Everyone needs a Mexican restaurant that's not really Mexican. This place fit the bill, and we happened to be passing through on discount margarita nigh. There are a ton of different combos to choose from, and what I tried tasted a little bit like Taco Bell...except enormous portions. Don't get me wrong - I love Taco Bell, it's a bit of a comfort food for me. But it's not great Mexican. To wash it down I order a huge margarita goblet. Woohoo for Puerto! Puerto will always be my favorite Mexican restaurant since I grew up eating it. There are three locations in Muncie, all of them serve good food and have a friendly staff! The Broadway location is my favorite, but I would recommend any of them! You should try the cheese dip, or just get a chimichanga smothered in it! read more

I would consider this location "pretty good", but the quality of the food isn't quite up to par with the location on Tillotison. The food is decent, but it lacks that "kick" that the other location seeds to have. On the plus side, the service at this location is STELLAR. If I'm on the north side of Muncie and craving Mexican, and on a tight schedule, I'd stop here. Otherwise, I'd drive to one of their other locations. read more

So this "Porta's" is where an old school Muncie restaurant called "Bandido's" ( think it was supposed to be Bandito's) used to be. They had good burritos. That is ancient history, but when "Porta's" was looking to expand there was a stucco building that looked like a Mexican restaurant ready for them. The food is the same as the other locations. This one tends to have fewer college students and more townies from Farmington. This location also tends to be less busy than the others. The food is typical Midwestern Mexican. Solid, not amazing though. read more

The price is right, however you get what you pay for. Everything is filled with pure Unstrained oily meat. Tacos, burritos, quesadillas... Tons of oil! It's pretty nasty. Either it can be dried prior to serving or the cook can use less oil. The three of us had to pick through and blot our meals. Not so bueno. Salsa and chips are decent. Pico de gallo is heavy on raw onion. Guac is yummy. Service is great. No choice on beans?!? What?!? Refried or nothing. No pinto or black beans. Super bummed about this. Have been here many times, however now that there is so much more competition in town, Puerta Vallerta will not make the cut. Sorry. read more

The food is always amazing but their take out service is always TERRIBLE. You're lucky if they answer their phones and when they do you are always IMMEDIATELY placed on hold for an absurd amount of time. This is our favorite local restaurant. The food is always fresh and cooked perfectly. The N. Broadway location is our favorite. Since the move to the new location the service has declined. Food was good. Always busy which is good for them, however..if you're gonna cross off names on a list you have to follow but still let someone else to be sat down before you is very unprofessional. Telling us we have to wait 20 minutes. We waited much longer, we noticed this long blonde chick who was setting people down at tables let two different people who didn't even put their names down be sat down before anyone else thay was still waiting on the list. I watched you do it and you saw that was very unprofessional as well because you wouldn't make eye contactnwirh the people you have made wait longer. . But again food was good. Queso was alrguth, salsa needed a lot of hot sauce . Ground beef was a little under seasoned and it got soggy real quick because my only tacos bottom started tearing off when I tried picking it up. I don't understand the hype. I've tried several different dishes and would never give anything better than a C-. Service is always rushed. I wanted to like this place so badly because I live nearby, love Mexican food, and had heard so many good things from friends who were Ball State grads, but I just can't get into it. In grad school we would come here almost every week. We would come here mid week and order up a bunch of the margaritas specials that were on sale. We would all be buzzing from those drinks. My favorite dish here was the Ismail Special, which consisted of chopped chicken, shrimp and rice rolled up in a tortilla roll. The price was reasonable for the amount of food. Not including drinks the bill was about $10 a person. I definitely miss coming here; they need to open up one of these in Chicago. read more

I moved back up here after living for about six years in McAllen, Texas on the Texas Mexico border in the tip of Texas. My feeling, along with the rest of my family, that is native to the south Texas area, is that this is about as close to authentic Mexican food as you are going to get in Muncie, Indiana. read more

This became such a cliche place to get Mexican food...in the middle of the Midwest. But the food itself is filling, the wait staff not so bad. They make a killer pitcher of Margarita that will make you turn over your keys early and turn you into an animal (literally I acted like I was a walrus once). Had the worst service I've had in a long time. We're new to the area and we have been on the hunt for a good Mexican place. Our server rushed us to order and then did not check on us. We needed an extra plate for our baby and had to ask 3 people for one. The waiter offered us water and never brought it to us. He also never brought us salsa. I love Puerto Vallarta!!! It is by far my favorite Mexican restaurant to eat at. I went to Ball State and made sure I had money to eat there at least once a week. About a year ago I moved to Austin, TX and couldn't wait to try the Mexican food there being closer to the border and all. I was very disappointed with the Mexican food and have been craving Puerto for about a year now. This ought not be called a Mexican restaurant. It's that simple. It could qualify as a "Mexican-themed Hoosier restaurant". On an overall level of service and wholesomeness, the place does make the minimum standards, but it's not Mexican. After years of living in the Corpus Christi, Texas, area and eating food cooked in restaurants by Mexicans for Mexicans, I decided to take a risk.. This place in Muncie falls utterly flat. The so-called "salsa" is better described as "tomato juice with seeds". I have had zingier stuff as a beverage, and the texture is quite wrong. Anyway, I had the chili colorado. Bland, some slight flavor in the sauce, the meat was just fajita beef, not properly cooked for chili colorado. The only beans available were refried beans, no charros? Then, to add insult to injury, I had to order pico as an extra. REALLY????? PICO AS AN EXTRA???? This place dares to call itself Mexican???? I ended up sending the pico back because it had no zing at all. Onions, tomatoes, parsley(?????), maybe a little bit of actual cilantro, a fiftieth of a drop of citrus juice, and someone MIGHT have waved around a single jalapeno 20 miles away from it. If you want Mexican food, stay away from this place, completely, It is not Mexican.Find some place full of Mexicans as customers, that's what it boils down to. read more

