My friend and I stopped in to check out the sweet wines and whiskey. The wine and service were good as well as the ambiance of the place. I bought a bottle of their Blackberry Whiskey to bring home with me because I thought my husband would like it. When we got back home we wanted to try the whiskey - it looked good and had a nice aroma but it TASTED TERRIBLE. I also let my brother try it and he said the same thing. Stopped at Purple Toad driving from Kentucky to Illinois. What an awesome experience. My wife and I visit as many different wineries as we can and Purple Toad is definitely one of the best. Went in and said we'd like to do a wine tasting. We found out the tastings were free. 6 tastings, definitely did not skimp on the pour was such a great deal. Our server, Kaley H, was awesome. Friendly, knowledgeable, informative, great personality, just added to our marvelous experience. After our wine tasting we each had a glass of wine and relaxed. We ended up purchasing 3 bottles of wine...Caramel Apple and Chocolate Strawberry. The bottles were on average $2 less than other wineries we have visited. Our family enjoyed an afternoon of wine tasting at this quaint vineyard tucked away in the hills of western Kentucky. We were given a generous offering of eight samples each. Our favorite was the Black and Bruised, which also happened to be their most popular choice. Out of the ones I selected, I favored the Allen's Blueberry, Killers Bs, and the Sweet Carolwine. After we picked a selection of bottles to go, we sat under their Sycamore trees to enjoy a couple glasses. We were on vacation staying at Shawnee Forest Preserve in Southern IL and were looking for things to do since it turned out to be a rainy day. I found Purple Toad on Google and we made the hour drive. This place is super cute. We walked in and were automatically greeted. We were invited to try their wine tasting in which they offered a variety of wines, spirits, mulled wine, and even wine slushies. Our bartender Lila (apologies if spelled incorrectly) was an absolute angel on earth! She was so knowledgeable and gave great recommendations. Her hospitality is unmatched. We didn't want to leave. If you like sweet wine, this is the place for you. Currently, they check you in and you wait in a socially distanced space until they are ready for your group. Once it's your turn, you head to a tasting booth. You get 8 wines for free. And if you can, peruse the menu beforehand because holy cow, there are A LOT of wines to choose from. Once we got to our tasting booth, they had little cups to guarantee you got your 8 samples - which I thought was smart. We started working our way through our lists but our tasting person kept disappearing so others would have to fill in quickly to keep our tasting moving. All of us ended up making a purchase but it was a bit weird that she just kept disappearing. My favorites were the mango breeze and the strawberry lemonade. I do feel like I would have enjoyed the visit more if the wine list wasn't so extensive. There was just too much to choose from in my opinion. read more

Upon entering there is signage to wear masks and give their names to a hostess. Guests are asked to wait the room until their turn for tasting. Paper menus and pens are available for guests as they wait. After going to the tasting room guests are directed to a booth. Booths are separated by barrels and well labeled. There is plexiglass separating the staff. Guests get 8 tastings and samples are poured in plastic cups. If guests want to enjoy a bottle there was outdoor seating available. There are a lot of wines to try, especially if you like sweet wine (page and a half). Not going to lie, it was a lot of wine to choose from. There are some unique flavors (Cotton Candy) and fruit flavors. Everyone in my group really liked the Strawberry Leomonde. The dessert wine was also good (one tastes like a Tootsie Roll). Excited to take a nice pit stop after a horrific week. The girl working "Victoria" killed all of the above positive remarks with her nasty, negative, unfriendly, rude attitude and demeanor. Multiple things happened to make us feel unwelcome and unwanted from minute we encountered her. It was not busy. Even guests were sweet. The worker was anxious, uninviting, and ignorant to point after several things happened we left with no tasting and no purchase. Wasted minimal relax time we had. I've been purchasing Purple Toad from the grocery and decided it was time I finally stop by the winery. When we walked it there was a large crowd doing tasting, and nobody acknowledged us. A customer told us that there was another tasting area in the back. We went over there and were able to do a tasting. Tastings are free which was a benefit. If you like really sweet wines, then you'll love the choices. If you prefer dry wines, this probably wouldn't be the best winery for you. Overall, I enjoyed the tastings and was able to purchase some wines I hadn't tried before! I thought the customer service was lacking and could've been much better. read more

But our wine-tasting concierge, Jean, was the absolute best!! She was so sweet and personable! We enjoy the wines here. The Paducah White is a really light flavor that is not too sweet and not too dry. The Sangria is a little sweeter, but not as sweet as many of their wines. We have tried some of their sweet wines in the past and many are deceiving. The little taste you get at winery does not really give you an indication of how sweet a regular glass will be. There are only 2 real downfalls to me. The first is they only stay open until 630p during the week. We are from out of town and would love to have enjoyed the slushies with family from there, but they all work and can't get there in time. The second is while they did offer candy and crackers there is no real food. I would love to see a salad and sandwich lunch and dinner. Many wineries offer a cheese and fruit tray. That would be nice. All in all it is a good place with really good wine. read more

This is by far the best winery I have ever been to. The owner and staff are super friendly & family oriented. They have over 40, that's right I said 40, wines to sample. They left you sample them all for free. While we were there they had 3 wine slushees for adults and 1 for the kiddos. All of them were amazing. They have recently upgraded their space and we were fortunate enough to have a personal tour of the old & new spaces given by the owner, Allen. I like dryer wines while my husband prefers sweeter. Not only did we find wines that each of us like, but we also found ones that we both liked. We discovered filling up a case here is not hard to do. However, limiting yourself to only one case because you have limited room in you're rental car is a problem. So I am writing this review based off of online experience only. A friend of mine recently put me on to Purple Toad Cotton Candy wine and I thought it was absolutely delicious. At local stores to us, we have tried other flavors and have really enjoyed the options this winery has put out. Since the virus and the shut down of a lot of places in our city, we have not ventured out to many places. So it was a little disappointing that we were not able to get out and restock as we quickly became shut ins and our alcohol consumption began to increase. But as fate would have it the same friend tagged me in a recent facebook post regarding online purchases and shipping. They are currently offering free shipment on purchases over $40 and a 5% discount when you buy six bottles or more. Free shipping, discount, and I can continue to stay at home?!?! Well sign me up! Did a wine tasting back in may of last year. Omg what fun. There were four of us. We all did the eight wines. They were all yum yum yummy and we tried to get different wines to taste. There were maybe three people behind the bar. Our server was wonderful about pouring and explaining and joking and talking to us. She said if we buy any wines we tasted we get a discount. Because it was my birthday I got a free wine glass and we all ordered more then one bottle of wine so another free glass was given. Then a man walked in and my son said oh I know that unit on your hat. They started talking army stuff, and our server asked my son if he served and we got ten percent off our total bill. When I return I want to walk the vineyard. It looks like you can get food there but I can't find a menu or info about food on line. Funny side note, we love stuffed grape leaves and was having a hard time finding them. I called purple toad and asked if in the spring I could pick some. They said yes I could! The wine tasted fine when I sampled, but the server gave me a sample of the wrong wine, because when I bought the one I thought I tasted, it wasn't it! I'm furious with my purchase since I had visited while traveling by. I'm upset with the carelessness of the server to give me the wrong sample so that I purchased two bottles of a wine that I did not know I was buying. I would go back for an exchange if possible, but obviously I'm already out of state and the travel back is not worth it. read more

Love this place, definitely worth a visit! We visited yesterday for the third time in the past 2 or 3 years. Their wine is consistently good, which is why we felt safe giving bottles of their "Black Shadow" for Christmas last year. They also have lots of neat wine-themed gifts, plus very nice indoor and outdoor spaces where you can relax and enjoy a glass of wine.
