After a full day of serious self-care (doctor appointments, errands, and elite-level snack shopping), we arrived at El Puerto in Tijuana in the exact condition one should: hungry and slightly dramatic. First things first--the aguas frescas understood the assignment. Guava and cucumber were icy, fresh, and basically a reset button for the soul. My niece wanted something a little stronger - enter the fresa-kiwi mojito, which was refreshing enough to make her forget she had responsibilities earlier that day. The food? A seafood symposium: * My niece went with the filet al chipotle--tender, flavorful, and clearly the overachiever at the table. * My sister chose the tostada de pulpo, which was fresh, perfectly seasoned, and proof that octopus can, in fact, be a love language. * I handled a dozen oysters like a professional (and by professional, I mean zero regrets). * And my friend--who couldn't chew--casually asked if they could make breakfast... and they did. Enter: huevos rancheros, served without judgment and with full hospitality points. This was our second stop on our day trip in TJ. We wanted some aguachile and this place did not disappoint! We were given some chips and yummy salsa to start with. We also ordered ceviche peruano, and shrimp tacos. The aguachile was so beautifully presented- there was a rose avocado at the center of the plate and the shrimp was nicely butterflied. I would have liked it to be a bit spicier though! The ceviche and tacos were pretty good as well. For drinks, I opted for a cucumber agua fresca. It was huge and very refreshing. Every few weeks I take a group across the border to check out a few food and beverage spots that are highly acclaimed. After selecting the neighborhood and siphoning through reviews I decided on Puerto as the photos made the place very enticing. After noticing that some said the food orders came out on the slow side I decided that we would get there at opening. We got there at noon on a Saturday and had the place to ourselves, which was awesome. Puerto, being a seafood themed restaurant, had coastal decorations all over. The stairway going upstairs was much talked about as it had oyster shells netted against the wall. Thanks to Brad B's review and his rave of the Ahi Steak Burger I came in knowing what I wanted. A friend of mine wanted to split the Aguachile Mixto and I am glad we did. I am not sure the spices in it, but it had a nice kick to it. We enjoyed chips and salsa while we awaited out entrees. While all the salsas were good, I highly liked the creamy green one. After much anticipation my Ahi Burger arrived. It was perfectly dressed with fried onion strings, creamy avocado and a kind of chipotle mayo. It was incredible and the steak fries it came with were great as well. I had a margarita, which I wish was a bit bigger. Service was fine and I think the prices were right on. For example, my Ahi Steak Burger was around $10, but I imagine it would be around $15+ in California due to high costs of labor, rent, etc. Everyone in attendance loved what they ordered and I think they would do it all over again. Stop #2 in my return to Tijuana. I'm going to try my best to write something worthwhile about this place since I was going on autopilot at this point of my day trip with a group of fine individuals. This is actually a new place our group wanted to try. In their past visits, they had a general circuit of places to visit, and this has not been one of them. As you'd imagine, they couldn't give me any recommendations since there was no prior experience. This is a very happening restaurant. The color scheme is very modern, energetic, and inviting. It was seemingly one of the newer restaurants in the area. They have some good food and drink specials, some of which are written in different places, like the ceiling. We had the dish that featured fresh salmon in the form of sashimi in a sort of ponzu sauce. My girlfriend wasn't as into it as I was. I also got a drink I believe was the Jarrito Mezcal con mango, whose clay pot cup was coated with that sticky sweet stuff. I enjoyed the drink, and consuming the sweet coating afterwards definitely made it a drink to further enjoy. The staff works very hard. They were in "full-court-press" mode as they were serving up orders seemingly-nonstop, communicating with each other constantly to ensure everything ran smoothly, which I think happened. The background music seemed to be very upbeat and current, which was probably the intention. The restrooms are upstairs where there is more seating, but I don't believe they seat anybody up there during the daytime. Would I return? Absolutely the next time I'm in the area. There is so much more I would like to try. read more