I love Puerto Vallarta. I've lived in Muncie for 13 years and have eaten at P.V. more frequently than any other restaurant in town. They have 3 different locations and they're all great. Tillotson location seems the nicest and newest with the most seating while the Broadway location seems the oldest, smallest, and a little rough around the edges and the Wheeling Ave, location is the spot I frequent the most often due to its proximity to my home in Halteman Village. The food is consistently spot on, hot, tasty, and made quickly. My favorite items include enchiladas supreme, carnitas, Ismael special, and parilla Mexicana. Margaritas are well made either as stiff or sweet as you prefer and a reasonable price available in sizes from small to ridiculously huge. The atmosphere is nothing special even for a Midwestern Mexican place but who cares when the food, service, and price are this good, I could eat here everyday and never get tired of it. Chips and salsa are always readily available for free and refilled as quickly as you can finish them. The only thing I don't like is that you pay at the register when you're finished rather than the server handling your bill but that's really insignificant in the grand scheme of how much I enjoy this company. If you hear somebody complain of authenticity or refer to the food as basterdized American versions of traditional mexican food ask that person when they last had dinner in Mexico then politely allow them to fuck off because this place rules. read more

WOAH WOAH WOAH.....What's up with the negative reviews?! This place is CLASSIC, Muncie's BEST! I grew up eating here, and I still LOVE it to this day. I currently live in Chicago, and I STILL have yet to find a fair subsititute. The thing is, there are other good Mexican restaurants, but they are either too pricey, or they taste boring, like everything else. PUERTA, as I like to call it, is the best place to go with a group of friends, get a delicious, STRONG margarita pitcher for only $14, some chips and salsa and white cheese dip, and a plethora of amazing entree options! And I am here to tell you, folks, you need to appreciate that pitcher price. Once in Chicago, I paid $25 for a really small margarita pitcher, and it wasn't nearly as strong or tastey as Puerta's. YEAH, and that's cheap in comparison to some other places. So, when I see these negative reviews about my FAV Mexican place, I get a little defensive. And don't start with me about the service! I have always had AMAZING top notch service at Puerta's, at least at this location! Everyone is always so nice and friendly and helpful. i like the atmosphere here a lot, you can get pretty rowdy and not get yelled at. you might get glares from families with children. oops. i really don't dig on puerto's food that much. i used to love the pitchers of top shelf margaritas, but it seems like they're more sweet and sour than they used to be and they kill my stomach. i really wish that the wheeling location would add an outdoor patio section, that lot that's on the side by marsh would be perfect for it. read more

The service was terrible. We were sitting for some time before the server came up to us. When we explained that we needed separate checks, she said she couldn't do it there, that the front desk would do it, but didn't really explain how. We each needed our own receipts for reimbursement but she kept saying don't worry, they'll make copies. Thankfully, we got our own receipts but I def spent the dinner wondering if I'd be submitting a receipt with someone else's margarita on it, ya know? I asked for extra lemon for my water and it came on my top of my fajitas. Even after wiping them down, they made my water taste funny. I got the zucchini fajitas. They gave me extra guac and sour cream b/c i didn't want beans or rice, which was nice. They only have flour tortillas so if you like corn (like me) you'll be disappointed. The fajitas were ok. The onions and green peppers were cooked well. The tomatoes were good too but there were only two small slices. The zucchini would have been good but I counted only 4 little wedges. I would think that when you get zucchini fajitas, the zucchini would be the prominent veg. There were also 3 broccoli florets. A weird mix, for sure. Flavor was alright, no real spice or added flavor besides the veggies and the oil it was cooked in. read more

Good food. Bad service. Our food was delivered promptly, was hot and tasty. And that's where our service ended. We had to hail down our waiter to get our bil, to-go containers & textural tortillas to take home. He brought the check, on which it is noted that you pay your server & the containers, but no tortillas, even after yet another reminders. We sat at our table for another 15 minutes waiting for him to bring them and take our credit card, which was laying on the table on top of our bill. He walked by a couple of times, waiting on others, but ignored us. We finally went to the front to pay and when asked if everything was okay, relayed our experience. The response: "well it doesn't look like you paid the dollar for the extra tortillas. We'll need to run a new bill." No apology. Nothing. read more
