I have mixed feelings about Purple Monkey. [[HIGHLIGHT]]On the positive side, my daughter loves getting her hair cut by Kristin (the brunette). I was nervous about my toddler's first salon haircut. I had previously trimmed his hair and he only let me cut two swaths before melting down. At 20 months, he looked like a Yeti on his good days. So, we had to resolve the overdue issue. Fariba, the salon owner, was a complete pro: she knew exactly how to keep my toddler occupied while she efficiently and elegantly cut his hair. I went to take my 3 year old son to get his 1st haircut today. Very bittersweet as he had this beautiful blonde and wavey long hair. I only wanted 1 to 1.5 inches cut off the ends. Well she cut off ALL his hair. He lost his long hair and baby curls. The stylist first asked, 'Do you want him to look like a boy?" How rude! My son cried a lot and I think she chopped all his hair off in a retaliatory fashion. She was irritated at his tears. She did nothing to calm him, speak to reassure him at all. My eldest daughter was in there with him while I waited outside. My daughter tried to tell the woman to not take too much and the woman kept saying to my 18 year old that he is moving too much and it's too late. She literally chopped off all his hair. So, not only is his hair gone, she did a terrible and absolutely aweful cutting job. Jagged edges, whisps that were super long, uneven on one side compared to the other. My son was treated like garbage. They were not patient or tender like you'd expect from a kids hair salon. I'm so beyond disappointed. We will obviously be ok but we are sad his beautiful hair is just a mess now. Do not go here and do not trust them. She seemed like all she wanted to do was hussle us along to fit in as many customers as she can. RUSH job and my poor boys hair looks like garbage. We have to go get it fixed somewhere tomorrow. I was called at 10:42 with a voicemail saying I did not show up for my appointment and I was then charged a $22 no show fee which was triggered by the stylist who was not at the store at 10:30. Not only was this wrong to charge me when I was at the store on time, but I had been going to this stylist for 4+ years for me and my son. Came in on a not so busy monday afternoon, I believe it was Megan who cut our son's first hair cut, she was very friendly and know how to deal with baby. The experience was great. My son really liked it since green is his fav color and everything inside the shop was green! Love the idea of ipads for the kids to watch while cutting hair and we got one of those first hair cut card with a photo. Great experience here. Hi, I was in today with my two daughters, Tina who did my youngest daughters hair was amazing, my daughters hair looks great and she was personable. If I was rating Tina, she would get 5 stars The other lady, sorry I didn't catch her name, was not very friendly, also asked me why I didn't call to say my daughter was a teenager because of her thick hair. My oldest is 10 years old and not a teenager. She also wouldn't put in feathers into my daughters hair.....which I thought was strange. My oldest daughters hair also didn't get dried at all and seemed like a laze job, after it dried it was really crooked. I really didn't love the experience she received, my daughter actually said that the stylist wasn't very nice at all. She also started her haircut 15 minutes late..... Christina did an absolute hack job on my 21mo old's beautiful curls and judged us for how we prefer to present in the world. She arrived late, ok whatever nbd, I wouldn't normally care but then she was flustered and impatient w my kid (who was shockingly well behaved once the iPad was going), and most importantly she didn't listen to what I asked for at all, just did exactly what she wanted. The haircut itself is someone else's idea of ~fine (not good, fine), and that is my main problem. I came in w reference pictures and she took one look, claimed his texture was wrong, and then did what she wanted. As she chopped off all his beautiful long curls she changed her tune about his texture, when it was obviously too late to give him what I asked for (not that she even bothered to recheck the reference picture). She kept saying "aww he looks like a little boy now" as if performative gender is the ~reason I came to get his hair cut. He's 1. Androgyny suits him. Now he looks like a golf pro frat boy bc she can't handle a boy having length on his hair. I don't care what neighborhood the salon is in, if someone comes in w a long haired little boy, it's not your business to make it about gender, if you can't respect that you shouldn't be cutting children's hair. Ffs. Y'all, I can't stress this enough, I had reference pictures. Another thing that really irks me is that I saw his beautiful little curl on the counter and I couldn't hold back my pregnant mama tears and this woman had the audacity to lowkey make fun of me about it "well I've never had a mom cry before!" Really? You've never had a mom get emotional about watching her baby turn into grown child (in a hairstyle she didn't ask for). I booked my daughter's milestone first haircut here and I'm so glad I did. My daughter has been slow on the hair uptake so she wasn't ready for a cut until the geriatric age of three and a half. I think when you wait that long it becomes more of a big deal and Purple Monkey treated it with the perfect amount of fanfare. I'm eager to talk about the cut, but I'll not put the cart before the horse. Megan was so tender and gentle with my daughter. She told her exactly what was going to happen ('I'm just going to run some warm water through your hair to make it silky.') She's outfitted her salon to be a child's wonderland. It's modern and clean-the opposite of other salons that feel like washed-up preschools. Worth the $30 right there. But now the cut-I told Megan what I wanted and she said 'Anna Wintour?' understanding perfectly. Megan spent time on the cut as if she had the actual Anna Wintour in her chair. She was precise and intentional. The result was not only cute, but gorgeous. My daughter's hair was a rat's nest of very fine tangles. Now it looks both full and sporty. I'm giving Purple Monkey one star because I've had one good experience (out of 3). The other two were complete disasters, particularly yesterday. Maybe it's a Southern Marin thing to charge ridiculous pieces for, in this case, completely sub-par work but I am beyond disappointed. Charging $35 or so to cut a 3 yr olds hair is one thing ... but taking absolutely no care to do an at least decent job is another. I took my son yesterday in preparation for family photos today so was hoping for a good cut. I was sitting behind the stylist (Christina or Christine) when she destroyed the back of his hair line (see pic). I said it was too short and she didn't even look me in the eye, just said that she will even it out. I asked her to keep the top longer which she did-ish but it is super short compared to the pic I showed her from his last cut there. The front was so uneven (see pic). She was done in less that 10-15 min max. I went right back to get some things adjusted, including the front but the damage had been done. Now it's super short in the front, which is exactly what I didn't want. Again, I had one good experience here but the experience I had yesterday will keep me from coming back but not from telling everyone I know what a terrible experience we've had. read more

