I have an Indian background and know and love Indian food- while we've had food from there over 25-30 times. - but in this case don't know if the ownership has changed but the food was horrible!!! It was all old leftover food reheated - the quality of rice was the worst I've ever had - tandoori chicken was tasteless , all it was red color added to chicken without any Indian spices dropped into a grill - we also had lamb saag and potato tikki - I was shocked to see how bad it was - typically I love the leftovers, but not this time because more than 80 % went into the garbage!!! read more

I've been regularly ordering from this restaurant for ten years. It can be hit and miss, but when it's good, it's great. Tonight I ordered over the phone. The guy told me twenty minutes. I gave them twenty-five. An hour. An hour before I got my food. And in that hour, the only time the guy spoke to me was to try and get me to pay a second time. I had frozen groceries melt in the time it took me to get my order. Then when he gave it to me, and I pointed out how long it took, he rolled his eyes and walked away from me. There are too many Indian restaurants in this town to give this one my business. I'll go somewhere they don't openly disrespect their customers and pay for enough people to staff their restaurant efficiently. You lost a good one tonight, Puran. Though I'm sure you'll just roll your eyes when you read this, too. Update: And when I ate my food right after picking it up, it was somehow cold. I now realize my order was one of the many cartons just sitting there for an hour. Because that makes sense. Way to go, Puran. So glad you wanted me to pay double for this experience. This is my family's favorite Indian restaurant in the Bloomington-Normal area. The service is always great and the food is fantastic. We had the buffet this time and there was a large variety of delicious curries, chutneys, salad, and desserts. Our favorite this time around was the mango chicken curry. For the longest time I have loved this place. Their food is delicious and staff has been friendly. Unfortunately, after our experience today, we will not be coming back to Puran. Tuesday, April 16th, my mom placed an order of Butter chicken, rice, and garlic Nann. While eating she felt a sharp pain in her tongue and the food started crunching in her teeth, only to find that a shard of white glass was in her food and cut her tongue! We called Puran immediately after it happened asking to speak with a manager and let them know what had happened with the glass. The person who answered hung up immediately and never called back. I'm so disappointed in the complete lack of professionalism, responsibility and apology from the establishment. We will not be returning and highly suggest you do the same. read more

Wow, huge carry-out failure!! I used the app to order and that was super easy but didn't indicate the mess that was to follow. I ordered lamb dal and chicken tikka masala. Both came in pint cups which is very tiny considering they were $14 and $13 each. They packed the rice into one tiny Styrofoam clamshell so as soon as I opened it, rice spilled everywhere on the counter. If they are too cheap to use 2 clamshells, that is a very bad sign. I opened my chicken tikka masala to find it was butter chicken which I can't eat due to a dairy allergy so that was a complete $13 I threw into the garbage. The lamb dal was edible but was incredibly blah. I selected the spice level as "regular" which is a step up from mild but I could've made a spicier dish with a jar of sauce from the store. When I arrived for my order, the male cashier went over the the kitchen window to get my food and then he engaged in a lot of non-English chatting with the 2 cooks while all three stared at me. Incredibly uncomfortable. He finally brings my food over and stops 4 feet from me and holds it out so I have to walk over to him to get it? Such an odd, creepy interaction. There is nothing in the universe that would make me return to this location with SO MANY other good Indian restaurants. AVOID!!!!! read more

Despite being owned by the same people who owned the amazing Anand in downtown Normal (RIP, gone but never forgotten). Puran doesn't quite live up to that life-changing amazingness. That said, Puran is still delicious! I've gone to their lunch buffet a few times and for a buffet it is pretty damn good! Everything is so flavorful and I love getting a chance to try everything. The biryani is one of my faves, as is the tandoori chicken. The only downside with the buffet is that it's obviously very mild in terms of spiciness as it's for everyone. Although I guess it's okay to not burn my taste buds off every once in a while. For dinner, you can't go wrong which a chicken tikka masala or a Shahi chicken korma and some delicious garlic naan. Definitely get the kulfi for dessert, it's so delicious! The service is also always beyond superb! read more

I came here just because they are a part of a dining rewards program. The food was decent but everything else kinda sucked. First, of, the price was high. See my picture for two entrees. The real bowl curry/meat food was SMALL. The rest is all rice. We got 2 entrees, 1 beer, and 1 bread, the bill came back over $50. Second, the service was bad. My dinner special entree included naan bread and rice, the other entree also included rice. However, we only got 1 bowl of rice. When we ask the waiter, he said it will be ready soon. The rice NEVER came. Overall it was an okay experience and I probably won't come back. We have way too many other Indian restaurants in town to come back for this "okay" one. read more

Puran has always been one of our favorite Indian restaurants In the area by a long shot. Indian in Central Illinois has always been hit and miss... Puran has been consistent for a decade that I have been going. Did that all end tonight? Maybe. Wife had a coupon from one of those books the school sells... They wouldn't honor it. (Said the menu had changed... Not that I could tell??)... Then the waiter said he could take a few bucks off the meal... But I'll be damned if our bill of 40 bucks wasn't more than what it should have cost in the first place. We didn't get an itemized check... I was too annoyed to even care. Don't get me wrong... I can handle a screwup... But this just seemed to be complete contempt for the customer. Disappointed To say the least. Might be time to start checking out the other places in town. read more

