Let me start by saying this was a hidden gem of a vegan restaurant. To be honest, there's not many around in upstate NY but I was surprised to find it. My mother is a vegan, so it's really difficult to find restaurants that will cater to her. Well, no more. This will definitely be our go to vegan spot in the area. The restaurant itself is very clean, and it isn't big. That's ok. The bathroom was also very clean which is always a great sign of a well kept restaurant. It's run by a husband wife duo. Let me say that the service was prompt and polite. I couldn't ask for more. The food came out quickly and efficiently and it was all very very good. Probably my favorite was the general tso "chicken". However that's not to say everything else was bad because the food was all excellent. My mother, who is extremely picky with vegan food was also pleasantly surprised with the food. This will be her go to spot for a vegan meal. They do take out as well, so if you're in the mood for something a little different and you're in the Pine Bush area, try this place. Food is excellent and the prices are very reasonable. Pure City is a truly great vegetarian restaurant and always hits the spot when you can get it. Very fresh food, a nice place to dine in and also quick for takeout, and basically all vegan, so you don't have to worry about nitpicking the menu to make sure you avoid animal products. One of the best things about their menu is that it's very veggie-forward for those like me who do NOT like meat substitutes, but they also offer a lot of homemade mock meat options for those newer vegetarians looking for the Chinese of their childhoods. Some of the standouts of Pure City: - salt & pepper king mushrooms are a magical dish perfect for two - curry mei fun noodles are so tasty and great for a group of 3-4 - all soups and mushroom dishes are superb and veggie-forward - their eggplant in brown sauce is one of my favorites in the world Things to note about the place: - hours can be inconsistent and they often take vacations, so always call first or check their Facebook, which they update regularly - the bbq 'ribs' and a few other 'meats' can be on the chewier side - I think this is a very soy-forward place, so be careful with allergies Everyone from vegans and vegetarians to omnivores, should check out this place at least once. I was finally able to return to Pure City for the first time in several years after having an enjoyable dinner there with friends a few years ago. This time I was here for lunch. Since it was a hot day, I appreciated that many of the teas available could be ordered iced. The plum ice tea was sweetened like a plum sauce. The ginger ice tea had a very strong and pure ginger flavor, and I wonder if they actually steeped minced ginger. It's tricky to make a good hot-and-sour soup without meat in the soup or in the broth; theirs is pretty good considering. Both the soup, and my entree had chunks of firm tofu as well as vegetables. The lunch special portions are reasonable, and I like that you get brown rice instead of white rice. The vegetables are fresh and crisp, though everybody at my table agreed slightly more flavorful sauces would be even better. I wish it weren't so far out of my way; I'd return for dinner more often. read more

I was a regular here for over 15 years. I remember when Pure City first opened to many rave reviews. It was a family operation with the dad as the chef, the mom up front and the two boys waiting the tables. It seems ever since those boys went off to college, things have gone downhill. The last few times I've gone there, the mother has been utterly rude. Slamming/tossing things on the dining table and ignoring customers when they are trying to get your attention is not acceptable. I was also told that the veggie burgers are off the menu now. There is only a swing door separating the dining area and the kitchen and the most recent time I was there, we could here the chef and manager, spouses, arguing very loudly in Chinese. Totally ruined the ambiance for all of the customers. I would give this place 1 star but the nostalgia and good food makes me give it 2.5. Hopefully, they can turn things around and bring the business back to what it used to be. If you are in town and don't mind being mistreated, I recommend the the pupu platter, the wonton soup(specify that you want it hot), the general tso veggie nuggets, and the pure city veggie steak. read more