We found purple monkey on yelp and gave them a call, they were able to fit us in and we walked on over. Our little girl loved it, the staff was super friendly and everything was kid friendly. She had no hesitations on getting her hair cut. We live about an hour away from Purple monkey, but we will be returning here soon again to get our little girls haircut. read more

We took our 2 year old in for his first haircut and couldn't believe how smooth it went. We were quite nervous about how he would do and if he would be freaked out about sitting in the chair. Well, we shouldn't have worried. Miss Tammy was awesome with him and he took to her right away (which is not true with most people). He stayed pretty still in the chair for the whole cut; it helped that Tammy was quite quick. His hair turned out cute, too. They took a photo of us and gave us a sweet keepsake with the photo and a lock of his hair from his first hair cut. Shout out to Andrea, the receptionist who was also super sweet and helpful. Had a wonderful first time experience at Purple Monkey yesterday. My six year old needed a trim but our Norma salon wasn't open. Called and made a same day appointment with Kristen (I believe) and it was perfect. My daughter got a great haircut in a kid-friendly salon, which says a lot. She's been to an adult salon and got a great cut but didn't enjoy the experience. She's been to another kid salon and had really bad cuts...this combined the two. Let me first say that $30 for a haircut is steeeeep! But...and this is a butt, Purple Monkey is super kid friendly and the staff is amazing! It says a lot that we travel 40 min every time just for our kids' haircuts! It is in a plaza type area so there is a huge parking lot (we have always gotten prime parking). You have to walk a little ways into the shops area before you reach PM. Once you go in you're immediately greeted and asked if you have an appt. We always make an appt since we can only go on weekends and we know it gets crowded. There are kid sized chairs and toys to play with while you wait, and iPads to watch while they get their hair cuts. Our little guy did very well (considering his age and fear of losing an ear, or actually losing his whole head haha) We have actually been with 2 different hair stylists and he did better with Miss Julie! She's awesome so whenever little man needs another haircut, we'll make our appt specifically with her! read more

I went into Purple Monkey to make an appointment, the lady who booked me said I would suggest feriba to do your daughters bob cut as she is good at them and will do great. I said okay. So we get to the salon and the place is a mess. She had to clean up the hair wash station before my daughter even got her hair washed. I told her that I wanted about 1.5 inches off and not to angle the back of her hair. She put two clips in and then asked me if where her finger was ,was the length i wanted. I said yes no higher then that. Then she randomly started using the feathering scissors to hack my daughters hair. She cut it way above the mark which I said to. The back was uneven and not laying how a bob should lay, after 40 min into her attempting to cut her hair. She saw my face in the mirror and then said oh I have to blend it more. I said wouldn't it be better if you dried it first then to do that? Then she said oh yes. When it was dry it was even worse. The back of her hair was angled, choppy and uneven. She began to bring out her feathering scissors again and said oh I just need to blend it. I said thats what you have been doing for the last 15 minutes and it doesn't look any better. I said just stop, I already need to go to another place to fix what you've done. She began to say but I just need to blend it, and I kept asking her "what is your plan?" and she could not describe what she was going to do, beside cutting it shorter. I am so disappointed in the lack of skills she had. To top this off, my daughter had an allergic reaction to the products she used on her hair. My daughters scalp turned bright red and her cheeks started to get itchy and red afterwards. I walked out of there angry and frustrated, very unprofessional establishment. I did not pay for the haircut as she said she wouldn't charge me as I was un happy. Save yourself and DO NOT GO to Purple Monkey. read more

They were 15mins late - didn't print a picture - and when their payment processing didn't work they hounded me for days. No apology given. Went here for my son's first haircut. Per their written policy, if you are 10mins late you have to reschedule. We got there on time and she was still cutting someone else's hair. She said a previous client was 15mins late, so she was behind 15mins all day - with us as well, my son got in the chair 15mins later - guess they do not abide by their policies. Then she could not get the picture to print, I would have to find a way to print on my own. Also, she could not get the payment processing to work, so they called/left me messages every day for three days to pay over the phone - when I had told her I would pay by a certain day due to being home with a newborn and visitors. There was no apology on the calls for being late, not printing a picture, and my having to find more time out of my schedule to pay them. When you have such poor customer service, especially for a first time customer and first time haircut, you should offer some sort of apology and reduced payment - but not them, all they cared about was getting their $30.
