For four years, I'd rented a space at the Public Storage on Hempstead Turnpike in Bethpage. The one with the lighthouse out front. I was happy with that place, and was sorry to leave when the rent reached a point where it no longer made sense to keep paying so much for a unit I could find somewhere else for less. That was a couple of years ago, and I'm once again looking for a storage space. The best deal I'd found online was at this other location, right by the train tracks in Hicksville. So I made a reservation online, chose my move in date, received confirmation by text, email, and voicemail. Everything was good to go, until I showed up with my tape measure in hand to check out the space. When I walked in, I waved hello to the guy behind the counter and said I was interested in renting a storage unit. He was not exactly friendly. "Do you have a reservation?" Without looking up from his computer. "Yes." "At this location?" Still not even looking at me. "Yes, but before we do that, can I ask a question?" No response, so I continued. "What's the easiest way to turn left into this parking lot? See, where that white car is now, coming from that direction?" (Old Country Road is busy, and there is a turning lane after the entrance, which puts you onto a narrow kind of alley, running between the building and the elevated LIRR tracks. While waiting to turn, you are facing cars in the oncoming turning lane. Then you go to the back of the lot, make a u-turn and come back, make a right and then another into the lot. It didn't seem ideal for making multiple trips with a van, and I wondered if this employee might have a helpful suggestion.) Wrong. "How long have you had a license?" Seriously, that was his response. Not said in a joking or playful way, but with contempt. When a customer asks a question, it is an opportunity to engage in conversation and make the sale, or just establish a friendly rapport. This guy didn't seem interested in any of those things. In fact, he seemed annoyed that I was standing there. So I smiled and said, "Thank you," and turned to leave. I figured I'd come back another day when there was a different employee working who might be more pleasant. Then I turned back. "What is your name?" "You don't have a reservation." Spoken as an accusation. "Yes, I do." I did, and would gladly have given him my reservation number, or my name, or my phone number, or whatever information he needed to help him find it, except he never asked. "You don't have a reservation. There is nothing on the board." I'm not sure what that meant, but it implied that I was lying. What was puzzling was that, even if a customer didn't have a reservation, shouldn't his response have been, "No problem, I'll be happy to help?" Isn't his job to provide customer service, with the goal of renting out a space? Also, there is a difference between, "You don't have a reservation," and "I'm sorry, I can't seem to find your reservation." One of those sentences blames the customer, the other admits the possibility that the mistake could be his. Again, I smiled and said, "Thank you," and left. It felt like his antipathy was personal. Acute. Focused specially on me, for whatever reason. At first. Then I heard from the two guys at a nearby storage company that they routinely hear complaints about him from customers who came from that place, to theirs. As I did. So perhaps it is just his manner, and he treats everyone with the same rudeness. To paraphrase Freud, sometimes a cigar is just a dick. About an hour later, the same salesman who left a voice message confirming my reservation called again to follow up on... my reservation. Which I clearly did have, or he would not have called. Twice. "Glad you called. Let me tell you what happened when I went there in person." After hearing a condensed version of the above, he said, "Well, he said that you were rude to him!" "Of course he did. Because I asked his name, so he knew I was going to complain and figured he'd get there first." By the way, Public Storage telephone salesman, "Our guy said you were the one who was rude," is not exactly sterling customer service, either. The proper response should have been, "We apologize for any rudeness you may have encountered from one of our employees." The point which ended the phone call was this: I'd made the reservation, scheduled the move in date, and was prepared to book the storage space. It was practically a done deal. Until that rude guy cost them the sale, and lost them a customer. read more

