My pals were a bit suspect when we drove just past a plain looking building in the heart of the warehouse district of Azalea Dr. It's @1/4 Mile off I-26 /Exit 216/Cosgrove Rd. The parking lot looks tiny, but don't be fooled, there's plenty of room. Once inside, you'll meet a bunch of friendly folks. Will Call was a breeze & the barkeep gets three cheers-- good drinks, a joke or two and a tapas plate of cheeses, fruit and chiros. There isn't a bad seat in the house. Great set on a raised stage + excellent sound system for us old geezers. Audience were a mix of young and old. The performers seem like cool people that are probably the funniest people in the friend group and would be a blast to be around. But I didn't laugh once at this show. First, they chose someone from the audience to come up and answer questions, the answers which were meant to infiltrate the rest of the show. Which is the only reason I would come back here--maybe next time they choose a better or more interesting person? This time they chose an obnoxious drunk guy who used an Arabic slur at the end of his time. To the point one of the cast made a visibly disdainful face. And then he spent the entire hour (right behind me) guffawing at every single thing and repeating jokes over and over to himself aloud. This is a small venue. Bar is cash only. My show was only about 11 bucks, which is more than reasonable, and the only reason I am not outraged or unwilling to try again. They also have even cheaper shows and different themes.

Threshold on Society is one of the more intimate theaters and one that has taken a number of risks over the last 5 plus seasons. This season is no exception with the new production "Of Mice and Men" starting this Thursday, January 14, 2016. In the three productions I have been able to attend and tickets for Friday, the shows have been spectacular mostly due to great content and impressive local acting talent. The theater is small, but with great sound and acoustics, the quality of the sound is outstanding. The staff from production to concessions is always so happy and appreciative. There isn't any type of elitist or snubby feel. Everyone is treated with respect and they are so glad to see you. This is truly one of the special theater companies in Charleston.

Cinemark is one of those, and its a great choice. If convenient, clean and comfortable. They have 8 (maybe more?) theaters, which are all updated with plush comfy chairs that rock (they do not recline). You do have to reserve a seat to see a movie in any of the theaters, which with Covid going, on is kind of a great thing to have already implemented. The sound systems are great, at times a little too loud, but for those action MCU movies, it definitely adds to the excitement of the movie. There are 3D options for some movies and some theaters are smaller than others, I think it depends on the type of movie and different showing times (evening vs matinee). For Matinee movies, you honestly can not get a better price - under $5. Even on the newer movies. After 6pm the evening costs arent that bad either compared to larger theaters. The snacks, candy, popcorn, food and drinks are priced the way most theaters are, but there is a good selection of all to choose from. They are a smaller cinema, so the lobby can get crowded quickly - this isnt a bad thing but more of something to notate in case you try to run in 5 mins before the show, give yourself more time to get snacks and tickets and get to your seats.

You walk from the front door next to the now closed China Bistro off of Sam Rittenberg Boulevard to the stage and seating area. Unfortunately, the seats were not comfortable even for the approximate 75 minutes when we were seated for the Chamber Music Charleston, who very kindly are allowed by Charleston Stage to use the facility. The night we were there (we have advance tickets for more), it was part of the "2024-2025 Chamber Music at the Pearl." Not sure why they call it the Pearl, but one sign outside of a door referred to Pearlstine, a famous name around Charleston for the Budweiser Beer Distributor for many decades. As to the Autumnal Piano Trio, it was a marvelously talented pianist Irina Pevzner who kept my eyes on her as she went up and down the keys with great flourishes. The violinist Frances Hsieh was equally talented and the music allowed her to show her musical skills. The cellist Timothy O'Malley was the final member of the trio. The Beethoven Trio in D Major was an excellent piece for the musicians and for the hall, with the acoustics allowing the music to flow outward to all of the audience, which almost filled the performance space. As I said, we will be returning twice for other chamber music and look forward to the event, although a pad on the folding seats are similar to movie theater seats, but not nearly as comfortable.

My friend saw a special on tickets around Mothers Day and we picked up 4 tickets for around sixty bucks which was a steal. The theater itself is new and clean. They sell concessions in the lobby before the show and at intermission. The selection ranged from soda, beer, wine, and candy, to some charleston favorites like Holy City Popcorn, Benne Wafers, and Cheese Straws. The prices were very reasonable considering you expect to pay more at the theater. Inside the theater is small so don't worry about where you're sitting. I was second row and loved it but you could be further back with no issue. I agree the seats are a little close together but I also know they need to pack in what they can to this small space. The set design was top notch and because you're so close, you feel like you're part of the action. I had seen Sheer Madness at the original theatre in Boston (dare I say) twenty years ago. I remembered the general storyline but I love how they added in the local Charleston humor to refresh the dialogue. The actors all did a phenomenal job and some of them even maintained the original Boston accent from the original. As a native, I was impressed and didn't even realize that it was "put on" for the show until I realized they were from the area. Pro Tip: Red Orchid is next door and is the perfect pre or post show meal and/or drinks!

The music was fantastic and so much fun. There was great art, comedians (which I didn't get a chance to see - next time), food trucks, dancers and of course - The Vogue OFF!!! I can't even begin to explain how much fun the Vogue Off was. What an impressive, fun group of dancers. The only thing I wish they had was mixed drinks instead of just wine or beer. But the event was so amazing, even in the cold, I'd go even if they had nothing to drink. Definitely worth the money. I can't wait for spring.

They were so good! It made me wish I was eating Cuban food while listening to their mellow vibe. The comedy line ups might have been the most popular event of the night. Before every set there was a line outside the door! Maybe it was because it was freezing outside and people needed warmth, or maybe it was because of hilarious comedians like Jeremy McLellan and Dusty Slay who filled the room with constant laughter. I really enjoyed the self-portrait exhibit. Where anyone could come in, look into a mirror and draw themselves. Although I didn't draw myself, It was really interesting to see how others perceived themselves. Simply becoming designs had some amazing original vintage inspired jewelry! My brother in law was able to buy a unique one of a kind necklace for his girlfriend. The fire pits were such a great idea for such a cold night. Everyone was able to enjoy all of the performances outside while still keeping warm. I always appreciate the Yelp Booth with their fun photo booth and check in swag. One thing I really wish is that they had more food venue options rather than the same ones every time. I know it's a small lot and you can't fit many trucks but it would be cool to have a more options. I also would like to see more places to sit outside. I still really enjoyed this event and will probably be back again!