I was really excited to try this place out so my friend and I went on a Saturday. There were only 2 other tables besides us so it really wasn't that busy. Excited we were until we walked in. The waitress was either having her period that day or she is just a complete b!tch ALL the time. She pretty much tossed me the food on the table. I was scared asking her for anything extra because of her nasty attitude. We heard the kitchen staff yelling at each other in the back and she would just storm back in the front house scaring the shit out of everyone sitting down. The food was whatever, I only had the dumplings and they were over cooked and soggy. The only reason I'm giving them a 1 star is for the Mango pudding which was good. Ate dinner here a few days ago with my wife and a couple of friends. I am pretty much a carnivore but I agreed to give PC a try and figured at least I could bail and grab the vegetable fried rice and that is exactly what I did. Not being a vegetarian the pseudo-meat dishes were non-starters for me so it was going to be something simple that I would go with and that was the vegetable fried rice and vegetable wonton soup. The soup was okay, nothing special and the wontons were filled with something fake-meat-paste-ish that, while not bad, wasn't what I expected and kind of put me off. Next up was the veg fried rice. I thought that would be fairly straight-forward and it wasn't bad, but there was something that just didn't taste right. I am sure it was the type of rice they use or something like that. All I know is that for me, it was a bust. The others in the group had mixed results, some loved, some were "meh". I am sure if you are a vegetarian this place rocks, it always gets good reviews based on the vegetarian angle, but from my point of view it left quite a bit to be desired. Giving 5 stars because I know it is tough for all restaurants right now and do not want to wreck their stars. They are also a great addition to Pine Bush. That being said, when specifically saying, "I'd like to order the lunch specials at 1pm, and then going there and they charge the dinner price, and then they say they don't do lunch specials any longer is disappointing as it was way more expensive and I didn't want that much food for lunch. I will remember not to order lunch specials and longer, and call the price difference support for them being open during these difficult times. read more

My favorite vegan spot for mock meat. I have driven over and hour and half at times to get their food. It doesn't look like much on the outside but it's nice on the inside and the food is delicious. They have every variety of mock meat you can imagine. They do special menus for the holidays and they're always awesome. If you're going to a holiday I definitely recommend making a reservation. This place deserves six stars! It is "purely" delicious! All vegetarians should eat here, but frankly, all meat-lovers should eat here too, because this is an example of a place that does vegetarianism Right - healthy, tasty, exotic. My first meal was a sweet and sour dish that I also would swear had either pork or fish. My veggie husband admires how each vegetable in the stir-fry has been cooked to perfection, not too little, not too much - a feat that not everyone can do. The meals in this small vegetarian Buddhist place are beautiful, too, just like the decor. The Veggie Nugget Orange Flavor - ok, maybe not the fanciest name, but it is the tastiest food. Do order from the 2 pages of Specials, as each one has incredible flavor, though their soups are also great. The appetizer platter gets you quite a variety including those amazing "ribs". They have a date tea and a plum tea which are sweet and extraordinary. Despite being in a very small town, they are open late, too (10pm weeknights, 11pm weekends). If we lived closer, we'd be eating here once a week; as it is, the 2 of us usually order 4 entrees and take leftovers home for another meal! It's really nice to know that you can pick something off the menu without having to think about what non-veg items may be sneaked inside. Their food is super tasty and it's great that it's not overly salty or extremely strong in flavor like some other Chinese restaurants. No usage of MSG here! If you're vegan, a note of caution on their dessert menu. Some items have dairy inside - if you ask, they will let you know which ones aren't dairy-free. The portions are large, their menu selection vast, and the service is fast and attentive. Wow. A few weeks back I looked up vegetarian restaurants in my area looking to branch out and find new places that both my girlfriend and I could enjoy. (She's been a vegetarian for years and after 4 years together she is beginning to wear off on me. I'm enjoying it very much.) Pure City is a bit out of the way for people from the Eastern part of Orange County (a good 25 minutes for me) , but as anyone who visits will find out, it is well worth the drive. Their menu is enormous and offers a large variety of vegetarian dishes cooked fresh and prepared perfectly. The vegetables are locally grown and taste as if you had harvested them minutes before the meal was put together. They serve you water with limes in it which is the perfect compliment to the already refreshing food. There is Buddhist artwork on the wall and gentle music which makes the dining experience incredibly peaceful and enjoyable. Prices are reasonable, service is fast, and the people are very friendly. We've settled into ordering the eggplant (either the unbelievable spicy eggplant casserole or the cheaper eggplant with brown sauce, both are amazing) and the General Tso's "chicken" nuggets, which are superb too.
