Our hike was a loop that took us through a waterfall, woods and an overlook. The hours are limited: weekend hours only and it closes at 5 pm. It is part of a land trust. I recommend this preserve for hikers, nature lovers and those that love exploring trails off the beaten path.

This is a nice park that I have driven by 1000s of times and never really noticed…read more Out during COVID, after a long work day and then afternoon errand day, my best friend and I enjoyed a lightly sprinkling afternoon break under the pavilion at Jones Farm Park. Since it was sprinkling out, there were only a few people out. A man BF knew walking his beautiful pup, Lilly and a man and his son who were fishing. I asked them what they caught and they caught a turtle! I was happy they caught and released the little critter. Or maybe it was big, I didn't get a chance to see it. Tom and Lilly were a delight to talk to - well Lilly didn't talk or bark either. And the pavilion and two ponds were a nice respite from the long day both BF and I had. There were ample garbage cans, nice walking/running paths, maybe (I wasn't sure) a free little library (it was empty making it hard to tell what it was), the pavilion with picnic tables and plenty of seating and lots of geese. Why no 5th star? Tom told us the goose poop was cleaned up recently, but it really was not cleaned all that well under the pavilion. Do check out Jones Farm Park, it is really pretty and peaceful. Looks like a decent spot to fish, too!

The park is essentially a nice series of paths connecting Four Mile Post to Carl T Jones with some retention ponds, benches, and pavilions to provide some "natural" space to counteract the sprawl of the shopping centers next door. (And if you doubt that this is sprawl, ask me about what this area looked like when I was growing up and Carl T Jones was new...). We parked in the small lot around 10am on a Saturday. My mom said that we were lucky to find a spot since the lot is often full in the morning and evenings, to the point that they've already expanded parking and it's not enough. We meandered along the paths, letting our toddler be amused by the gravel and flowers, while others fished in the ponds and walked with purpose. We saw some great birds, including a red-winged black bird. It's close enough to the greenway to be a lovely addition to my runs whenever I visit my folks.

Sharon Johnston Park is a park we frequented growing up. Back then it did not offer all that it…read moredoes these days; however, they have always hosted a Madison County Youth Fishing Rodeo every May. The lakeis stocked with catfish, bream, bass and crappie. Other annual events are a classic car show and a fall festival. I always knew the park honored Sharon Johnston but didn't know anything about Sharon. Turns out she was quite the "dare devil" and was a stunt pilot who tragically died when her biplane crashed during an air show at the South Weymouth Air Station at the young age of 31. She lost control of the single engine plane during a series of spins and crashed. Her family donated the land to the community in her name because it was a place she loved dearly, where her father built a lake, worked to conserve wildlife, and taught his children about the wonders of nature. Since the 70s the park has really grown! Now it includes an arena (think horse arena - not concert venue), a marked walking/running course, rental pavilions, a playground with pavilion, Olympic sized swimming pool, campground for tent and RV camping, frisbee golf, and a shooting range. It's a cool park with some neat rustic touches like an old wooden carriage and log cabin styled structures.

Have a boat? Go to Smith Lake? Duskin Point is your friend…read more I'm not sure what my family would do without Duskin. When we need gas, we pop over and the friendly staff fill 'er up quickly and usually remember our names so we don't have to do a thing- a bill just comes in the mail. When we used dry storage, they were the place to go, and they always did an excellent job winterizing and de-winterizing the boat. If we need a repair, they handle it- they will actually drive to your dock (or stranded location if you get cell signal and can call them) and check it out for you. They even install boat lifts for your dock. There isn't too much to say about Duskin Point- because they keep it simple. Boats, jet-skis, fishing boats, related repairs/equipment... they'll handle it. And all with some lovely southern charm!
