Suddenly, they feel that the value of their storage units has increased to a higher rate than their competition across the street. Laughable. Don't rent here, Hawaiian Self Storage is cheaper, with 24/7 access. What a rip off. read more

If you purchase property (theft, damage, etc) insurance from them make sure you document EVERY item you place in storage otherwise it's a complete waste of money. I have a unit that's been broken into twice now (locks are bypassed because thieves consistently bypass the locks by prying open the doors). No one is ever charged or caught. They will NOT change anything to increase security or make any security adjustments to my storage locker so it can't be broken into again in the same manner. What people say about price hikes is totally true as well. It just keeps going up and up.... The one bright light is Donna, the manager who's really courteous and friendly. But there's only so much she can do to make things right. read more

I think the staff are outstanding and more than accommodating to helping me find the right size unit at the right price. They are kind and sincere. In this day of uncertainty there are always exceptions. We could not get movers to vacate the unit on September 30 they actually were able to move us out of the storage on early October 1st. I was very disappointed that they charged the complete month of October. When speaking to customer service, they could only state that it is there policy to charge for the entire month even though the unit was vacated and cleaned early on the 1st. BUYER BEWARE for prospective Public Storage customers - certainly NOT recommended to friends and family :( The comments from Aron N. and many others here are true: the business model relies on surge pricing (applicable at any time) that favors only the company. The local staff and facilities are great; however, they claim only corporate can dictate and make changes...corporate in turn will not reply or indicate they go by the market rate (but never reduce when your market's rate goes down). My story: - Jan 22: sign up happily for a locker. Great service. - May 31: receive an e-mail that my rate will go up 193% on July 1. The price increase would take place 5 months after I first signed up. - June 3: local staff say it's normal for a 10-15% increase after 6 months, but this was very high - they recommend calling corporate customer service. - June 4: call live-answer customer service line (1-866-684-6436 - avoid the automated one of 1-800-567-0759) whose staff are trained to deflect your queries and reinforce the positioning of surge pricing at any time, and direct you to leave a message for the "executive line". - June 24: finding another storage place; still no answer from Public Storage. - June 25: filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and learned that this negative practice is common across the country. Different local staff indicated that it's normal to see an increase after 6 months and then again every 12 months. A call back to the corporate customer service line confirms the same message as well as a lack of options, and a claim that the timing just so happened to be close to the annual audit the property has (which seems to be untrue according to other renters here who've seen increases at different times of of the year). Account closed because I can't afford the 193% rate increase, as well as the prospective of another such increase (according to staff) 7 months from now - i.e. 12 months after I opened the account. Despite pleas to work out an increase (even 20% at a time), Public Storage appears to rely solely on its surge pricing practice without any regard for negotiation with the customer. This was my first time using a storage facility. Hau and Donna in the office made the process so easy. They could not have been more gracious, knowledgeable and helpful. Hau gave me a personalized tour of possible storage spaces available. She later showed me how to access the elevator and the easy way to put the lock on the storage door. Donna helped with my registration forms, activating the Public Storage app, and changing my assigned storage unit to another one (the first unit unexpectedly had a pillar in it). The two ladies could not have provided better customer service. As for the facility itself, it was centrally located, clean, climate-controlled, and with lots of parking. I know I made the right decision in selecting Public Storage - and especially the Waialae location knowing that Hau and Donna would be there to help, if I ever had a problem. read more

The location is close and convenient as it is right by the freeway onramp. The storage facility is well maintained and parking is ample. The staff is friendly and professional. They ensure that you understand how to access your contents and explain all of the options such as storage insurance that you can purchase as an option. WARNING - DO NOT RENT HERE!!!!!! This is Public Storage's business model: A. You agree to a rental rate, but when you arrive they tack on a whole slew of mandatory fees, mandatory insurance, etc. Kinda shady, but ok you think, probably expected from a self-storage company. B. This is the BIG problem. After about 3 or 4 months, they will simply raise your rents. I rent two units here. One of my units' rent was just increased by $75/month. If you are not paying attention, you may not even notice as everything is done via direct withdrawal. They do this because they know that it will cost you more to hire movers and relocate all your stuff to a different storage facility. So you are stuck paying a rental amount that you never agreed to! Very unethical (and questionably illegal, as one would expect consumer protections here from such unscrupulous businesses). Bottom line: The local staff are friendly (don't blame them), but the payment processing all occurs at mainland corporate office, where they can simply begin charging you any amount they want. If you rent here, just know that you will probably pay about double what you had originally agreed upon within a year! read more

Today, I walked to the Public Storage facility on Waialae Ave near the University of Hawaii to inquire about their facility. Like many, I had no clue as to how their system. I was helped by Hoku Simanu who so patiently explained to me everything I needed to know about this facility. Then, she took the time to show at least 5 different storage units. I made a choice based primarily because this excellent service I received from her today. I'll definitely refer Public Storage and Hoku to others in the future. read more

