My first time trying out Purple Roots. I must say I truly enjoyed the beauty of this small restaurant. They are going into their third year of business. The quality of service and food will definitely keep them around from my perspective. The history of the Philippines is all over the walls and it's evident they are proud. We went to Purple Roots on a Monday evening for a relatively early dinner and the dining room was full! I'd looked over the menu online so I knew a couple of items that I wanted to try. Our party of three decided on the lumpia sliders, lechon kawali, sizzling sisig, and inasal wings. I got a green Thai tea as well. The lumpia sliders were our surprise favorite bites. I was anticipating a very strange pairing here but it worked really well. The buns served as a nice soft vessel for the crispy bites of lumpia. I also enjoyed the wings. The sisig and lechon didn't seem to have quite the seasoning that I was hoping for. For dessert, we ordered the leche flan banana cake and halo halo. The banana cake was absolutely delicious! It was more cake and less flan, which worked well for me. The halo halo was a bit too artificial tasting for me. Each bite of the ube flavored components were off putting to me. We ate only a few bites and although we brought the rest of it home, we never ate it. This wasn't like halo halos that I've had and enjoyed in the past. The green Thai tea with sago needed some sweetness. It unfortunately also wasn't great. Service was just ok. After some confusion regarding what we'd ordered and multiple wrong items bright to the table, our server admitted that it was her first day. That was understandable. I never knew this place existed until my friends suggested it. There are kiosks to order your food rather than waitstaff. The place is beautifully decorated with pictures and souvenirs from the Philippines. The food was very delicious! I had pork lumpia and a whole fish (took leftovers home). For dessert I originally wanted the Black Forest cake, but I was informed they were out, so I chose some other chocolatey dessert with a side of Ube ice cream that made me want to find a gallon of it! Filipino breakfasts are a simple affair, usually involving rice and a fried egg. In fact, a traditional Filipino breakfast is called "silog." Silog is a portmanteau of its two components: sinangag (garlic fried rice) and itlog (egg). Add a main meat, and that's breakfast. With that foundation, @purpleroots.jax created a brunch menu celebrating silogs of all varieties. This is their second weekend running their brunch menu. Some kinks to work out on the service side, but the most important thing is the food is fantastic! To start I got the Bangus Musubi, a play on the famous Spam Musubi. Instead of spam, the Bangus Musubi is rice, topped with Bangus (milkfish) wrapped in Nori and topped with a citrus soy sauce. Not quite a handheld app as it wasn't made with sticky rice and it was loosely wrapped in the nori, but it was delicious. Next we got the Bangsilog; a whole baby milkfish, pan-fried to a crispy golden brown, topped with a purple cabbage slaw, served with a side of pickled cucumbers, lumpia, and a slice of Embutido for good measure. And of course, the silog. The other silog ordered was the Sisigsilog; char-grilled sisig, served with all the same accoutrements as the other silog. Mix in that beautiful yolky, sunny-side egg with the sisig and add a bite of rice and that's a dang near nirvanic experience. Both of these dishes felt like home; like many a breakfasts at my grandmother's table. I ran in to order a take out dinner after a Yelp Event. I was very hungry and was going to share with Ernie. So, I picked up ramen next door at Soupa and then came here. The service was great. They answered my questions and were very patient with me. I am sorry to say, the meal was not very good. We threw it away. The lumpia and dumplings were good. We did eat those. Chicken Palabok needed help. It's hard for me to write this. I know they're new, so we must be open and try it again at at later date. After a long wait, my friends and I finally made the reservation to try out this new filipino restaurant. We arrived a few minutes early and still waited an extra 20 minutes for our table. We ordered right away since it was already busy, I had the shrimp pancit, the portion is average, not too big, but the shrimp was very salty, pancit didn't have much flavor, just soggy noodles. For dessert, I had their popular halo halo cake, which was hugeee, I shared it with my girlfriends. Great ube flavors but a tad bit too sweet for me. They played really loud hip hop music in the restaurant so it was difficult to have a conversation with the people I dined with. So much talk and hype about this place...we had to go check it out. Reservations were hard to come by the week of so I planned 3 weeks out, and well into another pay period lol. When walking in, you can't help but look at the walls depicting Filipino life, culture, and recognizable people. I really loved this. We thought we would be seated at one of the tables but I guess since it was just the two of us we were seated at the chef's table overlooking the kitchen area. We were able to see desserts and drinks being made and even behind that area we could see where the entrees were being cooked. EJ was our server and took care of us. He explained that the entrees were meant to be shared and that every thing was excellent. I did start off with a Bushido sake thinking it would be a cloudy one, only for it to be clear and really strong. This was the only drink I had and I was good for the rest of the night. He ordered the Lumpia sliders (lumpia, pickled atchara, torched tomato, butter lettuce, banana ketchup), Laing (Taro leaves, coconut milk, Asian spices) with either lechon or shrimp, and Chicharon Bulaklak (slow simmered pork belly that's deep fried). Of the three, the Laing was the best. The spices with the milk made for an amazing creamy sauce that I would put on everything. He agreed with me. I knew before I got to the restaurant that I wanted the Palabok (Filipino stir fry noodles, quail eggs, chicharon, scallions, fried garlic, tinapa) with your choice of shrimp or soft shell crab. I went with the shrimp. I had alt least one shrimp in it that was a fried while with the head still attached. I've never eaten a shrimp whole before and was a little intimidated by it. There were other super tiny, whole baby shrimp in the dish which I did it whole. They're just crunchy. This Palabok was the real deal compared to Jollibee and I loved it. The sauce/oil was much heavier and a lot more flavorful. He ordered the Leches Flan Banana Cake (Banana Cake, caramelized