This review is for this location only. I had movers help me move out of my one bedroom apartment, reserved a 5x15 unit at the 190 10th street location, and had even called the location 3 times the week prior to make sure someone would be there when I arrived with the moving company to show me to my reserved unit and give me the keys. Michael and Sully (his name was always rushed on the phone messages so not sure if that was his name, but he was the manager of this location) both assured me that someone would be there and that having the movers would be no problem. The day of the move comes and I arrive at the 190 10th st location with the movers that I am paying by the hour at the exact time I said I would be there and there is NO ONE there. Called the number on my reservation and it rang the phone inside where no attendant could be found. This was a nightmare. After trying to find the managers number or email address or any contact information to try and fix this issue, I decided to scramble and find another storage facility (Security Storage). This was not ideal as Security Storage was more expensive for a smaller unit, but at least there was someone there at the building to help me. As we were headed there, we spotted another Public Storage at 99 Van Ness and I decided to run to see if it had a human being inside that could help me... Al at the Public Storage on 99 Van Ness saved the day. Truly. He and another woman were there at the front desk, but Al was able to find my reservation, had the same unit available, and honored the price / promotion I had gotten online for the 190 10th Street location. The whole day had been a mess as moving can be, but Al was very calm and extremely helpful in getting me to the finish line on my moving day. The facility is clean and in a good location. They have dolly's for you to use and the elevator to the units is big enough to shuttle many things at once. I can't thank Al enough for helping me out that day. I can't say I have anything good to say about the 10th street location, but the Van ness location feels much more secure and easier to get to if you have a car. Thanks again Al. read more

This facilities is clean and convenient, but inadequately staffed and maintained. Most often there's only one person working, and it's not uncommon to have to wait to get car while they're on break. We are moving out of it, but for the second time in a week came to do pick ups and both elevators were out of commission. read more

Yet another time I try to bring things to my storage unit. I can't get on of 5 carts lined up in the Office, because of course there is no one there and the door is locked. My unit is right next to the elevator, so it shouldn't be that inconvenient, but of course that elevator is broken, as it usually is, and now I have to carry all of my things by hand across the building from the back elevator. Notably, I was stuck between floors in this elevator for 20 minutes, until the firefighters could come let us out just a few weeks ago. Been a customer for 2.5 years. Many hundreds of dollars a month. They know how hard switching is and I feel totally trapped. What an awful place. read more

WARNING! Public Storage is a HORRIBLE company. This location is absolutely DISGUSTING. It is completely infested with RODENTS. This is particularly dangerous for your health. I found massive amounts of rodent droppings in my storage unit. Someone also broke into my unit which might have been an inside job. The rodent problem at Public Storage is particularly alarming because people can get rodent-borne DISEASES such as the hantavirus from exposure (breathing or touching) to rodent droppings. The absolute worst customer service experience of my life. I didn't know that our access to our own storage unit was cut off on 5pm on a Sunday. I thought just the rental office closed at that time. When the staff informed me that my access code for the entry doors and elevators would stop at 5pm. The staff member then told me that I could get all my stuff in and load up the stairs. By saying that, I thought I had 20 minutes to get everything inside and I could then get everything in my unit. I was already almost done. We picked up the pace and then I had to send my movers home at 5pm. I was going to handle moving everything myself. It was 5:18 an the staff members then bullied me into leaving my remaining belongings (which would have taken 15 more minutes to put away) in the hallways of the storage units unlocked and unattended. It made zero sense. I pleaded my case and let them know I misunderstood the closing time and that I was almost done. Thinking their empathy and customer service would allow them to see that I was hustling my butt off to get this done. I took photos of what I was not able to put i to my unit and rolled one more item closer to my unit. The staff member then threatened me by saying that if I didn't show up at 9:30am on the dot that he would throw all my stuff away. It was incredibly hostile and very unprofessional. Shame on this location and this team. I'm glad I only have to rent the unit for one month. read more

