This is a popular place in New Paltz for breakfast. On the weekends there are large lines waiting to get in. There is not much seating so plan to wait for a while. They have a large menu with tons of options. They offer their cheap breakfast options which are great with locals and college students. At night they offer a sushi happy hour which is great if you're looking for a late dinner. I ordered the chicken and waffles. They gave me light fluffy waffles with a baked chicken breast on top. I was pleasantly surprised with the chicken. I didn't expect it to be baked. It usually comes out fried. The food was good and the portion sizes were good. I enjoyed my meal. I want to come back here for the sushi happy hour so I will check it out soon. read more

Even one of my favorite breakfast spots sometimes lays an egg, so to speak. Such was the case today when I stopped in with beast friend, Pots & Pans, AKA Locomotive Breath. First off, our server, Almira, was great. Personable, efficient, attentive. Kept us well-caffeinated. She was a gem. MSB has a great vibe, interesting daily specials, as well as an eclectic menu. I opted for The Alamo... a dollop of sour cream over scrambled eggs, home fries, spicy sausage, and diced peppers/ onions / tomatoes, w asiago cheese and cilantro. P&P had the sunrise sandwich on a hard roll. For me, the Alamo was good, not great. The toast was on the burnt side, menu price did not reflect billed price (was told there was an upcharge for eggs - not sure why... the White House recently claimed a 69% decrease in the cost of eggs. Maybe the eggs came from Canada and were subject to tariffs?). Pots loved his breakfast sandwich. In fact, he loved it so much, he wore some of it on his shirt for the rest of the day. Haven't been going here since I was 18 years old. I'm glad to say that bistro is still in good hands as of 2026. Bistro is a place where we couldn't get an affordable meal and not get hassled to spend a lot of money. I've always been a fan of brunch at Main St. Breakfast is affordable and delicious. They're always busy and there is a wait on weekends but it is worth it. However, the other night I was walking by and saw a Late Night Bistro sign with sushi, so I had to stop by. The drinks are reasonably priced. I went with a Mai Tai which was under $10, but be aware they don't mix with alcohol, they mix with Sake. Still delicious though! I went with the Bistro roll and it was pretty good! Lots of meat, well-made, fresh. They don't have a huge selection with raw fish... mostly cooked stuff. It was pretty slow at night, was shocked because of the price point. read more

