I've been taking guitar lessons with Q for about 4 months now. I started out at an intermediate level and could play pretty decently, but I wanted to bridge the gap between the chords I knew how to play and the music theory knowledge I was missing that was holding me back from truly understanding the guitar. Q has helped me with that, and has customized our lessons to go at a pace that works for me. He patiently breaks down different aspects of music theory in a digestible way that makes it easy for me to learn and grasp concepts that were previously very daunting. We usually focus on specific concepts and then apply them to a song, making our lessons hands-on. He is an excellent instructor with an impressive background in multiple styles of guitar (jazz, bossa nova, classical, etc.). He's got an amazing ear, is incredibly knowledgable about music theory, and is passionate about the guitar. I am finishing my degree in music technology at NYU this fall. I have been involved in music my whole life playing, recording, mixing, producing. A few years ago I reached a point where I felt stagnant with my musicianship. I couldn't sit down with my guitar, unplugged and joyfully play for any extended period of time. I was stuck with the same harmony, fingerings, ideas, sounds. I knew jazz was the next step for me. Q Morrow did a fabulous job playing for our wedding. He played acoustic guitar for the ceremony (primarily Beatles, since we're not entirely traditional) as well as Brazilian/Beatles music for the reception. For the reception, he was joined by Mark Fishman on drums/percussion (together, Q and Mark make up Jobooom, and we heard them play at Bossa Nova in SF). I've been playing guitar for more than 20 years and only recently decided that I didn't want to fake it with Jazz anymore (after 20 years, I learned to fake it pretty well). So I asked my buddy who I might find to teach a seasoned player such as myself. Not an easy person to find. He said without a flinch that I needed to get in touch with Q. And he couldn't have been more right. Q is arguably the best jazz player in town, hand down. On top of that, he knows how to express his ideas and concepts in as fine grained detail as necessary, which he does, with clarity and depth, and with everything we discuss. I haven't reached beyond jazz with him yet, but I know that his fluency with other styles is equally on the same expert par. After 20 years of playing, he leaves me with enough to practice for another 20 years. And of course, you couldn't find nicer and more patient guy to study with. i've been studying with Q since April 2010. Q's a rad guy and a pretty tough teacher. He's played guitar in various performance and academic environments all over the world and is currently paying the bills in San Francisco as a working musician (no small feat!) Meeting with Q you'll have access to this worldly knowledge and experience, and you'll find he is very open and excited to share what he's learned. sometimes during lessons, when i'm faced with the beauty and fluidity of Q's playing i feel discouraged that there is so much to learn, but Q reminds me that excellence is the product of years of dedicated effort, and studying with him makes me want to practice. I had been playing guitar for several years when I decided I wanted to learn how to play some Brazilian-style guitar--samba and bossa nova. I chanced across Q on here and gave him a call--and I'm glad I did. Q is an excellent teacher. He not only is extremely knowledgeable about the genres I was interested in exploring, he did a great job of assessing where I was at as a student and tailored the lessons to me without a problem. Always game for whatever songs or music I want to learn, Q is a very chill guy and our lessons are very relaxed and fun. He not only understands the music and has a great ear and ability to notate everything clearly, he also understands the theory behind everything and presents that in a clear way, all for, what I understand, is a very reasonable price. He also has lots of great advice on what to listen to, and is very patient with all the bad habits that I picked up in the ten years I was playing guitar before finding a teacher. I have had a couple of teacher before I started taking a lesson by Q. Those 2 teachers were great but I would say Q was the best! I improved a lot in short amount of time before he moved to NY. The way he approached me was using arpeggios instead of scales to improvise and I finally felt sounding jazzy. I wasn't good at to do homework before but I had to, to catch up with him. He taught me by listening the song at first then breaking the puzzle to explain using music theory how each player played. Q is hands down the best music instructor that I have ever had! His knowledge of music is immense, his ears are razor sharp, and his ability to articulate concepts is unmatched! When I started lessons with Q I knew how to play the guitar but I did not understand any underlying theory that goes behind making music. He patiently broke everything down for me into bite sized concepts. I have an aversion towards reading notes and he worked with me. He gave me great tips on ear training. Within 8 lessons I was a far more competent musician than when I started taking lessons with him and I still learn from the things that he taught me. I was super sad when he moved out of San Francisco. But if anyone is looking for a great guitar instructor in NY I would recommend him in a heart beat! Q inspires me. I have been taking lessons from him in Brazilian Jazz since late 2009. He is a wonderful and patient teacher as well as an amazing performer - watching him play exactly how you want to play is very motivating. For my 61st birthday I received as a gift 10 lessons with Q Morrow. I had picked up a guitar in college and self-taught myself how to play some basic chords so I had many years of bad form and sloppy playing to unlearn. Q is so much more than a guitar teacher. He is a true musician and musical scholar and I was in awe of his mastery not only of the instrument, but also the depth and breadth of his knowledge of musical styles and music theory. And though I sometimes walked into my lesson feeling down that I hadn't made good enough progress, by the end of the lesson Q had me feeling as excited and enthusiastic as when I walked in for my first lesson. If I had trouble playing a particular phrase or chord progression, Q would patiently work with me until I got it right. And if I wanted to learn a particular song, Q would send me home with an arrangement to match my skill level, and he could do this even if he never heard the song before! One of the most valuable lessons, if not the most valuable lesson I learned was simply HOW to practice, and what a difference that has made. My lessons ended after 1 1/2 years when Q moved to New York from SF this summer, but I'm still honing the skills Q taught me. And even though I sometimes fall back into my old bad habits, Q has given me such a sold foundation from which to work that I know their days are numbered. Thanks Q! read more
