One of the many reasons I love Maine is places like Puzzle Mountain. Honor system stands on the side of the road offering homemade goods. LOVE IT. We drove past on a Friday afternoon in mid-October and the stand was loaded with a variety of really well wrapped pies and whoopie pies. All of the ingredients clearly labeled, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, everything contained dairy and eggs. Bummer! I for sure would have bought some baked goods if there had been any vegan options available whatsoever (hint hint, nudge nudge; they [The Omnivores] won't even notice if you made something without dairy and eggs, but we [The Vegans]? We check every label. We'd know. We'd buy. We'd appreciate.). We did get a jar of blueberry jam for $10 and it's delicious! We found this hidden gem on the side of the road on our way to a local swimming hole. We stopped on the way back to our cabin and picked up a few maple cookies, a whoopie pie and a crumble top wild blueberry pie. What a find! In the wee hours of the morning I passed by this stand on my way to a hike up Old Speck in Grafton Notch. It was too early for any treats but that was okay because I'm generally not a huge fan of fruit pies (though my husband is). After 6 hours of hiking, I passed by this roadside bakery again and felt compelled to pull in to bring a surprise treat home to Rhode Island with me. Wow. Whoopie pies, cookies, jams, and pies. I was immediately drawn in and knew I'd be rooting around in my purse for any cash I had on me. On my visit, there were traditional chocolate whoopie pies, whoopie pies with maple cream, cookie sandwiches with maple cream, a variety of jams, as well as Maine Blueberry and Blackberry/Raspberry pies. I knew I had to take a pie home because they looked SO good. My bland experience with pies in the past was quickly forgotten. I mean, c'mon... they were still warm from the oven!! How can you say no to warm pie with a flaky crusts oozing with deep dark berries. Payment is based on the honor system and with the cash I had on me, I left with a Blackberry/Raspberry Pie, two Maple Cream Cookies, and a bottle of water. A lifelong fan of those Little Debbie oatmeal creme pies... the maple cream cookies were like that but so so so much better. Glad I bought two because one disappeared into my belly immediately. A slice of pie followed 5 hours later when I arrived home. I may be a pie-convert now. My husband claimed his slice to be the absolute best he has EVER had... ever (which is saying something). You know what's funny, my SO and I drove in the Grafton Notch area for some hiking and we passed by this stand on the side of the road that sold baked goods. And YOU DIDNT WANT TO STOP FOR IT!!!!" --Continues to make him feel bad about something he doesn't remember....-- And lo and behold we were able to make it on a trip up to see the falls a few weeks ago this summer. Our first stop didn't show any pies, just jam and...maple cream cookies. Never heard of them and we only had a $20. It's an honor system and not like you can get change for a 1.50$ cookie. We were able to scrounge up change from under the seat and from all over the crevices of the cars... Hooolllyyy it was soooooo good!!!! We went for a couple hours of trouncing around the park area and on the way back saw PIES PIES PIES!!! Each was $12 and lots of different flavors. We went for the apple and got two more maple cream pies. Surprisingly, I wasn't a fan of the apple pie. The SO loved it. The CUTEST bakery! I can't stop telling my friends about this place every time I discuss my Maine trip... We stayed in a lovely B&B in Bethel and decided to explore some local hiking trails. We saw that Grafton Notch State Park was a good option and passed this bakery on our way over. We had no idea what it was but saw cars stopping and people walking around, so we decided to check it out on our way back! We met the owner when we were browsing and he told us how his family's been running the bakery for 20+ years. It's wonderful that they use the honor code system for paying--it really emphasizes the small town vibe. We picked up a raspberry pie, maple cream cookies, and chocolate whoopie pies. I'm a big-time dessert aficionado and enjoyed all of the pastries. More than anything, though, I can't get over the super cute bakery just sitting in the middle of the road! The most adorable pie stand!! Run by the honor system, they accept cash and venmo. We came across this driving by so obviously we had to stop! Bought a raspberry strawberry pie and took it back to our camp site and heated it up over the fire...delicous!! The maple cookie sandwiches are soooo goooodd too!! Our AirBnB host recommended this bakery to stop at after a hike in Grafton Notch. We kept our eyes peeled on our way to our morning hike, found the stall and took a mental note to come back. We did after 2 hours of hiking up and down Table Rock. We were spoilt for choice and settled with the blueberry strawberry pie. The filling was runny, however a non-issue for us because it was tasty nonetheless. The crust is perfect, I couldn't even do pie crusts this well myself! We spent 10 days in Maine last week in a wonderful off grid cabin with a friend that travels to the area frequently. He was very excited about this bakery and kept telling us how wonderful it was on the drive up from Philly. The first day, we stopped at Puzzle Mountain Bakery for maple cookies and pie and were blown away! We stopped here almost every day of our trip! I was driving and after our choices were made and headed back to the van, I placed our money in the metal barrel. Upon returning to the van, I started towards the highway. This stand is one of mine and my husbands greatest discovered treasures. Every year we travel up to Lake Umbagog, we stop at this stand and grab pies and maple cream cookies to enjoy by our camp fire. The lake has always had this magical feeling in our hearts, and it's topped off by this incredible little stand of delicious confections. We always make sure to stop again on our way home so that we can savor every bit of our trip even after we've gotten home. While vacationing in Bethel Maine we were driving on our way back from a hike and passed by this small bakery on the side of the road in the middle of the mountains. We love to support local small business when we vacation so we turned around and figured we'd buy a couple things. We bought a couple maple cookies and a whoopie pie. I am being 100% serious when I say that the maple cookie was THE BEST cookie I have ever had. We liked the cookies and whoopie pie so much on our last day in Maine we decided to drive 25 minutes just to buy more cookies! We also bought a Maine blueberry crumb pie and to my surprise, THE BEST blueberry pie I've ever had. If there is one place you need to stop, this is the place!