I've been eye f#cking Puerto Cocina Urbana's Instagram page for a few months now, (go look now), and I made a point of it being my first stop last weekend during a quick jaunt into Tijuana. You're going to have to know where you're going, speak decent Spanish if you opt for a taxi, or set the destination in your Uber app once you've crossed. No it's not walkable from the border crossing but is only a 7-10 minute drive once you land a car. Once you pull up you'll see that the building is beautiful, new, modern, and welcoming. Time to eat! Then language barrier is real though there are a few employees that speak some broken English. This is where my basic Spanish worked wonders but more importantly the food pics on Instagram served as our "picture menu" as there is no English anywhere in print. I feel like I went ahi crazy and ordered one of their ceviches with soy sauce that played a lot more like a poke. I loved it! The serving size was large and the dish itself was fish heavy with very little filler. Served with crackers or tostada shells... take your pick! The ahi burger was our most expensive item at about $9.00 and it was huge! This sandwich at home would ring in at $18.00 - $20.00 with the massive amount of fish that was loaded onto the bun. Topped with guacamole and served with a side of fries this one was a winner. I'll admit, I was pretty full when this "burger" came out so I ended up ditching the bun and devouring the fish. Now I know for next time! The bill arrived and for $40.00 we knocked out two vodka cocktails, one local beer, an ahi burger, the ahi ceviche/poke and some carnitas style pulpo. One of the pricier meals in Tijuana but absolutely worth it. I'd love to come back with friends for an end of the week happy hour, a birthday or hell, any reason at all. This is place is sooo good! I loved this place. I was warned that the service might be a bit slow but it was due to the fact that everything is made to order, well both time I been here it hasn't been slow but my friends and I have arrived before the place is packed. The local is very cute with outdoor sitting, and with this very hot fall we been having is a great place to get a table. The service has been good also, the first time the waiter was great (I wish I could remember his name), he asked what mood we were in, and he recommended accordingly. Both times I have ordered marlin enchiladas in red sauce, delicious. I've had the octopus chicharron and marlin sopes, also both a must try. The marlin tamales, a weird idea but amazing; the salmon tacos, also are a must try. They also have a good selection of craft beers, that go very good with the food. But if that isn't your thing they have a cucumber mojito, delish. Or try the mezcalitos, you won't regret it. This is a must try seafood place in Tj. I've never been treated like a sack of potatoes at the far corner of the kitchen fool. My mother and I were sat at the table by the cigarette butt box is (the smell was just horrible), we were given out menus..... and left there, forgotten for 30 minutes. Out neighbor miss bitch attitude got served 3 beers footing this time, out waiter never stoped once to see if we wanted some water. Went here following reviews from yelpers. It's a nice restaurant on a quiet cul de sac off 5th Ave. It's a bit pricy but you get good food. We ordered battered shrimp for appetizer - very good, especially with tamarind sauce, one of the three the dish came with. The waiter also brought out a selection of other sauces, which was a nice touch. For entree my husband got a grilled fish special - it was a filet of mojinete - and I got crab enchiladas. My husband's dish was very good. The enchiladas had too much salad and cheese over them for my liking. I also couldn't really taste the crab - not sure if it was the way they were cooked or what, but I wouldn't be able to tel they were crab enchiladas if I tasted them unknowingly. Their mango margarita was very good. I would visit again but opt for either a grilled fish special or some tacos or tostadas instead. read more

Location, ambiance, service and food were all excellent. Great selection of local and SD craft beers. This place has really great seafood. I had the ceviche that has shrimp and yellowfin tuna. It's not on the menu the waiter recommend it to me. It was incredible loved it. I also had the pulpo adobda taco which was real good flavor. My sister had the tequila with mango she really like it. I had a beer that I never tried before called Diablo blanco imported from los cabos. This is one of my favorite beers now. The have a lot of selection for beers. Go to the fridge next to the bar and check it out. It's easy that way so u can see what they have at the moment. The decor was amazing I like it a lot.