The service was awful. After sitting there for a while a nice young woman greeted us and got us drinks. Then we sat at least another 10 minutes when I finally asked her if we could order. She said she'd get our server. Several minutes later a guy wearing a black cycling cap came up and started speaking to the female server in a sharp & unnecessary way. She brushed it off best she could. He then came to our table and asked if we were ready. At this point we'd been waiting around for quite a while and I was getting concerned about the time since we had another commitment. I politely explained that we had a 1pm commitment and asked if he could give us a sense of whether we were alright time wise or not. He barked at me that he "cannot make any guarantees". I told him I understood, that was not what I was asking for...just asking for a general idea of whether it was realistic given the time. Again he bit my head off and talked to me like I was 4 years old, insisting he "cannot make any guarantees". I wish I could share how the food was, but we didn't stick around to find out. I stopped in with my elderly mother for lunch and the place was maybe 2/3 full. The servers were running around and seemed quite busy, although we were seated quickly so I wonder if they were shortstaffed. It did take a while to get water and then I had to ask at the bar for a refill. When we finally got to order, we decided on a basic grilled cheese and hamburger. 50 minutes later, the dishes were plopped on our table. Nothing special. I miss the days of $2 breakfast specials, we used to show up as a group of 11, each get a few specials and walk away only having to pay a few dollars. Sadly the economy has fallen apart over the past few years so they had to increase the price. Thanks inflation! Came here after the diner across the street was closed on a whim. Was looking for a place with diner food and this was it. We both got the Huckleberry Frolic which was a vegetarian breakfast wrap and it was delicious. I added mayo on the side. We also tried the groovy mimosa that was huge! The guys working there were friendly and service wasn't too slow even though our server did apologize saying they were short staffed. The seating was decent and the ambiance was just okay but it was a great affordable spot for pretty tasty breakfast food. Our son went to SUNY New Paltz, that's when we got introduced to this quirky delicious restaurant, staff are very patient, friendly and helpful, love the local artist painting and works on sale hanging on the walls, diner booths and all work together for cozy relaxed eatery . There are a lot of breakfast items on the menu and also some sandwiches, soups, salads, burgers, desserts. You can probably find something that someone in your party will like. I was impressed to find many options for vegetarians or vegans. The portobello tofu burger had a decent amount of filling and also came with fries (or soup or salad). The shrimp quesadillas also had decent filling, with avocados, black beans, tomatoes, mozzarella, sour cream and red pepper sauce. Menu items were also decent prices. We had to wait a bit to get our food so I can imagine it would be quite slow on a weekend. But the server checked on us a few times so we didn't feel abandoned. The tables are a little cramped and it's retro inside. There are quite a few other restaurants nearby like Asian, Cafe, burgers, pizza but this is a solid option. No. I don't even know why they put asparagus in the name of this dish! It was two over-easy eggs over tater tots. Sprinkle with asparagus instead of scallion and tiny bits of bacon. Not good. Salty. The hot chai latte they served in a tall plastic cup. I had to ask them to bring me a coffee mug bc the plastic was extremely hot to hold. Was good flavor. I have always had a good meal at the Bistro. But holy cow. Were the chef and the servers with experience on vacation today? What. The. Heck. I had what can be called a breakfast with my kid that missed on all fronts. Water for tea was lukewarm at best, pancakes ugh. Thin and rubbery. Inedible. Blueberries were tasteless and super mushy-inedible. Bacon was undercooked and fatty. Didn't receive the real maple syrup but got charged for it (was taken off the bill no problem) we were not checked on once when we were there and I could have really used another napkin as my first held the remains of the blueberries I had tried. We were in the area to do the walk over the Hudson and almost went to a different place for breakfast, but glad we didn't. The inside of Main Street bistro is cute and nicer than some close by alternatives. The wait on a Saturday wasn't too bad and they were accurate on the wait time. It was also convenient they send you a text so we were able to browse the book store across the street while we waited. We got the Franklin lake cranberry cakes, the biscuits and gravy, and the chocolate chip pancakes, and the tater tot special to share. Overall, we enjoyed everything. The tater tot special was a good addition because the portions weren't too big, we basically finished everything between 3 of us. The franklin lake cranberry cakes we're really good and different (and were recommended by our waiter). The biscuits and gravy were OK, not amazing but still good. Given the infuriating changes in the New Paltz real estate market, it's awesome to see a place that isn't selling local color at a profit but is willing to take a stand. I speak of the $2.95 breakfast special, which surely isn't needed to draw traffic to this popular spot. The disadvantage of discovering the excellent Trailblazer breakfast was my failure to diversify. It adds exclamation points to the eggs Benedict genre with a crab cake, andouille sausage and zingy sauce. As Guy Fieri might say there's a lot going on here. What a great place! We had to wait to get a table on a Sunday afternoon (we were in town for a little weekend day trip), but we were glad we stuck it out when our food arrived. I got the Hendrix (without sprouts) and a cup of soup as my side, and my husband got the bistro rancheros. The soup was my favorite part: it was truly great, obviously house made, and well-seasoned without being over salted. The veggie burger patty for the Hendrix was very tasty -- I think it was possibly a beyond or impossible meat base with extra vegetables and seasonings mixed in, which landed for me like a happy medium between an unexciting impossible patty and the perilous realm of often bland and mushy house-made veggie burgers. My husband really enjoyed his order as well (though I'd dock points for it containing cake-like cornbread, I know that my anti-sweet cornbread stance is a minority position in this part of the country!). Service was relaxed but very efficient -- the employees were handling the hungry crowds with aplomb -- and I really appreciated how they have some dirt-cheap breakfast specials on the menu. This is clearly a beloved local gem, and I'd happily eat here again the next time I'm in the neighborhood. read more

New Paltz doesn't have the culinary scene of many of the Hudson Valley towns yet- ton of turnover and few mainstays but Main Street Bistro is one of them. Great food at pretty reasonable prices, and embraced the vegetarian/organic friendly trend ways ahead of the curve. Always enjoy the Breakfast Club sandwich but really can't go wrong no matter what you do. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. read more