I've had a unit there for decades and I never had a problem. Access was always easy and I especially like the new wireless entry using the phone app. I walked into the office a few weeks ago to request a second unit...I'm getting ready to move out of my apartment and I wanted all of my stuff in one place. I was so lucky to walk in and start working with Keila. She was wonderful to deal with, not only friendly and very helpful...but also very knowledge. She reviewed my current situation and realized it made more sense to upgrade to a much larger unit. It's taken a lot of work to consolidate everything, but it ends up saving me money in the long run. Worst customer service I have ever had. Just charged my card for no reason. No one is ever there, A/C is not on and carts are always locked up. Call and they tell you that the office is closed. No sign telling you this. Stick with Safeguard storage, mybe less locations, but the drive is worth it! Stay away from Public storage! read more

It's clean and the lights inside come on automatically. Outside at night it is VERY DARK, no lights on. It seems to be uncertain if you can borrow their carts as there are carts there, but the workers don't have the keys. The manager had no solutions regarding having carts available, blamed a customer who took a key home. The darkness at night is a real security issue. BYOC Bring your own cart. read more

Stood outside for 45 minutes, calling multiple numbers that were listed on the website and the door with no answers. No one was at the desk. Doors were locked. No note was left. Tried getting a key for the locked up moving carts/flats so we could move stuff up to my unused, brand new unit. No one was on site to help us with anything, as well as nothing being posted. Hours were clearly marked and we were there during those hours. Ended up going to the Garden City location and though a bit more expensive--SO worth it. Also, after being asked 8-10 times if I wanted to reserve a space, and not letting me get off the phone without reserving, and after repeatedly saying "no, I'd like to research it more" to no avail, I politely said, "Please don't make me say it again, I do not want to reserve at this time", to which they hung up on me. read more

God-awful customer service and customer-communication skills. The guy at this location agreed that Public Storage should do more to notify their customers of due rent...considering they do have my mailing and email addresses. But they are certainly happy to send an email about the "late fee" they will charge you. It's even posted on their website under "notifications tab", which says "we will send a monthly invoice". But I haven't gotten a monthly invoice to my house, email or spam folder...but you best guess I get the invoice of my late fee. I feel that Public Storage is more intent of getting you to pay a late fee, than clear communication about upcoming due rent. The first of every month is not enough..we are living in the information age. Communication is key. So, speaking with the man at this location..agreeing that a simple email about upcoming due rent would go a long way to satisfy their customers, didn't necessarily care that I was pissed and told him I would be closing my account. Guess that these are the situations you get when you are a customer at Public Storage. Hah! P.S. Do not go here!! I used to have a unit there. The lights would always go off before I was done and had to walk up aisle to trigger motion sensor every 15 minutes. Shouldnt be like that if youre spending 168 dollars or more. Otherwise the desk people were helpful. read more

Awful experience tonight trying to set up my account. I reserved a unit about 2 weeks ago. Someone called to confirm when i would be coming in so he could meet me and go over everything. I called and left a message (the office was closed) and said i would be there on the move in date at around 5:30 but may be a few minutes late due to traffic. Two days ago I got another call to confirm my appointment and to call if I needed to change anything. I did not call back, since I did not have questions. Then yesterday I received an email with confirmation number and reminder. Today I get there before 6 and the doors were LOCKED. Two other people were outside waiting and said they had been waiting for over a half hour. The office is due to close at 6! Finally someone comes up a few minutes before 6 and i tell him i have a reservation and he says "sorry were closed" even though it still wasn't 6 yet. Then he said i didn't have a reservation. He pulled up my info and said that someone called and i didn't call back so they cancelled it. HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO CONFIRM THIS APPOINTMENT?! And the woman didn't say to call back! So i do not have a storage unit now and had to leave with the items i intended to store. This guy was not helpful at all and the whole operation is disorganized. ZERO STARS! read more

I have been a long time customer of public storage and at the hicksville location Gina and Tiffany are very professional and are always sweet and willing to help and always have smiles on there faces . And the building is always clean and neat and there is always a push cart available for me to use . I would recommend anyone that is moving and needs a storage bin to use Hicksville location. read more

The staff is very rude, especially the manager! You will definitely have better luck any and everywhere else.
