Although the blueberry coleslaw that it is served with would have ruined the taste. Fortunately, I asked for it on the side, and got the full taste of the sandwich. Got here right before a pre-concert crowd started filling in the place, which was timed nicely. Services was very good. As with everywhere on the beach, parking is a challenge. I have been going to this restaurant for over 15 yrs. Unfortunately, I won't be going back after our visit this past weekend. After waiting 1 hour & 15 minutes for a table, we were then told that a lot of their menu was unavailable. Husband wanted ribs, nope. Daughter wanted fried chicken, nope. Daughter's friend wanted pasta bolognese, nope. I wanted pesto chicken flatbread - was told they're only making cheese flatbread now, so nope. Daughter ended up with chicken parmigiana - that didn't have any cheese on it - basically, a chicken cutlet with sauce on top. We inquired about the cheese & was told that's how they make parmigiana. I had a soggy cheese flatbread, my husband had a house salad that came with no dressing, and daughter's friend had hard calamari. I asked for a side of grilled chicken for the salad (which is an option), but was never delivered. Food was sub-par. We left hungry & had to find somewhere else to eat afterward. Sigh. This used to be a favorite place of ours, not anymore. Very disappointed. Our waitress, however, was super nice & very apologetic. read more

Visited Purple Urchin during Hampton Restaurant Week. Had an excellent and beautifully presented meal. Started with lobster ravioli then Seabass with Miso glaze, and berries with prosecco! John had the Star Island pork chop stuffed with crabmeat. Yeah. It was as good as it sounds. This is a friendly comfortable place with unmatched creativity and excellence. Unexpected excellence...when you go to the beach we usually enjoy all kinds of food, but it seems to be more casual. We had lunch at the Purple Urchin and the food was so good. I had the most expensive dish on the menu - Scallops with lobster risotto, worth every penny. My mouth is watering as I write this...lol The interior is cool, casual, and clean! I cannot believe the reviews for the spinach and artichoke dip. Mine was more like left over soup, very runny, not really dip. It had kind of a funny wang to it and that should have been my clue to stop eating it. I was sick in the bathroom for 3 days after. It does have a great view of the stage and you can hear the music well. Also the drinks were very good. But after being ill, I will not eat here again. read more

One of my favorites in Hampton. The location is great enjoy a cold beverage while watching the free concerts across the street is very pleasant. Another plus is their beer battered fish and chips. Where this place actually bumps up from 3 stars to 4 stars are the cheap draft beers and the amazing 2nd level for people watching. The purple urgent the place has a nice outdoor patio right across from the ocean and the bandstand . We had lunch there one rainy day, the service was very good the food was very good the salad was excellent the chowder was excellent ,I had the fish and chips and for the price of $16 I found it to be very small about half the size that you would receive at other establishments , our total bill for lunch with two beers including tip was $72 a bit pricey , location location location read more

Our waitress could not have been nicer. The service was super quick. The view is great. The food was pretty expensive for rather small portions. My husband had really great fish and chips and my daughter's chicken tenders were delicious and great quality. My son said his pasta 'didn't taste good'. Not sure how you mess up plain pasta? What is really holding me back from 4 stars is the ambiance within the actual restaurant. For the price I would prefer something more than cheap plastic cutlery and cheap plastic furniture. I know it is overlooking the sidewalk and glassware maybe isn't safe, but when paying $20 for fish and chips I want a fork that an cut into the fish and a real glass for my sangria. read more

The Purple Urchin was by far my favorite restaurant on the Hampton Beach strip. Their burgers were incredible, and their outdoor seating offered a magnificent view of the beach and busy street. Though it is noisy and always a little busy (due to being right above one of the numerous arcades) the Purple Urchin is a terrific and nice place to eat as a family. Friendly service and relatively clean atmosphere but the food is outrageously overpriced and the portions are pitiful. $17 for a basket of soggy fries and one piece of fried fish. I ate it all out of the principle of the matter, but was still hungry afterwards. The artichoke dip was bland bland bland and the clam chowder tasted like it came straight from a can. This place is like the Applebee's of the beach. Decent prices but the food isn't anything special. They have a great drink menu though. One thing that bothered me is on the menu it tells you to ask your server for daily specials, and when I asked her for daily specials she looked at me like I had 3 heads and said "we only have what's on the menu." They should maybe take that off their menu's if that's the case? The view is very pretty, and besides for that one moment the waitress was nice. I most likely wouldn't go again because nothing there really stood out to me. I think it'd be a good place for families with kids though. read more

