You will probably only experience this treatment if you are a person of color. My second visit here consisted of me and my husband being chastised for having to rehome a cat in the past due to us just simply not having enough space for her. Was accused of rehoming her to my best friend so that she could be an outdoor cat (this is untrue. She was a cat that required a house, not an apartment). I kept having to remind several staff members that rehoming her was the last thing we wanted to do and that it was in her best interest. Not to mention the several staff members who kept constantly asking us the same questions over and over again to see if our story would change. But I digress... the women here need to learn better hospitality and lenience. It truly was always an uncomfortable experience coming here and then having it be an even bigger bummer when a white person comes in to visit with the cats to be treated better than us. Lisa (from Bichon Rescue Brigade) and Irish (the foster parent)could not have been more accommodating and extremely easy to work with. The entire experience was very pleasant and professional. Our little Zuzu even came with a huge bag and food and treats, along with vaccinations, being spayed and microchipped. A first class organization!

The dog I wanted was with the Love 4 Canines organization. Went to the website where they requested I fill out a VERY lengthy adoption questionaire. Which I did. On Oct 19th. I received a prompt response saying my form had been received and thank you very much. Now the form said we will only contact families that have been approved for adoption. (This is the only reason I didn't give one star) Understand, I own my own home. I have a large backyard. I've raised and trained dogs my entire life. And while my home is not always perfect, I still know I would be a great dog owner. Pretty much everyday, I would check Priceless Pets for any new pets, and every day, the dog I wanted was still there, looking at me with those 'adopt me' eyes. So I waited 6 days and emailed them again. "I was just wondering if Sandi was still available and if I was still in the running?" Again nothing. Waited another 11 days, Sandi is still listed on the website, sent another email. "Hi, I filled out an adoption form for Sandi. I've been waiting and waiting and I hate to bug you again, but is there anyway for someone to get back to me on the status of my application? I really would love to adopt Sandi. I'm not even looking at any other animals because I'm really hoping I'm going to be able to adopt him. If you could just drop me a quick email, that would be great! Thanks," Nothing. I checked their website, no phone, no address. The only way listed to get a hold of them is via email. I emailed 2 more times, still no response. Nothing. But every day I see that sweet dog listed. I think it's horrible to do someone like that. I obviously was very interested and that dog still had not been adopted. It would have taken 2 minutes to say you don't qualify and put me out of my misery. I admire every organization that tries to help animals. God bless them. But this one should remember that there are good people out there as well and treat us with a little human kindness. I have now adopted 2 other dogs that are real sweet, but I'll always think of Sandi's face.

We came across an adorable Shih Tzu pair (a brother and sister) and submitted an application expressing interest in one of them. Within seconds of submitting, I received a call. The representative hadn't read my application at all. When she asked if I currently had a dog and I explained mine had just passed, there was zero acknowledgment; no condolences, nothing. She then informed me it was "unethical" to adopt just one puppy and that I'd need to take both. When I agreed to take both, she reversed course, saying the siblings would "fight" and I couldn't take them together. When I offered to adopt two unrelated dogs instead, the story changed again; apparently a doctor had just been approved for the dog I applied for, mid-conversation, and I was redirected to a one-year-old Yorkie before being abruptly dismissed. The inconsistencies were glaring, the policies shifted in real time, and the entire interaction was handled without a shred of compassion. I am a registered nurse and my husband works in the entertainment industry; we are experienced, attentive pet owners who gave our Yorkie an exceptional life. None of that was considered because my application was never actually reviewed. This experience is precisely why so many people turn to breeders and pet stores instead of rescues. When grieving applicants are met with dismissiveness, fabricated barriers, and contradictory excuses, it doesn't serve the animals; it leaves them in shelters longer. I hope the organization takes a hard look at how their team communicates with prospective adopters.