I booked everything online and it was super easy. When you book online it gives you the option to view the unit prior to paying for it. So I went today for my check in day and the staff was very accommodating and let me view the unit to ensure I selected the right size. The location is super clean and the staff is super nice. Public Storage. I know, boring right? But that's exactly what you want in a storage facility. The last thing you want is excitement, and you don't get that at the Public Storage on Waialae under the freeway. What you do get is a clean secure warehouse with plenty of storage units in all sizes. It seems like there is a storage place on every corner, so why did I choose this one? The location is close to my house and the rates were reasonable. By signing up on the internet, I was able to secure a cheap rate for the first month. I recommend everyone follow this procedure. There is no risk. You will be given a "move in date" which is simply the date on which you can come to examine the unit. If you don't find the unit satisfactory, you can cancel without penality. When I came to the facility on my move-date, I was helped by a friendly young woman name Gina. (Actually her name is really not Gina. Gina was my high school sweetheart who dumped me a week before my Senior Prom. But I can't remember the name of the woman at Public Storage so I will just call her Gina. Let me tell you, she was a lot nicer than the real Gina, but that is another story.) Gina took care to go over the finer points of the storage contract. The important points to remember is that the rent is due on the first of the month and that if you fall behind by more than a month, they have the right to seize the contents of your unit and sell your stuff at auction. This seldom happens if you are only a month behind, but it is important to remember that it can. To avoid this disaster, you can opt for automatic withdrawal from your credit card. The other point to remember is that you are required to carry insurance on your stuff. They will provide the insurance for a small fee. When you come on move-in day, it's good to bring a lock even if you are not moving your stuff in at that time. Public Storage can sell you a lock if you wish. Gina took me to my locker. I looked it over and it seemed fine to me. Gina removed the Public Storage lock and I replaced it with one of my own. Gina was also nice to give me a map of the facility. If you are a person like me who constantly loses his car in parking lots, you will need this map. The warehouse is a warren of hallways flanked on either side by identical looking red storage units. It's easy to get lost, so get the map! You can rent a locker on the main level or the upper or lower levels. The main level is somewhat more expensive, but I see no real advantage to it. To get to the other levels you punch in a code and ride the elevator. Not a problem. The only problem I have had at Public Storage was not really their fault. One Saturday afternoon I arrived to put more junk in my locker. I pushed the elevator button and waited and waited and waited. After 5 minutes I asked an employee, not Gina, if the elevators were working. She followed me back to the lobby and pushed the buttons but got the same result. She said she thought it was the elevator man. And sure enough after a few minutes the elevators began to work. The doors opened and out saunters the Otis elevator repair guy, quite oblivious he had kept me waiting for ten minutes. Grrrrr! It's true you must service the elevators, but how hard would it be to place a sign informing everyone the elevators will be out of service for 10 minutes? Not real cool, so I can't quite give Public Storage 5 stars. Other than that one incident, I'm very happy with the service. One word of warning. The only entrance to this Public Storage warehouse is from the town bound lane of Waialae Avenue. On the map it appears you can enter the parking lot by approaching from 21st Ave., but DON'T TRY THIS. On my second visit I made this mistake. As I approached Waialae from 21st , I stepped on the gas to make the light, fully expecting to drive straight across into the parking lot. Boy, was I in for a big surprise! As I zoomed through the intersection, I saw to my horror that the entrance to Public Storage was blocked by a tiny concrete triangle. Tiny it may be, but it was designed to derail a tank. So I had to act fast. Fortunately my old cab driving instincts took hold and I hit the brakes and steered sharply to the left. Or maybe I was supposed to steer first and then brake. I dunno. Whatever. What I do know is that my 20 year old Corolla screeched around the corner and stayed upright, like a good car should. Thanks Corolla. So let this be a warning. If you're going to this Public Storage you must approach from the town bound lane of Waialae. There is no other way. No even if you own a tank. So there you have it. If you are looking for a nice, clean place to store your junks in the Waialae-Kaimuki area, go see Gina at Waialae Public Storage. Only don't call her Gina, because as nice as she is, she might not answer your questions. read more

