Really sad, this rescue has horrible communication & makes you feel like you are not good enough while going through their application process. It took 2 weeks for them to deny our application. We have a paralyzed Frenchie & we wanted to give two of their paralyzed Frenchies with the same condition as ours a loving home. My kids were excited & we even went & bought toys & beds for the new dogs. We were willing to make the 10 hr drive so that the dogs wouldn't have to go through transport & because we personally wanted to be the ones to pick them up & bring them home. We gave references, our vet info & records, and opened our home for a virtual tour. A week after the tour, after e-mails & text messages we finally got a response. A denial email with absolutely no explanation as to the specific reasoning why they came to that decision. I had a weird feeling about them throughout the process, especially the longer it took & the less responsive they became things felt off. I've never been denied an adoption in my life before this. I work from home 100% & have experience with both the breed and special condition. These specific dogs require expressing their bladder several times a day. These aren't dogs that have people lined up, it takes a special home and a special person for them to be properly cared for and to thrive. If this "rescue" truly cared about the quality of life they dogs have in their new homes they wouldn't be operating like this. I feel really sorry for the animals. I do honestly believe the volunteer that they assigned to this had something to do with it as well. She gave off a strange vibe during out home visit. Almost like she was trying to find something wrong or something. We have been thoroughly vetted because we are a foster partner for our local shelter. There was absolutely no logical or legitimate reason for this. When I sent an email asking why they decided to deny us, they never responded. read more

We came to PugNation when it seemed like our dog was ready for a sibling. We were so glad to have made that decision because we met the sweetest 6 year old fawn pug and instantly got attached. Before being able to see the pugs we had to go through the application process, doing a home check and getting approved before setting up an appointment to see the pugs. Their application/vetting process was extensive, but I understand they love their pugs and have done everything to keep them safe, healthy and happy under their care. As a dog lover, I respect the lengths they go through to ensure things will only get better once the pug gets adopted. Going to visit the facility we saw how much work the staff and volunteers at PNRLA put in for the dogs. They were busy with what looked like 100 pugs. It was really admirable to see and I know that a place like that is run on the purest love. As for our pug, we are two weeks into having him at home and we are absolutely in love!! I cant say enough about Pug Nation, last year was a bad year for my family. We lost our 14yrs old chuggle in Febuary 2024. We knew we wanted to bring another pug home. Meet Opal. She is a 5 yo pug we adopted in March. She was originally scooped up as a stray in Bakersfield before being sent to Pugnation Pug Rescue in Carson. A few things we've learned about Opal so far... -She is mellow. Like SUPER mellow. -She loves to sleep curled up in a tight little pug ball next to me in bed. It doesn't matter that we sleep in a king-sized bed; she's not happy unless her snoring little pug body is pressed up against me, nudging me to the edge. So happy to have found this place, and our new furry friends. We adopted two funny boys from Pug Nation, one pure Pug, and one Pug/Chihuahua mix. The folks at Pug Nation were kind enough to sit with us several times, introduce us to different dogs until we found two that we thought were a good match for each other and our home. We adopted Derwin and Pawsli, each with an interesting back story of their own. Derwin was a stray, about a year and a half old, and Pawsli was a few months old born in the shelter. They are both super loving, and hilarious in their own unique ways, and became fast friends as soon as we got home. They've been with us now just over a month and a half without ever even having a fight. Other than never fighting they have acted like brothers since day one. The team at Pug Nation do all seem to genuinely care for the dogs there, and want to find the best homes for them. I honestly, can't imagine a smoother transition from shelter to home. Gwenn has put together an A+ team of folks dedicated to caring for and finding homes for lil puggos. After mourning the loss of our old pug man of 17.5 years, we decided it was time to adopt another. Once you have had a pug, it's hard not to want another :) The application process was very easy/efficient and we were quickly assigned to a volunteer to do a house check interview. The interview was done over video chat and within a few days we learned that we were approved to adopt through the rescue! We communicated with the team what we were looking for and what type of pug we thought would be a good fit for our family. The team was very communicative and helpful, and after only a few days they had organized for us to come up to LA to visit with the foster who was caring for a litter of puppies who were ready to find their forever homes. We thought the foster had done an amazing job caring for the little ones, and after playing with them for a while we chose the pug boy that we connected most with. The adoption paperwork was completed at Pug Nation, and was very organized and quick. The whole process from application to bringing home our new baby was ~1 month. Pug Nation Rescue of Los Angeles does a superb job caring for unwanted, neglected, abused, stray, disabled, elderly, and special needs pugs. Pug Nation was recommended to me by my vet six years ago when my first pug died. I was brokenhearted and needed a place to donate his belongings. I am so glad that I donated and found Gwenn and Pug Nation. At the end of 2016, I adopted Nigel, an eight-year-old pug who gave me five years of love and joy before going to pug heaven. Two months ago, I adopted Roscoe, a seven-year-old pug who is the sweetest, cutest, cuddliest, funniest pug you'll ever meet. Pug Nation follows policies and procedures to make sure that all pugs go to safe homes. First, you must fill out an application. Next, you must have a home check, which was done via Face Time. It was a thorough home check and took about an hour. Then, you make an appointment to come to Pug Nation and meet the pugs. You walk through the shelter and wait in the little back yard, and staff members bring out pugs to you one by one to visit and allow you time to get to know them a bit and choose one. You can also adopt by looking at available pugs listed on the website. That's how I wound up with Roscoe -- I saw his photo and fell in love, and I emailed Gwenn. She sent his digital adoption form, I completed it, paid the fee electronically, and picked him up three weeks later, after his medical clearance was granted. Pug Nation allowed me to visit him once to bond because it felt like a long three weeks to wait. Pug Nation provides the pugs medical attention, any needed treatment and medications, neutering/spaying, vaccinations, and, if medically indicated, anesthesia dental procedures. They truly give the pugs a clean bill of health before you take them home. It's a LOT of money and care to invest, and I am impressed and grateful for all that Gwenn and Pug Nation did for Roscoe before we brought him home. Some of the puggies at Pug Nation have special needs. Some can't walk well, or need doggy wheelchairs, some are blind or missing an eye, some need to be expressed to pee or poop. Some are quite elderly. I receive the monthly Pug Nation newsletter, and it is always uplifting to read that another disabled pug has gotten a permanent home. There are many pugs who are just fine, like Roscoe, and need a person to come along and adopt them. I do not understand the negative reviews on Yelp. Yes, there are policies and procedures in place, and they are somewhat strict. But this is for the good of the pugs. Gwenn might initially strike some people as brusque -- I admit, she did for me, a bit, at first blush. But once I got to know her, I realized that she is a kind and hardworking individual who cares monumentally about pugs. I truly don't understand how anyone can say this place is a "cash grab." Pug Nation just invested a huge amount of money in Roscoe's health before letting me bring him home. They are tremendously generous! They neutered him, cured him from roundworms, vaccinated him, and gave him an anesthesia dental procedure (not cheap). Pug Nation is a superb place to connect with if you have an interest in adopting a pug, or if you want to get to know more about pugs, volunteer, or sponsor a pug financially as a form of charity. I love Pug Nation, and I'm grateful for Nigel, Roscoe, and they joy that pugs bring. read more