TLDR; AVOID! If you are looking for super convenient storage in SF, I switched to Public Storage's main competitor located right at the freeway entrance. Better hours, more convenient location and the staff is kind and respectful as opposed to rude and slovenly. Second and last time I will use Public Storage for my storage needs. I am a full-time traveller and I keep a storage unit for when I am in town. I often am traveling in or out of town and need to swap a few things in storage. It turns out this is often right near the end this facility's access hours. I have tried my best each time to leave before 5pm or 6pm. However on multiple occasions I left at 6:01, 6:07, etc. Each time the employees made sure I knew I was inconveniencing them and were rude. Additionally, Public Storage's systems automatically lock your code if you leave even a minute after closing time. You have to go talk to their rude employees. This happened only TWICE. I only accessed the unit an average of 1-2 times a month. The second time they locked my code, I was told that if it happened again they would evict me. If you are looking for a nice, clean, secure and convenient storage facility where you are almost sure to find an available space, you should contact this Public Storage at 99 S Van Ness. I have had to upgrade a few times from a small starter space to a large garage-size space once renovations commenced on my home. Each time was easy and smooth. The staff at this location are friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and very professional. I have not ever had an unpleasant experience. Having a great staff on site and the facility kept very clean helps me feel good about my decision to store my belongings here. I highly recommend it. I can always access my items during business hours and they're always dry and not stolen. However, my rent has NEARLY DOUBLED within a little over a year of renting a storage space. I tried to request a lowering and it was denied. so I rented a new space directly next to the current one and then moved my stuff and after closing my account on the first unit, I pay NEARLY HALF OF WHAT I WAS idk if you like me or hate me Public Storage, but I know you like money. I am starting this review by stating that we filed a police report for our missing flatscreen LED TV, bike and other miscellaneous items. The first thing the two police officers told us when they arrived was that there was a period of time in which they were coming to this specific Public Storage at 99 S Van Ness on a weekly basis for burglaries. That info. in itself should give you reason to not rent here. If you can avoid it, do NOT put your stuff in storage. This was the first time that my husband and I used a storage unit after moving abroad and it will definitely be our last. There are no cameras anywhere in the facility and some of the employees working there seem untrustworthy given a few experiences we encountered. Just google "storage burglaries" and it'll turn you off. After having issues pulling the door down to leave during one of our storage unit visits, one of the workers came up to change the plate where the lock goes. That's when we left the TV and bike in the front area inside the unit with the intention to sell. It wasn't until 9 months later when we came back to vacate the unit that we noticed our items were missing. To our knowledge, the worker who changed the plate was the only person who had seen our items in the unit. We have now filed a claim with insurance and hope we will at least get compensated for our items. However, I'm very disappointed as to how unreliable Public Storage is and hope that eventually they better their security. read more

This place is terrible in every way a business can be terrible. First, the facilities: they are old, dirty and do not work well. The elevator does not work half the time, it is very poorly marked. You basically have to guess if your are rear or forward and lick the right button. There are no carts available in the back. And if you show up at 5:45 forget about accessing your unit even though it's supposed to close at 6:00. These fraudsters shut everything down 15 minutes before they say they do. Second, the rent: went up 40% in less than a year. Third the people: mean, lazy, unavailable and stupid. I am not expecting world-class intellects but a bit of customer service would be nice. Avoid! Horrible customer service! This actually happened to me today. It's a long review, but worth reading. My experience online 4/11/2018: I went online to reserve a 10x10 unit. While online making the reservation I called and asked if I possibly needed a larger unit. The person on the phone told me to go in and ask to see the larger unit and if I needed it that they would give me the online prices at the location. My experience at the 99 Van Ness location 4/12/2018: 2 people working and African lady with glasses & an older White man with a shaved head. Both employees have HORRIBLE customer service. 1st: The lady takes me to see the 10x10 unit. Everything is fine at this point. I asked if I could see a larger 10x15 unit because even though the ceiling height was high, I don't have a ladder, nor want to stack boxes 15-20 feet high. They also do not provide a ladder for liability reasons. 2nd: The lady takes me to the 10x15 unit. I think it looks good and ask for the price difference. We stand by the unit on the 3rd floor for about 10 minutes while she calls the guy at the front desk (on SPEAKER PHONE). This is where the problems start. He quotes me $389 over the phone. I'm online looking at the price and it's $294. She tells the guy I'm looking online and saw the lower price. Guy says he can't give me the price that I have to pay the larger price for the unit. I said, no problem I'll just make the reservation online. KEEP IN MIND HE IS ON SPEAKER PHONE. He then proceeds to say "she's a dumb idiot, and doesn't know what she's doing" then proceeds to lecture the lady helping me about how she should stop me from reserving online. As he continues to bad mouth me for looking at prices online I remind the lady that she has the phone on speaker and I can hear the whole conversation. She then realizes it "oops" and takes the phone off speaker. At this point I'm pissed. I told her that's horrible customer service and that I want to leave. She continues to lock up the unit and walk me back to the elevator. I then walked into the office and told the bald guy working that this is no way to treat customers and that they should apologize. NEITHER ONE of them said sorry for what they did. I reached out to the corporate office and asked them to message the district manager Amador Brenneman. We'll see if they actually follow up for resolution. I would give zero stars if I could. read more

Often filthy (I've seen big piles of excrement [human? large dog? who knows?] more than once), with denizens of the nearby streets using it as a home for themselves and their dogs (PITS, German Shepherds, etc.), making it dangerous and trashy for the rest of us and leading to break-ins; all sorts of people camped out and storing food; human feces in the hallways. And I haven't even mentioned to the rats and moths! When you bring it to the attention of the "management" (Whatever the F that is!), their eyes glaze over and give you some verbal variation on a shrug. BTW, that insurance you pay for each month? Doesn't cover the damage caused by rats and moths, both of which are plentiful at this storage sham. read more

The people who work here seem generally nice, but the system is broken. My storage unit was broken into by another tenant at the same location and I had valuable items stolen. The only security cameras at the place are a few on the outside and in the office, so there was no record of theft. The walls of the units are made of sheet metal that the theif bent back to break in and steal my stuff. No locked door on the outside, just a gate that someone could climb over. And the police don't really do anything other than give you a case number unless you have absolute proof. According to the police, this place has a theft about once a week. I made the mistake of thinking my things were safe here. They obviously weren't. read more

