Last spring, we had a guest at our house. At one point, his kids lost the keys to his 1997 pickup truck, his only keys. After hours of looking we called around to find a locksmith to help him get a new key. We called the 1-800 folks that charge a minimum to show up and give you a price, so we scheduled them to come out, assuming we would only be out the minimum if the price was too high. They told us they'd be here in 20 minutes and when I asked for an estimate they told me around $200 but no guarantee until they see the job. So, we waited, unfortunately, they called back to let us know the 20 minutes just turned into an hour and a half. In the need to find someone sooner, who could give us a straight up price, we found and called Troy at Puget Sound Key & Lock. Troy was in the middle of a job, but nothing but polite and friendly. He was very clear about a straight up price to replace an ignition key. Any fobs or push buttons require programming a chip. It didn't sound like something to be done on the fly in the rain at the end of the day (where we were). (The 1-800 guys said they could do that "for a price"). I asked Troy to call when he was done with his job. Meanwhile, I called the Ford dealership to see what could be done. They didn't have the programming codes for cars for that year, and if they did it would require bringing it into the shop. Not so much something to be done on the street, which after talking to the guys that charge a minimum to show up, I had the impression that this could be done. I was counting more and more on Troy's honesty. If you ever lose your last set of car keys, this is how you replace them. (The dealership might offer a different, albeit more expensive solution, but I'm only speaking in more immediate terms). You take the VIN number from the car and the locksmith (in our case - but possibly the dealership) puts the number into a system (which they have to pay for) and carves out a new key for your car, which they deliver to you. This was what Troy planned to do. He gave an honest straight up front, reasonable quote to get us out of a tough situation. (Automatic Windows were rolled down and we had a downpour) . No need to make us wait for an unknown quote based on the situation. The situation was simple. For 99% of us. Turns out the 1997 pickup was too old. Troy couldn't find the VIN # in the system. We were back to square one. Troy explained what we were in for, a much more difficult, longer fix, which he could do, but not in the dark, but offered to try. In the end, the keys were finally found, fortunately for my friend. Unfortunately we cannot speak of actual work that Troy did, but would hire him in a second based off our experience with him that day and his help and information. He was the most honest, straightforward, calm person we dealt with that day. Those are the people who deserve our business. read more

I got locked out of my car this morning, and after about an hour of freaking out and trying to break into it by myself, I called Puget Sound Key & Lock. They were here within 45 minutes of calling (after estimating about an hour) and had it unlocked in under 5 minutes. It only cost $45 (I had estimates from 3 other places ranging from $60-100) which I thought was great. I joined Yelp just to write this review. This service has been terrible! I moved to a new house and wanted the locks changed. Based on great reviews, I called these guys. I gave them 3 days advanced warning. Moving day arrived and they did not. When I called them, Troy said his van broke down and he couldn't come. I called the next weekend and they came but didn't have enough equipment to complete the job. I called to ask when the equipment would be ready. No call back for weeks. I called on Sunday to remind them and they said they would come that day. Then they called back an hour later to say they would come that evening or the next evening. They didn't come either evening! I have not heard from them since. It should not take a month and a dozen phone calls to get your locks changed! read more

I would definitely recommend Puget Sound Lock and Key. I lost my keys in the park. Even retracing my steps didn't help -- someone must have picked them up. I was stranded -- even the key to my condo was on that key chain! I called Puget Sound Lock and Key and their technician drove me home to get my second set of keys.
