We were happy to find out that Growler's was right near where we were staying, so we headed over on a Saturday evening during happy hour ($1 off drafts). Happy hour on Saturday? I'm ready to move to Sarasota. The atmosphere inside is nice and casual without being grimy. Even the bathrooms are clean! The bartenders that we had were awesome -- friendly and helpful. We enjoyed a couple of beers and although there was sound background music playing, it wasn't TOO loud to have a conversation, like a lot of bars (at least in Miami). There's no food at Growler's, but the bartender suggested that we order from one of the nearby restaurants and have them bring it over. We ended up leaving to eat, explore a bit, and then return to Growler's later that night for some live music. However, we did see some people order food and the restaurant nextdoor walked the food right over. Around 9 or so, a couple of bands started playing. It seems like a pretty cool place where new artists can get a start. One of the women who played said it was her first show ever. The bands were pretty good and the bar started to fill up as the night progressed. If we return to Sarasota, we'll hit Growler's up again for a laid back night.

My son-in-law and I visited them on Easter Sunday and they were open, Premier Football (soccer) matches draw patrons. There are an ample amount of tables but most of the crowd sits at the bar positioning themselves for proper screen viewing. We sat at a table with countertop chairs. You can smell that smoking has been allowed, although none of the customers were imbibing at the time. I also did not see ashtrays at the bar. Our goal was simple, order an authentic English Breakfast. Champions appear to be a basic mom-and-pop restaurant. Pop takes the orders and tends bar, mom is in the kitchen preparing orders. I ordered a small breakfast which I will share in an attached photo. The order was huge. The full breakfast has an additional egg and double meat. English breakfasts include eggs, fried bread or toast, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, bangers, and ham. I suggest ordering a small breakfast unless you are beyond hungry. I have been fortunate to enjoy a proper English Breakfast in the UK and what Champions prepares is the real deal. One of the others ordered curry chicken and I'm disappointed that I didn't try it, but it is on my list for the next time I visit. Bottom line, I highly recommend Champions Pub if you enjoy British food, or enjoy European Football. I will rate this a five-star meal, but overall I will give it a four only because of the smoking atmosphere.

Unfortunately, for what you pay for the food, it's just OK. The football game special prices are really not that special. Today we ordered the cheesesteak with just meat and cheese. But it came out with everything else. So it had to be sent back. The au jus tasted off, there was a slight pickle taste to it. The burgers were pretty good. Unfortunately, two of the drinks that we got from the special football menu had incorrect prices. We mentioned the one we had originally noticed to our server, and she did take the extra $2 off for the mule. But we didn't realize that the Heineken 0 we ordered had the incorrect price until we had already paid. So we paid an extra $1.50* for that unnecessarily. We did tell our server as we were walking out. She apologized again, but it's frustrating because we were incorrectly charged for a drink during a Steelers game last year. I'm sure we will go back to watch other games to be around other fans, but I would not make this my weekly Steelers hangout. They either need to correct their menu prices/make the specials more clear, or they need to fix their POS system. *Heineken 0 is listed as being $5, but we were charged $6.50. The bucket of 5 Heineken is listed as $29. It makes no sense to pay more money for 5 in a bucket than it would be for 5 singles ($25), so I'm guessing the $5 price on the menu is incorrect.

I stopped into Gecko's on a Monday evening around 7:00 PM for a quick bite. Being a sports bar, I…read moreexpected a lively atmosphere, but it was actually fairly quiet with only a handful of customers. Several TVs were showing different games and programs around the room, but the audio that was broadcasted didn't match any of the screens I could see from my table. The décor was simple and casual, but appropriate for a sports bar. I ordered the buttermilk chicken sandwich with a side of coleslaw. The chicken was thick cut, nicely fried, and served on a toasted bun with lettuce and tomato. It was good but tasted more like a country fried steak than buttermilk chicken. It comes with Gecko's "special sauce," which I requested on the side. The sauce had a noticeable kick and was a bit spicier than I prefer, but you may enjoy it. The coleslaw was fresh and very good. Though my server was friendly, greeted me promptly, and took my order quickly she was somewhat inexperienced. When the food arrived, she placed it on the table and immediately asked, "How is everything?" I've always felt that question works best after a guest has had a chance to take a bite, check that everything is there, and actually evaluate the meal. At that moment, all I could honestly say was, "Everything looks fine." Unfortunately, that was the last time I saw her until the end of the meal because had she checked in with me, I would have mentioned that the sandwich was supposed to include pickles, which were missing. She asked whether I'd like dessert. The menu specifically highlights the cheesecake and encourages guests to "ask your server" about it, so I did. "Tell me about the cheesecake." "It's New York style," she replied. "Do you make it in-house?" "No." "Where does it come from?" "I think we buy it at Publix." That conversation pretty much ended my interest in ordering what I thought was a pricey dessert. The payment process also felt dated. The check arrived as a small register receipt. When I said I'd like to pay by credit, the server told me to give her my credit card so it could be taken to a register elsewhere in the restaurant. I explained that I use Apple Pay on my watch or iPhone and asked if they could bring a card reader to the table. They don't have a portable payment device but she offered to take my watch or iphone to register. I typically don't even carry a credit card anymore and I certainly wasn't going to handover my Apple Watch or my iphone. I happened to have a credit card with me that day, but I don't like handing it over anymore as I have had my card compromised on multiple occasions. It was surprising to encounter a restaurant that still doesn't offer tableside card processing. In total, the food was good, the atmosphere was comfortable, and the staff was pleasant. Gecko's would benefit from a bit more server training, and a more modern payment system. If you decide to visit and pay by credit, make sure you bring a physical credit card with you.

Darn good shrimp taco, no kiddin (not the absolute best ever, but pretty close second!). I'd skip the fried pickles, which were saltier than a brick of salt. Service: we were seated immediately despite the place being very busy, waited upon in a split-second by an energetic friendly young lady, food came out promptly (did have to ask for drink refills, yeah, I'm spoiled). Bar: we didn't get any alcohol, but the bar area was separate from the dining area, which I appreciated; they also have a covered patio but it's just looking at a parking lot. Price: pretty reasonable for FL, honestly, despite being near two hotels, it seems like more of a bargain area - not downtrodden or anything, actually quite a clean and safe-feeling zone, anchored by a typical perfect Publix.