custard, banana chip crumble, I've whipped cream) for dessert and we shared it. This was sooooo good! He did say that he wished the cake was left out of the fridge so that it would be softer. It was a bit firm when sticking a fork in it. I believe everyone should go support this restaurant. The servers are very nice and polite, they even try to speak to you in Tagalog although I wouldn't rate them badly if they don't since they embody the Filipino character of being hospitable. The presentation is definitely well thought of. I love their homemade fishballs and Taho. This restaurant is not authentic Filipino cuisine so don't go here expecting that but if you want Instagram worthy plates and Filipino ambiance, this restaurant is definitely for you. I truly felt like I stepped into the Philippines, Located on south side next to insomnia cookies around the tinsel town area. Decor- modern yet traditional. Everything was detailed from the wallpaper of Philippine culture and history to the memorabilia of jollibee dolls, the Philippine shell game sungka, books and arts of traditional Philippine style as well as the silverware and plates all wood styled. Menu- consisted of well known favorites as well as lumpia, sisig, pancit, chicken inasal and kare kare and okoy and pompano. They also had street styled fare such as fish balls and kwe-kwe. Everything was very good. I will say this it's very good but I come from upbringing of Pampanga which both my parents were from in Philippines and it is the culinary capital of Philippines so I've tasted the best of the best Philippine cuisine has to offer. I had better okoy, pancit palabok and kare kare and this is from my mom. However I will say the desserts halo halo cake and everything on the menu was still delicious and presented so beautifully. They appear to still be working out the kinks here. From how to handle reservations to the food and service. I made online reservations at 745p.. checked in on time but didn't get sat until 830p. Rice delivered with appetizers so it was cold by the time the first entree arrived by 920p. The entrees did not come out at the same time... different time for each person. One persons adobo order never arrived... server confirmed she never put it in the system. By 933p, the dessert (halo halo cake) arrived... yet my entree still had not arrived. I then asked the server to just cancel my dinner order. The halo halo cake toppled over as it was delivered to the table with no offer to replace it. We still opted to eat it and it was pretty tasty despite the presentation. Looking at the other pictures posted of this cake, our looked nothing like it. I did have to ask for a clean piece of leche flan since the first one fell off. Paid the bill and exited establishment by 1002p. Will we be back? Perhaps we will try again in a year or so after they've had more practice with execution. read more

Wow, I have almost no phone signal in here. One star. Jk jk So I was eating the delicious grilled pork belly with the pickled veggies and bowl of rice. I had about a third of the rice left. And without me saying anything, this dude slides me another bowl of rice over the bar. This is so unusual that I was confused and went, "Huh, what?" He goes, "We have free, bottomless rice," and gives me a thumbs up! *oh my gosh* *swoon* I can't believe it. He replenished the rice the way a good diner fills your coffee. This place actually understands me. Ten stars out of five just for that. Also, the pork belly was soooo soft and fatty, but had a bit of tendon at the same time. Some people are definitely gonna complain about it. Those people are uncultured. Next, the pancit. The sour and citrusy flavor is able to balance the dish and makes it surprisingly appetizing. What a wonderful Filipino restaurant. The order process is self serve via kiosk. So be prepared to place your own order. But I suppose that's the way of the future. The restaurant has interesting decorations all throughout to keep your eyes busy while you wait for your food. I started out great taking pictures, but when the food came, I totally blew it. The aroma from the lechon kawali, sotanghon, and sizzling sisig completely threw me off, as I stuffed my face. Next thing you know, food gone! Let me start with the service. I particularly like the fact that once you enter a restaurant, someone eyeballs you and provide you with a table. Kudos to that! Service and friendliness is no doubt a consideration for my five star rating. It was never too much when they constantly ask for what you need and provide them. We got the Kare-Kare with their homemade bagoong. They were liberal in portioning. There were four oxtail bones in it and the bagoong was perfectly done, not too salty. They had a piece of chili (siling labuyo) to crush to give you some heat. We didn't, however, it was very good idea as an option. We had the sisig burrito which was just okay. Sisig needs to be eaten warm since there are tons of fat in it. I would have preferred the sizzling sisig, but it was worth a shot. The lumpia was good, lumpia sliders were a bit of stretch. Carbs on carbs, but the pickled radicchio gave it a good twist. Will I get it again, probably not. I came here for the halo-halo cake. First off, this dessert is very creative, great idea but just a warning, this is good for FOUR people not one, not two. Unless you and your companion will go there just for that, then, yes, it should be good for two. We also had the mango and ube silvana. I was hoping for that meringue crisp along with the buttered cream, this was a bit of a disappointment. Was it old and it lost its crisp? Or was it really not made of meringue. I don't know, it tasted like a clump of hardened icing covered with nuts with no flavor. That may need some improvement. Restrooms were clean, good for one person and gender identified. I like it that way. That's just a personal preference. Now room for improvements: servers who serve the food shouldn't be busing them. Simply because of sanitation reasons. Our super nice and super pretty server did both. I may not have followed her, but I'm hoping she washed her hands thoroughly. Think about it. I do travel for work , usually stay 1 week or 2 on different place. This is the only time i ate 5 days straight at the same resto. Thats how good their food is. I like that the head-on shrimp were deep-fried in the shell. BUT, They were not deveined. This spoiled the whole vibe for me. And the kare kare would've been spectacular if it were properly seasoned. It was absolutely bland. But I did like the texture of the stew and the wealth of eggplant and bok choy it had. Their issues are easy fixes, so I'll try again in the winter. read more