My wife and I were seated quickly on the patio overlooking the ocean. Our spinach and artichoke appetizer was good and came fast as did our main course. The drinks however were served in small cheap plastic cups but refills were free. The silverware was also plastic. Not what I was expecting. Food tasted good and price was ok for the location and type of place it is. There was live entertainment for a short time and the price for two including appetizer and tax came to $45.62. Service was ok throughout but they were not too busy. I would assume service would slow down whenever busier. I would eat here again if in the area. read more

Had lunch at the purple urchin yesterday and it was quite nice. I would give the atmosphere and waitstaff 5 stars. Their calamari comes with a sweet chili sauce and was outstanding! Not hot but just great---cooked perfectly and came with banana peppers. Their fish tacos made with mahi-mahi were good and had a soft taco shell but could have been helped by some nice sauce. I actually thought of adding their coleslaw(outstanding) to the tacos to enhance the flavor a bit. They could really be great if they had added some of the chili sauce to the tacos. The lobster roll was just ok. It did not have a lot of flavor but came with lots of tasty fries! read more

I don't know what happened to this place in the off season, but they need to fix it. Everyone else on the strip is stepping up their game and it just made our last visit here feel so much worse than it would have last year. We came here Sunday for early dinner to have a couple drinks and listen to the music. When we sat down the musician was singing so Buffet so we were happy and relaxed. We ordered a salad with grilled chicken and fried cheese on top and steak and cheese egg rolls. The salad had precooked, dry chicken on it. The what should have been crispy, fried cheese then had dressing poured on it, so it was soggy. It also had some funky taste to it that was like flowers. The S&C rolls looked great, until I picked one up and there was literally a stream of oil pouring out of a hole in the bottom. I don't know if it wasn't sealed right or what, but we had to take them all out of the basket and put down 6 napkins in it to soak up what came out. Then as we ate them we put more napkins on the plate and tipped it over to let the rest of the oil pour out of them. Once they were left to dry up they were ok. Nothing spectacular, tasted like a standard S&C sub but fried. Oh, during the whole time eating, the musician was talking to a table down towards the stage area. We heard half a song when we walked in and when we were waiting for the bill he started back up. Overall, if you want a cheap place for mixed drinks, out of the sun, this is a good place. Hopefully they fix the food issues. The menu is very limited, so what they do have, should be done good at least read more

Let me begin by saying the food was decent, the prices reasonable and the service provided by my waitress was good. So why only 2 stars you ask? Because I have never been cattled out of a place quite like this one! My waitress delivered the check and I was rummaging through my purse to get my credit card and another Purple Urchin employee was already wiping down my table (how rude!). Now I would kind of understand that if there was a line waiting to get in, but there wasn't. We actually had to move out of her way at times for fear of her wiping crumbs and stuff right on us! It interrupted our conversation and really did not make for a leisurely dinner. I handed our waitress our check and my credit card and the other employee was setting the table (placing plates and plasticware on the table while we still sat there). I have never ever experienced a place that does this. I will not go back for this reason, I kind of want to enjoy the whole experience. They did everything but actually say, "leave". By the way, our total time from sitting down to leaving was all of 40 minutes. read more

Beyond awful Service. Went to the Purple Urchin with a party of 10 or so adults midday, during the week. There were 2-3 other patrons in the bar area, and a handful of people in the restaurant area. Bartender was ok, although he was less than forthcoming about giving out the wifi password. No big deal. However, one waitress was extremely rude, pointing out that we were being too loud. It's a beach side, open aired bar/ restaurant directly on Hampton beach! One member of our party yelled down to someone they knew walking by. No profanity, and not a prolonged thing. Two nights ago, I took clients from out of town to Hampton Beach to check it out. We had dinner at the Purple Urchin, it was a great spot because it was directly across the street from the free live music and was on the second floor, giving us a great view of the concert! It was also a Wednesday night, fireworks night, and we were able to watch from our table while eating dessert. Dessert, by the way, was amazing... Homemade key lime pie! I was very impressed with the food. We started off with the seared tuna and brushetta, both were fantastic! For our entrees, two of us had the seared scallops with lobster risotto, one person had the Mediterranean chicken, and one went with the chicken pizza. We fondly remembered the Purple Urchin from a previous visit to Hampton Beach 6 years ago. It was our first stop for dinner on this visit to Hampton Beach. However. Service was extremely slow, our waitress was inattentive and the food was horrible. My teenage girls opted to share a haddock dinner, since neither was particularly hungry. The dinner was $17, and the haddock fillet was the size of a Van De Kamp frozen fillet. And not particularly tasty either. My meatloaf sandwich was inedible. Lobster roll not great.