If I could give this place 10 stars I would. Came on a Thursday afternoon and it was super busy, that's how you know it's good. Was seated quickly and the staff did absolutely amazing despite being understaffed. Started with a special, potato and garlic soup which was so flavorful. I really wanted almost everything on the menu but we settled for The Breakfast Club sandwich (which is the sandwich of your dreams) & The Islander - they were great choices. Hurts to write this review, but.... Bistro used to be our family breakfast go to spot. Great vibe, a little hippyish and artsy, food reasonably priced and good enough for breakfast including their bargain breakfast. Came back a few times since moving from New Paltz and each time things are getting worse. The new owner must have Stevie Wonder give advice about how to decorate/remodel the place. Dark blue walls, sparse decorations just what one thinks of for breakfast mornings on a Sunday. How about bright friendly nature colors , blue skies, flowers, ANYTHING, but that. The art which used to be on display is almost gone, except for some limited pictures. Maybe those pictures are not even on display and permanent. Any history on display erased. They took out the booths and turned the tables sideways. Don't know if that generates more tables (Don't think so), however now people sit further out with chairs and walking through one has to be careful not to bump the arms of customers eating as the chairs are all the way back in what used to be the walkway. Ozempic recommended to make sure one fits through. Original booths were also helpful visiting with kids. Easy to slide them in and manage them:-) Entrance area is enlarged. Curtain gone, but wait for winter. You'll learn! Anyway, the vibe, funky feel and ambiance are now gone. As the new owner serves different food at night, maybe things were changed to accommodate that evening crowd. Don't know how that business is doing, but despite New Paltz people always writing that they want less Pizza places and more healthy food, strangely enough these "healthy" food places usually don't get supported and make it. For breakfast prime time on a Sunday (expected a wait) the place was pretty empty, compared to when lines were out the door. I can only assume customers got fed up about the new situation and are going to other places. Only two waiters (one for the bar seating area, one for tables) on staff. Thus, to get attended to took a while and then the food took forever to arrive compared to when the place was buzzing. Suggestion: Shorten menu, hire more people, turn out food faster. More table turnover/sales will enable you to do that. Portions have become much smaller with each visit and whoever is cooking now does not do a good job. Maybe old personnel left, not being happy with all the changes. The only constant was that the coffee is still and has always been bad, but the nice atmosphere and ambiance, good portions and good service always made up for that. We always saw a line out of the door at this restaurant so we decided to try it out. I'm so glad we did because their breakfast menu is so satisfying and well-priced. I had the chicken and waffles which was so delicious and heavy which was perfect when we needed to refuel after hiking around the area. It's perfect for before or after hikes. Although, the proportions are massive so maybe try the lighter meals if you're going to go for a hike shortly after. The staff are incredibly kind and frequently check in. The place is like a more cozy diner. This will definitely be our go to eatery after hiking around New Paltz. read more

Went here with a group of friends to catch up for the holidays. Usually just go to B Side Cafe because the line at Main St is so long and the wait is ridiculous. Got there and the wait was 20-25 mins so we said whatever we will just wait & grab coffee first down the street. Go there 20-25 minutes, still had to wait another 20 mins. Smelled gross like BO inside, almost left but we were like whatever we'll just wait we already waited this long. Sat down, still had a funky smell inside. Not even enough utensils on the table for all of us, dirty knives. Dusty / dirty inside, you can tell they don't clean anything. Hot sauce / ketchup on the table had a thick layer of crust. I ordered something the waitress said that they were out of the pesto. I'm like ok that's fine, but my friend also had ordered an item with pesto in it and they didn't let her know. I mentioned that, and then she was like "oh yeah that has pesto in it too." Didn't offer her another sauce or anything instead (so it was dry bc no pesto). I almost ordered gluten free toast (my order came with toast) she's like it's $5 a piece of toast do you want one or two pieces. Who is paying / charging $10 for gluten free toast??? I said forget the gluten free toast. So she didn't bring any toast (not even the one that came with it on the side for someone else to have) Brought all of our food out 50 mins after we ordered (I kept track) except for our one friend's plate which was literally vegan sausage, toast and eggs (the easiest thing on the menu). Oh also they charged him an extra $5 for the vegan sausage even though his dish came with sausage. (Again- why didn't they same anything about bringing it out separately?? He's paying for it why charge double then not even give what comes with it) They brought his food out 10 mins after the rest of ours. Someone in our group got pancakes and they could barely cut them with the knife they were so rubbery. I got one of the frittatas it was pretty good but very small and I had nothing leftover after. I've gotten better quality meal at other places in New Paltz. Honestly not worth the wait there's so many other restaurants in New Paltz where the staff is way nicer, and the food is way better. read more

Still the best breakfast in New Paltz but unfortunately the wait times on the weekends are an hour plus much of the time. I highly recommend they invest in an online waitlist feature like Yelp offers because the waits are their #1 customer complaint. We use to love this place before new ownership. They changed everything. From the coffee, to cold and burnt food .we asked for the potato pancakes and the came out burnt like hockey pucks. We sent them back when they returned with new plate , they were just as bad. We have been going here 5-6 years. We are so dissatisfied in how new ownership has changed it all. THE WAIT: 20 minutes on a Monday at noon. Plenty of time to browse the bookstores around the corner! THE SERVICE: Friendly and quick. Dirty! Everything at this restaurant felt grungy. The coffee we ordered came with dirty cups and the wall next to us at our booth had food splattered on the walls. Overall their plates just seemed dirty. There were exposed wires sticking out of the wall all above us. Waiter was very strange. Ordered pancakes and the two thinnest, tiny pancakes came for like $11 since I added blueberries. Overall very subpar food for expensive prices and a dirty atmosphere. I had no idea this little place near Costco was so good! I was turned onto it by friends who frequent the Bistro. What I found at lunch during the week was a bustling restaurant with top notch service and food. We started with homemade potato chips (they call them "drip chips") and onion dip. A blast from the past and scrumptious! I ordered a blackened shrimp,salad, which was perfect, then sampled my friend's bruschetta (yum!) Oh, and this place has a full bar and great drinks!
