After moving to Winston Salem, I was looking for a spot to work out as well as a community as I work from home full time. Pure Barre WS has checked all of the boxes regarding this. The members as well as the instructors are so awesome. This specific location is very special as it is located in Reynolda Village and has lots of windows and feels very homey inside. Pricing: pure barre is expensive but from what I've found is comparable in price to other boutique fitness classes (think Orangetheory, 9round, etc). There are multiple class packages to choose from so you can find ones that fit your budget. Classes: there are 3 kinds of primary classes: classic, pure empower and pure reform. They offer mostly the classic which does change every time you go so you aren't bored of doing the exact same movements every time you go. I have been wanting to try out Pure Barre for a while now. Every time I drove by the studio in Reynolda Village I would consider joining all over again. The biggest deterrent for me was the price. It is just really $$ per class, but I did hear how awesome the classes and results are so it seems they charge so much because it is a system that works. A friend (shout out to Natalie N) was interested in trying it out so I decided why not go for it. They have a $99 monthly unlimited offer for new clients so that seemed worth it. After all isn't the buddy system always the best way to try out something new?! The studio is really nice and has a decent sized area where they have workout cloths for sale. Just be advised they are all along the lines of lulu lemon pricing. They do have a great hair tie and headband section so if you forget yours you can always purchase one. The socks that you need to do the workout are sold there for about $12. The girl who mans the front desk is really friendly. Now on to the actual class. I wish when it was your first class they would give you a bit of extra instruction. I have no real idea what tuck and freeze even actually means. Let alone if I was doing it remotely correctly. They do have a breaking down the bar instruction class that is free so I am definitely taking the next one of those that comes up. I get that its hard to give people personalized attention when the class is so big but maybe requiring a breaking down the barre class before you actually head into a room with 20 ladies who already know exactly what they are doing would be helpful. Although I am no pro (and when they mentioned going into a full split if you like, I think I actually laughed out loud) and have to take many breaks during class the 55 minutes goes by surprisingly quickly and you certainly feel your muscles working. For the month of May they are doing a 20 classes in 30 days challenge. My friend and I decided we might as well go for it since we have the unlimited this month. It was extremely random that I decided to try Pure Barre. I was in the area, running errands, and randomly decided to go to Reynolda Village. Being curious of what's there, I drove past the Pure Barre studio. I had no idea it was there lol, but I have heard of Pure Barre. Since I was there, I decided to go inside and ask questions. The staff was super friendly, the new client promo was an affordable way to try something totally new, and there were empty spots in one of the classes a couple hours later. As I retired athlete and an on-hiatus bellydancer, I didn't know what to expect. I have learned to never underestimate workouts, especially the easy-looking ones (looks can be deceiving)... especially since I'm completely out of shape and haven't exercised much while focused on finishing graduate school. I said all that to say....... I'm glad I went! I was sore in places I forgot I had LOLOLOL but it was a good kinda soreness. And I recognize the signs of a great workout.... (this is it). While it was a sometimes unpleasant reminder of how out of shape I am and I kept catching cramps...... overall it was great. My only wishes: that the instructor demonstrated the exercises and poses first (although she did stop by and help with technique) and I wish she allowed a few more seconds for each stretch in between. Bc by the time I understood what I was supposed to do for some poses, it was time to move on... and as cramped and sore as I was, the stretches felt fantastic but I didn't have time to completely stretch out the muscles b4 putting more work on them. But despite that..... it was a great workout and I will go back. I'm sure it will get easier with more practice. :) read more

I must say, I was very impressed with this class! I took pointe ballet and barre exercises along with competitive dance for 16 years when I was younger... And I am so happy I decided to stop and try this! I wanted something to help me strengthen my core, but also not high impact. I tend to enjoy Pilates and yoga, so with those in mind and also previous ballet, I said why not! I was in for a surprise, but in a great way. Yes, it is more challenging than what meets the eye being its more controlled and slow, however, it made me realize how well it works! I was more out of shape than I thought lol but I wouldn't change on not returning! I did love the large room and space for the classes, but even with previous dance, I was a little lost at first. I appreciate the instructor checking by to give tips and also know a large class does impact personal attention, but I would have felt more comfortable having possibly a warm up class for a few minutes to remember the basics. They do give a break down with more detail, but I wasn't aware prior to trying. The shop has very cute apparel and accessories and the staff was very helpful and also friendly, but I do think it is a little pricey... Especially if you aren't sure how long you may attend or if you'll even like it. Overall, I still loved this class and also went home practicing! I paid $25 for a 60 minute class (my first one - there's no free or discount to do a trial!) and $20 for a special kind of sock, only to leave totally disappointed in the lack of instruction and grossed out that the studio flooring is rough, smelly, outdoor carpeting. (When I asked if I could use a mat because it hurt my hands, I was told this was because I needed to build up strength. Huh?) Pure Barre is clearly its own brand of barre (not like barre I've taken in the past), focused on maneuvers that are not healthy or safe (and very focused on using elastic resistance bands for most of the class) -- I say this as someone who was a decades-long student of ballet and Pilates. It might have felt more doable if the teacher (Maggie) actually demonstrated more than one out of every ten exercises! She only rapidly called out what to do, with terminology that wasn't explained ahead of time. If you've experienced barre elsewhere, explore this place with caution. I will not be back. read more
