Finding the restaurant itself was easy, but parking was another story -- the one‑way street and…read moresmall lot made it a challenge. When we walked in, the cashier immediately asked whether we were dining in or taking out. We chose to dine in. We ordered the roast beef sandwich and the pastrami sandwich, along with potato pancakes. They brought out a full assortment of pickles and pickled vegetables. Unfortunately, they only offer one diet option: Dr Pepper Zero, no other diet sodas from the fountain or in bottles. The potato pancakes were a disappointment -- mostly batter with very little shredded potato. The pickled vegetables also lacked flavor and didn't really taste pickled. Our table wasn't cleared at any point during the meal, and the waiter stood nearby waiting for us to finish, which felt a bit uncomfortable. The desserts looked amazing, but we were too full to try them. We also couldn't take anything to go since we had plans for the rest of the day and didn't want it sitting in the car. Next time, we'll come back specifically to try the desserts.

I am from Philadelphia and grew up on AUTHENTIC NYC style Jewish Delis. I moved to B'more in 2015…read moreand was shocked how lacking the Deli scene was; especially considering it's Jewish population. When Essen FIRST opened I was relieved...finally a solid Deli. However, as you know it slowly deteriorated until I stopped patronizing it. I was initially happy to see it changed ownership. Reading the reviews however, it seems it is continuing to be SUBPAR! The Management apologies are scripted(cut & paste) for goodness sakes!! I think I'll pass! Fortunately, when I go back home periodically, I have several solid authentic options.

One of my close friends and I used to come here every week for happy hour. Over the years, though,…read morewe had heard that the place had gone downhill, so on a whim, my husband and I decided to give it a try. It was very quiet, with only two other customers there, but from the moment we took our seats, we were glad we came. The menu was expansive, and since it was Taco Tuesday, there were several taco options to choose from. The bartender was great and did an excellent job with everything we ordered. Out of everything we tried, the nachos and Long Island iced tea were my favorites. We will definitely be back. I'm glad I didn't let the passing years and less-than-great reviews keep me from trying this place again.

On this night they had a game activity going on as well. There was music and bar with seats. I wouldnt recommend this place if you do not have patience when there is a function or large crowd. I originally sat at a table with a couple of people, orders were placed for food that took about an hour plus. However, I ordered a salad and calamari and unfortunately with 2 hours being there I never received my food. I went to the bar and ordered 2 drinks and they too took about 45 minutes to an hour to receive. On the bright side I enjoyed the environment and the drinks were good. I just wouldnt recommend coming possibly on a day where a function is going on.

Our host recommended this establishment for terrific seafood. She was not wrong! I ordered the…read moreSeafood platter so I could try a variety- cream crab soup, jumbo shrimp, lobster tail, crab cakes, salmon. First, I am very particular about salmon. This was the best I've ever had! All excellent! My companions had the shrimp potato skins- huge and scrumptious, grilled cheese with crab, fish & chips. Portions are very generous. We all got to go containers. Service- exceptional. We were there at 2 pm, so not a rush time. Our waitress was friendly, just the right amount of attentiveness. She even laughed at my jokes :) The layout was nice, giving space between tables and even some private booths available. We didn't feel crowded and could enjoy conversation.

We ordered the shrimp and grits, oysters rockefeller, shrimp sandwich, french toast, crab cake benny, a coffee cocktail, and regular coffee. Overall, everything was just okay, not terrible, but not something I'd rush back for either. The biggest letdown was the shrimp and grits. It came with what looked like a spoonful of grits, which was disappointing. We mentioned it to our waitress, and she brought us some extra grits to go, which I appreciated. The crab cake benny was decent, but the crab cake itself didn't have much flavor. The $12 coffee mocktail also wasn't worth the price in my opinion. We ended up ordering the beignets for dessert, but had to send them back because they were raw in the middle. The service was okay but it could definitely be better. I will say they tried to fix the issues we brought up, which I appreciated. I've been to the O'Donnell Street location a few times, and honestly, I've had much better food and drinks there. If you're in the area and have been wanting to try this location, I'd still say give it a shot because everyone has different experiences. It just didn't wow me this time. Ratings: * ambiance: 8/10 * food: 6/10 * drinks: 4/10 * service: 5/10

Nope! This place…read moreused to be a gem. I would visit the downtown location for breakfast and lunch. I've been visiting this location for breakfast exclusively. No more! I visited on 4.28.2026 for breakfast. I ordered a side of breakfast potatoes, bacon, scrapple. The breakfast potatoes tasted like the old lukewarm potatoes you get from a hotel lobby. Six bucks!! The bacon was ok. Just ok. The scrapple was good. The hot tea (Lipton Tea Bag)... chef's kiss!! I'm good on this place. I had a great run w them for many years.

The food is served via cafeteria style in a quick fashion. You are able to watch your food being cooked which has its positive and negatives. The negative is the kitchen needs a full deep cleaning along with the staff T shirts which has clear evidence of grease and food stains. The drink included with the platter is tea, coffee or a soft drink. None of the bottled drinks are included as signs are posted on the refrigerator doors. I explained to the cashier that I don't drink coffee at all, I only drink tea for a sore throat and I don't drink soft drinks for breakfast. I was inquiring for an additional drink option as I only purchased the breakfast platter because the drink was included. There are no options as I purchase a bottled orange juice to drink instead. There is open seating available with TV to watch while you eat. There is also a bakery and deli counter inside as well. Pretty good parking available outside. I will likely return but, hopefully some feedback will bring about some changes.