If it had not been for Taj (possibly a former manager or owner) we may have walked out. when we had first walked in we were not greeted; the man who sat us was our waiter - he seemed distant and rude. Maybe he didn't speak English well enough but... regardless. Taj came over and rescued our experience and saved a customer. I didn't eat 8 of the chunks of meat because I couldn't tell what it was but know it wasn't chicken. It was a mystery because my husband and I both tried different pieces and have no idea what it was. I'm very familiar with Indian food and this was pretty terrible (also not fresh). Then comes my wife's Tandoori Mix. I don't know what TF they use for "chicken", but it was far from it. It looked like some sort of meat (tofu?) and as salty as it comes. She couldn't eat it, I had to try it, but had to spit it out as it was so gross. If I could give this place zero stars I would... I could keep going, but what's the point. I love the buffet here and can't wait until it opens again! Everything is consistent and delicious and there is a good variety of dishes. I also love that there are so many vegetarian options. My only complaint is that the take-out menu is too expensive to get a nice variety of dishes (like you can with the buffet). I stopped in because I enjoy (North and South) Indian food. The restaurant was clean and the staff was friendly. While the dining room was empty, many people came in to pick up orders. I ordered aloo paratha ($4), lamb curry ($14), and keema samosas ($5). The food was piping hot! However, the paratha was thin, not fluffy, and barely had any aloo/potatoes incorporated into it. The curry was spicy hot on the tongue but didn't have a good spice/masala flavor in it. The samosa also was not well seasoned. Everything looked and smelled great but the flavor was lacking. I love this place. I used to come here (before I moved to OR) when I needed comfort food. Their Saag Paneer is the best! Everything you order comes flavored, but not spicy. They ask you what level of heat you want (1-being not spicy to 6-HOT!). So if you are new to Indian food or nervous about the spices this is a great place to start! If you want to try more than just one dish, check out their dinner platters! They come out on a platter with separate compartments and you get to try a little bit of everything. Plus there is enough for a full meal. They have a regular buffet during lunch hours on the week days with lots of options to choose from and isn't never spicy. The staff is always super friendly and if you become a regular they very sweet and kind. I love their mango lassi's and garlic naan. A must have every-time. read more

Hm...I just finished a perfectly nice (if pricey) meal at a classy, award-winning Indian restaurant in Dublin (Ireland, not Ohio), and walked away thinking wistfully of Puran. This is common, actually. It seems that after almost every time I eat Indian food, anywhere, the conversation comes around to, "know what's good? The Puran. Siiiiigh." I don't know if you just always remember your first (my first taste of Indian food was here--in the company of a newish boyfriend, whom I later married, so happy memories all around) or if Puran is really just that much better than *a lot* of Indian restaurants in other states, bigger cities, and around the world. I'm no expert and don't usually stray too far outside of the familiar favorites like chicken makhani or lamb vindaloo (I always mean to try something new, but I can't imagine missing out these when I'm there!), but even given my limited repertoire, I don't think I've ever had Indian food elsewhere that is better than I've had here. Equal, maybe--but not better. I've never had the lunch buffet--have only been here for dinners that are far too few and far between now that I live three states away. read more

Buffet is terrible. I have never had worse; what I've had elsewhere has always been cheaper, with better service. Between me and a companion, we had every item at the rather meager lunch buffet, which is not a good sign. The Bad: Every chicken item was overcooked and dried out. The naan was hard, 'thick', and chewy, and was more like a dried-out pita than flaky, flexible, flavorful flatbread naan should be. The dal soup was all kinds of bad: the most accurate way (and I'm not trying to be overly nasty, poetic, or snarky) I could describe it would be mildewy-dirt taste, if that makes any sense. The saag paneer was all saag and no cottage cheese. The dal makhani was the absolute worst I have ever had. I love this dish, but here it is nearly inedible. An anemic salad was present, but was oxidizing by 12:40pm, and the fried onions/vegetables were soggy. The Tandoori chicken was without flavor and, again, over cooked. The stuff that should have been spicy wasn't, but it appeared that they had sauces you could apply. The good: They labeled what was and wasn't vegetarian. The iced tea was a little better than fast fast food drive thru iced tea, but was far from 'good' iced tea. The honey bread balls and the sweet carrot pudding dessert were both good, but that is just a product of the amount of sugar and butter that goes into these sweet dishes. The service: took long breaks and had no concept that when a buffet diner is finished with a plate, the plate should be cleared. They weren't even friendly. Even though we were alone save one other party, it seemed like a hassle for us to pay. The decor: very tacky. Cheap framed pieces and an animated waterfall that would be more fitting in a Northwoods bar with the Hamm's logo plastered on it. Also, half a library of Bollywood DVDs, half a grocery store of Indian prepared meals (plus some on the wall near the buffet - are they advertising the fact that they cook prepared food for their guests?), and a surveillance video hooked up to a PC. Also featuring chartreuse and neon orange Engrish signage directing patrons through the buffet process. None of these things enhanced the dining experience. All this and the place wasn't even cheap: $12.05 not including tip for a crusty 12-item lunch buffet plus a drink. More than $1 more than Ming's which is far superior. read more

BUT they had a buffet available for lunch that day (which took the pressure off of ordering something on a menu full of things I'd never heard of!) and I have to say ..... I came in at 12:40 pm on a Thursday for the lunch buffet. There were 6 customers other than me, but the buffet steam table was fully stocked. Typical Indian buffet, nothing too great nor too horrible.
