I have a meeting in the Loop today so I'm headed to the city on the express train which has very few stops. Not all of the trains are express only the ones during rush hour. You can purchase a monthly pass or round trip ticket. Since I do most of my work from home, I buy tickets as needed. My tickets today total a little under $7.50 round trip. The turnstile takes NFC payments making it a breeze to pay. I did hear on the loudspeaker a staff requesting a passenger to pay and that they were on video?!? The ride into Chicago downtown was surprisingly jerky. Signage at the platform indicating the next train was misleading as it changed at the last minute. Standing for the duration of the ride was challenging due to the jerky braking and the jerky acceleration...maybe it's cultural?

I parked and went over to see why this station looked completely different from others. This station is the station that stops with in walking distance from the zoo so they zooed it up. The walkway has a cool sculpture of a mama and papa loin with a lion cub playing with papas tail. Each platform has a rock like structure with murals of wild animals in there natural habitat. Overall I thought this station was very cool and it seemed like something from a theme park right on a busy commuter suburban station.

That said, unless you're coming from the east, you should really be using this station. I value the Crystal Lake station for several reasons: * Ample parking spaces, whether adjacent or right across Main Street * Convenient automated payment options: cash, credit, or commuter card * It has an agent who can answer all your questions and sell you the ticket you actually need (plus you pay less if you buy from the agent) * It's close to the end of the line, which means more seat availability inbound to Chicago * It has several convenient scheduling options to and from Chicago * And lastly, there are two coffee shops within 50 feet of the station: Trax, which is in the station itself, and Grounds Coffee Bar, which is immediately north of the station One other note is that the conductors who run these lines have been really friendly, and I have really been on every train in the morning from the 606-636, and outbound from 625-663. If you've been a loyal Pingree user, or if you're thinking about commuting, you should definitely try the Crystal Lake station!

The Western Avenue station is my favorite because it is on a boulevard and that's a pretty tough location to beat! This station seems to get quite a bit of light on sunnier days. I think it has a more comfortable feel to it than the Kedzie and Ashland stations. Those stations feel "tucked away" to me - - and not in a cozy-feel type of way. This station has the usual escalator/stairways along with an elevator. I deducted a star because that elevator was out - of - order for about a month last year. Also, it was out another time and no one bothered to put a sign on the platform elevator door--wasted minutes waiting for an elevator that was not working! I have since found out that you can sign up for alerts regarding the elevators--it's nice to know in advance if they aren't working. The first couple of times that I added money to my CTA card on the Ventra vending machines, I asked the CTA attendants for assistance. Both times they were very kind and did not make me feel like I was bothering them. Sometimes people in this sort of job can do that! Luckily, not the case here. They were pleasant, helpful and willing to assist. There is a Dunkin Donuts in this station, which could be a plus, however, according to the current reviews on this DD Yelp business page, it could also be a disappointment. There are connections to four bus routes at this station : #35 (31st/35th Street), #39 (Pershing Road), #50 (Damen Avenue) and #62 (Archer Avenue).
