the bag. After asking to place food in the bag, they just throw the bag at you with very bad attitude. It happens all the time. In addition to above problems, they charged for two salads yesterday. I brought to their attention, they did not even apologize. While visiting Chicago on business in January of 2014, I came across several Protein Bar locations. This one was just a couple of blocks from our hotel. I "parked" in the loading zone leaving my buddy in the car to go in and get some fresh juices and a Denver burrito for him. Extremely fast and friendly service. The juices are some of the best I've ever had honestly. I love the flavor combinations. Ginger in the green and strawberry with beet is surprising and refreshing. read more

A few times I have had smoothies or juices - their kale juice with I think pineapple is really delicious! It is one of the few places you can really go to get very healthy food very quickly. The Loop'd smoothie is amazing, as are all their other smoothies. They offer almond milk! I have ordered from here before and never had any issues. This morning I decided I'd get a protein smoothie before work so I ordered at 7:40. I waited about 10 minutes and then asked one of the employees when my order will be out she said mine is next. People who ordered after me got theirs. The manager comes up front and says "you didn't say anything to me I was out here putting out orders" I said I mentioned it to your coworkers...he said he would give me a refund. I said I don't want a refund I want my smoothie so I can go to work. I ended by saying I could make this in 5 minutes. Anyways, yeah they pissed me off. The food here is tasty and pretty creative for a place that focuses on putting as much protein in your body as possible. The salads are great, as are their quinoa bowls. Usually the salads last me two meals - which is good since they are on the pricier side for a "fast food" salad. They also have fresh squeezed juices and smoothies that are delicious. Just be careful when you are looking at the menu because some items are high fat and calories in addition to being high in protein. read more

I was excited to find out they had opened a new location inside Northwestern Hospital. I had coupons mailed to me to try their new fall menu. So I decided to do so at a new location. This place is small and has a few seats inside. I made the mistake of coming at 1pm thinking it would have slowed down. Today I tried the backyard bbq bowl. It was good but I fear the consequences of eating kale. It was a a little sweet and a little bland. I am glad I tried it but probably not going back to get it again. read more

This is a great place to go to for lunch since they have many convenient locations which is good for me (someone with a busy schedule). Some thing to stray away from is getting a smoothie like the pb and j as well as a bowl or burrito if you won't be very active for the next few hours, the food sits in your stomach and you feel gross the rest of the day. Overall they have great (not to mention healthy) food and are never super busy so it's a great if you just want to get in and out quickly. read more

He recommended the Mexacalli bowl and it was very good. First time trying Protein Bar food (I am definitely a fan of the smoothies :)) I got the Chicken Quinoa Bowl with Black beans and I added avocado. I definitely enjoyed it, I loved the hint of spice it had in it. I was expecting a loose quinoa to cover the bottom of the bowl but it was premixed (don't know if that's the best word) and I appreciated that because it had balanced flavor throughout. Grab'N' Go anyone?? The best quick lunch. Its so much better to eat a lunch that isnt just junk food. You can bring it back to your office. My concern with then is that they often do not wrap the wraps well so that it falls apart before you've finished eating it.
