If you're ever in the downtown area and have an appreciation for cigars then this is the place to go to. Walking through those double glass doors, you can see the crazy inventory and supply of cigars they carry and wouldn't doubt if there's more in the back. It's a pretty wide and open space and there's some seating to smoke a cigar inside if you so desire. I went in needing to find some maduros for my dad as a gift and we were able to find a few at different price points so I could makeshift my own tasting box. The staff here is pretty straightforward and to the point which is nice. I had gotten some advice on cigars priced around $10 a piece, $25 a piece, and $45 a piece. Grabbed a few at each price point and knew that this gift would be a super solid one for my dad. After I inquired about the duration for transporting them on a flight, they came to the rescue with a mobile humidor packet to keep them in tip top shape. My time here had me feeling like I was back at my great grandpa's with all the tchotchkes one could possess. Towards the entrance was a large pile of cigar boxes that their inventory came in and they sell them as storage or gift boxes. Every box came from different makers and consisted of wood, tin, and everything in-between. With the help of a friend, she was able to help me find a Rocky Patel Box that was perfect. This could have been a 5 star review, but sadly it is a 1 star review. I bought a Colibri cigar lighter for $125 from Rich's downtown location. It stopped working. I brought it back. An employee named Bill proceeded to dismantle the lighter to the point that he was unable to reassemble it. So now it was completely destroyed. Rather than simply give me $125 of in-store credit to buy a new lighter he kept the now destroyed one and said he would call me back with a solution. He never called me back. One month later when I finally got ahold of Bill he told me he was going to give me a different lighter. When I looked up the lighter he wanted to give me I saw that it was a $90 dollar lighter. When I asked him about the price difference he got very upset and said "Oh, come on, I'm trying to help you out here". I responded that I simply would like to either get the difference in store credit or buy something more expensive and pay the difference. At this point he was done and not helpful. He said my best bet would be to come into the store and hope he was there. I drove to the location immediately. I found Bill and asked him to show me a few lighters. I picked one that was $109 dollars. He handed me the lighter and a half full bottle of butane worth $12 dollars and said "have a nice day". So long story short, Bill destroys my $125 dollar lighter and replaces it with $121 dollars. As much as I would love to support a local brick and mortar store. I can no longer justify shopping here. I have an infinitely better experience buying my cigars and cigar accessories on line. I get a better selection, a better price, and better customer service. read more

I fell in love with Rich's in 1985 shortly after moving to Portland and falling in love with downtown. I would go there to buy my clove cigarettes and my English imported mints from Chowards that had a delightful violet scent and unusual flavor that I just loved. When I moved back from France in 1997, I would go to Rich's for my weekly copy of Le Monde. Of coarse it was old news by the time that I got it but I didn't care. I was just excited to have a French newspaper to read. I also picked up the French Vogue, which was also very exciting for me to see what would never be in fashion in Portland. Much later and even recently, I've stopped in to buy empty but interesting cigar boxes. They make a nice alternative to a gift bag if the size is right. Just tie a satin ribbon around the box and voilà! You have a beautifully presented gift. I still pick up a package of those mints. Rich's has a cool vibe and the magazine/newspaper selection is extreme! . . . they have expanded their extensive inventory of over 2500 periodicals, 1500 facings of cigars, hundreds of pipes, and over 200 blends of Tobacco on display. . . It seems like a great cigar shop but this used to be a great newsstand and it no longer carries magazines.

