In my experience the more obscure the location, the better the food. Pupuseria El Pulgarcito is just off Boulevard Benito Juarez on Calle Emiliano Zapata, a dark residential street. Head all the way to the end on your right. For a gringo, this plays may seem, um, beneath your standards. I'm telling you between the food and Marlon you'd be a fool not to set your snobbishness aside.
We came after 7 so folks looked at us kind of funny like, "What are these tourists doing here?!" After just a moment Marlon jumped up to greeT us. His English was impeccable, as good as if he was born in the US. I was so thankful...my Spanish is embarrassing.
We basically ordered one of every pupusa, a corn tamale and chicken tamale. The pupusas were hand made while we waited. In the meantime, Marlon brought out our drinks.
the Atol de Elote is similar to a hot corn smoothy. Just think the sweetness of fresh corn, velvety rich in a steaming mug. My husband had Chan, a chia seed drink with the scent of strawberries. It was a bit too sweet for me but my husband loved it.
Next came the tamal de pollo n Hoya de platano. Best tamale EVER! The masa was light and fluffy, very moist. I hate to repeat my adjectives but it was velvety in your mouth. The filling had a soft spicy flavor and included garbanzo beans. Such a pleasant surprise.
Also came the tamal de elote con quest y cream. Dense, rich (almost buttery) and slightly sweet, this tamal was fried crisp on the outside. Could easily be eaten for a dessert.
We actually ordered one of each pupusa. Wisely we cut them in half, and again so we only ate 1/4...thank goodness. For those of you who've never had pupusas, think gordita, or the worlds best grilled cheese. masa like dough hand flattened filled with goodness and fried on a flat top. When done right (like they are here) they are perfectly crisp on the outside, with light moist masa and cheesy filling. Each one was oozing cheese which had spilled out just a bit on the hot surface....mmmm can you say fried Cheese?
Revuletas (chicharon, frijoles y queso) was perfectly salty with stretchy cheese and porky goodness.
Chicharon y quest dripped cheese and highlighted that pork flavor
Frijoles y queso was brimming with smooth beans and tons of cheese.
Calabaza was filled with thinly julienned zucchini and (what else) CHEESE.
There was of course plain old (awesome) cheese...perfectly melts and stringy. This was the best one to truly appreciate the quality of the masa.
We also had ajo. Told my husband it was a good thing we weren't dating. This was so packed with garlic you won't be kissing for a week. Hubby loved it. It was my least favorite. (I ate my whole portion)
My favorite was the loroco flower. So mild and moist. I really can't explain this one, sorry. I'll just say, if you've enjoyed the other pupusas, DO NOT skip this one.
I almost forgot the curtido. This cabbage slaw had the perfect balance of white vinegar and oregano. The bright acid and earthy herb was perfect with the rich pupusas.
Even though it was late and Marlon was close to closing up, he checked on us often. He chatted and made us feel like he really appreciated us being there. Obviously we couldn't finish but 1/2 our food. So Marlon packaged the leftovers for us.
We will be having pupusas and eggs for breakfast. Dinner, breakfast, exploding bellies, hospitality and great memories. Don't miss this place! read more