If it weren't for Albert's kindness (and of course the difficulty of moving "stuff"--that's why you have a storage unit!), we would definitely be somewhere else in a heartbeat. My parents have had a storage unit there, and when I added some things, we decided to get a bigger unit. Shouldn't be a problem, right? Wrong. Because my parents were going to be out of town, instead of just switching the unit over (we're offering to give them more money, wouldn't they want to make it easy for us to do?!?!) I had to go through this whole process of switching the lease over to my name, releasing their name off the original lease, and then trying to get the new lease signed. NOT an easy process. That was close to 6 months ago. Wouldn't have been a big deal, except now my parents want the lease back in their name. Should be easy, right? NOPE! We're changing it back to the name originally on the lease!!!! Instead of taking what should have been 5 minutes, and filling out a new lease, my father and I spent close to a 1/2 hour wasting time because they needed my information, and then my fathers'. (I will say I went through a name change, but we're going back to the original name on the lease---WILLINGLY!) Both my father and I were present, why the big deal? To top everything off, the woman we were originally working with went in the back office, came out, and said "this is what my district manager said." We patiently, and calmly, said we would be happy to speak with her. She went back in the office, and promptly stayed there for about 10 minutes. In the meantime, Albert stepped in--because he remembered me!--and offered to take over. (The manager never came out, and neither she nor the woman originally helping us offered an apology.) Both times, Albert has been incredibly sweet, and got the situations resolved. If it weren't so much trouble to move, we would. The facilities may be nice, but on customer service alone, beyond Albert, they are severely lacking. If you need to ever deal with anyone there, I would definitely call and find out when Albert's available! read more

I don't know about other storage companies, but Public Storage is a big NO. I researched several others and found this one was the least expensive and since I had never rented a storage unit before, I wanted as clean and cheap as possible. You MUST have their insurance so that's one (the first) scam. Then once you get your stuff there in less than six months they raise the monthly rates over 20% (tax and insurance goes up along with it). Then just over a year another raise. There is absolutely nothing you can do about it--except move your stuff out and go somewhere else. The reason there is nothing you can do about it is because this is what they do for everyone automatically. Maybe they are all a ripoff but this is my only experience with one. What a business plan! "Figure out how to screw each and every one of your customers." Guess it works for them. This must be an awful place to work because all you get is angry customers who corporate raises rent and there is nothing anyone can do about it. There must be a better company to work for somewhere. My sympathies to the employees and anyone who rents storage at a Public Storage facility. read more

As a public storage patron and also a resident from just around the corner, I am very disappointed in the lack of property maintenance. I have tried just about everything to get them to clean up a large amount of rubbish on the premises, including but not limited to me talking to the property manager and the police! Whenever I look out my window, I have to see the trash. The palolo stream bridge is a beautiful area where my kids like to play, and it really breaks my heart to see our back area turn into a dump. I guess I will have to take matters into my own hands and clean up their property for them. I will no longer use this business. read more

I must give high marks for cleanliness of the facility and parking. I'm rating down for my experience at this facility. I was there for more than a year. Although it was great to have 50% off my first month rent, they got me back 3 months later by raising my rent 15%. When you just move in to a facility, that's a bit upsetting because now you've spend all the time and energy to move in and it is a hassle to move out. I bit the bullet and stayed because I chose this facility for their great access hours. But then sometime Fall 2017, they changed their hours to 9:30am to 6pm with reduced hours on weekends. In my opinion, those are terrible hours because if you are like the rest of the working world, you're at work while they are open. I tried to stay in this facility but I've found I can't even use the facility because I can't get there when they are open. I moved to another Public Storage facility farther from home but with better hours. There was a kicker. I got a unit twice the size for not much more than I was paying here! Kind of sad that I didn't leave as soon as they raised my rent. When I called to give move out notice, I was told there is no prorating. I thought they did when I signed up, but maybe there was some additional fine print in there somewhere. The person I talked to was not pleasant to talk to. Maybe they are getting a lot of move-outs as response to their bad hours. read more

The Place is modern clean, neat and well lighted All of the staff is friendly and helpful and the manager (Gloria) is particularly good, make that excellent. She goes out of her way to make sure that everything is done right. All of the staff and management (Carol) are tops. I had a problem with my locks, and Gloria let me know that my locks were not too secure and suggested that I use the Public Storage approved type to make sure that everything was secure. Do not rent here! Be forewarned. Turn around and drive away fast. They will increase your rate in 5 months or less without you knowing. They said they mailed a notice saying of the rate increase which I never received. When I called to voice my disdain for their unethical business practices, customer service said to take it up to management, Carol Yasuoka. I will be doing just that as well as reporting them to the BBB. It isn't even about the money at this point. It seems that this is not the first complaint. It's so shade in my opinion. Beware!! Your rates are not locked in after you sign the contract. They raised our rates by 20% after several months. Basically it's a month to month contract that they can change at anytime. They know you are pretty much stuck with the higher rates because most people will not go through the trouble of moving all of their belongings into another unit. I had a great experience with the staff at this location. They were very nice, funny, and kind to me. Prices could be lower, but we did get a student discount for half price for the first month. I was told that if I came a month earlier to store my things that I would have gotten a different deal where the first month was 1$ off, so there's that. Overall, I had as good of an experience as I could have at a storage place. Knocking off one star for the massive amount of paperwork and having to pay for insurance. (I feel like if my stuff is in a locked compartment on the third floor of a windowless gated building it should be safe from theft) read more

Always prepare for the worst, to my very plesant suprise, Christina was so kindly and professional, explained how everything worked, showed me the storage space. PERFECT! Signed sealed and delivered in less than 35 minutes.