Not a bad store, but staff are a little impatient and don't seem that interested in trying to sell you anything. I had asked for guidance on buying a pipe and was told "they're all right there. [pointing to the cases containing pipes]" It's similar with cigars - You'd better know exactly what you want because a lot of what they have is not visible. And you'd better know your terminology because they don't seem to have much patience for newbies. For the pipe and cigars, I took my business online where the prices are cheaper with free shipping. I don't know if the owner(s) know this, but they are losing money for no reason. (note: This review is based on several visits to the store over the course of a year.) read more

So sad they no longer carry magazines! This is one of my first stops while visiting Portland for reading material in the way of magazines & newspapers from around the world. I especially love a good NY Times Sunday paper to read at Public Domain coffee shop down the street. Certainly not their fault as magazines & newspapers are disappearing daily, so sad. So we are disappointed. We don't smoke cigars, nor do we know anyone that does. But please, if you do, buy them from this wonderful gem of a store! read more

They have been a downtown staple since I was a kid in the 1990s. Always the best cigars and the right ambiance to make an adult feel like an adult. The smoking chairs are comfortable - even for a 250+ guy like me. Very old school in all the best ways. read more

I popped in yesterday because a friend mentioned the selection. I'm new to cigars. When I walked in the front door I was met with the beautiful aroma of pipe and cigar tobacco. I felt like I was in the right place. It didn't take long to get help. I believe it was the owner who helped me. I was there to try a selection of cigars being that I'm new to cigars. I really appreciate the help being that I wasn't purchasing a large amount. I'm not judging anyone on their being nice or not. I'm here to buy cigars. Simple as that. I have been a cigar aficionado for a number of years. I started smoking a cigar when I was 21. Granted it was Phillies Titans and they were crap. I learned about better ones eventually and everything that goes with them and their history. I also learned about pipes and all of the ritual that goes with them as well. I don't smoke that often, if I have one every couple of months, that's a lot for me. So, one could say I know a thing or two about what a good smoke is. I do like going into a cigar store with the giant walk-in humidor, jars of pipe tobacco, briar pipes, leaded glass ash trays and sometimes even the cigar lounges in places that let you smoke. When I am in this atmosphere, I know just what to recommend to a new smoker or even a seasoned vet. It's an old and by todays standards, an outdated, but mostly enjoyable, experience. Rich's doesn't really have much of that, and they have a large magazine section and they sell candy???? I will admit, I have never seen that in a cigar shop before. There was a humidor, but the it was tiny, and the only thing in there were "seconds" cigars and Phillies cigars??? In a humidor? All the good cigars were behind glass, so unless you had someone helping you, you weren't getting at them. The pipe tobacco too, and the glass jars to take a whiff of them was also out of reach of ones hands, unless you had help. I will admit I did find a really nice smelling pipe tobacco that I will eventually purchase. The pipe tobacco was around $9-10 for two ounces. As for the cigar selection, it was pretty small with very few familiar brands, I wasn't impressed. I will go back for pipe tobacco but most likely, not cigars. Broadway Cigars and Cascade had far more selections and big humidors (or the whole room at Cascade) to wander around in with very helpful staff. That is all. read more

You want to get treated inferior by a pretentious boomer prick, find Bill there blender, he'll do his best to make you feel stupid for asking any questions. Hey Bill at one point or another you didn't know much about loose leaf either, I only hope no one was as condescending to you as you were to me. A little patience and willingness to inform and teach would have gone a long way, your blends are great, your personality grating as 2 grit sandpaper. I'll stick with my original tobacco supplier decent blends and superior service (kindness goes a long way). This is a tough one to review. Why? Because what you get depends on who's working. Some of the employees are friendly and helpful, but others are snobby, condescending, and- maybe worse- not knowleadgable. I've had employees there be helpful and pleasant, and I've had them be indifferent and rude. Consequently, I look in to see who's working before I decide whether to go in or not. More often than not, I don't. So, dear Rich's- I can get anything you have online, cheaper, without dealing with snobby employees who give me inaccurate information. I'd rather support a local business, but not so much so that I'm willing to be talked down to by employees who I can't trust to actually know what they're talking about. read more

As stated below-if i accidentally walked in to a biker bar I'd have been met with a friendlier greeting. I could have been persuaded to remove my review but you chose to be, ah well you know, Dick. Appalled-in one word. I'm European and we are in Portland (we do live in USA). I saw they had "Magazines from around the World" and was excited to see what they had from NW Europe. I walked in with my two children, 6 and 3, who are impeccably behaved and was barked at as soon as I walked in that my children were not welcome.