Great staff here--but the policies are insane. If you're not out before the month starts, you have to pay an entire month of rent, and they do not prorate. I'm out on the 3rd, but have to pay the entire $175 regardless. I called their corporate number and not only was the lady very rude, but she said that the reason why you can not is that the system can't handle payment changes. What? What kind of business can't update payments? Clearly, that isn't the real issue--it's that Public Storage wants more of your money. This is shady! Love these guys! Got in a jam with my living situation, had to store all of my stuff last minute. They gave me a killer deal, were Super sweet & accommodating, had boxes and gave me exactly what I wanted and needed. Clean, safe, nice staff. This place was terrible. I don't know why people think that Al and Elise were nice. They always made it seem it was a hassle to do anything. Maybe because they always had to be on guard with the riff raff clientele? The only time Al was nice to and even cheery to me was when I was checking out. In the winter months the lights in the back won't go on so it's was creepy and scary. And Al's response was that it was the clocks on the lights hadn't been re-set.... OK so re-set them. Or just turn the lights on when its dark. Why? Because, as people below mentioned, transients house their belongings there. They have their clothes there, change there, hang out there, smoke there (yes they do), and it is somewhat scary. It always reeked of urine. The lighting was flickering like an old zombie video game... My girlfriend put it this way: "Every time I went there I feared being trapped in that maze of a place filled with urine stench among violent, impaired transients. Not to mention the zombie nightmare potential....it was like a scary vortex " She hated going there. Never came with me and its like a monkey off my back to not be them paying $160/month. I just didn't have the same experience Travis had. I rented a $200 space for a year, then notified them I was moving out. Six weeks later I'm getting calls every day from a Collections outfit, saying I owe $66. . . .It seems when you give them notice you are moving out via the phone, it doesn't count. And how can I prove I gave notice? Its not much dough, but very, very annoying. Its a cleanish space, only a few dead rats, but expensive in my book. My advice is to get it in writing when you are moving out. read more

I was so stressed trying to find an available climate controlled space to store my childhood piano in while I found a new job and place to live. I couldn't find anything except for a 5x5, but I later learned that these 60"x60" spaces are often approximations because of the curved metal walls - and my piano would likely not fit. I was calling customer support, sales, looking online, and I just couldn't find an easy solution - all of the nearby units were taken it seemed online. Enter Al, my hero. He found a perfect space in the building with a hallway type stretch that the piano can slide into, made sure to measure it for me and call me back, and made the whole checkin experience so painless. I have yet to move my things in and see how secure the facility is, but the first half of my experience was fantastic thanks to Al. Also - they were very careful to spray and clean the counter before I went through the checkin process, and everyone was wearing masks. read more

I've used this once in the past. Good thing is it's cheap. And has secure door and gates. But it's pretty dirty and the lower floor takes a long time to get to. Your storage unit might be like a 10 minute walk from the gate. Hours are also 10-5 so it's pretty restrictive read more

Al the manager was more than helpful to my moving out process and I can't thank him enough. He is dedicated to 99 So Van Ness and he is quite friendly if you are pleasant to him as well. The place has its drawbacks with only 3 carts but you learn to work the building elevator maze and best times of day. 9:30 seems like a late opening time but at least parking is easy. I have no compliments of complaints about the storage facility. This is the only one I have used so I have no comparisons. I am writing this review because the evening manager is a lifesaver. On Friday, I loaded up a bunch of boxes (10 boxes to be exact) that needed to go to storage into my employees car and drove to public storage. Due to "great" time management, I arrived less than 30 minutes prior to the facility closing only to realize that I did not bring the key. With no way to get into my storage, I was stuck. About 10 minutes prior to closing, I asked them to cut off the lock or even sell me a second storage space because I could not leave all these boxes in my employee's car for the weekend. The gentleman in charge told me it would be too expensive for me to pay for a second space and offered to hold the boxes for me over the weekend in his office. Talk about going above and beyond for their customers. If the owner is reading this review, please give this manager a raise or at least a pat on the back! read more

I don't have my stuff stored here, I merely wanted to buy some packing supplies as they have an excellent selection. But, before I schlepped myself all the way to their inconvenient location, I wanted to make sure that the retail store was still open (it being almost 6pm and my rage would be immeasurable if I hazarded my way through SF rush hour only to find the place closed) so I thought I would just call them and find out. Nope. No can do. Not happening. Even though you can find a 415 area code number for the location, you're diverted to an automated line which offers no helpful information about the actual physical place I'm trying to call. The website doesn't offer business hour information either. So irritating. I'm not going. read more

For a CITY Storage of Large size, this place I do think very well of. The Manager, Al, was VERY Helpful, as was all the staff. I try to be respectful to them ( they have a hard job ), and they showed me that respect back. Kept my items in storage over 5 years. The larger units are much more secure, and when you move out keep in mind even if your 1 day into the next Month you will have to pay for that Month. Thats what you sign going in. They kept my items save, and were kind and helpful, even when busy. I just closed out my Unit, so Thanks to you ALL! Thanks AL! read more
