Pypes is a true head shop in most of the former glory and exactly where to go if you're looking for bong grommets and o rings and cleaning brushes. I love this place! I used to live in the neighborhood before it got gentrified and New Seasons built several locations. I have picked up all kinds of sweet deals, a beautiful bong that broke in my last move, some smaller glass pipes, incense, pipe cleaners, etc. The owner is very kind and she used to have a lovely yellow lab but it is long gone at this point. I no longer live in Portland, but next time I come to town I will be stopping in! In no way is this place "sketchy" or "seedy" those comments must be made by the gated community crowd. read more

There are two kinds of headshops in my book: Seedy and chill. Third Eye on SE Hawthorne is an example of chill. Pype's Palace is right on the boarder of seedy. The thing is, it's not the shop nor it's ambience--it's the staff. They could be a little less suspicious and intimidating. That said, it's great to have a full headshop in the neighborhood. Good selection of glass and pipes and accessories, nice selection of afficionado magazines, cleaning supplies, and tobacco. It's no Third-Eye, but they've got the market in NoPo, as Jarrod rightly points out, cornered, so they're good if you need grommets or cleaning solution in a pinch. They seem pricy for some stuff, right in line with their competitors for others. I generally hit Pype's up in a pinch; otherwise, Third-Eye gets my business. read more

Great selections of incense, pipes, hookah supplies, papers, stickers, grinders, and so much more. The staff is really friendly and thoughtful. I just moved to Portland. I'm not sure what most smoke shops are like here, but I know when someone is being weird. I agree with the guy below me who says it bordered on seedy. I went in there because I found their website looking for a head shop in my new neighborhood. Their selection is kind meh... and the lady in there (who I think was the owner) was giving me a really weird vibe. And the guy in there at the counter was even weirder. I may dress a little straight-edge for work, but I'm hardly an unlikely customer. Maybe if I go in there wearing my Tie Dye next time they'll act a little less weird. All in all: Pricey, unfriendly, and weird (and not in the good way). I come in peace! read more

These folks are really nice. They've been around a while and I like giving them the small amount of business I have for paraphernalia. I broke a stem and ended up buying the wrong size replacement. So I cleaned it up and brought it in with me to make sure I didnt do it again. They were perfectly cool about it and don't mind at all that sometimes you're only buying a .50 cent item. Prices seem reasonable - probably less than those of the boutique stores. read more

Ohhhhh sweeeeet fragrence of Incense! Love it!!! I like to shop at Mom & Pop kind of places. I always have to stop in and see what they have in their inventory, Yes, their prices are a bit more for their pieces, but they have an awesome selection and if you're not uptight, they are pretty chill and treat you well. Sometimes "shtuff" happens or maybe someone had a bad day, Whatever it is, go in there with a smile on your face and see if that makes a difference. If you've got a question, they're the ones to ask. Just have a chat and meet them. Honestly can't say I spent a fortune in there, but do buy something! I know I just keep coming back. Maybe it's just that hypnotic luring smell.......... ;) read more

The staff at this place will just stare at you while your browsing their enoumous selection expecting you to pick something out in five minuets. The pipes are wayyy overpriced. If you do shop here examine what your buying because i saw alot of defects like scratch's, air bubbles, crooked bongs and pipes. The rolling papers i got instead tasted very stale. Thend. read more
