Service was great. Food was great, but wish the mac & cheese was a little cheesier but overall great visit.

I couldn't decide between the fried shrimp,…read morefried chicken, fried pork chops, liver, or turkey wings, so I asked the waiter which item was most popular. She recommended the turkey wings, so I went with that. I like my turkey wings well done and nicely browned, and I specifically requested the brownest ones in the batch. She told me they had just come out and were well done. When I got home, only the top wing was browned--the one underneath wasn't--which was frustrating since I made a very specific request. She also seemed to have a slight attitude about the request, which didn't help. The turkey wings themselves were just okay. The cabbage could've used more seasoning, but the white rice and gravy were good. Unfortunately, the cornbread that was supposed to come with the meal was missing. I would try this place again, but I'd likely order one of the other items I was interested in--not the turkey wings.

I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction with my recent experience at Southern Comfort…read moreRestaurant and Lounge in Norfolk, Virginia. I placed a takeout order and experienced an unacceptable wait time of over one hour with very little communication regarding the status of my food. Throughout the wait, I received no meaningful updates from the server, despite being one of the last customers remaining in the restaurant. The server appeared to be the only employee handling customers and moved very slowly, which further contributed to the delay. While waiting, I observed several concerning issues that reflected poorly on the restaurant's professionalism and food service standards. Kitchen staff were openly arguing and using inappropriate language, including profanity, within earshot of customers. This behavior created an uncomfortable environment and was highly unprofessional. Additionally, I observed staff members walking around while wearing gloves and touching various surfaces and items before handling food. This raised concerns regarding proper food safety and sanitation practices. After waiting more than an hour, I finally received my order only to discover that the food was cold and one of the items I paid for was missing entirely. Despite the lengthy delay, poor service, and missing item, no apology was offered by any member of the staff. I ultimately left the restaurant with an $87 bill and a completely unsatisfactory experience. As a paying customer, I expected better communication, professionalism, food quality, and customer service. Unfortunately, none of these expectations were met. I am requesting that management review this incident and provide an appropriate response regarding the concerns outlined above. I would also appreciate consideration of a refund, credit, or other resolution given the significant issues with my order and overall experience. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to hearing from you regarding how this complaint will be addressed.

Most of their business is take away, but you can and really should eat in at least once. Nothing about this place is stuffy. This is soul food at it's absolute best. The depth of flavour is extraordinary. If you are looking for horrible greasy stuff that masquerades as soul food, you will be sorely disappointed. There is love in every serving. I've been lucky enough to try the whole snapper. It was only $40 for a fish that was easily big enough to feed 3 people, and I am not small! This fish had zero chance of fitting in the to go container. Its head and tail were flopping all over the place. Much more importantly it was incredible. The stew was fantastically deep. The root vegetables were soft but not over cooked. It is served head on, bones in, like it should be. The fried version is not greasy and the batter stays in place. Have I mentioned the collards? The pot liquor. OM NOM NOM. These folks will have you asking for seconds on vegetables. The first time I had their mac and cheese, it was good. Tonight's was off the chain. If you want a bigger portion of this, you are clearly a monster. They seem to have gone cake rather than cobbler, and it does not disappoint. We were in on Juneteenth, too. It was obvious then that we would come back, and it was hands down the right decision. If they are out of something, it is not unusual. That is because it is THAT FREAKING GOOD. This is food you could happily stand in line for in the heat for several hours. It takes as long as it takes, but on neither visit did it take too long at all. The car park is ample, which is a relief. They have both steps and a ramp. There is a tiny bit of a rough transition to get inside, but it shouldn't be a nightmare for folks with a mobility impairment. There is more than sufficient distance between tables so that everyone can be seated comfortably. It is immaculate in terms of cleanliness. Nicer than that is none of the staff attempt to clean while customers are enjoying their meals. Most single people will find the side orders more than sufficient. Overall, this is easily five stars. I felt guilty reviewing Rainey's since I don't want a stampede of out of towners heading for their door. But in truth, it's a destination restaurant. Support these folks they deserve it!

However, it isn't the brown stew chicken you'd expect. It almost has a Smokey BBQ undertone to it that I feel doesn't give you stewed chicken. Other than that, I enjoyed it.

In 2023, they closed their original location of Shore Drive and set sights on a new local which was expanded. They have finally reopened and we got a chance to stop in to see how they were doing. Let's check it out shall we? We were seated a minute after walking in. There were a few people dining inside on this cloudy day. The decor is nice resembling a type of restaurant you may see in New Orleans. Right when I was looking through the menu, I ran into Chef Moe who greeted me with a handshake. It has been years since we last saw each other but the vibes came right back since Sophia and I were long-standing customers. We couldn't talk long since he was busy, but it was great to run into him again smiling from ear to ear seeing me there. Great people indeed. How was the food you might ask? Pretty damn good. We both ordered their fried catfish meals with sides (mine came with fries and sweet cornbread and Sophia's with mashed potatoes and gravy and mac-and-cheese). The fish was seasoned perfectly and was huge. It was big enough to cover a football field (just kidding). The fries, as always, tasted great and the cornbread was delish. The both of us ended up taking home leftovers where the food didn't lose any taste from before. It was so refreshing to stop by after so many years. And it was wonderful seeing Chef Moe continue to bring good vibes to the Norfolk community through his cooking. You know we'll be back soon. Till next time :)

The atmosphere definitely makes a good first impression. As far as the food and customer service, everything was just okay for me. I ordered the shrimp, fish, crab cakes, and chicken wings. The crab cakes were mostly bread, which was a little disappointing. The wings were okay overall, but one of the wings was extremely feathery, so that definitely threw me off. One thing I would recommend is giving customers a little more sauce/condiments. I asked for vinegar to go with my shrimp, fish, and crab cakes, and I received what was basically a teaspoon of vinegar. I definitely needed more than that! I will say, I think I enjoyed Mama's Kitchen more at their previous location. I used to get a variety of their food (with the exception of the macaroni), and I remember enjoying it more. Maybe I just caught them on an off day, so I'd be willing to give them another try and see if my experience is different next time. Overall, the new location is beautiful, but the food was just okay for me this time around.
